Bad rap for excursion rep
We were a group of 10 people and we booked about $3000.00 in 3 different excursions. A few of us were getting a 24 hr bug (stomach problems) and i was the unlucky one to get it on a Catamaran Cruise day. While everyone went i stayed back....when i asked the Apple Representitive for a $98.00 refund he told me i could go another day?...Myself? everyone else did it ! or i had to present a doctors note?.....Also rediculous! the cost to see the hotel Dr. would have cost me more than the $98.00 refund?......This is not even covered under the trip insurance that i also purchased for this trip?......I will SURELY think twice for booking excursions with APPLE in the future...... I was not a very happy customer.
Our Favorite Resort in Mexico
We have stayed at four different all-inclusive resorts in Mexico so far and this is our favorite. What makes it so great is the resort layout. The beach is close to the pool area and bars and the rooms surround the pool and restaurants. The beach with palm trees is the best as you can be under the shade or out in the open sun. Plenty of chairs so you don't have to fight for them. Food choice is extensive and the quality is excellent.
The one thing I would like to see is coffee stations around the resort. I don't like to make it in the room because the quality is typically poor. The only way to get coffee was at the one opened restaurant in the morning or at the sports bar.
Top shelf alcohol at the bars was nice.
Great place, great food, great beach
Excellent place, only comment is the longer you diversity of food reduces. The food is was always good.
Great honeymoon spot
My wife and I spend 4 days at the RIU Palace, Riviera Maya last week. It was an incredible 4 days. Pool and beach were top notch. Of course it helped that we had perfect weather. Food options were good. Japanese and Fushion restaurants took the cake! (pants and shoes required for men). The food was great at both. You will not leave hungry at any of the restaurants. No reservations required for any of them. We did have to wait about 30 mins for a table at the fusion restaurant. The ONLY complaint we had about the entire week was the air conditioning was apparently not working at the fushion restaurant. With that, in addition to the 30 min wait, made it less than perfect. But the food was still excellent! Overall- I would definitely recommend this resort to other families!
Be carfeful where you step
Pool had missing tiles inside the pool, beach was covered with seaweed, coffee maker not working in room took a full day to get a replacement. The buffet had the same food night after night
Beautiful resort, but a few drawbacks...
The hotel is absolutely beautiful but one problem were the cockroaches in the room. I killed 3 of them during our stay. Also the hotel needs some renovations; there were loose tiles in the room & on the balcony. Otherwise, the service & food were excellent & the staff is very friendly.
The hotel lobby, court yard, bars, restuarants, beach, food, drinks, and pool were all very nice, no complaints there. The hotel rooms need some improvements. We had some ants in our room that we did not know where they were coming from and the room seemed a bit dated. Overall the hotel was nice.
king size bed
I made reservations for all 6 of us staying in 3 rooms, requesting all king size beds. got there and my room was two queen beds, we are a gay couple who have stayed there 2 times before,,,, our comfort level was shattered from our prior visits. we were promptly put into another room, the room smelled all week and upon using the spa tub a brown sludge came out of jets when it was turned on ,,, the bed ruffle was dirty and I went to the front desk and asked for these things to be attended to,,,, the room looked clean and the maid was always making things look good. however.... the smell was there all week and dust ruffle was dirty. I have never made a compliant about this riu and would love to go back again , we have been told it is up for a makeover next year, I'm hesitant to go back. I hope this helps someone else as a gay couple who are married I am 53 and my husband is a 44 year old episcopal priest. we travel twice a year. I hope this helps

Fantastic Family Getaway!
We had a wonderful time at Riu Palace. We traveled with our 2 kids, 5 and 8. The kids had a blast- made many friends from around the world and constantly had fun activities. The kids-club ladies were very sweet and accommodating.
The staff was beyond friendly. The hotel itself was beautiful- fountains and beautiful landscape throughout. Every night was a different theme- staff was decorating after breakfast each day. Live music after dinner each night, along with a special show for kids. There were "game shows", a pinata, kids' sing-along, etc. Staff was always willing to make "special" drinks for kids (without the alcohol, natch).
Dinner was OK. The main buffet was the best choice for dinner, rather than the specialty restaurants which often had a wait and the food was not that great (in my opinion). There was always a lot of fresh fruit that was delicious. The main Buffet restaurant had live stations with everything from made-to-order fajitas to paella. I am a vegetarian, so i was hesitant about the food situation. The buffet restaurant always had something for me, and staff was willing to make something special for me. There was usually a vegetarian section. There were also sections like Italian, Mexican, seafood, etc. Lots and lots of seafood- and for you meat-eaters, there is a steak house.
The beach was beautiful- very clean and not crowded. We were always able to find a chair/spot for building sand castles. The pool was very nice, but a bit cold. They had activities by the pool daily, like water aerobics, paper airplane contests, etc. If you want quiet, head to the beach.
The rooms itself were laid out nicely- easy to get to. They were clean and basic. We couldn't get the TV to show anything other than Spanish speaking shows- but that's ok because we are on vacation!
My only complaint is that the hallways were a bit noisy- they echoed. Often people were loud going back to their rooms at night. Also, the wine selection was terrible. There is no option to purchase nicer wines- I even went out looking in stores!
There are several places within walking distance, and if you want to take a cab into Playa del Carmen it's only a 5 minute ride. I would definitely visit again!
What an amazing resort!!!! Easy check-in, beautiful view from the room. The staff was cordial and always ready to take a drink order. Non-stop fun - activities all day and a free show at night ... Will return and stay longer- only had 4 days...
Awesome Vacation at a gorgeous place
We just came back from a week at the Riu Palace Riviera Maya and had such a wonderful time!
Here are the positives and negatives:
The resort is gorgeous! We went during a time when it was only 65% capacity and never felt crowded or had issues finding a lounge chair at the pool or at the beach .. the grounds are immaculate and there are always people cleaning night and day! It is a grand hotel, Spanish architecture and the long walkways are lined with palm trees.. lots of photo ops!
you can easily walk to the buffet and theatre. We have stayed at other huge resorts (I e Punta Cana) where you need to take a golf cart tram to get places — not here.
The beach is stunning and no seaweed! It’s like a photo from your computers screensaver! There are lots of palm trees for shade and loungers.. didn’t have to wake up at 5 am to get a space like in other resorts in the past !
The best a la carte restaurant was Crystal.. and the Mexican was good too! The worst was the Brazilian (Rodrigo?) - we got there and there at 8 pm and there was no food left at the salad bar and no one replenishing it! We walked to the buffet and had a much better selection..
The buffets at this resort are awesome. Different theme nights (Gala night , Asian night ) so you can eat there if you don’t get into an a la carte restaurant .. But they should enforce the hand sanitizer rule when walking into the room that I saw at other resorts .. people coughing and touching tongs - germ fest !
The selection of food is amazing! And the presentation was beautiful . The employees were friendly and accommodating and the minute you sit down someone’s coming to help you .
Minutes away from 5th Avenue — a must see - shops , restaurants , really vibrant scene! Take a taxi it’s only $6...or walk ...
Took a Tulum excursion - wonderful
And gorgeous place — pyramids at the edge of the Caribbean .. and amazingly they had a new shopping area near the archeological sight with Starbucks , Haagen Daaz, Subway (!!)- hmmm wonder what the ancient Mayans would think of that!?...
Great night shows at an old but cozy theatre... the staff are amazing dancers and Work so hard all day with beach and pool activities and then did awesome dance routines and entertainment at night ! Great choreography and staging ...
Would like to commend several outstanding employees at this resort:
Tania (breakfast buffet, egg chef)- always smiling and outstanding customer service!!
Lydia (breakfast and lunch server ) - greeted us with a big smile and very attentive !!
Joshua (water aerobics) - such a fun class!!
Katie and Terry (activities staff) - so kind and friendly
Beach Zumba instructors — what a fun class! Loved it
Our room was great - first building overlooking the pool.. steps to the beach !
Great service at the pool - Victor — every day greeted us with a smile and even made us an iced coffee upon request when I didn’t think they had that on the menu ! Very accommodating !
Resort is getting old — broken handle on toilets at the spa — how hard is it to replace a toilet ?!
Rooms are old - with outdated jacuzzi - time to change to shower stalls .. I had to climb into shower every day - couldn’t imagine anyone over 60 liking this feature !
Music selection at the pool - we are in Mexico so why play American country music ?! How about some Spanish music like Regggaeton, Daddy Yankee, Pitt Bull, Enrique to make us feel like we have left our freezing hometowns and are now in a Mexican paradise ?
Chairs at theatre are old and sagging..
Enforce the antibacterial stuff before walking into restaurants and buffet .
No potable water (!!) in the rooms - use the mineral water to brush teeth and put on contacts etc ..’don’t risk getting sick!
Long story short — this resort is gorgeous and you will have a great time - and want to return time and time again !
Beautiful property but new beds and linens are needed
We stayed in Riu Palace Cancun in 2017 and checked out this sister resort, Riu Palace Riviera Maya, at the time. It is a gorgeous property and having also had a wonderful experience at the Riu Palace in Cabo San Lucas, we booked a week in January 2018.
The hotel and grounds are the most impressive of the three properties. The beach and ocean access is the best we've experienced in Mexico.
Staff at the Riu always are great and this resort is no different.
It is a charming resort featuring beautiful architectural details, fine materials and finishings, and a warm Mexican feeling. It is a wonderful size resort as well. These are the pros. The cons are as follows:
1. the bed was really uncomfortable -- hard and unyielding - very difficult to lay on your side for long.
2. the linens were scratchy! Our sheet actually had some crusted stuff (ugh) on it as well. We subsequently went to the Moon Palace immediately after leaving the RPRM to attend a wedding and it felt like bliss sinking into a comfortable bed with luxurious feeling linens.
3. the food quality is always excellent at the Riu Palaces, but it seemed that the Chef at this particular resort doesn't take the same degree of pride that we've noticed in the other resorts, or even at the neighbouring RP Mexico, which we toured and where the food presentation at the buffet just looked so much more inviting.
4. the main dining areas were very pleasant but the restaurant by the beach (Chilis) is not -unfortunate since that also becomes the steak restaurant in the evenings and the ambience there is so poor that it seems hardly anyone goes there.
5. the beach lounges won't actually allow you to sit up, so if you want to read, you have to be partially laying down.
I am posting this review since i really want to come back to this resort, but i want them to get new beds/mattresses and some good linens. Five star resorts need to feature good bedding!
My husband and I just came back from Mexico. This was our second stay at Riu Palace Rivera Maya and we also stayed at Riu Palace Mexico several times. We travel to Mexico 3-4 times a year and we stayed at a lot of different resorts, but Riu Palace have the Best Service ever!!!! The beach was very clean and the water was turquoise color. The food was amazing and the wine at the buffet was really good. I do like that they serve champagne all the time too. We were celebrating our Anniversary and the staff delivered champagne and chocolate covered strawberries. My only wish they will make one of them adults only resort. We will be staying again and again at Riu Palace in the future!
