Barcelo's beach was great.
ANGELA S.
Apr 25 2018
A little bit of a shaky start when you get off the transportation van and are told you are not on the hotel check in list, but they guided us to the premium club check in since I had my Apple Vacation papers and got us a room(turns out it wasn't the right room and everyone had us listed in the room next door all week including the check out people). We were supposed to have a king bed but ended up with two doubles and found out our actual room we were supposed to have next door with the king was empty all week......bummer but not much to be done on the last day when you find out......The maids were good overall but didn't make any extra effort....floors were a little sandy a couple of nights. The wait staff was hit or miss some were wonderful and some you wondered if they would ever show up with your drink or to even take a drink order....bars were the same way. Loved the beach itself which is what we went for and loved the coves and snorkeling and sea life. The shows weren't all that but we did see one good one. I am a picky eater and always found something but like always I wound up eating the same things over and over. We would definitely return and next time I will check and double check I'm getting the bed I asked for before I go to my room.

Musty AC transferred smell to clothes and luggage
JESSE G.
Apr 18 2018
This was my third time to Barcelo Maya. I must have just gotten a bad room. The AC had a moldy and musty smell. As you spent time in the room, you'd get used to it, but when we got home, I was able to smell how bad it actually was when I opened my luggage. The room was far too humid. The mattresses also must have had some type of plastic liner under the sheets as you'd wake up sweating if under the covers. If you pulled them back, you'd freeze now matter the AC setting. Just a bit strange. Don't take this as me being sour. I thoroughly enjoyed this stay, but I don't think if I go again, that I would accept such a smell again.

I will never ever have another person travel with my family again. I'm sure they have an ear full for anyone that will here. It's was a mediocre trip. Buffet, snack bar food was less then mediocre as well. The best meals we have were at the A la carte places and we could only get into 3 of them because it was so booked up during this week. Of Course we traveled at the most busy time of the year, but lack of shade on the beach is an issue along with people securing their pool side shade the night before by holding towels out for the entire day is a bit ridiculous too. That was very frustrating. The low end alcohol made many of us sick through out the week. One of our girls did find a blue pill in the bottom of her drink that she received directly from the bar tender. The mother went nuts on the guy. The kids received rashes and sores all over their bodies from the nasty condom broken cup filled pool near the tropical all week....It was shockingly surprising how the resort DJ's encouraged this behavior and mayhem all week long. Its was a close to Sodom and Gomorrah as I could describe. Marijuana and drugs were sold out in the open and as freely as people wanted. The bar tenders making out with girls all over the bar area and having an open party in front of parents and families. I and my friends chose to stay near the Colonial pool where we felt it was keep separate from the busyness of the mayhem...but will never return to this resort again The workers are kind and work hard. Hardest workers I've seen, but Spring Break is not a time of year I ever want to travel during ever again.

My Experience
DORIS F.
Mar 07 2018
My room was very nice but they didn't have any wash cloths. I asked for wash cloths but they said they didn't have any. Another person asked for wash cloths and were handed 2 of them. After that they were told they didn't have any. I think they should have wash cloths... At the pool, they kept running out of light beer. This seems odd when they have several tappers. These things didn't spoil my vacation but is an area where the hotel could use improvement. The entertainment SUCKED. It was so boring that we all decided they planned it that way so people would go to their room! Which we did. It was a great vacation and we were very pleased with Apple Vacations - next time...new destination.

Needs Improvement

Feb 13 2018
This was our 4th trip to the Barcelo and we were disappointed in the attitude of the bar staff. Unless they was you with a wad of cash in your hand, they would basically ignor you or take a long time to wait on you even thought they were not busy. Also, they no longer serve premium liquors; only the cheap stuff unless you pay extra. The food buffets were O.K., but pretty much the same thing every day whereas they used to have a different variety every day. Last, BUT not least was our check-in upon our arrival. There were only two clerks at the desk (about 5 PM) and about 30 people waiting to check in; we stood in line for 1 hr. 20 min. This was just unacceptable, therefore we will be choosing another hotel on the beautiful Riviera Maya for future trips.

3rd Time's a Charm
JEFFREY A.
Jan 17 2018
Apple Vacation provides great service from booking to return. Hotel property is mid-sized, easy to navigate, and has all the amenities one would expect. It is not the highest of luxury, but it is absolutely wonderful. The pool area is gorgeous, but the pool water is not heated; winter pool water is very cold. Ocean/beach is also beautiful, and there are plenty of chairs. The beach is a bit rocky and difficult to enter in many spots, but the water is calm and lovely once you're in. Water shoes are recommended for easier entry/exit. Evening entertaining is sub-par; almost laughable most nights. Just go because it's fun... not because it's trying to be a Broadway knock-off.

Ok its nice you can use 4 resort areas, so for sure its big but there was not so much to see... most customers was families with kids. Bars was empty same with pools. Pools water was freezing! Ocean was much warmer than pools. Food was pretty good in buffee but always same, they change nothing. A la carte... japanese one suck. I wanted to cry when they overcooked tuna, lobster, swordfish and didnt make duck skin crispy. Italian restaurant was good. Staff is not so nice, they dont really talk with you but laugh behind your back making fun of you. Bed in room is rock hard.

Do not come to this resort. First of all booked a room for 2 males was given 1 king bed and no option to switch to a double bed room. Spoke with manager and nothing could be done for the whole week. Food was horrible too. Ate off the resort except for breakfast.

Food was always just OK

Friendly staff, great pools. But the food was always hit or miss. It always seemed like it was missing just a bit of taste. It was not all that. We stayed at the tropical. One of the nights a lady behind the buffet at the tropical accepted a tip. When I asked for tacos and I said that is to much onion, she removed the onion with that same hand she accepted the money. Nasty.

Family vacation at Barcelo Maya Tropical

We stayed for 14 days in April. We had a really bad experience with check-in. We booked a room at Colonial but we were living at Tropical indeed. Thier machine has not accepted our cards. We tried 3 cards from different banks. The buffet food was the same day by day. The room has not been cleaned as we wanted. They forgot to leave the second bathrobe. Nevertheless, I left tips on a bed every morning. We did not like La Trattoria Italian restaurant. I have visited Italy and I know what the Italian cuisine is. The food has been prepared by people who have never been in Italy. Lots of noise because of beach wedding ceremonies that have been performing every night. Lots of Mexican people with one day pass who have been as attendees of different conferences. They usually used buffets and the beach area that were crowded because of them. Barcelo has a room service which is not free. I spent 15 min to explain why I took jelly to my husband who was in the room and been sick. People who have a food allergy please be careful. My husband has been really sick eating shrimps that were cooked together with calamari at the Tropical buffet. There are a couple of good moments. We enjoyed eating at La Fuente Spanish restaurant. I'd recommend trying cold cuts, gazpacho and for desert papaya with honey and rum. Also, our room has been very close to the beach. We enjoyed having a massage at U Spa.

Great stay - some room for improvement

We are repeated guests (4th visit since 2011). We stayed in April 2018, for 11 days. This was our second time in the Tropical section since 2011 and although we loved our overall stay, there were a few things that I thought could be improved. First, the good : Service was great all through our stay. Check-in was quick and most of my room requests were met, except the floor. We requested Yucatan building, 3rd floor, middle of the building and got 2nd floor. Rooms were ready 20 minutes after our arrival giving us time to book some restaurants while we waited. We ate most of our meals at the buffet and beach grill and food was varied and always to our liking. We went to the Caribe buffet to get more variety and walk a little more and to see Hassim who was our waiter on a previous visit. The pools were clean and not too crowded. The kids enjoyed the kiddy pool/Barcy water park. As for the beach, we usually prefer walking to the South section of the resort as we find the water calmer there. It's less rocky and there were more chairs in the shade to settle. The "less good" : Last time we stayed at the Tropical was in 2011. We could definitely tell the difference 7 years made. While the grounds are very well maintained and we could see hard work to keep the buildings good looking, it was also clear to us that this section of the resort is getting tired and is in need of renos and some upgrades. We noticed a leak from the ceiling in the dining room buffet and we had a leak from the motion detector in the ceiling of our own bathroom twice. Toilets around the swimming pools area weren't level and some had malfunctioning flush buttons. The drinks were also a bit of a lesser quality than on our previous visits. I'm aware the provider was changed and maybe that would explain why. The fruity flavours didn't taste as good (especially Mango, which used to be my favourite and I couldn't palate anymore) Now for the very good : the service and some special mentions. The Caribe buffet is worth a visit for breakfast and lunch to meet Hassim. He is a real gem on this resort. He provides outstanding service and remembered our names after 2 years and our preference of coffee! It was worth the walk, just to see him and have a chat with him. Gabriela, Jonathan and Marco Polo from the water sports area helped organize a Hobie-Cat experience for our family. Marco was our "captain" and was very helpful and patient with the kids and adjusted the pace quickly after my daughter got scared. Denise at guest services in the Yucatan building was very helpful and courteous to deal with. Aide Martinez at guest services was also very nice and helpful to order medication for us when my father in law had an ailment. Finally, on our last night, Herlinda at the Tropical buffet went out of her way to find us cheesecake to celebrate a special anniversary with my family. Overall, it was a great stay and I know the resort takes the reviews seriously, which is why I point out the areas of improvement. We are big fans of this place and we recommend it to anyone who wants to visit the Mayan Riviera.

Very Nice and Large Resort.

We stayed for a week mid April 2018, this is a very large resort with much to offer that there is little need to leave the resort for activities. The workout gym is super large and has many machines so there is never a wait to get a good sweat worked up. We stayed in the Tropical section and visited the other buffets during our stay and enjoyed every place we visited. The Plaza shopping area is nice and the mall is a great place to visit some other shops and Strikers sports bar is a good stop also. The grounds are impeccable and the staff is hard working and friendly, always a smile and
