The resort is very well designed. Enjoyed Freddie with the mobile pool bar. Rooms were great and food very well done at the specialty restaurants. Cecelia was another great server, beautiful smile and wonderful service.

Great family resort

We returned home yesterday, 1/17 from the Riu Dunamar. I believe this was the 6th or 7th all inclusive trip my wife and I have taken to the area, but the first time we've taken the kids (ages 11, 7, and 5)with us. I was concerned about the safety of traveling through the city of Cancun since we normally stay in the hotel zone and avoid the city. However, we were on a shared transfer, which was a limo style bus that held around 20 people and I did not feel unsafe at all, and actually quite enjoyed seeing the 'real life' areas of Mexico. It was an eye opening experience for the kids as well. Upon arrival to the resort we expected to be greeted with champaign or some other drink and a refreshing towel as we were escorted to the front desk. However, the welcome was not as grand as we've seen in many other resorts. We were eventually given a non-alcoholic "welcome drink" while we waited in line to check in. Our room was ready when we checked in (around 4 pm). The room was fabulous for a family. The two room family suite had two bathrooms, each with a double sink, shower and toilet. One room had 2 twin beds and a pull out couch, the other room had a king bed. There was only one door to the hallway, which was nice, however, the alcohol dispenser and refrigerator full of beer was located in the hallway where the children could easily get into it without anything to prevent their access, and it could be possible for them to go outside without anyone in the king bed room knowing about it. The electricity in the room goes out unless the door key is inserted into a slot near the door. (The air conditioner did stay on without a card, but the air conditioner goes out when the patio door opens.) We left one of our room keys in the slot and left the room once and the maid took the key. We had to go to the front desk to get it back. We tried using a towel card in the slot and it worked. Be careful if you try this because if they take a towel card they may try to charge you the $75 they charge for a lost towel card. We brought towels from home and locked the towel cards in the safe the entire trip. Better to bring a cheap towel than lose a $75 card or have a towel stolen and get charged $75. I understand the amount of energy they must save is likely very substantial, so if it's going to keep the price down, I'm fine with having to insert the card, but it was rather inconvenient. After check in, we walked to the beach. It was very beautiful with water calmer than we typically see at the hotel zone. There is a large amount of seaweed, but the tractor and rake came through multiple times a day and they did a very good job of keeping it cleaned up. The grounds, much like the beach, were well maintained and highly manicured. The facility was not disappointing in the least. We ate at the buffet and several of the restaurants. Restaurants did not require reservations and were first come first serve. We did not have a wait at any of them, but we were typically ready to eat right around 6:30 pm when they opened. The menus were very limited with only about 3 options. It seems most of the options on the restaurant menu were also available at the buffet, but it was nice to be waited on rather than self serve at the buffet all of the time, although the waiters and waitresses were rarely great and often times barely mediocre. With mediocre wait staff and the same food on the buffet, it seemed most people ate at the buffet for all meals, and that's why there weren't waits at the restaurants. The food was not spectacular, and not as good as some other resorts where we've stayed, but it was definitely more than adequate. The buffet had so many options that anyone should be able to find something that they would like. I will say, timing seemed to play a role in the quality. For example, my wife and I often had the same things on our plates and one would be better than the other (i.e. rubbery noodles in the past vs. good noodles), despite filling our plates within minutes of each other. We often filled our plates with numerous things and tried all of it, then went back for more of the best items. There were often things that went uneaten, but we never had a problem finding things that were good. The shows in the evening were good and we definitely enjoyed them, although the mosquitos were also in attendance every night. We all left with mosquito bites despite using insect repellent. The beach party was one of the best evening events we've ever attended at a resort, although the fire show didn't start until well into the party and it was getting late for the kids (around 10 pm start time). The pools were nice enough, and the swim up bar was fun. At no time did we have any difficulty finding a place to sit and the removable shade curtains were nice and easy to adjust above all of the chairs. The staff did a great job with the entertainment pool and played a lot of great games. My complaint would be there weren't any waitresses around the pool. There was a liquor cart pushed around with someone making drinks, but it was a long wait between. Bring a big tumbler and plan on going yourself to have it filled. We did see bottles of top shelf liquor on the liquor cart, but whenever we asked at any of the other bars they told us they didn't have it. It also seemed like about a 50% chance that the bartender would make a drink they way we wanted it and some didn't know how to make drinks that were made at other bars on the resort. The bartenders did not impress me. The water park was wonderful. The kids and my wife and I all loved it. I do think they should allow drinks to be brought into the water park and they do not. We would've spent more time there if we could've watched the kids and had a drink at the same time. Instead, we often gave the older kids a limit (10 rides for example) and after that we went back to the beach or the pool. This might be part of why there was never a line on the slides. My youngest was not big enough for the big slides, and my 7 year old barely made it. All 3 of my kids can swim, so they didn't make an issue out of it, but they do say the adult park is for ages 12 and up. I think the height requirement is likely enforced more than the age. Do not take kids that can't swim on the big slides! We took advantage of the free kayaking but didn't partake in any other of the water sports. We discussed taking the tour to Isle Mujeres on the boat that leaves from the water sports area pier, but we did not wish to spend the $75/adult and $60/child. We heard great reviews of it from other guests. The excursions obviously cost extra, as do the massages, but what bothered me was that the pool table in the sports bar was an additional charge. I feel this should be included. We didn't make it to the night club or stay up much later than the end of the shows around 10 pm. Our room was right above the sports bar, and the show was easily heard in the room, but we went to it most nights and had no problem falling asleep as soon as it was over. Beds were very comfortable. There were constantly things to do for people of all ages all day long. The kids enjoyed the cupcake decorating, and they loved being able to swim up to the bar and order a pina collada. My suggestion would be that if you're looking for a place to take kids of any and all ages, then look no further as mom, dad, and the kids (even grandma and grandpa) can all find something to do here that is entertaining and all will enjoy the trip. If you're looking for a place for adults or older kids that don't need as many different activities to keep them occupied, then I'd recommend going somewhere with better food and better service instead, although it would still be possible to enjoy yourself if you don't mind mediocre food and service and a lot of kids around. Also there is no room service here and the only food available after the restaurants closed is the mini buffet of chips, nachos, hotdogs, and packaged food at the sports bar. We ate it once and decided we'd rather be hungry late at night. We didn't get sick, but we didn't eat it all either. I'm not sure how nachos and cheese can be bad after a long day of drinking, but they didn't impress us. If you're going to this resort, pack your sunscreen and insect repellent because the area is very remote without anywhere close to pick up things you may have forgotten, and the gift shop prices definitely reflect the supply and demand. A little better service (it wasn't bad, just not legendary), and better alcohol would bump this resort from very good to excellent in my rating. They're on the right track and have a great set up to make it one of the best places I've ever been, it's just not quite there at the moment. Adding room service, and additional training for bartenders and restaurant waiters (with some exceptions) would be the only changes I'd need to make this the only place I go in the future, but for my next trip, they'll need to be offering a good deal to get me to come back, especially if I'm leaving the kids at home.

Here at the minute and it’s amazing!

Been at this hotel for two days as a party of 9 including a toddler, and I felt I needed to write a review after seeing not so good ones been posted just before we came out... I know how this can put you off a trip! The hotel and grounds are absolutely amazing, completely spotless and well looked after ! So many genuinely happy, hard working staff, making you feel welcome. The hotel is a good size, it seems very quiet at the moment, the rooms are lovely and the optics and full fridge is a bonus! Fantastic food and drink! What more could you ask for? :)

We book through carlos and Edwin at the beach. There were amazing. I would book on the beach better then sunwing. Carlos contact us to make sure we got on the bus and texts us the night before to tell us the time. Defentily will be back next year Our hotel was very clean, always sweeping and mopping. Our hotels room we're always perfect and we got a fresh stock of refreshments including beer every day in the fridge. We booked through sunwing and the plane was very tight. And they lied to us saying that are trips were all inclusive at the hotel. We had more travelling time then activy. We talked to sunwing hotel and they did nothing. This is the best vacation I have been on granted I been only on 3. But this hotel in my opinion is top notch VERY CLEAN they are even sweeping the top of the colums. The food is very good the steak house was AMAZING! Very polite and friendly service from the bartenders to the chefs and all service people. Almost all the people know more then 2 languages some people even have PERFECT english. Thank you and we will be returning!

We were there for a family vacation . my adult children and one grand child.

My grand daughter loved the water slides. The service was good but they seemed to be short of staff. I think that probably because Riu opened a new hotel complex right next door, they were probably training staff at both Riu establishments. The food was great at the buffet, the steak house was just ok. The asian restaurant had a few wecomed surprises (Indian food) not just the chinese and sushi plates that we expected. The twin beds are narrow, smaller that what we are used to in canadian or american hotel rooms.
