We chose the Grand Sunset Princess and upgraded to the Platinum Suite package. It was the best decision we could have made. We chose the Grand Sunset Princess and upgraded to the Platinum Suite package. It was the best decision we could have made. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left, we were amazed at the superior level of service we received. The beautiful room/suite was meticulously cleaned on a daily basis, as was the rest of the resort. Everything was so well maintained, including the pools, pool bars, and beaches. The resort was very large, however, my boyfriend and I are very active people and loved walking around to different areas of the resort. We both have agreed that we need to bring our friends and family back next time around!!

Everything was wonderful. We would highly suggest the Perks Plus upgrade. Prefered checkin, more legroom on the plane, drinks and snacks helped to take the hassle out of vacation. The most exclusive beach area of this resort is reserved for the mexican vendors and beach massage personnel. The most exclusive beach area of this resort is reserved for the mexican vendors and beach massage personnel. Local female vendors constantly walking with their children strapped to them, breast feeding and selling bracelets at the same time. You are kept behind ropes and not allowed to move chairs outside of the roped area. The vendors could be moved further back from the front of the beach. You will be asked 10 times a day to get a massage, and then the hotel spa personnel compete with the beach people to get massage business. Hotel must be getting a cut of all this action to allow such a use of this prime real estate.

My parents, grandma, and cousin stayed a week and a half before our trip in a Jr delux room. We decided to upgrade to the platinum suite. All in all when we got back and put together all our likes and dislikes I decided I would not chose to do the platinum package again. The extra few goodies did not outweigh the cost. For the resort, it very large but loved acre of it and every acre was spotless. The beach was absolutely perfect other than water depth was less than 3ft deep so couldn't really enjoy swimming. The food was generally pretty good,at least the main courses. The appetizers and salads were terrible at all of them. The Riviera and Sunset buffets were OK but the lunch buffet at the fondu restaurant was far better food. Bed's and pillows were extremely Hard so needless to say sleep was hard to come by. Last of all, if u do go platinum on the sunset side make sure to deal with Paco the concier. He went head over heels all week for us literally. The other two were completely rude!

I asked that our 3 suites not be located on the first floor, which they were. We requested 3 rooms with King beds. However, one room had 2 double beds. After much agravation, the double bedroom was changed to a king and on the 2nd floor. The shower stall leaked in all 3 rooms which clearly is a chronic problem. The water leaked out all over the bathroom floor which was dangerous. I really disliked their A La Carte situation. I hate the inconvenience of running to the lobby daily to secure another reservation which was not easy to get in the first place. When we arrived to dinner each time, the restaurants were never full so why were the reservations so limited? I thought the resort was beautiful and huge, but I didn't mind the walk myself but it really is not for everyone I am sure. Linda Nugent

There is a large emphasis on tipping for everything at this resort. I have been to all inclusives where tipping is discouraged and/or not allowed at this place you have to tip to get any service at all. Bring 150 one dollar bills with you if you want service

I would definitly go back to this resort. It is absoutely beautiful, staff very friendly & helpful. Our room did smell a little musty but did not make it uncomfortable. I traveled to grand sunset from april 25th until may 2nd with a group of 17 friends and family. We've all been to several resorts in cuba and mexico and we're experienced travellers and not at all picky people. First of all the resort is really big, it's a pretty long walk to get anywhere but if you're able bodied it shouldn't really be an issue. My grandmother didn't even have any issues. The resort is absolutely beautiful, the grounds are very well kept. There are several pools but for us, the younger adults in the group (ages 18-22) we found the "party pool" to be the best one. However the bar is crowded and it takes forever to get served. One thing I found particularly dissapointing was that our room kept having issues. The toilet would only flush half of the time, there were a million musquitos, our safe broke, and a fuse blew. These issues were annoying but when we called the front desk somebody came within minutes. Aside from the issues the rooms (junior deluxe) were very nice, modern, clean rooms. We went to the japanese A la carte and the steakhouse. Both were fantastic and we had a great time at both. The buffets weren't all that great. You can always find something to eat but compared to other mexican resorts the food was just okay, was never hot and the service at the buffets just wasn't that great. At lunch time I would be finished my meal before my water glass got filled. The beach is beautiful, I read lots of complaints about the vendors but I actually enjoyed walking around and looking at everything when the beach got boring. I would like to thank the first aid people. Unfortunately I don't remember any of their names but I injured my foot on a beach chair the 2nd day of our trip. I was given medical help immediately and was stuck wearing a wrap on my foot for the rest of the trip. It needed to be changed daily form getting wet and such and they were extremely caring and re-evaluated my injury daily and gave me advice on how to handle it until I was home and could get it looked at by my doctor. They were extremely comforting. Overall it was a great trip and myself and my family/friends really liked the resort. I'd probably return if the price was right.

Spent a week at the Grand Sunset Princess April 14-21. The Grand Sunset and the Grand Riviera are essentially mirror images of each other and together form one very large resort. We were originally booked into the Sunset but were assigned a room on the Riviera side. There essentially is no difference between the Sunset & the Riviera sides for the Junior or Junior Deluxe rooms. Restaurants and amenities are shared between the two resorts. As noted many times in other reviews, this resort is VERY big. That being said, I urge you to invest in comfortable shoes/sandals for walking. The grounds are beautiful to walk through, but you really need something for your feet that won?t give you blisters and ruin your vacation. You will probably underestimate how many times you will need to make the trek from one end of the resort to the other. The combination of a lot of walking and the hard marble floors are harder on your feet than most people realize. The resort was close to capacity when we were there but it never felt crowded during the day. Could get crowded at night in the courtyard area where most of the restaurants and buffets are located. Lots of bars open during the day, most of the night activity was centered in the lobby areas. Maintenance on the grounds was continuous. There were staff pruning and mowing the grounds all day and washing the walkways in the evenings. All public areas were kept spotless at all times. We found that the buffets offered a good variety of food to appeal to everyone. Each night has a different theme and the main dishes change to reflect that. The breakfast was very good, omelettes made fresh on the grill with the ingredients of your choosing. Hot offerings usually included scrambled eggs, ham, French toast, etc. Always a variety of fruit, breads, jams, etc. Lunch had the usual offerings of burgers, fries, etc. Could easily create your own sandwich by going around the buffet and choosing a variety of things from the different stations. On the beach, they offer a BBQ area where you can get burgers, hot dogs, guacamole and chips, etc. Reviews on the food seem to be varied but you have to realize that this resort has a wide variety of age groups on site and has to offer food that appeals to children as well as adults so some of the items may seem out of place to adults travelling without children. The a la carte reservation system goes like this: the desk is located behind the sunset lobby bar, right beside the sunwing office. Not easy to find & not visible. They are open from 8 to 8 every day. As soon as you have a room number, you can go see what times/restaurants are still available. They only book up to 3 days ahead. At 2pm, they add the next day so for instance if you go in at noon on a Monday, they would have reservation sheets for Monday (the current day), Tuesday & Wednesday. If you go back on Monday at 2, they will have the Thursday reservations available as well. When they add the new day, there tends to be a line up so it is a good idea to get there around 1:45 & get in line. We tried La Fleur (International Gourmet), Mama Mia (Italian) and La Fondue (Swiss) a la cartes. To our surprise, the International Gourmet was our favourite. Beautiful restaurant, a menu that offered something different and awesome service. The Swiss was very good, not much atmosphere as it is located in space used for a breakfast & lunch buffet during the day. Although the Italian was very nice, it didn?t really offer anything unique. Keep in mind that Thursday night is Mexican night where the courtyard is set up with the vendors market, Mexican flags decorate the area, Mexican themed show there, Mariachi band in the centre court and the buffets offer a Mexican theme. If you want to take all that in, this is not a good night to book an a la carte. If you want to avoid the whole thing, good night to book Las Olas or La Fondue as they are located down near the platinum area in the space that is used as the sunset buffet during breakfast & lunch. The beach is beautiful and very long. When you walk on to the beach area for the first time, the area in front of you looks very crowded with the vendor huts and the massage areas. If you are not travelling with children, the best place to go is in the adult only area. This is located left of the vendor huts, just past the wedding pavilion. This area has its own bar and there are usually chairs available at any time of the day. The best spot for swimming or enjoying the water is definitely in front of the vendors huts. Other areas have very large rocks and seaweed, etc that make walking in the water very difficult. The water is beautiful and as you walk in you may be surrounded by schools of Angel fish. Very shallow for a long way out, usually lots of waves to play in but watch the ocean floor for dark areas as those indicate rocks. My only complaint was that there were no washrooms located on the beach. The closest ones were at the entrance to the beach area. The pools were also beautiful but it was very difficult to get loungers around the pools unless you claimed them early. Entertainment in the evenings was very good. There is often a band playing in the courtyard during the early part of the evening. Around 9 or 9:30, they offer a show in the theatre, different theme every night. Very well done, very talented singers & dancers. Went downtown Playa Del Carmen for an afternoon. Definitely worth the trip if you want to get some mementos to take home. If you want to use the free shuttle offered by the resort, you have to book it at least the day before. The main shopping area is 5th avenue and has a wide variety of stores and restaurants. Great deals on tshirts, jewellery, trinkets, etc as long as you take the time to convert the price they quote to your currency and then make a deal to come to the price you are willing to pay. They tend to quote everything in US or pesos. The first price they quote is always in US but they will give you a better deal if you are paying in pesos. A great restaurant in the area is the Fusion Bar & Restaurant located on 6th street. Fusion is right on the beach and offers some authentic local food, great drinks and live music. When you are ready to head back to the resort, there is no shortage of taxis available. Negotiate your price before you get in the car. Word of caution on leaving your valuables unguarded especially on the day you are leaving. Although this did not happen to us, it seems that it is best to pack up everything and check out in the morning before you do anything else for the day. Your bags can be locked in a room in the main lobby and you can keep your valuables such as passports and tickets with you. You can continue to use the resort facilities for the day and there is a room off the main lobby area to have a shower and get changed before you leave. Most instances of things being stolen seemed to happen on this transitional day when things are still in your room but you have not checked out yet. This is a wonderful resort, very glad we chose to spend our vacation here and will definitely be back.

We as a group of 29 traveled from calgary to cancun on April 17-May 1. The group package was bull. They told us 20% discount at the spa, the spa wouldn't do more than 15%. On the flight down there it was a mess we were told there was a place to put my wedding dress, true but it was just an over-head compartment jammed in with 5 other brides dresses. We were at the front of the plane and no one helped us get our dresses to get off the plane but some young boy sitting close to them. *Thanks sunwing* We were supposed to get free flights for the size of our group. Didn't know this until we were already there so it didnt happen either. As a bride I would say stay away, this place is huge, there is nothing special about your day. In the two weeks we were there probably close to 20 wedding. We were promised a cocktail patry (private) and dinner it was a fight, we got drinks off the bus, they said that was our cocktail party..and the dinner I gave up fighting for. Oh and the princess gift was a set of white towels. We got a free room upgrade because we were the bride and groom, and also one for the group package, only difference for our room and everyone elses was a jet tub they wouldnt honor the second upgrade. The honeymoon package for our second week was neat on the three days out of the week they remembered to do it. I could keep going on but I think you catch the drift. Brides be warned!

We travelled may 8 to the 15 with Sunwing. We stayed in the Yucatan platinum adults only section. Its was nice and quiet had our own pool and wait service there. Requested a king size bed a month before we arrived didn't get it. The beds king or double are the hardest most uncomfortable you will ever sleep in. If that doesn't bother you great if you want to wake up well rested and not sore maybe think twice. Our friends got to their room wasn't ready, went back 20 mind later housekeeping was finished but had no towels, no drinks in mini fridge, no alcohol no fruit basket and no a la carte dinner reservation slips either. Also they're air conditioning was barely below 23 the whole week called several times but was never fixed to a cool temp. Toilets when you flush hold down the handle we had problems and it overflowed and flooded the bathroom. Maintenance was there quick and cleaned up. Still hold the handle down or it won't flush right. The rooms are clean spacious no complaints other than toilet but its a slow flush toilet so... This resort is HUGE. 10 mins to the beach and lobby from yucatan section. Very under staffed for a resort of this size. The staff there are awesome and go out of they're way to help you. A la cartes we tried Miso japanese Teppanyaki, la fondue fondue restaurant and le fleur. Le fleur was the best. I don't think any are that great and liked the selection at the buffet better. Friday night Lobster tails on the buffet don't miss out. Its a good resort tons to do its just so large we didn't see half of it. For that reason i probably wouldn't return but i like to try a new resort every year so... Also beach is great bring water shoes tho its very rocky. The water is up to your waist which is great as you can swim out quite far. Sunwing vacations is the worst i have EVER experienced. Rude, ignorant no customer service from anyone. Almost like your a burden on them even though our hard earned money keeps them employed. The planes are old pieces of crap. Broken seat on way down no entertainment it was broken. Way home washroom in front didn't work. Just no customer service at all. I will travel with Westjet from now on. We paid 1200.00 per person tax included for adults section. For the money not bad. Its clean tons to do friendly staff. Too bad sunwing offers it.

Always something happening at the central pool and there are many other pools for those who wanna just relax! Beach is gorgeous, but stay near the middle because there are a lot if rocks in the water the more off to the side u are. I didn't eat the buffet food, except for breakfast, ate mostly at the sports bar and the a la carte restaurants. Also, if they still have it u gotta see the cooking show, great dinner and great entertainment. Overall this place is fabulous!!!! I would highly recommend it to anyone!
