Sunscape to the Rescue

I took a solo trip to Punta Cana after my travel partner's flight got cancelled due to Hurricane Irma. Since I was solo, I decided to stay in an Airbnb. Big mistake! The Airbnb didn't live up to expectations. Just down the street from the Airbnbn apartment was the Sunscape Bavaro Beach Resort. I immediately booked a room, sight unseen! For the price, the resort was very good. It is a typical all-inclusive Caribbean beach resort with decent drinks and food, a great pool, and clean guest rooms. The biggest compliment to the resort is the staff. They were extraordinary! From the bell men, to the front desk personnel, to the restaurant servers to the bartenders. Everyone worked hard at serving their guests. The entertainment staff was fun, friendly and always ready to party. My new friend, Lembat, of the entertainment team befriended me as if I were his brother! Based on the service alone, I'd gladly return to the Sunscape!

Watch out for a downgrade!

I booked this hotel for a single night as I was in Punta Cana in passing. While looking at the room options on the hotel’s site I settled for the SUN CLUB king room with Jacuzzi. Since I needed internet access and a quiet area it was the logical choice. I arrived a little after 10pm tired and sleepy as heck and got to the front desk. First thing that ticked me off was one of the receptionists asking me: “Do you know the rate of the room you booked” (I’m my mind I’m like nooo, I just clicked without even checking if it was 100 or 1000 dollars per night!) However I kept my cool and answered with the price of the room. He tells me that I earned an upgrade from my garden view to ocean view. Cool. I wasn’t planning to stay much at the room tomorrow but nice. He hands me a white room key with no markings and sends me off… on my own. Lucky me I found another employee mid-way that helped me haul my luggage to the far-most building thru cobblestone pathways. I got to the room and I was a little miff that it didn’t looked like in the hotel site’s pictures but I had my king bed and the Jacuzzi so I brushed the different décor off. Next morning I got up and realize that I got no Ocean View room. It was a garden view. Very close to the beach yes, but no ocean view. I figure that all were taken and went out to have breakfast. The food had variety and the staff was attentive and gracious. The tables were promptly cleaned and the coffee was served regularly. That’s one of the saving graces of this hotel for me, the restaurant and ground staff. The food is great for what it is, a buffet. I guess that the options in the restaurants were even better. I go back to my room and NO INTERNET despite that one of the reasons I booked a SUN CLUB ROOM was the free wifi. Wifi I sorely needed because room #12210 kills the cell phone signal even for calls for some reason. I had to go out to the balcony to make a simple phone call. I call the front desk and I’m told by whoever picked the call that I had no internet service included because my initial reservation did not qualified for free wifi. The hell? I told this person that I booked a SUN CLUB room to which he responded that I had to go all the way to the front desk with the reservation to –and I quote- “see if it is true that what you are saying is the truth” I had to wait a few minutes to calm myself down less I arrive looking like murder. Not for the benefit of your staff Sunscape, but because I did not want to be seem as hostile while demanding a service I definitely paid for. So I get to the front desk and show them my reservation on my mobile phone to which they proceed to ask me to log in on the reception computers to print it. Indeed the night staff believed that the room I booked was the Deluxe tropical view to which they “graciously upgraded me” to the one I actually paid for. The Sun Club did not disappoint. It had AC, confortable furniture and great finger food to pass the time. I got all my errands done in this little haven. The pool for Sun Club only was quiet and peaceful. Note: don't book #12210 if you're going to spend time in the room at midday. There's some sort of business next door that plays loud music that can be heard even with the balcony door closed. Overall the issue with the front desk messing up my room and my amenities almost eclipsed all the good things this resort had going on. Please tell your staff to pay more attention to the reservations and not to outright doubt the guest when they are telling you something!

Having read many of the reviews there was a little nervousness about coming here. The hotel, staff and animation team were very good and anything raised was sorted straight away. On the days around Hurricane Irma communication about the evacuation could have been a little better but the actions taken were professional and considered. The hotel is large and would recommend trying to stay in the "newer part of the hotel" rooms are nice and spacious, the main pool is large with lots of activities with a swim up bar with some very good service. We found a "quiet pool" and if you do like peace and quiet this is the pool area for you, on one of the days there was less than 20 people around the pool. Food is a good mixture we mostly used the buffet and welcomed not having to book if you used one of the restaurants. Be prepared for hand sanitiser everywhere where there is food. Yes expect the check in staff to get you to buy a VIP upgrade but you only have to say no, similarly to the concierge, at no time were we approached by timeshare. The "official traders" on the site most days gave the usual hassle but if you said no thank you that was fine. Room housekeeping was a little hit and miss and think the hotel needs to set up some standard templates / processes, how many towels and hand towels we would get each day was quite random as was the usual bathroom bits and pieces. The staff at the bar in the reception area were very good and in the evening the waitresses even delivered your next drink without us even asking a fantastic bit of service. Would I go back probably but not with the same tour operator. In some trying circumstances with the Hurricane overall the hotel did well.

This was a nice resort, although it was a family resort and I was not with family !! The rooms were big and spacious but they do try to upgrade you. Everyone we spoke to paid a different amount, when upgrading. I did feel there were lots of good entertainment, I enjoyed that side of the resort. The grounds were really pretty with lots of tropical plants, very nice. The negative was the beach was eroded really bad and they had a huge sand bag of sort to try and save the beach. Not very pretty !! Next was the food, the main buffet was not the best except for breakfast. There was a buffet closest to the beach that served much better food. This is definitely a resort for family, but I feel its a little over priced !!

We booked our family vacation of 9 people to Sunscape and we made the most of it as we wanted a positive experience. The beach was not the greatest so we spent a lot of time at the pool. Food was average, very repetitive. The grounds were well kept & lovely. We found the entertainment to be less than average, more like high school shows put together. The entertainment staff were fine but again when you're there for a week you want to be original, it was the same sayings, same music day in day out. I did not experience this at other resorts. Also just a note to staff, don't act all nice in front of someone's face, then talk nonsense or make fun of them when they walk away. You have other customers present and paying attention, lack of class. Rooms were nice and kept clean daily. Don't waste your time with the lobby people offering you a VIP gift, it's a waste of time as they are selling time shares. My nephew got an allergic reaction and had to go the local hospital and my son was really sick luckily only for one day. All in all we had a good time as a family but I don't think I would go back.
