Beautiful Hotel

This is a awesome hotel. The service was the best I have ever had. This was the best vacation me and the wife have ever had. The only problem we had was my sandals were stolen on the beach the first day, but everything else was so good it didn't matter.

Our agent Michelle Duquaine was top notch in our booking. Rooms are average and clean. Hotel is very clean. Food is good and a variety. Beach very nice (not large), perfect for relaxation. The only down side is the sun is gone by 5:30-6pm last week in february and first week in march. To the right of the beach is a ferry to the island. Great boat ride. Feel safe walking our of the hotel in the hotel district. Would go back in a heart beat. Apple people were readily available if we wanted to book a excursion. We are strictly there for RR!

I stayed at Riu Cancun Feb '18, I was very happy with the Hotel Staff, they really go beyond expectations to make you feel comfortable and enjoy your vacation. The hotel is clean, the food is fresh and with variety every day. The beach is truly turquoise water in this area and the swimming pools have a great environment with music and pool bar, I also felt safe at all times. I would definitely book this same place in the near future and would recommend.

Pros: 1. Apple vacation representative on-site all day. 2. Beach was well-maintained and clean. 3. Room was old but clean. 4. Entertainers were doing their best. 5. Convenient location of hotel. Cons: 1. Pool was cold and hot-tub was not even warm enough! 2. Only 4 small (8 person max) elevators for such a huge hotel, long waits times. 3.So many food options but quality was average. 4. Service at restaurants needed attention. 5. Very few pool-side seats get good sunshine due to main building covering the sun. 6. Inside the restaurant there was always a burnt oil smell, not good enough ventilation. 7. Hotel has very old design and spa is located very far to main spots.

My wife likes to experience staying in different hotels, so she is really picky about returning to same hotels, but she would be happy to return to this one. In fact we are coming back next year.

Shockingly disappointed

Seeing that this was our 3 visit to this hotel, we were disappointed that the services weren't as good as they use to be. The pool had bugs and leftover sunscreen floating at the top of the water, the renovations missed the mark on trying to give it a modern feel. It looks rather cheap and poorly designed. The guestroom smelled like a sewer. The roof needs to be repaired as we were on the Annex Building on top floor (6th floor). It rained during the evening which then leaked into our guestroom setting off the alarm which then leaked orange water down onto the nightdtand and bed that we were sleeping in. We shared with the staff what happened, we can back and they put a bathroom towel over the nightstand and changed our sheets. Lastly, the last morning we were there, we saw a cockroach crawling on the floor and up the wall. We shared with staff at check out and they thanked us but didn't seemed concerned. The Riu Cancun was a special place as my husband and I met there, married there and sadly will not be returning there after this last experience. On a positive, staff was friendly. Fidel in the Italian restaurant was AWESOME!

Great Stay!

Rooms clean and hotel spotless. Our stay was made even more magical thanks to Hernandez in the Miramar Restaurant. Heis a first class waiter, noticed from day one where we preferred to sit. Also took note of what drinks we liked, he is a real professional. All the staff are friendly and not just to have tips! We were not happy with our room on the 13th floor and the reception staff were more than happy to move us. They were alot more helpful that the TUI reps, who I found to be very rude and only wanted to speak to customers wanting to book trips with them. By the way the trips are alot cheaper if you book through the RIU rep. Look for the chaps wearing the green t-shirts by the sports bar!

Amazing Birthday Getaway 😍

My husband and I stayed at Riu Cancun from April 9- April 13 for my bday. This was our first time in Cancun and we had an amazing time. We are both in our late 20’s. CHECK-IN: Our flight landed at 11am and we were at the hotel by 11:40am. The front desk staff name Ceasar inform us that no rooms were ready yet and it will be in an hour. No Biggie! So we left our bags near the front desk and waited til 12pm for the restaurants to open for us to eat. We were back at the front desk by 1:10pm and still Ceasar said he had a lot of people he has to get rooms and looked like he didn’t know how to multitask and said give me a minute. After 45mins, we realized he still was helping a guest that was behind us in line and we decided to go to someone else for checkin. That person (I think name Julio) had us check in and room key to us in 2 minutes! 🙄 ROOM: We were in room 614 in the tall building. Even though we booked for a STANDARD ocean view room , our balcony view was Amazing!! And highly recommend for someone who book for a standard room to request it. It was ocean view plus a view of the quiet infinity pool and hot tub. Since it was my bday week, the staff decorated the room with balloons and gave me champagne, chocolate covered strawberries and fruit which was a nice gesture. Our room was 2 double beds pushed together and was very clean and wasn’t “musty” as some reviews mention. The shower had good water pressure and very hot water when we needed it to be. We didn’t hear our neighbors from the room unless we were both on the balcony, I can hear them but wasn’t bad. GROUNDS: The hotel grounds was always kept clean and nice. There is 1 party pool, 2 big infinity pools and 1 small infinity pool near the party pool. The party pool had a wet bar and played great music (hip hop, oldies, r&b) and was not obnoxiously loud. The pool opens 7am-7pm We only swam in 1 of the big infinity pool in the morning which seem like the perfect time to go. The water was not cold. The staff does a great job with wiping down, mopping and cleaning windows all the time. If you want to rent jet skis, kayak etc, there’s a place right next to the kids club that you can’t rent from. BEACH: Crystal blue clear water and white sandy beach. The ocean water was surprisingly very warm! Some of the beach lose sun around 4ish but there still some area that has sun. The beach was narrow but not overly crowded and was easy to find chairs. FOOD: For Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner, we only ate at the buffet. (I hate waiting especially for food) 😅 every night the have a theme for dinner. There’s a wide selection for everyone and even have a small vegan section for people who are vegan. Food was good and the service was better. My husband is a picky eater and he even enjoyed the food! DRINKS: Me nor my husband are “big drinkers” so don’t really know if drinks were watered down. I did have their guava punch juice with vodka and it was so good. ENTERTAINMENT: I only stayed for the beginning of the show and it was soooo bad! 😔 they did not kept my interest so we always walked on the beach at night or went back to our room. They need to hire a better entrainment crew. LOCATION: The location was perfect. Only 5 min walk from everything (supermarket, Starbucks, night clubs etc.) My “lady friend” came to visit while on vacation and I went across the street to buy tampons at the Souvenir shop, which was wayyyy cheaper then buying it at the hotel gift shop. There’s a lot of people concern about Cancun and if it’s safe. My husband and I are a young African American couple and not once did we feel unsafe. We did get approach a lot by locals trying to sell us excursions and weed lol. Overall the locals were very friendly! STAFF: Staff was very pleasant and professional. Some Spoke little to no English while others spoke it well. The housekeeper came everyday we were there to clean our room and gave us new towels. OVERALL: I would recommend this resort and had an amazing birthday. I didn’t see any obnoxiously drunk guest and felt safe the whole time. We did 2 excursions which we booked with a private company rather than the hotel.

Careful when you book and it’s not 4/5* standard.

We paid over £2800 for all inclusive here. It’s 5* hotel, with Thomson it’s 4T platinum but this is not the case at all. I had expectations on what I would expect (and these were not excessive or unrealistic). I expected a high standard of food, the room, the pool areas. Non were met. Staff in the hotel were lovely and couldn’t have been more friendly/helpful. The pool bar waiters were more than attentive with providing drinks through the day (with a tip of 50 Mexican peso, under £2) a couple of times through the day. Food - 5 restaurants. An Italian with the choice of 5 mains (only 1 of these was Italian), starters so basic. A steak restaurant with a choice of 2 steaks and a chef who couldn’t cook them (over cooked and dry and tasteless). The main buffet restaurant serving everything but to a very basic standard. I’ve been fed as well in a 3* hotel in Spain. The rooms - on a positive they were good size rooms. Tiny balcony. No electric socket near a mirror. Plastic (beach-like) furniture. Cheap. Pool area - this was lovely, however unbeknown to us we were there during spring break which meant the place was full of holidaying young adults (18ish). I’m not averse to music etc at the pool and we like an atmosphere going on, but this was at full volume with raucous entertainment every day, all for the spring breakers various dancing competitions, drinking competitions. The partying continued in the hotel until well into the night (4am most nights). I have written to Thomson and their response has been less than satisfactory. Basic response “sorry but.........” In all, don’t expect a 4/5* standard here as you will be disappointed. Don’t come here if you wish to eat well. Value for money absolutely shocking.

Awful Hotel for family holiday

Do not stay at this hotel with a family. It is like a 18-30 resort rooms are tired, worn and dirty, Our room balcony overlooked a roof top which was covered in rubbish broken glass, dirty towels, rice, cigarette buts, plastic cups. Booked with TUI as a platinum hotel, it stated rooms were recently renovated and swish, platinum description states stand out rooms. Our rooms were certainly not swish or stand out, tarnished glass, watermarks on furniture, broken hairdryer, dirty sheets, alchohol splashes on bed headboard, really bad smell we never unpacked! Pools carnage, drunk, swearing adults not a family hotel Evening entertainment is really rowdy, a lot of very drunk adults not a place to be with children Totally let down by TUI and RIU THIS HOTEL CERTAINLY SHOULD NOT HAVE A platinum STANDARD , and TUI should not be sending families there.

Great food, lovely beach, poor service.

Upon check in at Ottawa airport one of our bags was 1kg over weight. The male at check in made us move items from this case to another. He said "1kg is not a lot to me but it is to the airline!"( This is Sunwing's issue, not RIU Cancun, I know) We booked what was advertised as a 5 star hotel- RIU Cancun. The rooms were very basic, the service was at times very poor. It was really hit and miss regarding drink service on the beach, by the pools and in the buffet. We had to move rooms due to the screams of the people next door. As others have said, very thin walls. Security were called by other guests. Security then came to our room to see what was going on. We pointed out that the issue was next door. This screaming continued. On the third day at 0700 hrs we had enough and asked to be moved to another room. We were moved to a room with two beds instead of one, a broken TV and a worst view. We complained again and were offered our old room back! Finally we were moved to a room on the 11th floor. We also had to vacate our old room at 1000 hrs and did not get another until 1500 hrs. Maybe here was an opportunity for the hotel to excel and put things right, but no, no apology, nothing. On the last day I saw a man collapse and strike his face on the floor. he appeared to have broken his nose and was bleeding heavily. Staff at the hotel were trying to get him to stand despite the fact that he was out cold. They had his chin on his chest and were trying to wipe the blood from his nose.. I am a first responder and had to intervene as his airway was not open. There were several staff members on scene none of whom had any idea of basic first aid. One was a life guard. I place the man in the recovery position and raised his chin. I confirmed that he was breathing and had a pulse. The life guard started to attempt a strange form of sideways CPR on a subject who did not need CPR, before I told him to stop. In short the hotel staff were totally incompetent and could have potentially caused this mans death. When a Dr was finally called to the scene I had to almost push back past staff to pass on what had happened. I spoke to the hotel manager regarding this incident and he appeared indifferent. This does nothing to inspire me regarding safety at this hotel. Finally just prior to leaving we had to use the after check out shower/change area which had no towels. The food was very good. Lots of variety. 5 star food with 3 star service. The beach was excellent. Clean, well kept and plenty of space In short being made to move 1 kg of baggage is ridiculous, The service at RIU Cancun is well below what was advertised and/or expected and the staff were incompetent in a potentially life threatening situation. I would not go back. I have been to this part of Mexico multiple times and there are far better hotels for the same price. No coffee maker in the room, no robes. Oh and a message to RIUs manager- Please do not reply with how you listen and try to excel etc. You had every opportunity to do so while we were staying with you and it was an epic fail!
