The hotel was nice but needed updating. The food was okay but there seemed to be more "sick" people than usual. This was our sixth trip to Punta Cana and this is the sickest we had been. Overall we would give this vacation a fair.

The hotel is in much need The hotel is in need of update and repair. Lots of tiles missing in the pool! The maid service was very poor. didn't replace coffee, sugar and creamer. One day they even took one coffee cup and never replaced it. I have stayed at many Riu's and this was the poorest service I have ever received in my room.

My experience at the Riu Palace Punta Cana was overall extremely pleasant and exactly what I had in mind when booking the vacation. But, I had a very unfortunate encounter with the Amstar, who apparently was also in charge of Apple Vacations Representative. Following the directions on all my travel documents, I went to the lobby 24 hours before our check out to confirm our transportation to the airport early the following morning. I was very disappointed with the lack of professionalism and overall rudeness of the representative, Cesar Fernandez. He claimed that since we hadn't gone to the welcome reception back on our first full day, at 9:30 am, after flying internationally, and calling our room several times before 9 am, that he couldn't guarantee secured transportation to the airport. He was very rude and said if we wanted transportation to the airport, we would have to come down to the lobby the following morning at 8:30 am so he could then check if there was something he could do about our transportation. The airport transfer has already been paid for at this point so I tell him about this but he insisted that it was required that I come down to the welcome reception at the beginning of our vacation to secure airport transfer. We tried fixing this issue on the spot but he claimed he had to leave and was not returning that day. This was at about 11 am. Unfortunately, this encounter put a damper on my last day of vacation. Since he had left for the day, I spent a better part of the day trying to figure out another way to get me and my family to the airport the following day in order to make our flight. I decided to go back to the lobby and speak with the hotel staff who very graciously called Apple Vacations and confirmed our already standing transfer information set for 9:55 am. It was even disappointing to see how quickly they resolved the issue because that showed that the entire unpleasant encounter could have been avoided. I wish I would not have had to write so much about this singular unpleasant experience because the rest of the vacation was perfect! The staff were so friendly and attentive. The food was unbelievable. The pictures on the Apple Vacations website reflect very closely to what we saw when we got there. Absolutely beautiful that the pictures don't do it justice!

Beautiful Place, service spotty, food average

This place is beautiful, the buildings grounds and beach are spectacular. The food is okay, but repetitive, we were tired of most of it by the fourth day. The buffet staff were the best employees in the place, but the formal restaurant staff was hit and miss at best. The biggest single issue we had was with the Apple Vacations rep in the hotel, Cesar Fernandez. He told us when we had our first meeting with him that there was a free shuttle to downtown Punta Cana twice a day he could get us on if we wanted to go shopping. We signed up for a trip and instead of going to downtown Punta Cana he sent us to some cut-rate duty free shop with a cigar store attached. I didnít want to take four hours out of my vacation to go to a place I can hit in the airport on the way home. I donít know if he was getting a kickback from them for sending people, or if Apple signed off on this, but it was a bait and switch and fraud. He claimed that he never told us downtown Punta Cana, but both I and my wife heard him very clearly. Just beware on that.

Half of our group of 29 people got sick with stomach issues and diarrhea within 2 days after arrival. We linked it back to a common cause of food cleanliness. There was mold in some rooms. There were cockroaches in some rooms. Food selections at all restaurants were underwhelming.

Apple is just as at fault!

When using Apple, I always and have always made it very clear that I ONLY want ocean view rooms. Apple representative assured me all I would need to do is explain to the desk clerk that I requested an ocean view room. The desk clerk told me that for $35 more per day (between him and me) he would move me. That was not an option I would agree to. Therefore I received a room with a foul odor, overlooking an alley.

One of the worst experiences that I have overall.

I have traveled vastly in my life and appreciate good service and good hospitality. This resort was a mixed bag of each of the two. The room quality was very sub par. It smelled, had active mold growth, and bugs. The food was horrible, absolutely horrible. Most of our 30 person party suffered from serious stomach (diarrhea) issues, that didn't stop once we returned home. The service at the food and bar areas was great. Kudos to Sandy Santana in the buffet area. He is an extreme asset. The entertainment was soso. I would not return to this resort again. Our experience was horrible. It needs to many upgrades and improvements to list. The grounds and outside facades are beautiful. I would have preferred to sleep in a tent on the grounds.

Our recent stay at the Riu Plaza Punta Cana

We recently stayed at the Riu Plaza Punta Cana for a destination wedding. From day 1 the stay was akward, the check in process took forever and the clerk who helped us seemed very sketchy and rude. We didn't want to give him our credit card he was so odd. When we got to our room we were blasted with an over whelming smell of some kind of cleaner, followed by a very strong musty smell. I could go on and on but to keep this short I'll give a brief run down....Our room had mold throughout, we had roaches in our room I woke up to one on my back, drinks were ordered and never delivered or a totally different drink was returned, the pool had a layer of scum on it, the food was definitely sub par, shopping at the stores was crazy nothing had a price on it and we were aproached with different outrageous prices eventually to haggle down to something reasonable. We have been home for 4 days now and my wife and other members of our party have been sick with stomach issues, cramping and severe diarrhea. We will definitely not be returning and not recommending this destination to anyone.

The flights went smooth and ran ahead of schedule. The Riu was what I expected after reading the reviews. It is in need of repairs and updating. Check in took a while at the hotel but they did have mimosa sitting on the counter for you to grab. Hotel staff didn't tell us about them, another guest did. Our room was dirty and lights didn't work. I went to front desk and asked to be switched and it was done promptly. The next room was 3042 and better with a partial ocean view of sunrise in the morning. There was. The workers at the swim up bar were arguing amongst themselves when we tried to get our first drink at the resort. Finally they noticed us and we were served. Drinks were so so. You could drink all day and never felt a thing. As previous reviews, the wine was not even palatable for me as that Is what I drink. The workers work very hard to keep the place clean and the buffet and dining were well taken care of. The quality of food was good. I didn't get sick but my girls both had some nausea probably form the type and quantities we were eating. I also wished that the hotel staff would have informed me of the steak restaurant being closed on Sat due to a wedding. We would have tried it another night. Over all the beach was the best part. Also, the shuttle drivers were great and very helpful.

We visited this October for 2 weeks. Initial impressions were good with a beautiful and grand lobby area. Reception staff very helpful and welcoming. Welcome drinks on arrival too. We then went to our room, initial impressions of that were not great as they are old fashioned and run down. We have a few issues with the room so told reception and all rectified within the time we had dinner. once used to the room, they are clean and very comfy beds. The cleaning team were fantastic and provided new towels and room stock up (including mini fridge) twice daily if needed. Restaurants - Buffet is great breakfast, lunch and dinner. Always something to suit everyone and a great variety with options changing daily. I enjoyed all my meals, bearing in mind the food is prepared on a mass level for over 300/400 people daily. Japanese restaurant admittedly was awful all round. Staff were very unfriendly, seemed to be because we were English. We asked for an English menu 3 times. One lady serving me refused to take my order in English... very bazaar. The restaurant also had a bad smell alongside very bad food. Krystal Restaurant is great, lovely team and restaurant manager. Food was great and presentation was great. Particularly the Lobster Risotto it contains a while lobster and loads of king prawns. Steak and Lobster restaurant again was great, they over cooked the food on our first visit but everyone around the pool told us the food was great so we tried it again. Second time round, everything was perfect. My partner ordered both the steak dish and lobster dish on both occasions! Bodega Restaurant (something along those lines). You cant fault it, meat was cooked great and great selection. The salad bar was also satisfactory with different choices to the buffet restaurant. But deserts were a little limited. Entertainment team - 10/10 they are just fab. Such a fun bunch who show so much pride in their job and work so hard. Shows are great and to a high standard. Day activities are also always available and they encourage everyone to join in. Gym and indoor spa are very dated but we used to walk over to Rui Bavaro and use theirs which was clean and modern. Pool was great and beach were great. Drinks are literally on tap morning, noon and night with a fab selection. The hotel does require a lot of work, its very impressive and well kept. However is now very tired. I was a little disappointed to find out it is being closed for refurbishment in a few months. I feel we should have been told. I had already changed my booking from Bambuu after seeing negative comments of hotel works. Also, I was not told about the rule change to the sister hotel usages. No eating in the other hotels at all now, little disappointing as that was a reason for booking within the RUI resort. But can drink in Bamboo or Naiboa. Overall, a very pleasant stay at this hotel.

Myself and 9 other members of my family have just returned from this grand old hotel after a superb two week break. Firstly may I say a huge well done and thank you to all the staff. They were all extremely friendly and the service and attention we received were second to none. Especially Francesca & Chaggy in the buffet restaurant. This hotel is old and is due to renovation so if you want bang up to date go somewhere else, dont moan!!! If you do your research you will see that it is a bit old fashioned but that is part of its charm!! The food is probaly the best I have had at an all inclusive in the buffet and the wine and champagne very nice too The grounds and hotel are immaculately clean and the rooms too. Towels and bedding changed daily! Beach lovely if a bit seaweedy but that may be due to the recent violent weather. Entertaiment staff so full of energy and god dont they work long hours! I hope that they keep the style and elegance when they do the re-fit as it is a wonderful opulent nature. So once again huge thank you to the Riu Palace Punta Cana for a totally fabulous holiday

This is my day 1, been here one night, review! Read many varying reviews prior to arriving but this is stunning. Friendly, spotless and room big enough by far for myself and 2 teenage daughters. I will add more, after the holiday, we are here for 10 nights, but am totally relaxed. Can't ask for more.

I would recommend this hotel to any looking for a nice relaxing break away, yes the hotel is spread out but what are you in a hurry for your on holiday. Rooms are clean and spacious, all areas of the hotel are well maintained. Staff friendly and helpful, not much to do in the area but I was only looking to relax and do nothing.

NOT A 5 STAR

First of all I want to thank the staff at Riu Palace Punta Cana in the buffet restaurant (Don manuel) and the entertainment team, and to the cleaning ladies who work hard everyday....and a big thank you to the wedding coordinator Astrid. With regards to the Riu palace itself , it is infested with cockroaches and bugs in the washroom crawling on doors and on counter , the tubs are dirty and brownish in the washroom , the rooms smell like mold and very musty, as we had a group and each one of our rooms had the same issue no matter what floor we were on, I was on the main floor starting with 00 . The staff are kind and cleaning ladies are wonderful they just want to help but the resort itself isn't the expectation of a 5 star Riu. I was booked for a connecting junior suite which I didn't receive I have a family of 6 including myself, I had to change rooms and than was given 2 rooms next to one another both on the main level with roaches , I have 4 kids , and they sprayed our room twice and even though they said don't enter for 2 hours we would be at the pool or beach all day , after 6 hours of returning the room had a strong smell for my kids, the entire hallway smell musty and so do the rooms and than when I tried to change rooms again they advised me they had no more rooms left, but by third day there were too many locals staying there to fill up the rooms which made it chaos. The sheets felt damp and doors were always damn especially because we were in the rooms that start with 00..... It is definitely not a 5 star, I am only speaking from my families personal experience , Our group returned a few days ago ( Oct 2017). During our stay it had rained during the evening and while sitting in the theater the ceiling was leaking on our table and over our head , there was water damage in the ceiling when you look up you can tell ...closer to the DJ side . The buffet restaurant had a bucket one night as the ceiling was leaking as well. It wasn't worth the money we paid for sure....I traveled with my family and I am a travel agent. My family members had to switch rooms as well as the toilet in their rooms were broken , the elevator wasn't working for a few days and it is scary to enter in when it was working cause anytime it can stop and you would be stuck inside without any air condition. So for safety take the stairs .... My sister was upgraded to a Junior suite with Jacuzzi as she was going to be married there , which was a nice room but again with roaches.... The a la carte restaurants ( Krystal and Luigi) were not accommodating , literally they can only fit a small number , and each time we went in a small number they would advise us there is an hour wait or longer and to go to the buffet. We ate at the buffet for 6 nights , only on the night of the wedding we ate at the steak house . The food is the same each night maybe one or two dishes that were different, we all got stomach aches and let me tell you the gravol and Imodium is definitely required, please take that with you . My 15 family members who booked Saona Island excursion for $85.00 USD each adult and half price for kids , had the worst experience, They had advised the sunwing rep that there are kids and an infant on the boat and if the ride would be smooth , they were promised it was but instead he was speeding and it was scary especially with the mothers with their kids and an infant. They were advised that morning the weather would be sunny in samona but it was raining all day, they didn't receive much food , instead there were stray dogs on the beach area, and it wasn't as luxury or fun as it was made to be....on the way back they returned over an hour later , as the driver didn't know where they came from or what resort or area to return them too. He even left them on the bus for a while not knowing where to go...They returned wet, hungry . Majority of the family members complained after to the sunwing rep who than advised them she would speak to her supervisor but instead disappeared for 2 days , we were than advised it was her day off and someone else would be there but no one was , we didn't see her or anyone else and than we left early so there wasn't anyone at the sunwing desk in the lobby. I read all the reviews on Sunwing and trip advisor and I honestly didn't want to believe anything negative , we traveled with an open mind , but truly all the negative reviews are accurate ..... I will say sitting outside between the theater and buffet during the evening was nice when the band played music, we all got up to dance when the weather was nice that is ...as most of the nights it rained . That was fun, the beach is nice as well, but the waves were extremely high and we couldn't stay there too long , you will have people trying to sell you stuff on the beach, if you bargain you will get good prices, the shops are pricey but again try to bargain. The pool is fun to hang around with your family ,the entertainment team are nice and friendly people but the entertainment is repetitive and boring . There are quite a few missing tiles as you enter the pool. I do thank the waiters in the buffet as each night they would hold a table for our family in the back , we would tip them of course, but they were kind, I also thank the workers by the pool area as they would hold our spot by the pool area as well. Other than that I don't have much nice words to say about the Sunwing rep in the destination or the condition of the RIU Palace/Sunwing flight attendant Dilma on the return flight was horrendous On the way there the flight attendants on the flight were great I applaud them esp the gentleman, on the way back Ms DILMA was the rudest flight attendant I have ever seen. My cousin wanted to change her baby , you cannot fit in the restroom with an infant trying to change them plus there was a line up....she noticed in the end of the plane there were 3 empty seats , and across were 2 nurses sitting there , they told her just change the baby here, we are nurses we don't mind ......My cousin moved Dilma's jacket that was thrown on the seat which by the way should have been put in the back behind the washrooms where the flight attendants sit.....so my cousin moved it to the side so she doesn't sit on it ,she changed the baby quickly and had something laid on the seats anyway but she decided to wipe the seat out of courtesy....Dilma confronted my cousin next time I would appreciate it if you do not touch my jacket or remove it , and its not sanitary ...., as if your planeor seats are sanitary.... Dilma than decided to approach my cousin again who was sitting infront of me in row 18 .....and confronted her rudely again, stating I don't know what you did with my jacket but next time don't sit on my jacket in a RUDE tone , as my cousin was saying I didn't sit on your jacket I moved it to the side , she interrupted and said I don't know what you did but next time don't change your babies diaper there or remove my jacket, she really made this personal.....I even had to step in and advise her as I was lined up for the washroom and I saw with my own eyes as did the nurses sitting across the back row that my cousin wasn't sitting on her jacket... She and an Another flight attendant purposely didn't give us surveys to fill out, The othere attendant advised another attendant Claudia - who was so nice with blonde hair that we refused the surveys , which was a huge lie , we weren't even offered them, I am pretty sure they knew what we had to say about Dilma ...We had 48 family members already disappointed with the status of the Riu palace condition and now come deal with this attendant who is supposed to represent Sunwing in a good and positive manner providing customer service but Dilma was opposite , she's horrible honestly and I am sure if confronted she would say otherwise to cover her behind but we have so many witnesses . She was so rude and disappointing. I book majority of my clients with Sunwing , as an agent I like Sunwing, but this is first hand experience that I am advising. Maybe next year when the Riu Palace is renovated it will be a better place to stay but for now I am refraining from booking my clients there . That is my honest opinion.. Best regards.
