There was nothing to fault about the hotel. Every member of staff went out of their way to make sure you were happy and satisfied 24/7, continuously providing you with drinks and excellent service. Food and drink were excellent with a wide range of choice. Rooms were beautifully decorated, giving a great view of the sea. The pool and beach areas were again stunning. You can completely relax here at this hotel and definately recommend it in the future. More>

Our holiday and wedding at Riu Cancun
Gemma R,
Mon Sep 26 08:46:29 EDT 2016
Travelled with my partner on 5th September 2016 and stayed for 2 weeks. Arrival Upon arrival check in was quick and easy. We were given our room key cards and towel cards and made our way to our room. Upon finding our room we discovered that our key cards did not work. Luckily a nearby maid let us in to the room. The room we had been allocated was on the very small side and the view from the balcony was non-existent. We were overlooking building work going on at the hotel next door. First impressions weren't the best!! After a 10 hour flight and the fact we had booked our wedding with the hotel this was a disappointment. We went back to reception and asked if we could change room. We were offered a move the next morning, normally this would have been fine. However the following morning we had wedding related meetings booked and I was eager to get my wedding dress unpacked so we decided to upgrade the room for a cost of just over 7000 pesos to a suite which we would could move into immediately. Not the best start but don't let this put you off. Room Our new suite was a very good size. Absolutely beautiful view from the balcony of the pool area and beach. The optics contained local spirits and the fridge was regularly filled with water, Pepsi, beer etc. The shower and bathroom were lovely and the HUGE bed (2 doubles pushed together) was very comfortable. Air con worked brilliantly. Only issue is that the rooms can be very damp, unavoidable being so close to the sea and the humid climate. Ensure that the balcony doors are kept shut and the air con on as the room becomes damp and floor slippery very quickly. The room was nice and we enjoyed our stay but I would rate the rooms as 4* rather than 5* as they are a little basic. The rest of the hotel I would rate as 5*. Hotel facilities/location Excellent location, walking distance to the strip with Coco Bongos etc. Buses run regularly up and down the hotel zone and are very cheap. We caught the bus to La Isla shopping centre with no issues, just hold on tight!! We were in room 358 and never had an issue with the lifts we used which were just around from the sports bar. Everything you could wish for is provided at the hotel. 4 large swimming pools, we preferred the quieter pool around the corner. Sun loungers do get taken early but we never really struggled to find free ones around the pool or beach. The beach is beautiful, yes a little rocky but this was no issue at all. Crystal clear waters, just stunning. Plenty of bars to get drinks from and a coffee machine in the lobby. We did watch the evening entertainment one night which had Katy Perry and Rihanna tributes, it was enjoyable and the animation team work so hard. Unfortunately we missed the Michael Jackson night. Entertainment does end fairly early in the night and then we were a bit stuck for ideas so usually just relaxed with a drink. We did find when walking around the hotel zone that we were constantly approached with people trying to sell us trips, taxis, souvenirs, meals in restaurants etc. Prices in Cancun were also steep. Food Had no real complaints about the food. Breakfast was our favourite meal of the day, huge buffet selection of everything you could wish for and all delicious. Cereal, yogurts, eggs, sausages, pancakes, waffles, pastries....etc etc etc. Lunch was also good, we ate at both the buffet and the Italian restaurant for lunch. Dinner was excellent at the buffet. I'm a vegetarian and always found something different to try. Desserts beautiful also. We also tried the Italian which was good. My partner who loves his steak wasn't impressed with the steakhouse however as the meat was very fatty, lots of other people seemed to enjoy it so maybe personal preference. The sports bar is also open 24 hrs where you can help yourself to burgers, sandwiches, hotdogs etc. Very limited on veggie food there as pretty much everything contains meat. Did not try the Japanese or gourmet restaurants. On the whole very impressed with the food and missing it now we are home! Hotel staff Cannot fault the hotel staff. Everyone is so friendly, so helpful and the hardest workers I have ever seen. The hotel is spotless! We did tip some staff but I think the service we received would have been just as good with or without tips. They are incredible. Hernandez at dinner was lovely, so friendly. Also Samuel at the Corner Bar, so friendly and remembered us from day one. Riu should be very proud of their staff. Wedding We had our wedding a week into our holiday on 12th September. Unfortunately it rained on the day but it didn't spoil a thing. Jennifer the wedding co-ordinator literally organised everything for us! So easy and stress-free. Our wedding was beautiful. The ladies in the spa who did my hair and make up were fab! We were treated like royalty at our wedding meal that evening and our room was decorated with rose petals, balloons and towel animals. Lovely touch. The hotel photographer was also brilliant. Due to the weather he offered us the chance to continue our photoshoot on the beach the following day when the sun was shining which we appreciated. Best decision we made to get married here. Both in terms of cost and stress-levels! Weather Definite Caribbean climate. The weather on the whole was beautiful. Very sunny, very very humid and baking hot! I burnt through factor 50 sun protection! We did have a bad storm the night before our wedding which was impressive to watch. We saw rain on 3 occasions over 2 weeks (all in the second week) but this basically lasted for around an hour each time and then the sky cleared. The weather is temperamental but we expected this especially during hurricane season and it didn't ruin our holiday in the slightest. Excursions Coco Bongos- brilliant night. We went for the Gold member package which was worth it for the seats overlooking the show and waiter bringing us drinks all night. Have to say my memory is hazy and don't plan anything for the following day! Chichen Itzá, long day with lots of travelling but well worth it. Our guide was so knowledgable. Loved the part of the day where we visited the Mayan Village and Cenote. Would definitely recommend. Dolphin Discovery - loved loved this! Had the chance to swim with sharks, stingray, manatees and dolphins. Then on a catamaran to Garrafon park, the actual definition of paradise, for free time to eat, scuba dive, zipline or just relax and take in the beautiful views. Isla Mujeres- one day we decided to get on the ferry which leaves regularly from the beach adjacent to the hotel and visit the island. Probably the best day of our holiday (other than the wedding!) We hired a golf buggy to explore the island and visited a sea turtle sanctuary and sculpture area with lizards. Brilliant day, do not leave before doing this! Check-out Very quick and organised. No issues at all. Been home a week now and wishing we were back! Will return in the future. More>

Just back from a 2 week holiday. Beautiful hotel. So clean. Staff are always cleaning. The rooms are great. Comfy bed, nice size balcony and big walk in shower. Optics in the room along with juice and water are replaced ever 2 days. The food here is great. We ate at the buffet most nights but decided to head to the Japanese restaurant for a change. It was lovely. The staff at the hotel are what makes it. They are all so friendly and hardworking. The entertainment team are brilliant. They work so hard. We headed out with them for a paint party which was great. Trips we booked were xplor (wasn't that great) dolphin discover is a must. Here you can swim with the Dolphins, sea cows and nurse sharks! Cocobongos is fantastic. The best trip we booked was a day swimming with sea turtles and cenotes. This was booked with the guys who come around the pool. I would book all trips with them. Cheaper!!!! The subbed situation was fine. We always had a bed at the beach and pool. Beach is a little rocky but it's fine. The supermarket along the road sells sea shoes very cheap. We flew on the Dreamliner and I wasn't too impressed with it. I had saw most of the films which meant it was a Very long flight for me!!!! The reps with Thomson weren't up to much. We only had dealings with one, Dean. Gives you all the haha chat on arrival meeting but on booking trips and information he just wants your money. Didn't seem to helpful to be honest. I would 100% recommend this hotel to anyone. Great location. More>
