3 star at best, live exposed wires in room
Able1991, Birmingham, United Kingdom

Just finished my stay at riu cancun, firstly if you are used to British or European 5 stars do not even bother, the only way you will get anywhere near a 5 star service is if you generously tip every member of staff you encounter! It seems that they are only interested in squeezing as much as they can out of you from the wifi to getting a table at the "a la carte" restaurants. Our room upon arrival was not as requested , as we are travelling with two young children I asked for a cot and sofa bed for my 6 year old ,there was no cot or sofa bed , just two double beds pushed together , which slid apart when you lay on them. The shower could only produce a trickle of cold water and even after 10 minutes of being left on it failed to produce any sort of warmth , the shower gel dispenser also fell apart when touched! To top this off as the bell boy was delivering our cases I lent against the wall by the balcony doors and received an electric shock from the door sensor which has been left with exposed live wires. At reception I was told Thomson had not paid for the family room that I had paid for and I had to wait til the next day to be "upgraded"to the family room, I had also not been injured enough to receive an upgrade to a junior suite, the staff offered a bowl of fruit ( from the buffet)as further compensation 😂. The food is good here and the restaurant staff are very attentive as long as you tip them, the beach was nice but what really let the hotel were the rooms and service outside of the restaurant, any problem you have you have to argue your point with the reception staff. For £5500 it was an absolute joke and we actually left for 5 days in the second week to take the kids to Disney world, where I stayed in a 3 star Avanti resort which outshone the riu cancun in all ways possible, great spacious modern rooms with genuinely friendly staff who couldn't help you enough, If I'm honest I will never come to cancun again , the general theme of the place seems to be rip off the tourists or beg for tips.

Christmas & New Year REAL review
MissD1984, Birmingham, United Kingdom

This was my first time in Mexico and I was very excited to spend my Christmas and new year here with my partner, daughter and another couple and there 2 children. After a 10 hour flight and then having my suitcase accidently mistaken for someone else's I was so happy to finally arrive at the Riu and also be reunited with my luggage. Check in was great very fast they explained everything and we had welcome drinks too. As a family of 3 we went up to our room which was 2 double beds and a strip of outside space. My heart sank...it felt very dingy almost prison like and I felt like all this money for this so we went down and for a few hundred more we upgraded our room. We were on the 3rd floor, we had 2 double beds, a beautiful pool view, a decent balcony, lots of wardrobe space a little living room area with a pullout settee bed. The room was a lot better BUT for some reason every night our bedding was wet and damp it didn't matter if air con was on or off it was damp and our clothes absolutely stunk it was really horrible. Due to it being so hot in the day the night time was really cold. Damp sheets for cover was awful. Towards the end of the holiday I started to get ill. The floor was very slippy and slidy and despite the cleaners coming in everyday the bathroom had an awful fish aroma to it. There was a bar in the room that would be stocked up daily and drinks in the fridge but no tea making facilities in the room. I thought this would of been a great touch as getting the lift all the way down wasn't great. Once my daughter was asleep you'd be lucky to catch the odd English film on the telly. The hotel staff were great they tried to help as much as they could, cleaner was lovely and friendly. There was entertainment every day round the pool and every evening. Christmas and New Year they put on an amazing feast abd entertainment it was incredible. They work so hard and they could never be faulted in that department. There are 3 restaurants the buffet is great and has something for everyone. The waiters are friendly enough and we enjoyed our time here, although one night to our absolute horror we looked down to find a dirty pair of pants on the restaurant floor. I was in tears it was a mixture of horror and hilarity that we are in this beautiful hotel and there are just dirty open pants next to my table, even the waiter was in shock and called for the manager it was unreal. As a sorry the hotel got us a table at the Japanese restaurant because the queue was really bad every night and they tend to cater to there own people first. The food was bland and nasty as a party of 7 we all left our food. There is also an Italian restaurant and a 24hr sports bar. The grounds are beautiful and there's cleaners everywhere you look. One thing I did find off putting was the toilets. There are only 2 toilets for the hotel. 1 in reception and 1 when your coming out the lift. When it comes to using the toilet they tell you to put your your tissue in a bin and not to flush it. The bin is open with no lid and a number of times I found myself cursing because some people are like filthy animals. As a women visting the female toilets I was disgusted at some of the things I witnessed and pitted the cleaners having to deal with it but again you can't control other people's actions but this should of been cleaned up and dealt with straight away a good few times I walked into the toilets and said No can't deal with this I'm going all the way up to my room for the toilet. The heat, open bins and soiled tissue spilling out... the smell was vile! My holiday here over all was lovely there was times I was amazed, the staff the grounds the entertainment the energy the food it was Beautiful but there was times I was very frustrated and confused such a beautiful hotel that had no tea or coffee in the room, no English Chanel TV, that was smelly and damp. That had poop spilling out the bin and casual dirty underwear in the restaurant. It was crazy but I did love my holiday and would stay at a Riu again. This is my honest experience of Riu Cancun there's little things to be improved but this is a lovely hotel.

Clean, well-equipped, friendly staff, good food, good shows

This is my first review, but I wanted to leave it because I depended strongly on reviews for selecting this resort. Also--- for other families. I took eleven people ranging in age from 13 to 73 and this resort worked out perfectly. I have stayed at quite a few all-inclusive resorts and was a bit hesitant to bring my children to one. After much research---and due to budget restrictions of sorts---we decided on Riu. I couldn't be happier with my choice! Even though we went at "peak season," it never felt extremely crowded. You were always able to get a drink (and top shelf, yummy drinks were easy to come by.) The property is small enough and set up in a way that it is easy to find other guests when you want to. Everything is extremely clean. The individual rooms and the public areas are kept up very nicely. We loved the ocean front view from our balcony. The buffet had many, many delicious options and the "sit down" places were acceptable (nothing extraordinary in my opinion, but decent.) We lucked out with great weather, which always helps! The shows were solid, not over the top, but entertaining. And there was a different one each night. I would revisit this resort in a heartbeat. The only negative things I can really come up with are---shorter hours on the beach due to the way the resort blocks the sun, a bit hard to get into the sit-down restaurants for a large group, and tricky hot water in the rooms (there was an art to getting it out of the shower that took me a day to master---but there was always hot water.) Again, I had to really work to come up with these. Overall, the place was amazing!

Good value for the money. Great food, staff is fantastic. Spa is great. Great location. Only con: The building is so tall, it blocks the sun after 2/3 pm in the pool, so you'll need to mosey to the beach for late sun. That's ok for me however, as I am fair skinned.

Lovely hotel....but with issues!

So we thought we would have a change fromThailand at Christmas and New year and head for Mexico...Cancun, We were undecided whether to stay in the Rui peninsula or the Rui Cancun approx £1,000 in price between the 2. We went for the cheaper option it was hard to see what there was on offer for and extra 1000, apart from 1 more swimming pool a few less rooms, we did manage to walk through the ground of the peninsula even though weren't supposed to, can't say there was anything that made me go WOW in what we saw, and the Peninsula is much further out of town it's bus (if you dare but they are very cheap) or a cab ride there and back. Luckily at the Rui Cancun party zone was just 5 minutes walking up the road. Party zone is fun very busy, but it's hard to just got get a beer somewhere, we only found monkey business Alex is the best waiter there, you can sit outside and inside they have live music, so it's pretty cool there....everything else is drinks packages, so you haggle with the many many agents for a good price, normally it then gets you into 3 bars like Congos, lavakita , Mandela bar and beach bar sometimes, your drinks are included in your price...just getting them sometimes is hard work!!and my partner went to the bar several times they would only serve him 1or2 drinks if I went up I'd get 4? Most odd and annoying!!! Back to the hotel staff in the bars all cool sometimes there are just so busy they are stressed out at the pool bar in the day. Do make sure you ask for Smirnoff vodka if that's what to like! Corner bar is lovely quiet and you can sit outside with proper made cocktails in the warm air, the lobby bar again very nice, I found the air on was on far to high I needed a cardigan to be in there! Pleanty of entertainment on every night and then the Pacha nightclub open till 2 for a little boogie and drinks, then the sports bar is open 24/7 with food ( which is sandwicheds cheese and ham, some times salad containers, mixed fruit containers sometimes there would be pastries there, hot dogs and hamburgers you can heat in the microwave there, and always warm nachos cheese sauce and some bits to put on top) so your never gonna starve,,,just don't expect too much for 24hr food. Food was all good generally but it was luke warm for me I like my food hot I'm afraid, they seem to have a good variety of foods. Got told the steak restaurant was very nice and we did go to the Japanese restaurant which was a 1st experience....it was nice but I'm glad I wasn't doing all the queuing to get a table which friends had done for 3 nights on the trot and only got in on 3rd attempt. Think out hotel defo had more going on and atmosphere than the other hotels we'd seen, things going on in the day as well. Beach isn't very wide you have to be tactical where you choose your sun beds ( if you can get them) because the hotel casts a shadow over all the pool beds by midday, so to get the longest sun of the day needs to be down the stairs by volleyball pitch anywhere in that areais the best for sure!!! The restaurants were all cleaned and staff were very good, my biggest gripes are there is ONE set of toilets to cover everyone from the beach to the pool to the bars restaurants 5 ladies toilets is not enough so if your on the beach you've got to walk all the way up there, and the other set of toilets is in the lobby the far end...and that's it for such a big hotel it's ridulous, same with having 4 very hot and stuffy lifts for the hole building, so at night you can get ques!! My other gripe is we stayed in room 107 I noticed a few damp patches of mould and as the week went on...they got bigger and bigger all round the headboard at the sides of our bed, every time I got in the bed it felt damp, kept turning air con off and cleaner kept putting it on when she came in, the bed and sheets felt damp I slept with 2 blankets on me I couldn't warm up in that room and you can smell the mould in the air con when it's on!!! So we complained and got moved to 937 you could feel it so much warmer soon as you got in there ( but was told when I went to get my new room key the decorators were in...what the hell the painting???? I'm guessing over mould!! 2nd room was better, but when that cleaner put the air con on it stunk of mould badly, we had air con on wed and thurs night before we left I was awake at 3 am felt like I was being strangled and then the cold came on. Great hotel great staff great location...would I stay there again? Mmmm Maybe if I was high up away from the worst damp had to wash even the clean clothes we bought back as they smelt damp...yuk!! I spoke to several on the plane on the way home and people stayed in the Rui Pennisula said they could smell damp and mould as well, another lady who stayed an hour and a half from Cancun, said she felt damp and could smell it, my friend went 8 years ago and said she could smell it and had to wash everything, so I can only guess...It's a MEXICAN thing???? I've never encounter that with all the other air cons I've used in various countries, and I've never ever heard SO many sick people coming home on plane before.....so something didn't seem quite right! We can't all be that wrong, if it was just one hotel that would be different but it wasn't. So for me IF and it's a big IF I went back I would go to Playa del Carmen or beaches near Tulum. I just wanna go sit in a bar have wander round then maybe go to another bar and buy however many drinks I want, all this package stuff is hard work and cheap booze....or just get very drunk before you get to the bars...then if you get served that's a result!!!!!! Unless you pay to be in the top seats with waiter service all the time!!!! Coco Bongos is a must....do the Thompson bar crawl followed by cocos was cheaper and fun you can find the reps in most hotels certainly the Rui ones. Oooh and be very very careful, while it is great they are trying to keep the place clean they are forever washing the floors!!!!!! But they are SO dam slippery they are really dangerous, saw an older lady go over ended up with her arm in a sling, saw so many kids fall over one cut all his lip, and so many people slipped and just make a really good recovery including myself, so dangerous it's bad!!!!! So all in all I had a great holiday met fantastic people....but won't be rushing back there anytime soon...far too many other places that don't have mildew hopefully....Happy Travelling peeps 😃😃😃
