Great place to stay
I'm pretty new to all inclusive resorts. This is the second resort I've been to. I was happy until I realized that there was another Riu resort about a 1/4 mile down the beach (Riu Sun) that was much better then the resort I was at. I assumed the 5 star apple rating indicated quality level not hotel satisfaction. Riu Club resort I stayed at didn't have premium alcohol. No cocktail waiter/waitress. Lesser food options. Also, they didn't have bees throughout the property. Having so many bees around the beverages one must look at their drink first to make sure no bees have fallen in... This makes the other resort appear much cleaner (Riu Sun, I believe). Staff was very nice but I wouldn't stay here again. I would stay at the other resort 1/4 mile away.
Rui Negril - Wouldn't stay again
When we checked this option, there were 5 apples with the reviews. We read the reviews and they were basically positive. There will always be a negative one in the bunch. We have stayed at all inclusive resorts before so knew what to expect. Our biggest disappointment was the alcohol. It was well liquor at best, and when you over-pour bad liquor it just make the drink worse. We ate at all of the restaurants, they were average. The pool closed at 10pm which was a bummer as well as the pool with the swim up bar was dirty. One of the 4 of us got in - and it was a quick in/out - didn't stay in. The rooms were decent to look at, however, the toilet literally clogged every day. There was atleast an inch or so of standing water in the shower every morning. I didn't bring shampoo/conditioner - That way I save space in my luggage - well, this was a shampoo/conditioner/bodywash combo that was really, really bad! The bar soap made me break out - yes, we purchased shampoo, conditioner and body wash. We didn't drink anything in the mini-bar, again, when it is bad liquor you just stay away. The bed was comfortable, however, the pillows stunk horribly. I'm guessing that they do not wash the cases - we put them on the balcony. Somehow there was a throw pillow in there from a couch from who knows where - I used that. We did use the paddle boards and also the kyack. The staff was very friendly, they are just in a situation where no matter how hard they work, their surrounds are sub-par. We did walk the beach and found that there is another Riu - we went and checked it out. It had all premium liquor and the food looked spectacular. Our friends that we went with had dinner there one night, they said it put ours to shame. The food was good and well prepared. What we had was your basic buffet. I wish Apple would have told us that there was another hotel that had better amenities - we realize it would have been more, however, we would have paid it. As an afterfact we found out we could have gone to the other resort for $10/day - it would have been well worth it - their pool was open at night, their food and alcohol was better and they had more entertainment. This was a learning experience for Jamacia - the people were awesome, the surroundings just were not.
Power outages daily, numerous times. Also, at least three times a day the fire alarms would start screeching. The beach was being dug up with a backhoe. The food was only so-so but after reading reviews about the great jerk chicken served on the beach we were excited to try it. It was closed the entire 7 days we were there. No explanations given. Try to order drinks and the bartenders try to sell you weed, Cuban cigars, etc. Have stayed with RIU resorts in th past and expected more. You ned to change your Apple ratings of this hotel to 3. (maybe)
Staff was amazing. Very friendly, fun, safe environment.
Apple Bait & Switch
Apple left me in the wind. After booking with them for the past 12 years they had me setup for the worst room. Not my ocean view that we discussed. I calles immediately to get this worked out. I was told that they would call me back that night. That never happened, not even an email. I went and dropped 500 mpre and moved to the room I should have been in to start with. 1.5 days later I calling Apple again, this time I did speak with a rep and he was useless. I dont write reviews normally but people should know what there getting for thier money. I will never book with Apple again. PS Apple records the call when you boom a trip.It should be easy for them to truley know wjats going on yet they act like a small business when an issue is raised. The lack of caring, action, and follow up was very off putting. Never again Apple 12 year customer out.
Great Beach Vacation Place
professional but ok . Only real complaint we have was the restaurants that were listed in the advertising as requiring women wear dresses with sleeves , men long pants etc , were selective as to who and how they enforced it. They didn't allow men in with shorts , but did allow women in with shorts , capris etc. Had we known this , we wouldn't have decided to pack so much. Other than that , place was very nice and might go back.
I never took a trip to Jamaica and I have to say this resort and entire trip was excellent. Never had to wait, Apple took care of all the transportation and times of events and it was outstanding. Only thing I would change was I wasn't aware resort was 2 hours from airport, but that is purely my fault for not doing more research prior to booking trip.
I should have known to ignore the negative reviews of the Riu. This is my third time in Jamaica, my first in Negril. The bus ride is 1.5 hours away from the airport, which wasn't great but no problems. The resort was wonderful, as well as all the staff. The food at the buffet as well as all the restaurants (I tried all of them) were excellent. The Asian was my favorite and it was nice not having to make reservations like I have in the past. Had no trouble getting into any of the restaurants. I'm a wine drinker and the wine was okay, but there were plenty of other options to drink. The workers, from the front desk to housekeeping were wonderful, could not have been nicer. The gym was one of the nicer ones I have been to on a resort. It is also nice that you have wifi all over the resort. I used the spa for a pedicure and would definitely recommend it. Ophelia was great, very sweet and did a wonderful job. My only complaint would be on Apple. We were told we were getting a resort credit and thought we could use it for anything but it was broken up for different activities and spa services. Not idea, and didn't use any of them. I would definitely recommend this resort.
Positive & fun
My family of 4 had a great time at RIU Negril. The wait staff, housekeeping & bartenders were just great! They did their job well and provided a great experience. We enjoyed most of the activities the resort offered and enjoyed those. There were 6-10 guys roaming the beach all the time, offering rides, souveniers, or "other" things and that got a little old. But they took a no and did not pester you repeatedly. (Just asked EVERY day) The resort was very clean. The food was good and we loved trying the different restaurants, only eating at the buffet once. RIU Negril is situated between two foresty type areas, so there were lots of mosquitos and little biting black bugs. The resort did spray each morning, but we had a lot of rain so that seemed to bring them out from what we were told. Overall it was a great experience and we would stay at RIU again.
would go back for the entertainment however would like to try other hotels
Our vacation was amazing however I do have some issues. While the service and entertainment was AMAZING the food was subpar. Two out of four resturants served almost the same exact food. The same steak and the same salmon. While I did like the buffet feel for some of the restaurants I felt they should have been more Restaurant like because their is a main buffet so really no need for that. Also I recommend to provide more food options on the beach. The jerk chicken was amazing first and second day but got sickening after that. They should have added jerk pork, or any other options on the beach. Also when we bought some of the extra trips and everything it said it comes with it didn't. We did not go to Ricks Cafe even though we bought the RICK cafe cattermen. They did provide us with extra snorkeling time which was ok however we had free snorkeling services and we really wanted to see Ricks cafe and it was an extra 40$ cab ride. I just felt like they should have accomadated maybe give us a free taxi ride etc. We paid over 100$ for the trips and while we enjoyed our time definitely felt like we missed out. Also one HUGE issue I had was the drop off service at the end of the vacation. Our plan left at 10:55 and apparently the ONLY bus available was at 545 am. We had to wait FIVE HOURS at a closed airport when we could have had breakfast or one last swim on the beach or pretty must anything else other then sleeping at the airport for five hours. We also saw people from our hotel come two hours later so we were confused on why we were told there was only one bus. Due to some of this issues I feel like when I stay in Negril I will definitely venture out of the hotel because there are more options in food, actives etc. Also with all the hotels on that strip you guys should have your own nightclub. In a lot of the Dominican resorts have discos on the resort etc. A lot of people end of venturing out to make the experience greater and we will definitely do it next time!
We enjoyed our hotel so much, we talked about staying at the same hotel in other locations. It was a wonderful hotel! Very impressed by everything!

Great first all-inclusive experience!
This was my first all-inclusive stay. I had read some of the negative reviews but after my stay, it became obvious it was just nitpicking. My friend and I arrived in the evening on Christmas Eve. We were swiftly checked-in, although the live performance going on made it difficult to hear the staff at the check-in desk. We were in the first building which made for a nice walk to the main facilities. I was expecting more toiletries in the bathroom, but I always bring my own products (I like collecting and donating the toiletries).
The complaints about the buffet are absurd! There was an insane amount and variety to choose from! The only negative I have to say about the food is that when we went to the sit down restaurants for dinner, the fish I ordered was overcooked and therefore dry. As well, the service as the steakhouse was extremely slow. Otherwise, the staff were pleasant and helpful and everything else I ate was delicious. Also, the jerk hut was incredible!
The daily entertainment at the pool and in the evening was great! The entertainment staff were just wonderful. Very friendly and clearly love their jobs. A few male staff members were a bit flirtatious with my friend and I -- although it's not super professional, you can't blame them for expecting single tourists to be easy. We made sure to keep our boundaries with those ones.
Finding a lounge chair usually wasn't a problem at the beach, although lots of people claim theirs with towels and disappear for the day. The beach was clean and beautiful. I did get eaten alive by sand fleas and mosquitos, mostly at night. As for the beach sellers/peddlers, the complaints about them being aggressive are exaggerated too -- they're just trying to make a living. A polite, chill yet firm "No thanks, I'm good dude" worked.
Massive shout out to Rushelle at the front desk who was wonderful with setting us up with drivers when we needed and just being super friendly and always willing to help! We never got to say goodbye to her because she was off-shift when we checked out. I'd love to get in contact with her though if there's a way! She said she was interested in studying in Canada and I'd love to help her out!
The Riu was definitely a great first taste of all-inclusives for me and I would definitely return in the future for another stay!
Stayed here Jan 8-15/18 and had the best service ever. what a fantastic staff they have employed at this resort: so friendly and helpful. We had 5 days of rain unfortunately but we made the best of it. The second night here we had a sunami warning which was very scary but thanks to having free wifi courtesy of Sunwing, we were able to keep in close touch with our family back home in Canada and the warning was over in a few hours. The only downfall I would say is that we didn’t have enough sun. Highly recommend taking a catamaran tour to Ricks cafe, it was a lovely ride and the snorkelling was super fun. I would not recommend the evening boat ride over in Falmouth as it took a long time to get there and if you don’t pack a lunch to take with you, it’s almost 10 pm when you get back and you’ll be starving to death and will most likely miss the buffet. I found the shopping on the resort very good and reasonable. The jerk chicken served daily on the beach was the absolute best. I have a walking disability and emailed the hotel directly and requested a ground floor room and we were in the first building on the ground floor which was fantastic for me.
The staff here is absolutely the best. We have travelled quite a bit and I would rate the staff here as one of the best ever! We would highly recommend buying the Club MoBay for quicker processing at the airport, it’s well worth the money, especially if you have any kind of disability.
the hotel is nice, staff is very friendly. Was disappointed with buffets, the food was always the same not much of a verity. The evening show were good but to loud. did not like that while walking on the beach we were always ask if we wanted to smoke.
Well just let me start off by saying every place you travel to in life is what you make it. There is some very bad reviews on this property but this was not the case with the 12 of us that were there.
Rooms were nice & clean we all had ocean front building 2 & it was close enough & far enough to all the restaurants & shows. & the beach wright out your front door so was the beach bar which was fantastic & so were the people running it. Only down fall no water pressure but not a big deal to us.
Food was good I am a Executive Chef & found the food to be as good as any other Riu I have been to, I have been in Riu,s all over the Caribbean. We loved the jerk chicken place even though it was geared to the masses. Not as authentic as I am used to as I have been all over Jamaica & had much better at road side places.
The hotel & staff were for the most part very nice activity people the life of the party all the time. Some of the bartenders need to loose some of the attitude. They need to remember there job is there clients & with out them no job. Just need a little more positive & attentive attitude adjustment.
Grounds were so beautiful and very well kept, the disco needs to go back in a more inclosed environment as it was loud & kept a lot of guests up.
Pools were for most part ok we spent some time at all of them but mostly at the one by are building it was great had a view of the ocean kind of like are Owen pool.
Over all the 12 of us had a fantastic time & would go back in a hart beat that being said they need a airport in Negril because you lose pretty much a day traveling to & from hotel.
In closing thanks for a great Christmas party with friends and family.
Just returned January 20, 2018. It is rated 5* but I would say it is closer to a 4*. We had a nice time but it rained everyday. I was there 15 years ago and remember it being a lot nicer. The beach was murky and mucky to walk on with lots of seaweed. I love the beach and really didn't enjoy this one. It was a beautiful crystal clear beach 15 years ago. So,I'm not sure if the earthquake in hunduras had something to do with it.
The rooms smelled so musty and the pillows were really smelly!!! I should of asked for new ones. Other than that, the rooms are very nice. We were in room 2028 and it was a great location.
There is lots of food to choose from and the churros are delicious!!!!! Jerk chicken shack is amazing. I could of lived on them. Desserts aren't great. Same thing every night. We loved our server, Cecilia. She was so sweet. We only did one al a carte as you have to line up way in advance to get into them. I think they need to change this way, it just doesn't seem to work.
Drinks are yummy. Make sure you try a dirty banana. Oh how I miss them already!!! They don't come around and take drink orders like most resorts but we are ok with that.
They do have sand fleas but we weren't bothered as it rained every day and the sand was so damp, the sand fleas didn't like it.
We hired Leroy Lawrence, the taxi driver, to take us to Ricks Cafe and a bit of shopping. He took us to a store where we could get all our souvenirs, alcohol, vanilla, etc.
