Tyrone and Pool bar staff rocked!! The rest of the team should take notes from Tyrone and team!!
Room was still dirty; bed had sand in it from previous guests. Food was good but it seemed the staff for room service and at the restaurant was not very user friendly and were irritated when we requested something. We couldn't get them to clear tables for us to sit and enjoy our meals. When asked to have our mini bar stocked, they refused although we had been there for 4 nights already and it was only partially stocked upon arrival and was never restocked. The pool bar staff was amazing!! The staff at the hotel bars inside were rude, they refused to acknowlege me and when they did, they gave me N/A drinks. I had to have other members of our party get drinks for me. Beach was dirty-trash all over it and cups from the patrons were just laying around-I realize that the other guests could have taken a little more responsibility for their trash as the staff seemed to be short. We did hear from a few members of the team about their pay so am assuming that could be part of the reason the customer service was down.
We went to the Riu in Ochos Rios in 2005 when it opened and it was amazing. Everything is pretty much exactly the same except the hotel shows it's age due to poor upkeep. The food is also not nearly as good as it used to be. The main pool area was in a state of disrepair with the area around the pool perimeter literally in crumbles. Both pools has the water levels lowered to make repairs and none of the jets on the hot tubs worked....
It was all good!
I stayed at the RIU Ocho Rios and it was a good trip for my golden 22nd birthday. There were 9 of us 3 to a room the stay was good but the only issue is that we all paid full price and they only gave WIFI Access too two people in the room which really was the down fall of the entire trip as we depend on the wifi. We had to pay an additional $30 which should have been outlined by Apple Vacations when we booked the reservation. Overall the trip was good. There are drivers present 24 hours a day which was good. There was lots of night life and plenty of food/drinks.
I have nothing but positive things to say about my overall experience. From the time we arrived until the time we left everyone was so friendly and accommodating. The resort was clean and the view was absolutely beautiful! The food at every restaurant was delicious, especially the Chinese place where we ate 3 different times.
The hotel premises were not clean enough. Pool was cleaned once during our stay. The main buffet was not open during lunch, and other restaurants didn't have enough space and food variety.
Reverberations in a beach paradise
As an older couple, we planned on being live-in vacationers most of the time. Service and overall food quality were excellent, but the echos in hallways on into the early a.m. hours meant that the comfort level was not what if might have been. We had a great field trip with Sebert, our guide, to a working plantation, and for a younger, more noise tolerant clientele, this trip to Ocho Rios might indeed be just what these folks are looking for.
Amazing for the price
Really good place. Walk right out your room to 2 nice pools and a huge beach front. Water is very clear. We thought it was well worth the price.
Get what you paid for
We paid for a upgrade which included more options for dinner which were great, however, the jacuzzi tub that we paid for did not work. We didn't want to bother the hotel staff about the problem, but the room itself was beautiful.
The RUI disappointment
When traveling it's the "little" details that can make or break a nice vacation. To start with, there is a secret about the in-room safe. They don't tell you at check-in that you have to ask for the lock and the key. The room door key is a big metal key that didn't work half the time and the safe key didn't work half the time. No help with luggage when arriving or leaving. They need 4 times more employees to help all the people wandering around trying to figure things out. Standing in line for restrauants isn't fun either. No reservations and there is only one sit-down restrauant we could use. Found out we had the wrong color wrist band to qualify us to eat anywhere else. No pool side service for drinks. The glasses, and in some cases dishes just piled up all day. People were taking pictures of overflowing garbage cans around the pool and on the beach. Which attracted big birds. BUT, the sunshine was great. We discovered the "waiting list game" for restrauants by accident. There is no shampoo or lotion in the rooms and out king bed was 2 double beds made up separately and pushed together. The only restrooms pool side was inside a restrauant and when in an evening restrauant you had to go all the way to the bar and entertainment area. No security guards or management watching staff congregate and talk for hours. On our last morning, witnessed a young family with 3 kids struggling to clean up after a cereal bowl crashed to the floor. A lady from another table handed them some napkins and one server handed that some napkins. The mother went to change and the dad while holding the baby was trying to clean up shards of bowl and oatmeal while the other 2 kids stayed seated. Really? That's unacceptable. My spa treatments were the hi-lite of my 7 days thanks to Diana. We put our towels out and went for breakfast and they were taken. Yet the apple representative told us we didn't need to carry our "keys" around with us. Just leave your stuff on a chair and go do what you want. Never going back to Jamaica.
Great Place. Tough crowd of customers
Well worth staying at this resort great friendly service !

Firstly, before you book anything, THIS IS NOT A FIVE STAR HOTEL. The rooms are a dated in my opinion and there really isn't any wow factor here apart from the size. There is no room service, the TVs are old, the staff - although very polite - so not and will not go the extra mile. With that being said, I enjoyed my time here. The location is great. The hotel is close to most attractions and is also right on the beach. I'd advise an all inclusive package if you can. The unlimited drinks and food really do help make the holiday. For the drinkers, the mini bar is restocked every two days with beer, soft drinks and water and you also get four litre bottles of spirits (rum, something else, something and something else) in each room! There are two pools and three bars and lots to keep you entertained. We met with a lot of returning guests, so although a bit shabby this hotel makes up for it in other ways. Our rooms and the hotel in general were kept quite clean. I really liked the food and the different selections offered. I also liked the fact that food was available until 2am. I wouldn't stay here again as there are just too many nicer properties on the island I would like to try, but I didn't have any major complaints or gripes here. It was worth the money.
You get what you pay for....
Spent last week at this hotel here are the pros and cons.
Pros: *No matter where your room is located it's a short walk to the pools and beach, hotel is easy to navigate.
*Variety of food and you never need to make reservations even for dinner
*Martini and mojito nights
*A lot of entertainment, some of it is great and some is OK. The entertainment team put a lot of time and effort into their shows, check them out.
*No need for fancy clothes. Dress shorts and shirt for guys and dress shorts or sundresses for women for dinner is fine
*Rooms and public restrooms are clean, they are always cleaning. Bars are also pretty clean.
*Huge drink variety, you name it and they have it-- cocktail wise
*Beach area is big. Lots of chairs by pool and beach
*Jerk Hut is good, buffet by main pool is very good for lunch
*SteakHouse is excellent
*Some staff are fun and smile
*We felt safe
*Rooms need updating. Remember, you are not supposed to spend a lot of time in your room. You get what you pay for. Beds are old and hard. Bedding and window treatments are old.
*People- clean up a bit after yourselves! Cups all over the beach and pools attracts bees! I felt bad for staff trying to keep up cleaning up after you. If you get a new drink, take your old cup! AND pick up your own cig butts. The beach is not your ashtray.
*The beach is not raked beautifully every morning like other resorts we've been too.
*Some staff are not friendly. Some are OK. Housekeeping was the most friendly, be good to them. Entertainment staff are VERY friendly- they put their heart and sole in the job.
*The safe in room can be tricky to use
*We had no hot water for 2-4 hours
*Food is OK. Some of the things in the buffet look like it's been sitting to long. Example- noodles turning crispy under the hot lights.
*Only beer they have is Red Strip and Red Stripe light.
* Drinks are WEAK
*No coffee or micro in room if you bring instant coffee. They need to fix that so I can walk up to coffee on my balcony.
We travel a lot. You get what you pay for. We knew going in this was not a top notch fancy resort. Will we stay again? Not sure, the world is big lots of places to explore.
RIU- you have hard working staff. You need more staff at this resort to keep up the beach and pool area. PAY THEM BETTER! Take care of your employees and they will take care of you.
Good TImes, Good Vibes
Just came back from Riu Ochi and I am already suffering withdrawal. Despite the fact that the weather was grey and chilly I still had a great time. The grounds was lush and very scenic. The food was AMAZING, Fresh juices every morning, really nice presentations in the buffet. the beach was nice, the service was good, the music was on point. This is my third Riu I am visiting in JA and by far i like this one the most. You can tell the people who worked there enjoyed what they do and are friendly. The Riu fun team was 100% entertaining. They weren't annoying or in your face to get you to participate. They respected people's space and time which I appreciated. They have a foam party in the pool,, don't miss that!!
Jerk Hut- do not leave without eating there! By far the best jerk and I had in my life. The chef is a serious grill master. I agree with a previous comment to take him a cold one.
Now I don't want to be a downer but I want to be real... there were times were the shower was freezing and there was no hot water. Also there was a time where there was no pressure or water at all.. These are all temporary issues but annoying at times. Housekeeping kept forgetting to leave a full set of towels, so we would always have to call down and wait for them, which took a while.
Despite all of that, I had a great time and will return for sure.
Very nice relaxing time at the Club Hotel Riu Ocho Rios
This resort is very nice, the rooms are clean and comfortable. The staff are friendly and the location is right by the ocean. I would rate this at a 4-4.5 as it does not provide certain services that more expensive venues provide. However, our 14 day stay was comfortable, the food was very good and exposure to the beach and water was top rate.
Don't listen to all of the negative reviews!! This was my first time to Jamaica RIU but have stayed at their resorts in Mexico several times. This hotel is huge but beautiful. We stayed on the deluxe side with a ocean front room and the views were beautiful. The TV in our room was a flat screen so not sure what rooms have the old tv's but who is going to be in their room long enough to watch tv. It was quite a distance to walk to some of the restaurants but we made it and we're in our 50's and 60's. Food was good but could be improved. Breakfast was not the best and could use a lot of improvement but steaks were great in the steak house. I liked the Japanese restaurant because I love sushi but my girlfriend doesn't so she didn't enjoy it. It rained a lot when we were here but we had a blast anyways. Spent a lot of time at the pool bar and Savage the bartender was the best. We met a lot of friendly people from all over the world and would come back to this hotel in a heartbeat.
They do not have coffee in the rooms but you can go to the Sports bar and get coffee anytime. The Italian restaurant is open until 2:00 a.m. and I'm sorry if you're needing food after that time then hotdogs, popcorn and nacho's should be good enough.
There were a few unfriendly workers but we just smiled and said have a good day. They work hard and get paid very little and most of the time get treated like crap from the hotel guests. We tipped most of the workers and yes maybe they treated us better but I didn't mind tipping for good service. We tipped the restaurant servers at least $1 each meal and tipped the bartenders $1 each drink. Most were very appreciative but there were a few that were still rude so we just went to another bar or to another bartender. I have no complaints about room service. Yes, some days the room was not cleaned until later in the day but they have a lot of rooms to clean and we didn't care, we were either on the beach, in the pool or on an excursion.
We went to Dunns River Falls, Mystic Mountain and a day of shopping. Dunns River was beautiful. Take a taxi and pay at the gate it's much cheaper that way. We did the zip line at Mystic Mountain and it was a blast. First time for my girlfriend and she loved it and she's in her 60's. We took a 2 hour excursion into town to do some shopping and asked the bus driver if we could stay longer (cause who can do all their shopping in 2 hrs) and they said no problem. We shopped for around 4 1/2 hours, ate lunch downtown and visited with the locals at the outdoor markets.
I'm hoping to bring my family back here in 2019.
