Great honeymoon spot
My wife and I spend 4 days at the RIU Palace, Riviera Maya last week. It was an incredible 4 days. Pool and beach were top notch. Of course it helped that we had perfect weather. Food options were good. Japanese and Fushion restaurants took the cake! (pants and shoes required for men). The food was great at both. You will not leave hungry at any of the restaurants. No reservations required for any of them. We did have to wait about 30 mins for a table at the fusion restaurant. The ONLY complaint we had about the entire week was the air conditioning was apparently not working at the fushion restaurant. With that, in addition to the 30 min wait, made it less than perfect. But the food was still excellent! Overall- I would definitely recommend this resort to other families!
Be carfeful where you step
Pool had missing tiles inside the pool, beach was covered with seaweed, coffee maker not working in room took a full day to get a replacement. The buffet had the same food night after night
Beautiful resort, but a few drawbacks...
The hotel is absolutely beautiful but one problem were the cockroaches in the room. I killed 3 of them during our stay. Also the hotel needs some renovations; there were loose tiles in the room & on the balcony. Otherwise, the service & food were excellent & the staff is very friendly.
The hotel lobby, court yard, bars, restuarants, beach, food, drinks, and pool were all very nice, no complaints there. The hotel rooms need some improvements. We had some ants in our room that we did not know where they were coming from and the room seemed a bit dated. Overall the hotel was nice.
king size bed
I made reservations for all 6 of us staying in 3 rooms, requesting all king size beds. got there and my room was two queen beds, we are a gay couple who have stayed there 2 times before,,,, our comfort level was shattered from our prior visits. we were promptly put into another room, the room smelled all week and upon using the spa tub a brown sludge came out of jets when it was turned on ,,, the bed ruffle was dirty and I went to the front desk and asked for these things to be attended to,,,, the room looked clean and the maid was always making things look good. however.... the smell was there all week and dust ruffle was dirty. I have never made a compliant about this riu and would love to go back again , we have been told it is up for a makeover next year, I'm hesitant to go back. I hope this helps someone else as a gay couple who are married I am 53 and my husband is a 44 year old episcopal priest. we travel twice a year. I hope this helps
I have two complaints. Every morning bright and early I would be awakened by remodeling of the room next door. They should have waitied until after 10am or not book guest next to a room that is being worked on. the end complaint is again bright and early the maid service would be rolling their carts down the hallway on the ceramic tile floors which made a terrible racket wakening us up every morning around 6am. The walls are very thin and you can hear anyone talking and anything going down the hallways.
Too much seaweed -- Not enough air conditioning -- Food okay
It was a nice trip, there were definitely pros and cons.
Great snorkeling excursion
Hotel staff was nice
Direct flight was great
Free WiFi at hotel
Transportation from airport to hotel was almost 3 hours! -- next time we will not share transportation!
Food was okay. We ate at all the specialty restaurants so it was nice to change it up every night because of the variety.
Our A/C didn't work night 2 so on day 3 they switched our room to a suite -- which must have been for honeymooners because it only had one king size bed... However we all managed to fit in the bed. I was happy to switch rooms because our first room had weird little bugs in it.
Great location and staff - hotel needs upgrades
I have stayed at the Riu Palace Riviera Maya four times. Each time the service provided by the staff has been excellent. The hotel has been too with the exception of this last trip. The hotel is in dire need of a remodel and upgrade. Tiles are missing from the pool, fixtures are loose in the bathrooms, a light cover in the pool was attached with a zip tie, there is lots of rust around light fixtures and the pool area, the sheets on the bed were like sandpaper, there was water damage in several areas of the hotel and overall the place is just looking dated and worn down. That being said the grounds were still immaculate and the beach area is beautiful. They are supposedly scheduled for a remodel in 2018; however, we heard rumors it may not happen next year. That would be a mistake in my opinion. If there is not a remodel we may look at other locations for our next trip.
The service in the hotel and beach was awesome. Very attentive and always with a smile. It is a family resort with a lot of young children . The entertainment at night was not that great.
Pool had sand, slippery steps into pool from many guests suntan lotion, buffet food needed a little more spices not too much, tour information not when you check in but when you are planning your trip, maybe have a shuttle to go to town instead of looking for a cab. The food in the specialty restaurants were excellent, son liked trying the different specialty meats. I know resorts are safe but never saw security as now days everyone needs to be on alert everywhere.
Riu Palace Riviera Maya is Awesome!
I highly recommend considering this hotel if you're planning a trip to the Riviera Maya (Playa Del Carmen) area. The service is first class as the staff meets all your needs. The facilities are impeccable and second to none! The food is very good. The beach area is amazing! We thoroughly enjoyed our week long stay here and will be back to stay here again in the future!

4th time here and planning our 5th!
Had a wonderful time during our most recent 6 night stay in early Sept 2017. The front desk, restaurant workers, bar staff and the other services team are all hard working people who do all they can to ensure you have a great vacation.
The rooms are clean and well appointed. Can't seem to leave the room without a shot of tequila that is provided (vodka, whiskey and rum too)! The housekeeping staff does a great job too. I try to leave a couple of dollars for housekeeping every day because "gracias" just doesn't seem like thank you enough.
Mendez, who works in the restaurants, is one of our favorite people at the resort. He's been so wonderful on each of our visits and remembers us each time. During 1 trip my mother started to choke and he was right there to assist. Carlos O, Ivan and Antonio are smiling and happy to get whatever you need each morning as well as anytime.
The Other Services dept does a great job of having a variety activities. AquaGym is always fun! I don't know his name but the guy with white lines sunglasses is a fav. It's nice that they don't have music blasting at the pool from open to close. There are a couple of quiet hours which is appreciated!! Don't forget the Bingo! When Ricky (?) calls the numbers is a lot of languages which makes if fun for all lot of us. I don't speak German but he makes it sound fun.
The beach....very good! Highly recommend this property.
Great Beach, Pool, Drinks and Service!!
Beautiful resort! Friendly staff and great service whether at the pool, beach, bars or dining. Housekeeping needs a shout out too! Our room was cleaned spotless everyday and nice little touches, towel art, chocolates, flowers etc.. Sports bar was fun and drinks were great and consistent across the resort. Lots of chairs available, beach or pool and never had a problem finding shade either. Chili's Steakhouse was fantastic, best steak we have had so far on our trips to Mexico. Don Manolo buffet was wonderful, many food choices and we had some delicious meals there. Night time entertainment was not our thing here but we heard many other guests talking about how much they enjoyed different shows. Saw zero top-less at the beach. Not sure if this was normal here or not allowed, we never asked either. But the twins do like being out in the sun, so that was a bummer. We will keep this resort on our 'will visit again' list!!
My husband and I have been to this resort twice and have had lovely vacations both times. The staff is wonderful and professional. The grounds are spectacular and in the safe enclave of Playacar, a gated community within Playa del Carmen. The beach is gorgeous, white sand for miles. No seaweed! The restaurants are good, the breakfast buffet is excellent. The rooms are clean and the air conditioning is very good and new. Each room has a balcony, which was a lovely spot for morning coffee. The atmosphere is subdued and easy going, not a crazy kid or teen party atmosphere. We will return here in November for our third visit as we like it so much!
Best hotel I've been too
Absolutely stunning, could not fault this hotel! The staff were so friendly and helpful, the rooms were impeccably made up every day and the facilities were incredible! We did water sports on the beach and relaxed by the pool! The restaurants were great, slightly annoying that you men need trousers for the a la Carte restaurants, but the buffet ones were just as good! Would definitely love to go back!
Palacial service exquisite food
I returned to this hotel after several years to celebrate my mothers 80th Birthday. It has NOT missed a beat. It remains pristine in its grandeur and impeccable cleanliness. There is so much good to report here, hard to create a synopsis of services that will do it justice. The hotel is gorgeous. Chandeliers, endless paintings , hand crafted wood of old world elegance and very large rooms with a living room and huge beds and balconies. This hotel employs many chefs around the world. The cuisine is top notch and the variety and quality endless. Nightly it has a theme, Gala, International carribean. There is something for everyone and every diet and palate. All of it is excellent. Whether it be morining , noon or night Don Manolo Restaurant has white linen tables, beautiful table settings and cloth napkins. The alcoholic beverages are high grade in quality and they have everything from wine, champagne to brandies stocked. Same goe's for soft drinks and natural juices that are hand squeezed daily.
The delicious desserts can send you into sugar coma heaven. I have toured their Kitchen (a service they freely offer) and it is facinating how they rise at the wee hours of the day to prep and cook so that the correct temperature and texture accompanies every dish. The herbs and seasonings are all natural so that each entree can be fully savored wherein you recognize every ingredient.. You will NOT find any GMO ingredients of any kind. Perhaps what I find most facinating as this is my third time is how well the staff gets along. They are ranked. Each staff member has their own dominion and responsibility and they work happily like a well oiled machine. it is NOT FAKE either. You feel it in their customer service and in the lovely comraderie they have with one another. The patron benefits from a very happy staff devoted to please you at every turn. In fact they remind you often that if you can not find what you want, they will make it happen. Inner workins behind the happy personnel:Often many of the waiters are promoted in house as they make their way to the top by excelling in their craft. Just chat with them. They can literally talk in detail about the process and expectatioins to advance in their designated jobs.
Ok back to vacation. Mom's Birthday was celebrated 3 separate times. The room was made up with balloon bouquets resembling flowers and a separate combination of paper machete on towels to produce a trully creative, colorful and beautiful birthday cake. Then another night a dining table was decorated with sparkles, the entire staff sang Happy Birthday and they made a special Birthday cake for her with fire works. No Lie. Some may think it over the top. But imagine if this were your 80 year old mom who deserves the world and felt like a queen. It was the gift that kept on giving.Pretty special!. Finally the entertainment producer who puts on the theatre productions invited mom up to the stage where she was serenaded by Mariachi's. It was there that she took her first drink of liquer ever (TEQUILA SHOT), then danced on stage for 29 minutes straight. No doubt she was a hit with the audience and I feared her ticker might give out from the excitement. But all in all my mom was given the birthday of a life time and myself along with endless guests from around the world lived out our stay like the rich and famous. There werecircus shows, impersonating shows of Elvis, Michael Jackson and Mariachi shows to name a few. Every night there is something different. A day time schedule starts early with yoga, zumba, cooking classes, dance classes, pool parties, endless games and there is even a camp and day club for the kiddo's full of activities. The Ocean is the jewel in this caribbean coast with dark, light blue waters that are stripped in aqua marine. The beach too has many activities such as jet skies, para sailing and good old fashion swimming in tepid deliciously warm waters. For those who enjoy the pool it has 2-3 I lost count. There is also a small but efficient gym and a lovely Spa withmany upscale services you find in the USA. Should anyone get ill there is a 24 hour doctor in the hotel nd a state of the art pharmacy on the lower level below the hotel. My favorite night was Mexican night. I learned to play a lot of Mexican games, won chips that I turned in for nice prizes and delighted in watching the children break open a HUGE pinata. LOVE THIS PLACE!!!!!!!. I came home sated, peaceful and renewed. Mom is sharing her joy with friends and family at her end. They all commented on how happy she is. Thank you to all of the staff, entertainers, chefs and especially Cesar who made us feel like family.
