Apple Vacations Traveller Reviews
It was all good!
I stayed at the RIU Ocho Rios and it was a good trip for my golden 22nd birthday. There were 9 of us 3 to a room the stay was good but the only issue is that we all paid full price and they only gave WIFI Access too two people in the room which really was the down fall of the entire trip as we depend on the wifi. We had to pay an additional $30 which should have been outlined by Apple Vacations when we booked the reservation. Overall the trip was good. There are drivers present 24 hours a day which was good. There was lots of night life and plenty of food/drinks.
I have nothing but positive things to say about my overall experience. From the time we arrived until the time we left everyone was so friendly and accommodating. The resort was clean and the view was absolutely beautiful! The food at every restaurant was delicious, especially the Chinese place where we ate 3 different times.
The hotel premises were not clean enough. Pool was cleaned once during our stay. The main buffet was not open during lunch, and other restaurants didn't have enough space and food variety.
Reverberations in a beach paradise
As an older couple, we planned on being live-in vacationers most of the time. Service and overall food quality were excellent, but the echos in hallways on into the early a.m. hours meant that the comfort level was not what if might have been. We had a great field trip with Sebert, our guide, to a working plantation, and for a younger, more noise tolerant clientele, this trip to Ocho Rios might indeed be just what these folks are looking for.
Amazing for the price
Really good place. Walk right out your room to 2 nice pools and a huge beach front. Water is very clear. We thought it was well worth the price.
Get what you paid for
We paid for a upgrade which included more options for dinner which were great, however, the jacuzzi tub that we paid for did not work. We didn't want to bother the hotel staff about the problem, but the room itself was beautiful.
The RUI disappointment
When traveling it's the "little" details that can make or break a nice vacation. To start with, there is a secret about the in-room safe. They don't tell you at check-in that you have to ask for the lock and the key. The room door key is a big metal key that didn't work half the time and the safe key didn't work half the time. No help with luggage when arriving or leaving. They need 4 times more employees to help all the people wandering around trying to figure things out. Standing in line for restrauants isn't fun either. No reservations and there is only one sit-down restrauant we could use. Found out we had the wrong color wrist band to qualify us to eat anywhere else. No pool side service for drinks. The glasses, and in some cases dishes just piled up all day. People were taking pictures of overflowing garbage cans around the pool and on the beach. Which attracted big birds. BUT, the sunshine was great. We discovered the "waiting list game" for restrauants by accident. There is no shampoo or lotion in the rooms and out king bed was 2 double beds made up separately and pushed together. The only restrooms pool side was inside a restrauant and when in an evening restrauant you had to go all the way to the bar and entertainment area. No security guards or management watching staff congregate and talk for hours. On our last morning, witnessed a young family with 3 kids struggling to clean up after a cereal bowl crashed to the floor. A lady from another table handed them some napkins and one server handed that some napkins. The mother went to change and the dad while holding the baby was trying to clean up shards of bowl and oatmeal while the other 2 kids stayed seated. Really? That's unacceptable. My spa treatments were the hi-lite of my 7 days thanks to Diana. We put our towels out and went for breakfast and they were taken. Yet the apple representative told us we didn't need to carry our "keys" around with us. Just leave your stuff on a chair and go do what you want. Never going back to Jamaica.
Great Place. Tough crowd of customers
Well worth staying at this resort great friendly service !
Did not respond to bathroom plumbing problems until threatened with moving romm after 9 hours
My stay at riu Ocho Rio
I was not given the ocean room view that I paid for. Instead they gave me a partial ocean view and said this ai all they had at that time. Told me wait until next day. Next day came I was I'll and they wanted me to check out at 12pm and woul d have to wait until 4pm to check back in the liner was dirty and towels were not available until 4pm each day the hotel was under staff and th the facility was not kept clean. The beach had trash and coral reef on the shore. Entertainment was about the only thing that was decent. The food was not a 5 star. Overall I will not be going back to this hotel in the future. I rate this apple vacation hotel and my vacation at a 3. Very disappointed.

Amazing wedding trip!
We booked our wedding here. We were upgraded to a large beautiful suite. Total of 19 ppl. Resort is awesome, clean and staff is friendly. Food is ok. They tell you that you don't need to make dinner reservations but you do for some. Wedding coordinator was good except color scheme was wrong, and some of the fresh flowers I ordered were dead. There is no room service at this resort and they do not allow you to take food out of the buffet area. Pools were great. Beach on one side is better than the other due to rocks and seaweed. Bars were great. The club allows outside visitors so it gets a little wild. Although we were told marijuana is illegal in Jamaica you smell it everywhere. Resort entertainment was good.
Tip your servers
I stayed at RIU Ocho Rios in July for a week with a friend. It was my first time in Jamaica. When you walk into the lobby, you immediately get a view that people come to Jamaica for-beautiful ocean, sand, and palm trees. The staff at the RIU Ocho Rios was the best customer service I've experienced. They were friendly, helpful, and diligent. The best restaurant at the resort to eat at is the Steakhouse. Mario was our server. He was excellent! Even though it is an all-inclusive resort, I recommend people tip the staff. They go over and above to make sure their guests have an enjoyable time! Definitely would go back!
We wanted to overnight to go to the beach and Riu Ocho Rios had a good rate and so we booked. Reception was pleasant and allowed us to access the property early. We had lunch and then proceeded to our room. Quite a trek and on a high floor but room was clean and everything worked as expected. We visited the beach and pool and it was lots of fun. There were planned games and activities, though we didn't participate it created a nice vibe. Now let's get to the high point! Dinner was amazing. Deluxe buffet with lobster, steak, sushi and oxtail. The food was delicious. Endless dessert options. We skipped the nightly entertainment and turned in early. The next day we went to the beach and pool again. Checked out, then had lunch and left. Great value for money. For the most part the staff were polite. A few friendly, with unfriendly being reserved as the assessment for the pool bartender. Fabulous experience, we will visit again.
What a pity
As a party of 7 with ages from 19 to 70 we stayed at the end of August/ beginning of September for 2 weeks in the Deluxe side of the resort.
This could be a beautiful resort, it has a good beach with a gentle slope into the sea and an abundance of fish to be seen, 2 good size pools with no early morning towel games, well kept grounds, most rooms have a sea view, the food is of a good standard for an all inclusive, the staff are mostly efficient and good natured, the pool bar and Bob Marley bar staff are good fun. Although there is no booking system for the speciality restaurants we just turned up at the time we wanted to eat and had no problem getting a table. The couple of difficulties we reported about our room were dealt with to our satisfaction and the wifi in our rooms was good although limited to 2 devices.
The entire hotel building is worn and dilapidated. There are many chipped tiles on the floors, marks and much damage to the walls, the common area furnishing was broken and battered, the pools had many missing tiles and the edges were cracked and badly marked and the water became cloudy as the day progressed, the pool showers had varying degrees of damage, one with a missing shower head and one that the wind blew round so it sprayed into the garden if not held, one of the lifts was constantly out of action.
The door to our room did not close automatically as it should, so one day our door was left open by one of the staff, we could not close one of drawers in the bedroom, the window net curtain had mildew, the television screen had a small crack, the floor tiles were cracked and the woodwork was scratched and chipped, the balcony rail was loose in the wall, the wall safe was key operated so carrying the key was a problem. The bed sheets were only changed once during our stay and the bottom sheet was replaced with a top cover which did not fit properly. We had this changed but it should not happen in a 5* hotel.
We rarely saw any hotel management and so supervision and enforcement of good practice was lacking. Although there were notices to the contrary guests took food from the restaurants and ate it while walking about or round the pool and common areas leaving a mess which the staff to the most part ignored.
Due to the layout of the hotel the ordinary side had close access to the Italian, Jerk hut and the buffet for lunch, the Deluxe side has close access to a buffet for lunch. When the occupancy of the hotel falls below a certain level they close one of the buffet restaurants. The one they choose to close is the the one in the Deluxe area. The only open buffet is now on the far side of the resort. This means the Deluxe guests have to walk through the entire resort, a third of a mile round trip and when you get there it is overcrowded, chaotic and understaffed. As table were not cleared quick enough birds descended on the abandoned food on plates and proceeded to spread it over the table and floor. We only went once , it was not worth the walk. We spoke to the assistant manager about the disruption to the Deluxe guests but nothing changed.
There are no premium drinks in the resort, Smirnoff vodka and Martini are the only recognisable brands and the Smirnoff is only available in the room.
The evening entertainment has a better variety than most Riu resorts we have stayed in. Unfortunately the entertainment staff have no concept of the volume required for people to hear what is being said without endangering their hearing. Presenters shouting down microphones which are already too loud only makes the distortion so bad that you cannot understand what they are saying and the volume of the music is impossible to shout over. It is not possible to escape the noise in any of the communal areas as the theatre is open to all, even if you cannot see the stage. This noise was contrasted by the one outside act, a Michael Jackson tribute, they used the necessary volume to be heard without causing hearing damage. I know that this is a club hotel and has a party atmosphere but words cannot describe the noise levels in use.
We have stayed in many Riu resorts in different countries, if this had been the first then we would not have ever used Riu again. As it is we know that Riu can do better and we hope they will bring this hotel up to their usual standard as at the moment it will give them a bad name.
Amazing hotel, lovely staff, great holiday!
I stayed at Club Hotel Riu Ocho Rios for 2 weeks 28th August - 12th September 2017, as it being my first trip to Jamaica I was abit worried from things I had heard about leaving the hotel etc. But I can honestly say not once was me and my friend as 2 young girls on a holiday alone we was not harassed once, nor was we ever feeling unsafe in or out of the hotel.
We enjoyed trips to:
• Dunn's river falls via the party boat on the hotel beach
• Hoov's horse riding booked through the Thomson team in hotel reception
• Nine Mile trip also booked through the Thomson team.
The food daily was changed to different themes but ALWAYS suited and catered for all types of eaters whether it was adventurous, plain/simple or fussy.. either way food was always great (some but very little wasn't as seasoned as expected BUT that was also catered for children's needs aswell so was expected).
The maid's cleaned our room daily with fresh sheets and towels, and was always friendly. We had our fridge of fizzy drinks, beers and alcohol dispensers topped up daily to every 2 days which was great and refreshing after a long hard day around the pool soaking up the sun! (Which was also all free of charge).
Breakfast was American style (bacon, eggs, hash browns, Ackee salt fish, toast, cereals etc.
Lunch had a variety but we ALWAYS found ourselves at the jerk hut on the beach which I can honestly say was out of this world. It wasn't spicey but VERY flavourful with a optional sweet jerk sauce or spicey for the hot food lovers!
Dinner was great, different range everyday and also a'la cart's which you obviously had to get there early for but we didn't need to attend there as the food was always above standards in the normal buffet restaurant.
Daily we got new towels to take to the pool or the beach which we handed in of a evening and got new ones with our pool cards in the morning.
Pool bar played excellent music, staff was always friendly and was over generous with the amounts of rum they gave which was amazing!
Animation staff was lovely, friendly and very entertaining without being too overpowering. We loved Kelly, Ben Ten, Bird man, Chad and the rest!!!
Monday we loved the all white beach party, during the week entertainment on stage was good daily but my favourite night was a Thursday which showed the different stages of how Jamaican music developed over the years, thankfully I got to see that show twice during my trip! Every night except Mondays they have the Pacha nightclub which starts at 11pm - 2am which played a wide range of music with cool air conditioning and a lovely atmosphere.... certain nights wasn't as lively as others but that was through no fault of the hotels it was the holiday makers but once it got abit more busy (around midnight) we didn't want it to end.
We went on a few trips out of the hotel without any tour guides but booked return taxi's from the hotel reception they was always friendly, informative on surrounding area's and made sure we got to and from our destination back to hotel safely (was always happy to wait around for us until we was ready to come back which as 2 young girls alone we found very good as we felt safe at all times).
Food in the 24hour restaurant was okay, could've been more but as it was a 24hr I didn't expect it. Would love to of had chips or nacho's without having to walk to the other bar but that isn't a complaint it could just be an improvement.
Overall I have had an amazing holiday, I felt safe, the hotel was always clean, staff always happy to help, weather amazing and food out of this world.
I am so unhappy to be home, I'm already looking forward to booking my trip back next summer.. 2 weeks just wasn't long enough!!!!
