If this is what all the RIU's are like, I will not ever stay at one again.

The hotel was a joke and the service was very laidback. In a restaurant (sir Richard's) we were told that they did have coffee but were not able to serve it. The selections on the buffet were cold and not very appetizing. The pool bar was good. They seem to enjoy their jobs. The housekeeping staff was just ok. When they serviced our room, they left no wash clothes or bath mat. We had to request it and it took time to arrive. The room we had was ok but when you went out on the balcony to sit, you could not see anything because of the solid wall. If it were not for the fact that our nephew was getting married there, we would have immediately left. We also found that an all inclusive allows drunkin people to be the normal. Even if someone has obviously had sufficient liquor, the staff will not stop giving them drinks. Also, the smoking of weed was continual on the premises. It was so sickening sweet that my wife felt ill. Having honeymooned in Jamaica 47 years ago, I found the island and its people have changed dramatically. They have no pride in anything they do or have. It is obvious by the trash on the roadways as well as the upkeep of the hotel property. The gardens were beautiful but the tile on the floors in the common areas needed a major overhaul as well as in the rooms. The elevators were of grave concern each time we entered. They were dark and musty. They gave us a feeling of concern when it would go to a floor we never pressed (no one was there to enter) then back to our floor.

We had an amazing week in Jamaica. The hotel staff was super friendly and accommodating. The food was average at the buffets. The beach was small but beautiful. The thing we will look for next year is better food and a better night life. Entertainment stopped at 10ish and they had a disco which was a bust. We did go out in Ocho Rios twice but would rather have stayed at the resort and party. Neil was a great help and we have already talked about our next trip!

Our Second Time Back to Riu Ocho Rios
HOPE L.
Feb 13 2018
This was our second trip to the Riu Ocho Rios. A few disturbing things on this tripwire the check-in and our room. Check-in, which is supposed to be at 3:00PM was not available to us until 5:30PM. We arrived at the hotel at 2:30 and were hungry since we departed Pittsburgh at 5:15 in the morning, so we welcomed the idea of lunch prior to check-in since our room was not ready. (We had two rooms as my sister and brother-in-law joined us this year) After lunch we checked back and still no rooms. Finally at 5:30 we were told our rooms were ready. We grabbed our own luggage, as bell service is never provided at this hotel, and found our way to our rooms only to find that our room was almost ready and the other was just starting to be cleaned. We ended up putting all the luggage in our room and waiting yet another hour! Needless to say, we had a late dinner as well. We requested an oceanfront room as well. We could see the ocean when standing on the balcony, but is we sat in the wonderful chairs provided on the balcony you can't see anything but a cement wall - there were no railings to enjoy looking at the ocean. Very disappointing for both of our rooms! We are repeat customers and I have been traveling with Apple Vacations for 25 or more years. These are a few details I would have hoped would be priority. The food at the hotel is plentiful and amazing. We enjoyed the friendly staff and the cleanliness of the hotel. The show are redundant and get old quickly. Not even much change from last years line up, though the entertainers work very hard and are good. The weather in Jamaica has been rainy I guess for a month or so and we definitely have no control over that, but having a balcony to sit on with an oceanfront view, which is what we paid for, would have been preferred.

The hotel was average, we did not have hot water for a day and jets in tub did not work. The cable tv was out for a day. We prefer hotels in Montego Bay because they are closer to airport. Staff was ok.

Room was still dirty; bed had sand in it from previous guests. Food was good but it seemed the staff for room service and at the restaurant was not very user friendly and were irritated when we requested something. We couldn't get them to clear tables for us to sit and enjoy our meals. When asked to have our mini bar stocked, they refused although we had been there for 4 nights already and it was only partially stocked upon arrival and was never restocked. The pool bar staff was amazing!! The staff at the hotel bars inside were rude, they refused to acknowlege me and when they did, they gave me N/A drinks. I had to have other members of our party get drinks for me. Beach was dirty-trash all over it and cups from the patrons were just laying around-I realize that the other guests could have taken a little more responsibility for their trash as the staff seemed to be short. We did hear from a few members of the team about their pay so am assuming that could be part of the reason the customer service was down.

We went to the Riu in Ochos Rios in 2005 when it opened and it was amazing. Everything is pretty much exactly the same except the hotel shows it's age due to poor upkeep. The food is also not nearly as good as it used to be. The main pool area was in a state of disrepair with the area around the pool perimeter literally in crumbles. Both pools has the water levels lowered to make repairs and none of the jets on the hot tubs worked....

It was all good!

I stayed at the RIU Ocho Rios and it was a good trip for my golden 22nd birthday. There were 9 of us 3 to a room the stay was good but the only issue is that we all paid full price and they only gave WIFI Access too two people in the room which really was the down fall of the entire trip as we depend on the wifi. We had to pay an additional $30 which should have been outlined by Apple Vacations when we booked the reservation. Overall the trip was good. There are drivers present 24 hours a day which was good. There was lots of night life and plenty of food/drinks.

I have nothing but positive things to say about my overall experience. From the time we arrived until the time we left everyone was so friendly and accommodating. The resort was clean and the view was absolutely beautiful! The food at every restaurant was delicious, especially the Chinese place where we ate 3 different times.

As an older couple, we planned on being live-in vacationers most of the time. Service and overall food quality were excellent, but the echos in hallways on into the early a.m. hours meant that the comfort level was not what if might have been. We had a great field trip with Sebert, our guide, to a working plantation, and for a younger, more noise tolerant clientele, this trip to Ocho Rios might indeed be just what these folks are looking for.

Loved the Riu & Jamaica!

My husband & I jgot back from 7 days at the Riu. Beautiful hotel, clean hotel room had a killer view (we got upgraded). Food was great. We mostly ate at the Buffet because it changes every day & was so good. Plenty of space at either pool and more than enough lounge chairs on the beach. Foam party was a riot! Try a Miami Vice or Dirty Banana from the bar. Two suggestions: put a coffee pot in the room and have the bar guy deliver the 4 Red Stripes for the fridge every day instead of every other day (i.e., we sat in the room at night on the balcony). Both minor issues. Ask for Elmo for a great deal on the Party Boat and if you need a driver, ask for Chris from Chris Tours to go shopping in DT Ochos or to go to any of the attractions! We will be back for sure! Jamaica Rocks!

Nice Hotel on Lovely Property

This is a really nice hotel on a lovely property but still leaves some things to be desired ! Our room was clean an comfortable and was always looked after by housekeeping, it did however have that musky humid smell all the time which is very hard to get rid of in a country that's hot and humid ! Nice to have bar and fridge in the room and this was also kept well stocked although some of the brands I have never heard of. Grounds are well manicured and well looked after always looking good. Staff always seemed to be friendly with the exception of some bar staff who seemed to expect a tip every time to asked for a drink ! Where the hotel went a bit off course was with the restaurants. There are a number of different restaurants in which the food quality is pretty good but they seem to close on a rotating basis which makes them overcrowded on many occasions and we had to wait sometimes up to 2 hours for dinner...even after tipping a guy $10 just for a table ! It seems as if they want to push you into going to the main buffet. Main buffet is the only place you can have breakfast and depending on what time you go this place is just a zoo, people shoving and pushing to get into the food, it's just not big enough to accommodate everyone and ends up being a disaster, they need to open another place for breakfast.Evening entertainment was so-so and although all inclusive most drinks at the bar with the exception of the rum are no name...never even heard of some of them ! There are a couple of restaurants that you need to have the upgrade to get into but we found if you tip a little you will get in so the only difference in the upgrade seems to be the size of room. Internet is limited to two devices so if you and your partner have more than one each you have to keep logging on and off your devices to get a connection.

Nice Stay - Enjoyed the Area & on site food

This is an older hotel but it's immaculate with phenomenal food. There are lots of food courts to choose from. The area is well shaded with palm trees as well as open areas of the beach. All in all, the hotel was worth the csot. What I didn't like - our cleaning lady did not clean the floors. She did bathroom, bed etc but no floors...it goes without being said that beach time, etc. leaves a lot of sand. Since the floors weren't cleaned (at least not thoroughly) the sand was always on floor and the would get into the beds as well. This doesn't make for a very comfortable rest. I had to ask to have sheets changed and even then, she said she changed them but they still had sand in them. Special note: Always, always, always go through your hotel (or ask before making plans).... it's cheaper. A taxi ride can be costly but if you take the hotel bus it's like $3-5. We went through hotel for all the excursions (that were available) and it was more affordable doing this than other offers. We initially went through Liberty Travel for the trip - the "Liberty Travel girls" who do concierge in the hotel were great. They were stationed there all day and when they saw you coming back from an outing, they would stop to check in on your vacation, they knew you by name, asked how things were going and when/if there was a problem - they called and took care of it (we had an incident at Dolphin Cove.) All in all - very nice experience for our first time in Jamaica

Stayed May 5th to 19th and had an enjoyable holiday even though the hotel was much larger than we were expecting and was very busy during our entire stay. We got back yesterday and have to say we cannot understand some of the negative reviews. It's a long flight and not cheap for those of us travelling from the UK, so some of the reviews were making us think we had made a big expensive mistake but far from it. We did not pay the extra to stay in the 'deluxe' side we were in the main building with a lovely view overlooking the pool and a side sea view. Room was a good size, cleaned and towels changed daily. The humidity makes things feel damp but a small price to pay for all the great rainforests in the surrounding area. Staff were all friendly and helpful in our experience and even though it was very busy, we didn't had any problems getting bar service or drinks with our meals. The beach is lovely, plenty of sunbeds on the beach and around both pools. Food was good with plenty of choice, we noticed a repeat of some dishes during out two week stay, but this was not a problem because of the amount of choice. The hotel is situated in a good position for some of the main attractions - Dunns river, Mystic Mountain etc, but like a few resorts in Jamaica not in an area where there are any shops to walk to and have a wonder round. We have been to a few riu hotels and have to say the entertainment team were some of the most hard working we have come across. The shows were quite funny and they provided a good entertainment programme overall. Sometimes it was bit loud for us and they catered for the American and Canadian audience but that's my personal opinion. Jerk chickhen from the hut on the beach - fabulous - as good as all the reviews say it is. All in all, we were happy with our holiday at this hotel but disappointed that Riu are jumping on the band wagon of having 'deluxe' options which meant we could't dine in the japanese restaurant or the sir richard. Tui rep was fine but the trips are expensive and not worth the money. Try pricing your own up first.

Just returned after reading the reviews on here I nearly changed the no.iday so glad I didn't. Loved it from the moment we checked in front desk were very friendly all smiling with a warm welcome. Room was lovely stayed on delux side no problems at all cleaned every day great house keeping. Food was really good lots of choice never had any trouble finding a good meal, went to sir Richard sir John steak house all outstanding with very good staff.. Entertainment staff work so hard not really my type of thing but enjoyed and the resident band with singers were brilliant loved it. Beach gorgeous kept so clean staff work so here cleaning everywhere all the time. Didn't really use pool area as more as prefer beach but looked lovely. I really don't understand what people can moan about staff work so hard I didn't tip all the time had same service regardless. I took my own kettle after reading on here but was told you can hire €20 that you get back on return. Don't listen to bad reviews go make your own mind up glad I did if your polite to staff they will be same back to you always had smiles and very polite. Used major1 tours for transfer both ways and trips Derron our driver was outstanding highly recommend and good price charged.
