My husband and I stayed at Barcelo Maya Tropical for 9 days and 8 nights --- we were very pleased with our stay! We enjoyed all the on-site activities there were to enjoy, the food/drinks, and the incredible pools and ocean (the beach was filled with beautiful palm trees and the water was so clear!). The coffee was amazing --- we just wished there was a better variety of desserts. We hope to come back again, though --- very romantic get away. :)

Love it

Stayed in the Tropical section for 7 nights with my boyfriend. Had a great time & would definitely visit this report again. It's beautiful, clean & the staff bends over backward to please you. THE LAYOUT: The resort is pretty big, with all 4 sections flowing into each other. There's lots of walking, so bring comfy shoes & band-aids for blisters. A resort double-decker bus takes you from the lobbies to the shopping mall within the resort, but that's the only form of resort transportation (you walk everywhere else; there's no golf cart type trolleys that travel around every few minutes like there is at other resorts; not a big deal...just helpful to know). The sections are covered by a walkway, which is nice in case it rains. By the way, take some strong bug spray! The mosquitos & gnats get rough in the late afternoon & really bad after dark! THE BEACH: Most areas are rocky, so take water shoes. Believe me, if you happen to step on a sea urchin, you'll be glad you did! Stay away from the large grouping of rocks as the undertow can draw you in quickly & put you on top of the coral on those rocks, cutting your skin. There's beautiful fish & a small reef, but just be careful & wear water shoes and/or fins when you snorkel. ROOMS: They're clean, but expect a little mildew in some corners/crevices if you look hard enough. After all, it's a VERY humid climate & this is to be expected. The floors are tile & kept clean, as is the bedding (although I always take a can of Lysol to spray down everything initially, including the tv remote). The beds are very hard in my opinion, but I'm use to a softer mattress at home. I've heard that you can ask for a mattress topper, but we didn't bother as I don't think it would've made much of a difference. There's also a stocked fridge in the room, but it doesn't get very cold...it's cool, but not COLD. It has soft drinks, beer, peanuts, OJ & bottled water. (There's also bottled water at the bars if you ask for it). The A/C was ok, but we prefer it to be much cooler. It was very, very humid, making it feel much warmer than 89 degrees. There's a ceiling fan in the room as well. You aren't able to adjust the thermostat on the A/C though. I just don't think the locals realize how hot it feels to those of us who don't live in that climate. After all, many of them wear long sleeves & don't turn up the A/C in the vehicles that carry us (unless you ask them to) because they're use to the humidity. FOOD & DRINKS: Let me start by saying that I'm a bit picky when it comes to food, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. The food is ok. It all obviously depends on personal taste, but they try to have something to appeal to everyone. I managed to find plenty to eat. Don't expect 5 star gourmet food in a buffet because it isn't going to happen. Can you imagine trying to please thousands of people from many different countries? That's a lot of taste buds to accommodate! My advice is to open your mind & try new things. You won't like absolutely everything, but you don't like all food at home either. Keep in mind that you're in another country & they're trying their best to appease you & make you come back. It ain't gonna taste like Mama made it! Some of the food in the ala cartes was better & it gave you a break from the buffet food which tends to be a bit repetitive. Make those ala carte reservations as soon as you check in because peak times fill up fast. SHOPPING: The shopping mall area has the usual tourist souvenirs & vendors, although you'll find better prices in town (like Playa del Carmen). You don't have to pay in pesos, but should at least know the exchange rate so you don't pay too much...because if you ask...well, you just showed that you don't know & the price might go up (there are simple to use exchange rate apps for your phone where you type in the peso amount & it converts to dollars). The actual "stores" along the interior of the mall are very expensive & we didn't see anyone making purchases there (for example, an Izod polo-type shirt was $108 American dollars! WOW!) TRAVELING TO "TOWN" (Playa del Carmen): There's a bit of a walk to the front of the resort where you can find either a regular taxi or a "collectivo". A collectivo is $2.40 per person each way & it's a type of public transportation (no one there takes American coins, so take plenty of $1 bills). It looks like a regular van, but stops often to let locals & tourists off/on. It is much cheaper than a taxi & therefore better in my opinion, if you don't mind all the stops. They'll drop you off in a certain area of PDC & you walk toward the beach/shopping area. When you want to leave, just go back to the same area where they let you out & you'll find many more Collectivos. Before you sit down, always tell the driver where you're going to make sure he's headed in that direction. OVERALL: Decide before you go, to not be overly critical & just enjoy yourself. You won't have every comfort of home, but if your home is that great, then why leave it in the 1st place? You can still be aware of your surroundings, yet have an open mind & embrace new things, meet people from other cultures & have experiences that you wouldn't normally have at home. Mexicans & others there who work in the tourist industry are just trying to earn a living. Granted, you can be taken advantage of if you aren't careful, but knowing what to expect & how to react goes a long way towards making great vacation memories. Isn't that what you're after anyway? Catering to tourists is their life & they try very hard, so please be courteous & understanding of that. There's nothing wrong with offering suggestions for improvement, but don't be rude about it. Hope you have a great time like we did!

Fabulous
