TripAdvisor Traveller Reviews
Secrets Playa Mujeres is an adults only resort. A small group of friends chose this resort to celebrate my husband's milestone birthday. Great choice! The resort is immaculate and beautiful. Staff friendly and accommodating. Rooms spacious and luxurious. People saying the food was not good are way off base. The food was very good. The Italian restaurant was very good. Two nights we went next door to Dreams for dinner. Gaucho Grill (Brazilian Steakhouse) was excellent and Fusion (Japanese) was also excellent. There is an ice cream shop on the Dreams side as well that we went to. A nice after dinner treat. Dreams is the family resort and 3-4x bigger than Secrets, both resorts are beautiful. Secrets was spread out. In order to get from the rooms/pool area to the lobby, gourmet restaurants and after dinner activities you had to take a golf cart shuttle. They ran 24/7 and we never had to wait more than a couple minutes for one. The one complaint was the dress code for men. The weather was very hot and humid and the men had to wear long pants at the gourmet restaurants (5 out of 9) I felt like we were "shunned" the first night at dinner at El Patio because the men in our group had golf shorts on. Nice shorts, no flip flops, golf shirts. Yet they would seat men in doors with ripped jeans and women with slits in dresses that were so high you could see their cheeks and wearing trucker hats. I don't understand how that is appropriate dinner wear but gentlemen wearing traditional golf wear are shunned to only outdoor seating. One would think resort wear would be appropriate. My husband also was asked to change his shirt one morning at breakfast because he was wearing a sleeveless shirt (not a tank top). I understand they want to keep a certain decorum but the long pants went to the extreme. One other night (Sunday) was a Mexican night. They had mariachi band and a mayan dance group. It would have been nicer had there been a narrator for the mayan group. They were obviously telling a story but we didn't understand what was going on. It was very entertaining none-the-less. They also had vendors selling jewelry and other things. They were very aggressive but willing to negotiate (still expensive though).
We also did a day trip to Isla Mujeres. They try to upsell you the minute you arrive. We waiting a couple days and found another trip. We paid $89 and received snorkeling, lunch, drinks on the boat, swimming at the north shore of the island and shopping. Well worth it. I've paid over $100 in the Caribbean for similar trips. When you arrive in Cancun after getting through immigration and customs, pass all the people in blue button shirts. They are trying to sell you excursions.
A special shout out to Luis in the entertainment group. Aside from Sophie, he was one of the hardest working people and very personable (they all work hard and long hours by the way). He loves his job and his team mates and it shows. Levi with the wait staff was very attentive and remembered our drinks. He was always right there when you were empty. We would definitely go back to either this resort or to another hotel in the AM Resorts family.
Amazing service, as you would expect from any Secrets resort. Beautiful accommodations, as you would expect from any Secrets resort. The food was top-notch.
The only complaint(s) I have about Playa Mujeres is(are) that you have to ride a golf cart from the 'hotel' portion of it, to the portion where anything else is happening -shopping, poker night, etc. That was a minor inconvenience, since those carts were running once every two or three minutes, 24 hours a day (and it was like a five minute walk anyway). That was a very minor annoyance.
The only reason I am docking one star is that it is at least a half hour bus ride from -literally anything- in any town. The advertising suggests that you are right in the heart of the action. Nope. You are a half an hour outside of the action. It is still an amazing resort, with all the amenities you are accustomed to from a Secrets resort, you just have to ride a really scary bus to do anything other than get drunk and enjoy the food.
Relaxing and luxurious
After being greeted with champagne and a “Welcome home” greeting, we knew we would be in for a treat. This resort is truly luxurious.
Room: The room is equipped with everything you need to have a wonderful vacation. Sheets and bed are extremely comfortable. 2 robes are provided and there is always a plentiful amount of towels. Amenities include a sewing kit, large shampoo, body wash and body lotion, hair dryer, and a scale. I would recommend bringing conditioner because the water can be quite rough on hair, especially for females. We reserved a partial ocean view room, but honestly it felt more like a normal ocean view room. I can’t even imagine what a regular ocean view looks like if what we had was partial (see attached pictures.) There is a safe box, laundry bag, hangers, shoe shining and extra pillow/blanket in the closet. There is also a fully stocked mini fridge and somebody comes around every day to make sure it’s stocked for you. The coffee machine is a nespresso machine that only makes espressos, so if you don’t like those then I recommend ordering coffee from the coffee shop on the resort. All in all the room is fantastic.
Housekeeping: Comes once in the morning between 10ish and 1:00? Depending on where your room is. They were very thorough with cleaning. They also provide a turn down service usually between 6:30 and 9:00pm? This was SO nice! They basically clean the room once again, removing dirty towels and getting you ready for bed. They provide little chocolates, get the bed ready and make the room cozy to sleep in. I loved coming in to the room at night and seeing it clean. We made sure to tip the housekeepers for being so thorough.
Breakfast: Not many options for breakfast. We ate at the Market Cafe @ Secrets for most of our time there. They had an omelet making station, cereals, yogurts, cold cuts, cheese, different varieties of eggs, waffles, pancakes, different fruit, veggies, and bakery items. They also had different daily specialties like potatoes and meats, etc. We ordered room service one day and the food was okay. The Coco Cafe, which is a bakery and coffee shop, had food for on the go. The best breakfast we had was at the World Cafe at the Dreams Resort next door. They had everything the Market Cafe had but more! I enjoyed their selection a lot better. This place gets crowded in the morning with a lot of kids, so that is the only thing that I didn’t like.
Lunch: You can order food from the pool with your poolside server. It comes from the Barefoot Grill and includes hamburgers, nachos, chicken tenders, etc. Its solid food if you don’t feel like leaving your chair for lunch. Market Cafe also had a good selection for lunch, including a “hibachi” style section, various meats and salad bar. The World Cafe @ Dreams is even better for lunch, with more variety.
Portofino - Delicious and elegant. Wine was really good.
Gaucho @ Dreams - Probably our favorite meal. All you can eat meats cut at your table side. Doesn’t compare to Texas De Brazil or Fogo De Chao in the states, but the food was good. The salad bar and appetizers were the best part of this restaurant.
Himitsu - We came here originally for dinner and loved it so much. We realized that they had hibachi as well and so we made reservations the next day and came back for hibachi. It was entertaining and delicious.
Fusion @ Dreams - SO GOOD! The sushi was amazing.
Market Cafe - They had a “barbecue style” buffet set up outside for dinner one night so we decided to check it out. The meat was decadent and delicious. The dinner was followed by a fire show which was fun to watch.
Entertainment: The entertainment team at the Secrets are a joy to be around. Kristian and Sofia were so wonderful and fun. There were plenty of activities throughout the day. Mornings included water aerobics and yoga- they had cooking classes including sushi, other activities like corn hole, ping pong, darts, bingo, and fun pool activities. Volleyball in the afternoon both in the pool and on the beach. Night entertainment included a night club on the resort called Desires. It was fun coming here. They had great music, drinks and billiards.
The entertainment while we were there included a Mexican night with Mayan performers, a fire show, comedy night, karaoke, silent disco (this was so much fun), casino night, and circus show. There was always something going and we really enjoyed it.
Poolside: Reserving chairs was an okay experience. There is usually someone available in the mornings to help you find a spot and reserve it with towels. You have to go pretty early (in between 7-9) if you want a good spot. Make sure you leave something on your chair to indicate you’re still using it, or people will just steal your chair. Floats are hard to come by unless you arrive early in the morning. Some people just hold onto floats all day, even though they are for everyone to use. I recommend buying a cheap float and bringing it to the resort and leaving it at the end of your trip.
You get a poolside server who can bring you drinks and food (after 12:30). Our server, Levi, was incredible. He was so nice and accommodating and always made sure we had what we needed. He was serving us for the majority of our time there and truly made our stay wonderful.
Beach: Too much seaweed to swim in it. We didn’t use the beach.
Bars: Jose at the swim up bar was awesome! He kept our drinks full and always surprised us with something new. Alcohol was good, make sure you ask for top shelf. The best drinks we had were at the Himitsu restaurant.
Overall: this was so relaxing and luxurious. I would 100% recommend coming back here. Don’t come here if you’re expecting a crazy party. It’s more to relax and enjoy a well needed vacation. The best part of this resort was having access to the Dreams next door, which allowed us to visit more bars, restaurants and have more pool access.
Love Secrets Playa Mujeres!!
You can't go wrong with a stay at Secrets Playa Mujeres. Fun, beautiful resort. Pool activites and staff were awesome.. Food excellent, beach bar excellent, beach staff again....excellent! I love this resort :)
This was not our chosen Honeymoon destination. We were booked in to the Beloved Hotel which is a boutique Hotel with approximately 100 rooms. A fantastic destination for a romantic break. Unfortunately we only managed one night there, before a fire in the plant room meant the Hotel had to shut.
We spent one night in Cancun before ending up at the Secrets resort. First impressions were Wow, a huge sprawling reception which is remote from the Hotel. Once checked in we were transported to the Hotel via golf buggies. And shown to our room, which was more than adequate with a spa bath, shower, mini bar. The most comfortable bed I’ve slept in, and to top it all spotlessly clean.
This Hotel was considerably bigger than what we would have chosen for a honeymoon, However we had to make the best of a bad situation.
First stop was the beach, the beach was spotlessly clean, however there seems to be an issue with seaweed, which is constantly being cleared by staff.
The concierges on the beach were fantastic, especially Alex, Derby and Laura. Who were constantly checking on our drinks situation, So much for trying to be good and only drinking of a night.
The choice of restaurants for Dinner is fantastic, and includes an Italian, Asian, Seafood, Mexican and steakhouse. You can also use the restaurants next door in dreams hotel. Our favourite was the Asian restaurant where you can book to have a cooking show.
For breakfast and lunch we ate at the Market Cafe. And were greeted each day by Anabelly s smiling face, as she attempted to remember our surname and room number. Which she eventually did.
Once inside we were greeted by the gentle giant Eric. What a man. And his team Enrique and Cruz, every morning our coffee was poured without asking. In fact they knew my needs better than my new wife.
Alfredo the chef on the hot plate was a genius, wether it be breakfast omelettes. Or a seafood stir fry. For lunch he nailed it every time.
Around the pool the animation team worked tirelessly all day every day. Ivan, Ross, Christian, Damian and Carlos. Did there best to make everyone feel included in the fun and games. At times the pool was like party central. And that’s when we retired to the beach. Or to the coffee shop where Eugina would treat me to one of her specialties.
One other member of staff I feel I must mention was Shirley the semelia, often she would help us with our choice of restaurant and would often escort us.
As you can probably gather from reading this review, the staff absolutely made our holiday. They treated us like family, and although this wasn’t our choice of Honeymoon location, we wouldn’t have changed it.
