Shooting on the Beach Will Cause Me To NEVER Return
ERIK F.
Nov 22 2017
On Thursday, November 17th at 10am, the local drug cartel entered our beach and started shooting a semiautomatic weapon on our beach. There were about 200-300 people out on the property that morning running for their lives. We are LUCKY to be alive. While this hotel is beautiful, we are not safe in Mexico and we will never be returning and I will let every person I come into contact with know they are not safe. Your Amstar sales reps are TERRIBLE. They lie when selling you a excursion and the excursions by Cancun Adventures are a RIPOFF. If the front of the hotel looks like a fortress, the drug cartels should not be able to open fire on the beaches. We felt safe and we should not have ever felt safe. Shame on anyone who sells to people looking for the beach dream. Because we THINK we are safe and since they have nothing on them to protect us, we are NOT. I will never book another apple vacation again to Mexico. You should make people aware of how UNSAFE Mexico is. Warn them. Because they may not return alive.

Excellent experience

I was skeptical after reading the reviews of this resort. After going and experiencing it, my wife and I are very disappointed at all of the negative comments that we read. We have absolutely no complaints whatsoever about anything we did so or experienced at this resort. We would highly recommend this resort to anyone and would hope that the bad reviews will not deter anybody from going to this destination.

we paid for a adult only hotel and we stayed in a family hotel. We asked to have our room changed, but was told we would have to pay $150/night to make this change. There was to many staff workers stopping you every time we walked out of room trying to get you to schedule a tour of some type. We were here to celebrate my husband's birthday and relax, not to be bothered and harassed.

Very clean, hotel staff was great! Food quality / taste was horrible. Also unhappy that staff told us they do not wash dishes with dish soap. They literally dunk glasses in a sink full of water and re-serve to hotel guests. Nobody could wash a baby bottle during our 9 days at hotel. The buffet had flies all over the food (gross) but majority of the other restaurants were satisfactory. French restaurant was good. Mexican restaurant was good. Would be nice if there were more options for breakfast and lunch.

We came with a part of 16. All was good except getting into restaurants in the evening. Major issue one night in the Oceana with another customer. Thought workers could have handled better. Pool nice. Beach nice but some construction was under way and made for extra noise. Carlos on beach was excellent!!! Myra in preferred lounge was great! Rooms were beautiful. Clean and spacious. Fun was had by all.

The resort was nice but the bugs were unbearable!

I had a great time at the resort but the food was subpar and I will have scars from all the bug bites. I have been to this part of Mexico several times. I have never encountered as many bugs as there were at this resort. Other guests warned us about the the seaweed life that were in the ocean so I didn't go into the ocean at all. I was by it one day out of the trip. I have so many scars from all of the bug bites it is worse than when I had chicken pox! I'm going to go to a doctor or dermatologist to see if anything can be done to speed up the fading of the scars. I have great memories of my friends wedding there but I didn't expect to have the unwanted souvenirs of the bug bite scars all over my body!

The infinity pool and beach was beautiful. The bars on beach and pool were great. Our room was too warm for us (74 degrees) and it would not go lower. Restaurant availability was scarce, 2 of them closed twice in one week and food quality was fast food like. I believe it was too much to pay for the trip but if it were less money in the future, I would return and make mental note of the food.

Fantastic vacation and wedding!

We came to this resort to help celebrate our friends' wedding. The night before the wedding we had a beach bonfire and s'mores bar, with little tiki huts, shish-ka-bobs on the grill, the hotel staff did an excellent job outfitting for this event. The wedding itself was beautiful, also held on the beach. From the ceremony we moved to the celebration, which had a great setup on the beach, amazing food and hors d'oeuvres, a mariachi band, lit up dance floor, cigar roller - the works! The overall stay was excellent as well. The resort has an infiniti pool right on the ocean, with the friendliest staffed swim up bar - Hector was awesome! Introduced us to some tasty shots and taught us some bar tricks. The pool side service was always attentive - Santiago was our man! The food choices were also amazing - each night oceana turns into either a steakhouse or a seafood house - both of which I'd highly recommend. On another level, Bordeaux and Portofino were outstanding and very classy. The world cafe always had good choices and service - but I kept forgetting that men are not allowed sleeveless shirts in there. There was also a daily paella made in a giant pan, and having made a few myself, I have to admit, they know how to make a paella! There was also coconut drinks on Wednesdays and Saturdays, which we took advantage of, and then ate the coconut. Our room was service multiple time per day, and if you end up with Beatriz, you'll be in good hands - we lit incense every night, which were always stocked, it's the little things that count most. Overall, I'd have to say I have only praise for the resort. Great time, great food, will highly recommend to friends, and will hopefully be back soon!

Beautiful Resort, Dangerous Area
Vacationers44,

Beautiful resort! Pros: staff, rooms, service, clean, great sandy beach. Family oriented. Cons: violent crime, jellyfish stings, food is sometimes poor, remote location. Far too many weddings that inhibit other guests. Loud music until 11pm. Went in mid November with a family of 4. Gang related murders at neighbouring hotel, semi automatic gunfire had me rushing my wife and kids to safety. No police or security presence, staff downplayed the situation. Google Cancun and Riviera Cancun/Maya escalating crime before deciding to vacation here.

Terrible food!

Wedding of our Dreams
LindaBella81, Halifax, Canada
Wed Nov 22 09:15:31 EST 2017
We had our wedding week at Dreams Riviera Cancun from Nov 4-11, with our wedding date being on Nov 7. We purchased the Ultimate Wedding package. Overall, we had an excellent experience. Natalia, our wedding coordinator, is outstanding at her job. She will go above and beyond to make sure your wedding is perfect and how you want it. We were originally going to get married by the Gazebo based on photos, but its deceivingly close to the main pool and very loud. So, we asked Natalia if she could move our ceremony to the beach less than 48 hours before the wedding. Natalia was able to make the change and we're so thankful! The beach ended up being a better location for what we were looking for. Everything that we asked for during our email correspondence prior to our arrival happened. From the décor, our flowers, the music, the reception, the service, the photo and video team and our DJ...we couldn't have asked for a better experience. Below are more of the pros: - We had a separate check in for the bride and groom which was fast and efficient. The welcome glass of sparkling wine was also a nice touch; - My wedding dress and husband's uniform was steamed / ironed the night before the wedding and returned to our rooms on time; - Flowers were fresh and gorgeous; - Violinist (extra cost) really impressed everyone at the ceremony and did a wonderful job; - The staff at the spa did a good job with our hair and make up (make sure to bring a photo of how you want your hair and make up done); - The Officiant at our ceremony spoke perfect English and was fantastic. She read the script that we provided Natalia flawlessly; - The Mariachi band during the cocktail hour were a big hit with the guests; - The food and service at our reception was outstanding (the soup seemed to be everyone's favourite dish); - Our wedding cake looked exactly like the picture we had provided to Natalia; - Our DJ, Mauricio (extra cost) did a fantastic job and played the songs we had previously discussed with him via email; - The sound system during the reception worked perfectly...no glitches; - Our room was decorated with rose petals the evening of our wedding, and they also drew a bath, but my husband and I partied with our guests all night and didn't make it back to the room until pretty late, so we didn't use it. The gesture was nice though; - There was some construction happening at the resort, so Natalia threw in some extra decorations for us at no extra cost. We appreciated this so much as we wanted to keep within our budget. Her additions helped make out wedding even more beautiful than we imagined. - Dreams Riviera Cancun has one of the best lobby bars I've ever been to at a resort. This is where our wedding group met up every evening for the shows, to listen to music, or just have a few drinks. This is also where we went after the wedding, followed by the dance bar on the resort; - We hired Adventure Photos at the resort to do our photos and video. I do recommend them and they do a fantastic job. A huge thank you to Samuel who stayed at the reception a little longer than he was supposed to in order to get some shots during our speeches. I haven't seen our video yet, but I can't wait! Cons / Disappointments - As the bride and groom, we were hoping for an upgraded room upon arrival, which didn't happen; - Our room ended up being right next to some construction. I was woken up at 4am the night before the wedding due to construction right outside my window. I was planning on getting ready with my bridesmaids in my room, but asked to get ready in a different room because the construction noise was so loud outside our balcony. I understand that a lot of this is outside the control of the resort staff. But they were able to help out by letting us get ready in a different room for the day, which demonstrates the excellent service this resort provides. - The staff left little treats (chocolate covered strawberries for example) in our room every evening, but they didn't put any plastic wrap over it. As a result, when we got back to our room late at night, the treats were covered in little ants who were attracted to the food. I recommend the staff always wrap the treats in plastic wrap. There are weddings happening daily at this resort, and the staff are clearly very experienced and know what they're doing. I highly recommend Dreams for a wedding. A tip for anyone planning on getting married there, or any other resort: make sure you assign someone in your wedding party to tip the staff the evening of the wedding. This is something my husband and I forgot about, and we feel awful about it. Thank you Dreams Riviera Cancun for giving us the wedding of our dreams :)

Pros and cons

Wed Nov 22 05:58:58 EST 2017
Pros:Food was Amazing, shows were amazing, kids club staff were amazing and the hotel looked pretty clean Cons: Rooms don't have much privacy with the bathrooms and showers. Walls are thin and you hear every movement that goes on in the hallway or rooms above you. I was woken up every morning by the people who walked the hallways and made noise. Lights blinking in the bedroom when I was trying to go to sleep and the shower head and bathtub had too much rust. Now for the scary part. There was a shooting on our beach where one person was left dead and the body just lying there for a few hours. Not the most relaxing thing to see. The crime rate has gone up around this town so be advised

Great experience despite issues out of control of resort

The resort staff was great. Rain one day made things not great and the slippery tile in doorways hit my knee too many times. There was an episode on the beach between excellence and dreams which was extremely scary. The staff handled I️t very well and totally made us feel safe and reassured
