Barcelo Maya Resort

Starting with our great travel adviser, Marisa Stephens, getting things booked, all the way until check out, we had a wonderful experience. Check in was quick and easy, and they brought out cocktails for us at check-in. The rooms were clean and stocked regularly with drinks and snacks. The air conditioning worked well. The food in the restaurants and buffets was great because they had so many things to choose from. Each meal was great! The bar service was convenient because they have different bars all over the place, and the staff works hard to make things that you will like. The beach was clean, and they kept it up every night. The pools were spotless, and there was an abundance of things to do surrounding the pools--even if you're not necessarily a swimmer. There was great entertainment at the resort, and there was also great shopping. The mall and the Plazas Mexicanas offered places to buy souvenirs at reasonable prices... and most of them are open to a little haggling. There were 24 hour conveniences, as well, so even if you're a super late night owl, there are still things to do. The transportation was prompt, and the drivers were courteous. There was even a casino there, although I didn't personally partake. Overall, it was a great hotel resort, and it's definitely one that I would recommend.

Mexico Barcelo Maya

We had an awesome time at Barceló. The staff is very friendly and eager to please. The grounds we very clean, I even saw someone painting. They rake they seaweed on the beach daily. I cant wait to go back next year! The housekeeper came daily and did an excellent job! Whenever we needed beer or water in our room, we called the front desk and they were there instantly. Barceló really cares about their customers. I felt safe and I hope to bring others with next year.

Barcelo's beach was great.

A little bit of a shaky start when you get off the transportation van and are told you are not on the hotel check in list, but they guided us to the premium club check in since I had my Apple Vacation papers and got us a room(turns out it wasn't the right room and everyone had us listed in the room next door all week including the check out people). We were supposed to have a king bed but ended up with two doubles and found out our actual room we were supposed to have next door with the king was empty all week......bummer but not much to be done on the last day when you find out......The maids were good overall but didn't make any extra effort....floors were a little sandy a couple of nights. The wait staff was hit or miss some were wonderful and some you wondered if they would ever show up with your drink or to even take a drink order....bars were the same way. Loved the beach itself which is what we went for and loved the coves and snorkeling and sea life. The shows weren't all that but we did see one good one. I am a picky eater and always found something but like always I wound up eating the same things over and over. We would definitely return and next time I will check and double check I'm getting the bed I asked for before I go to my room.

Musty AC transferred smell to clothes and luggage
JESSE G.
Apr 18 2018
This was my third time to Barcelo Maya. I must have just gotten a bad room. The AC had a moldy and musty smell. As you spent time in the room, you'd get used to it, but when we got home, I was able to smell how bad it actually was when I opened my luggage. The room was far too humid. The mattresses also must have had some type of plastic liner under the sheets as you'd wake up sweating if under the covers. If you pulled them back, you'd freeze now matter the AC setting. Just a bit strange. Don't take this as me being sour. I thoroughly enjoyed this stay, but I don't think if I go again, that I would accept such a smell again.

I will never ever have another person travel with my family again. I'm sure they have an ear full for anyone that will here. It's was a mediocre trip. Buffet, snack bar food was less then mediocre as well. The best meals we have were at the A la carte places and we could only get into 3 of them because it was so booked up during this week. Of Course we traveled at the most busy time of the year, but lack of shade on the beach is an issue along with people securing their pool side shade the night before by holding towels out for the entire day is a bit ridiculous too. That was very frustrating. The low end alcohol made many of us sick through out the week. One of our girls did find a blue pill in the bottom of her drink that she received directly from the bar tender. The mother went nuts on the guy. The kids received rashes and sores all over their bodies from the nasty condom broken cup filled pool near the tropical all week....It was shockingly surprising how the resort DJ's encouraged this behavior and mayhem all week long. Its was a close to Sodom and Gomorrah as I could describe. Marijuana and drugs were sold out in the open and as freely as people wanted. The bar tenders making out with girls all over the bar area and having an open party in front of parents and families. I and my friends chose to stay near the Colonial pool where we felt it was keep separate from the busyness of the mayhem...but will never return to this resort again The workers are kind and work hard. Hardest workers I've seen, but Spring Break is not a time of year I ever want to travel during ever again.

My Experience
DORIS F.
Mar 07 2018
My room was very nice but they didn't have any wash cloths. I asked for wash cloths but they said they didn't have any. Another person asked for wash cloths and were handed 2 of them. After that they were told they didn't have any. I think they should have wash cloths... At the pool, they kept running out of light beer. This seems odd when they have several tappers. These things didn't spoil my vacation but is an area where the hotel could use improvement. The entertainment SUCKED. It was so boring that we all decided they planned it that way so people would go to their room! Which we did. It was a great vacation and we were very pleased with Apple Vacations - next time...new destination.

Needs Improvement

This was our 4th trip to the Barcelo and we were disappointed in the attitude of the bar staff. Unless they was you with a wad of cash in your hand, they would basically ignor you or take a long time to wait on you even thought they were not busy. Also, they no longer serve premium liquors; only the cheap stuff unless you pay extra. The food buffets were O.K., but pretty much the same thing every day whereas they used to have a different variety every day. Last, BUT not least was our check-in upon our arrival. There were only two clerks at the desk (about 5 PM) and about 30 people waiting to check in; we stood in line for 1 hr. 20 min. This was just unacceptable, therefore we will be choosing another hotel on the beautiful Riviera Maya for future trips.

3rd Time's a Charm

Apple Vacation provides great service from booking to return. Hotel property is mid-sized, easy to navigate, and has all the amenities one would expect. It is not the highest of luxury, but it is absolutely wonderful. The pool area is gorgeous, but the pool water is not heated; winter pool water is very cold. Ocean/beach is also beautiful, and there are plenty of chairs. The beach is a bit rocky and difficult to enter in many spots, but the water is calm and lovely once you're in. Water shoes are recommended for easier entry/exit. Evening entertaining is sub-par; almost laughable most nights. Just go because it's fun... not because it's trying to be a Broadway knock-off.

Ok its nice you can use 4 resort areas, so for sure its big but there was not so much to see... most customers was families with kids. Bars was empty same with pools. Pools water was freezing! Ocean was much warmer than pools. Food was pretty good in buffee but always same, they change nothing. A la carte... japanese one suck. I wanted to cry when they overcooked tuna, lobster, swordfish and didnt make duck skin crispy. Italian restaurant was good. Staff is not so nice, they dont really talk with you but laugh behind your back making fun of you. Bed in room is rock hard.

Just home from a lovely stay at this hotel. Staff fantastic! Especially, Antonio and Gilberto in the tequila bar and Jorge (waiter) in buffet in tropical lobby and the receptionist in Veracruz (forget to take her name) Food of an excellent quality, we tried al la carte but open buffet just as good! Pool and beach fabulous and also the day to activities available, definitely something for everyone/any age. Enjoyed the hydrotherapy pool for the day rate of $50 US dollars also a great introduction if you don’t want to pay for massages etc. Room was the only let down. Constant odour of mould, however when we reported this to our rep, we were advised that this is normal due to the humidity of the country, which I suppose can not be helped. All in all a great place to stay, make sure you take your fit bits, daily steps will go up due to the sheer size of the resort, not a bad thing after all the food and booze lol!

HUGE Resort, Beautiful Beach, Grounds and Pools, But. . .
UGA1, Atlanta, Georgia

The Barcelo Maya Property in Xpu-Ha, Mexico is beautiful and HUGE. So be prepared to walk quite a bit. There are four different hotel areas in the resort including: the Maya Palace, Tropical, Colonial, and Caribe. Each has two buildings and their own restaurants and buffets. The pools are enormous and there are areas designated specifically for children. The landscaping, coconut palms, beach and sea are beautiful. But be aware that there are NO umbrellas at the pools or beach. Palms are sufficient on the beach and there are areas that partially protect you from the sun at the pool. They offer large theaters with various shows during the week. We really enjoyed the Mexican Fiesta show. It is a very nice property. Rooms and Dining - Before I booked my trip, I called Barcelo directly to inquire about the different types of rooms and access to restaurants in the evening, as I read that you must have a certain type of room to access the specialty restaurants for dinner, including the Maya Palace. I was told that one must book a premium ocean front Jr. suite in order to have access everywhere and premium alcohol. I even called again to confirm. However, upon arrival at the resort's premium check-in, we were told that was not true. One must have a full premium ocean front suite in order to have access everywhere and premium alcohol. Without this option, you can't eat at the Maya Palace or visit its bars, restaurants or buffets at all. So if you have a Jr. ocean front room, you may dine in the other restaurants with a 24 hour reservation, and have premium alcohol, but nothing at the Maya Palace. If you book a regular room, you need to check on what all you are/are not able to access. I believe you may get 2 tickets for one of the restaurants, but have to eat at the buffets on the other nights, and I don't think you get premium alcohol. But please check this with the hotel, not Barcelo corporate. See my review of the Riu Palace, Playa Del Carmen where everything was available to all. This is NOT the case at The Barcelo property. Staff - Barcelo management really needs to better understand that many of their guests from other countries do not speak Spanish. Many staff members, in various jobs, do not speak English at all. Others are limited. Sometimes this was an issue. Most of the waiters in the restaurants, in the evening, and breakfast were able to speak English to a point, and were very nice. Even though tips were included, we always gave them a tip unless the service was really bad. . .which leads me to the beach bars and beach buffets. Many of the waiters and bartenders in these areas seemed to care less if you were waiting to order a beer or drink. Many times they would stand around talking while you were looking right at them. Then, when they finally took your order, there was no greeting, no smile, no words. We experienced similar behavior at the buffets. No interest in helping at all until you had to call them over to your table. They really need to address this. Other guests we met at the pool had experienced the same treatment. The Dolphin Show - PLEASE someone save these poor creatures. They perform daily (on the Barcelo property) but their pool enclosure is way too small. It seems very cruel in my opinion.

Our time at Barcelo was time spent in paradise. We ate well, drank better and laughed more. The staff were quite pleasant and it made for a wonderful experience. The food was plentiful and delicious with many options. Rooms were standard but with a wonderful view. Advise to take some type of moisture protection however, rooms were very damp Great experience!!
