Wonderful week in paradise

Just got home from a week at Grand Palladium Kantenah during which we had our wedding. There are a lot of wonderful things about this resort and overall we loved it and had a really great time. The resort is set in a mangrove forest and it is really stunning. At the Kantenah side, little paths take you through the forest and there is no shortage of wildlife every where you go, from tons of cats and kittens in the jungle to the agoutis and coatis, birds, flamingos, iguanas and lizards, a multitude of colourful fish in the coral reef right off the beach, stingrays, sea turtles, and the parrots and crocodiles they have in captivity there. We did a lot of walking as it is a big resort but they have shuttles going around all the time if you want a ride. The wildlife was a major highlight for us, and a good reason to go back. The beach is absolutely stunning, I am not sure what people who dont like the beach are coming from, it is gorgeous. There are multiple large shallow torquoise water areas for swimming, and then tons of coral reef to snorkel in and explore right of the beach. We saw so many fish, sea turtles and stingrays and loved it. Some days the water was a bit choppier due to faster winds, other days it was so calm and lovely and we spent entire days hanging out in the shallow water. There are a few rocks but really hardly any and no seaweed except for one day there was a little. The beach is also huge so if one section is not to your liking just walk down it a bit and find a better section. The Kantenah end had great swimming and always a ton of sun chairs available with natural palm tree shade, the colonial section was busier and the white sands end was a bit stinky from old sea weed from the summer months that they dumped at that end so we always hung out at the Kantenah end. The pools are extensive, we didnt even see all of them. The main pool is huge and has lots of activiity during the day, there are quieter small pools if you want more quiet. We are beach people so didnt spend any time at the pools. The food was better than other all inclusives we have been to in the past but not 5 star obviously, The main buffets served breakfast and had pretty much everything you could need including make your own mimosa and cesear stations. For lunch we went to the pool buffet which had a smaller selection but decent choices, or we ordered made to order food from the beach bar which was our favoirte daytime eating spot as they have more mexican choices like quesidillas and fajitas, For the restaurants we, tired the ribs restaurant, the steak house, the thai restaurant, the tepennyaki restaurant, the brazilian restaurant, the buffet the first night, a private dinner on our wedding night, and the chic cabaret 7 course dinner. Our favorites were the steak house, thai restaurant, and tepennyaki. The restautnat food was decent over all and there are more restaurants we didnt try as well. The reservation system was a little weird, you dont need a reservation apparently but most nights we made them due to having a big group. Not sure if we got special treatment for that since we were a wedding group. One night we went without a reservation and had to wait 20 min and then got in. About the chic show, it was fabulous and highly recommend it. We didnt love the food but the show made it worth the $100 charge to go (for non TRS people). Because myself and my husband were the bride and groom we got to go for free which was awesome. The rooms were very nce, we had a romance villa suite which had an outdoor shower, bidet, large bathroom with big tub and double sinks, king size bed and hammock on a large balcony. Cleaning services and restocking was good for us although we heard other people had issues. We left tips most days. Drinks were good although a little sweet for my tastes, not super strong which is probably better when youre drinking throughout the day. Some higher end liquors available. We also had some fun at the sports centre where they have tons of sports you can play including shuffle board and mini golf. We had a massage at the spa which was very nice. The few downsides we found to the trip were that the service was not as friendly or helpful as other resorts we been too, it was still good but just not great compared to our other experiences. Things were also different compared to who you talked to, for instance one reception person told us we had access to the TRS side and the chic show for free since we had gold wrist bands, the next day another guy said our gold wrist bands just meant we were the bride and groom and gave us non of those perks. Check in was a bit confusing with a bunch of groups with the same last name since our family was all staying there. Restaurant service was over all very good. Knowing more spanish would definitely have helped as a lot of the employees dont know a lot of english. One other downside was that there is no disco so not a lot to do late at night if you are not interested in the shows. However they did have some activites going on in the colonial lobby and apparently there are some beach parties on some days but we never knew what days or where they were. Our actual wedding was really fun, we did have some disappointments with the food and difficulties in the long distance planning process, and it rained that day but over all had so much fun with our family and firends it didnt really matter. We would definilty go back to this resort and have heard the TRS section is really nice and has amazing service so will maybe try that out next time.

- Food was not good. Not even in the specialty restaurants. - The buffet style dining halls were not well managed. There was always an unnecessary line to get seated even though tables were open. - We called concierge to have items sent to our room, like toothpaste, bedding. we either didn't get it or it came a day or two later. - Checking in was a disaster. We booked and paid through booking.com. The hotel did not see us as having paid for the accommodations. They said they would call booking.com on the following Monday but if they couldn't sort it out we would need to pay again. They insisted on taking a carbon copy of a credit card AND they insisted that we sign it. Absolutely ridiculous. They also gave us the wrong room. We had booked a junior suite with two beds and couch pullout. They have us one with one bed.

If you want top notch service you won’t be disappointed. We had the best food choices , great entertainment. Live music at pool area, cooking classes, tecila tasting , The best New Years party night. Ice sculpture ,best food choices (lobsters,steak..) chocolate sculptures. The beach is not more swimming lots of rocks and sign to watch for sting rays but everything else will make up for that . Diana for expédia local expert at the hotel was amazing , Chef Valeria was outstanding and hector the waiter was very good. Also Diana form the entertainment was very good as well in general great staff !

We booked a 6 day stay in the Romance Villa on the Kantenah side of the resort. Upon our arrival, the receptionist had let us know that we received a complimentary upgrade to TRS into a Junior Suite. As we had done our research on the Romance Villa and paid the price to upgrade we weren’t interested in transferring to TRS as it was very secluded and far from everything and the Junior Suite was a step down from our Romance Villa. I told the receptionist that we wanted to stay with our original room and she became pushy which was a red flag for us. I refused again and she got irritated and had to bring her coworker over that was less than pleased that they had to redo our room paperwork as they had been so sure we would say yes to the “upgrade.” The hotel itself and other wait staff were pretty good but there were a lot of little things that really gave us a bad impression: 1. We were unable to get into our room when we first arrived and it was down pouring outside. A maintenance tech had to come by to swap out the key card reader. Because of the heavy rain, the power in our unit was also out. This wasn’t terrible as it was still light out but it was extremely hot and the cleaners had left the mini fridge open so we were unable to get a cold drink or go anywhere due to the rain. The ice machine near our villa was broken as well and was never repaired after I called about it. We walked near some other rooms to find a different machine but that was also broken. 2. Our minifridge was not refilled consistently. We only had one bottle of water the first day we checked in so by the next day we had nothing left. I called several times and the receptionist stated that someone would be over in 10 minutes. We left and went to the beach and came back several hours later. The minifridge was STILL not refilled. I called back very upset as we had NOTHING to drink and it’s not safe to drink the tap water. I called again the the receptionist acted like she knew nothing about it but said that someone would be over within 10 minutes and if not, she would give me a call back. No one came again and no one called after 30 minutes so my husband and I had to physically walk over to the reception desk to demand that we had things to drink in our room. The receptionist looked very annoyed and said that her colleague had just left to go do it. It seems like there was a constant lack of communication. 3. Our room had was very musty and smelled moldy. We understood that we were in a jungle and that it was very humid so we didn’t complain. However, you’d think they would invest in a dehumidifier for the room. I started having breathing problems after sleeping at night, but as soon as I would get fresh air away from my room, I would feel better. 4. Certain items in our room were broken and needed to be tightened or replaced. We were able to get our shower bar reinstalled but after seeing their handiwork (the bar was wobbly and usable) we were fed up with calling/requesting repairs for anything else we found. 5. The food was average and forgettable. The room service was better than most of the food we had but even that is lacking. We had better food on our excursions than at the resort. The pools were nice and so were each of the bars. But I wouldn’t choose this resort again.
