We stayed Jan 5th to 19th. We arrived with around 15 other people with Thomson Holidays around 8.30pm. Check in was very quick and efficient and we were in our room on the sixth floor within 15 minutes. We had requested a high quiet room but they placed us in 638, the room stank of cigarettes and we had a lovely view on the annex wall. I went straight back to reception and they changed us immediately without any fuss.
We were in 432 which was lovely, clean and had a good sea view, happy days!! Never had any problems with waiting for the lifts. We used the quiet infinity pool beach area till around 1.30pm when the sun went behind the hotel. The water and bathing here was lovely and chilled with no rocks, the people were also the same with many families there. After lunch we would go to the rocky beach area close to RIU Palace next door. We were a bit more crammed in but we always got beds, in any case it was only for the last hour or so.
I would advise anyone who doesn't want the sea rocky to bathe anywhere from the lifeguard station towards the quieter pool area and jetty. The food was fantastic we both tried a bit of everything on different days and were never disappointed. We did both the Italian and steakhouse and enjoyed both especially the Italian at lunchtime.
The staff were amazing, friendly and helpful. I had a great craic with all of them especially Antonia in the lobby bar and Delfio in the restaurant. Pretty much stayed out of the Sports bar because the couple of times we went in for a sandwich it seemed to be inhabited by drunks. The one time I went to the Wet n Drinking pool bar a man was on a bar stool wobbling with the drink and shouted to the server "Hey Carlos what have you gotta do to get a drink around here", there was a swear word in the request, needless to say Carlos ignored him and served me. There is no need to be rude to anyone simply doing their job. We loved the entertainment even if it was a bit cheesy at times but there's no denying the sheer amount of work the staff put in. The place was spotless with people constantly cleaning.
Now the downside. I am by no means a smoker hater but why oh why do people put their cigarettes out in the sand and leave the butts there. I saw people of all ages and nationalities doing this, it drives me mad, get off your backside and get an ashtray. I even saw people smoking in the swim up pool and putting their butts in drinks glasses. This is not the fault of the hotel but i feel that they should enforce more rigid rules especially in the swimming pool area, I have visited many resorts in Europe but have never seen people smoking in a swimming pool before. People in the swim up pool never seemed to go to the toilet either!!!!
Visited Playa del carmen on the ADO bus from Cancun bus station, it took one hour and was comfortable and cost only around 120 pesos return, we both liked the beach and chilled out vibe so much so we went there twice. We went on the Thomson bar crawl which finished at Coco Bongos, what a fantastic night out, cost around 1000 pesos each but that was open bar and cover charge to Carlos n Charlies, Mandala Bay, La Vachaita and then Coco Bongos.
I needed to use wifi to speak to my daughter and by accident I found out that the selecto supermarket across the road had free lightning quick unlimited access. On the second floor there is a lovely cafe which serves pizza, pasta beer, wine and soft drinks etc, it has an open veranda which overlooks the crocodile lagoon I had a corona and pizza whilst doing this.
Also had a good night out at the marina at La Isla mall which has good bars and is a great place to watch the sunset. We also did a snorkeling /speed boat trip from here with jungle tours. It was a great couple of hours well spent blasting through the sea and mangroves before seeing some amazing fish. That was 1200 pesos for the two of us. We also did a catamaran day trip to Isla de Mujeres which we booked at the travel agents next to Starbucks across the road, it had an open bar and the crew knew how to get the party going, it was a fantastic day out with the beer and tequila flowing!!!
We also went to Tulum with the same company which gave you a couple of hours in Playa del Carmen on the way back, Tulum was stunning and was well worth the trip.
Overall we really loved the place and had it not been for the smoking issue would have rated an overall 5. We would definitely return as there is something for everyone here.

We just spent a week at the RIU Cancun from Jan 14-21/15. The entire trip from start to finish was beyond my expectations. The hotel itself, pools and beach were all beautiful. The food was awesome!! There were nightly shows and tons of activities provided by the lovely entertainment staff who were awesome!! They took time to get to know us and make our stay fun with a lot of laughs!! Special thanks to David and Omar for convincing us to take part in some activities and for making our stay the most enjoyable ever!! Also Alexis you were the best waiter ever. These gentlemen work hard all day long to ensure everyone are taken care off!! Hats off to the RIU Cancun for having such wonderful staff and a beautiful resort. We are planning a return trip for next winter and hopefully these staff members will still be there!!!

Cannot beat the location of this hotel. Right in the heart of the action. Clean rooms, good food, definite party atmosphere. Reserve a Junior Suite - avoid the tower. Junior Suites are more spacious rooms, no over heated elevator to your room; views of pool, etc. More of a couple or singles destination. Not really a family place although it would work for that. Staff are attentive and helpful especially those at the front desk/lobby area who assist with fishing excursions and the like. Avoid the reservation only restaurants - not worth the hassle. Sports bar is fun. Beach and pool areas are clean and fun. Solid hotel zone location - you can walk over to sister hotel to break up the routine. Walk across the street to shop, eat. The location makes this place.
Good location, great staff but cost cutting can be seen.

Our 4th stay at a Riu resort and we would rank this as our least favorite. Updated, modern hotel. We asked for an ocean view and did get a beautiful view of the quiet pool, beach, carribean sea as far as Isla Mujerres. Cost cutting could be seen in the room though as no clock radio or coffee machine. Would have been nice to make a coffee in the morning and go and sit on the balcony and enjoy the beauty of the view rather than having to go all the way down to the Sports Bar for an early or late coffee. The hotel staff were always working hard and always smiling. Great staff in the outdoor dining area. They welcomed you everyday and over the two weeks were there we felt very welcomed. The entertainment staff were happy and fun but the evening entertainment was the same as we have seen before so did not go. If you are sitting out in the evening use mosquito spray. You don't see them but they bite!
We did alot of exploring around Cancun using the local bus. 10.5 peso a trip and fast service.
The hotel is real close to Coco bongo and Seņor Frog. Five minutes to walk and very safe.
Food at hotel was good. We liked the Steak house for the Ribs! Very good, in fact went 3 times! People who had the steak never seemed to eat much of it. Japanese was also good. We never had problems making reservations and often went in the afternoon to do this.
If you go to the lobby bar you can ask for peanuts to nibble on. They don't advertise that they have them but if you ask you can get them.
The day trips by Nexus are getting very expensive! We went next door and took the ferry across to Isla Mujerres and then rented a golf cart and drove all around the island. Went to the North beach, beautiful water but you do have to pay for a beach lounger. Instead we went to a bar and ordered a couple Coronas and sat at their tables on the beach. Cheaper than renting the loungers!
We did go to the Riu Caribe to visit for an afternoon. Not impressed, very dated, crowded pool area and way less food choices than at the Cancun. I think the cost are about the same so I would recommend the Cancun for location, food, decor and pool area.
All in all, we enjoyed ourselves. Felt safe. Staff is great and very helpful. The director of the hotel should note that when we asked him for assistance he would not provide any help. His staff came to our assistance after we left him and helped us out with no problem.

This resort has all ocean view rooms with balconies. 15 floors plus an annex. Rooms closer to the elevator to 1/2 down the hall have the better views. Avoid adjoining rooms as neighbour noise is higher. The hallway has windows facing the road / lagoon. In other words only rooms on the ocean side of the hall. The balconies have 2 chairs, small table and a pull out rack to dry bathing suits. Our room had a king size bed, dresser, and two night tables and a small table with 2 chairs. There was plenty of space. The bed and pillows were comfortable. A door to the room from the room hall blocked any noise in the hotel hallway. The room hall between the bedroom and hotel hallway had a closet, fridge (restocked every 2nd day with plenty of water, beer and pop) Above the fridge were 4 bottles of liquor that dispensed shots. The bathroom had plenty of space with his & hers sinks and a very large shower. The shower had a window in it to allow light coming from the room / balcony slding door to also enter into the shower. The tiles in the shower are a bit slippery when wet so be careful. The balcony curtains block light, but there are also sheers.
Food - Miramar is the main buffet serves a wide variety of quality food. Plenty of fresh fruits, salad items, fish, fresh bread, meats and lots of cooked dishes to choose from. We felt we had plenty of variety / selection. There was plenty of inside or outside seating. The staff worked very hard to make each meal enjoyable. 3 specialty include La Toscana (Italiano) - pasta, stuffed Chicken breast, beef, grilled salmon, Turquesa (Steak house - rib eye, ribs, chicken, grilled shrimp), and the Kawachi (Japonesa) - sushi to start plus a good selection of dishes (we enjoyed what we had and I looked around and other people's dishes looked good and they appeared to be enjoying them. You need to book the specialty 2 days ahead, and the reservations are taken starting at 8 am in the main lobby (desk to right of Alamo rent a car) Saying this, La Toscana is open at lunch (no reservations necessary) and you can order off the menu or / and get food from it's small buffet, so we mostly reserved the Kawachi and Turquesa. The wine is a bit green (white is terrible) We ate everything and never got sick. The beach has swimmable spots and rocky sections. If you are a beach walker this will be difficult with many obstacles such as docks, breakwalls, and limited beach in competition with beach chairs.
Drinks - Many bars around the resort with plenty of selection, Dos Equis XX on tap, virgin & natural drinks as well. Mexican coffee cart in the lobby however we got cold coffee once so stop using it.
WIFI - you get 90 minutes free in the lobby per day BUT it was so slow I could not load my e-mail so I was forced to purchase unlimited WIFI for 7 days at a cost of $64 U.S. to check my e-mail daily
Tourists will be the only problem you will encounter here due to the lack of structure. It is a shame there are not smaller no smoking sections. Ash trays do seem concentrated in some large areas but you must walk down the main outside path past all the smokers to get to the main buffet, or tolerate smokers on the balcony next to you due to the lack of non smoking floors. The RIU has allowed a minority to affect a majority. You will also deal wih the rude / disrespecful drunks. MAYBE people should not be served when they have had too much to drink.
