Pros: 1. Apple vacation representative on-site all day. 2. Beach was well-maintained and clean. 3. Room was old but clean. 4. Entertainers were doing their best. 5. Convenient location of hotel. Cons: 1. Pool was cold and hot-tub was not even warm enough! 2. Only 4 small (8 person max) elevators for such a huge hotel, long waits times. 3.So many food options but quality was average. 4. Service at restaurants needed attention. 5. Very few pool-side seats get good sunshine due to main building covering the sun. 6. Inside the restaurant there was always a burnt oil smell, not good enough ventilation. 7. Hotel has very old design and spa is located very far to main spots.

My wife likes to experience staying in different hotels, so she is really picky about returning to same hotels, but she would be happy to return to this one. In fact we are coming back next year.

Seeing that this was our 3 visit to this hotel, we were disappointed that the services weren't as good as they use to be. The pool had bugs and leftover sunscreen floating at the top of the water, the renovations missed the mark on trying to give it a modern feel. It looks rather cheap and poorly designed. The guestroom smelled like a sewer. The roof needs to be repaired as we were on the Annex Building on top floor (6th floor). It rained during the evening which then leaked into our guestroom setting off the alarm which then leaked orange water down onto the nightdtand and bed that we were sleeping in. We shared with the staff what happened, we can back and they put a bathroom towel over the nightstand and changed our sheets. Lastly, the last morning we were there, we saw a cockroach crawling on the floor and up the wall. We shared with staff at check out and they thanked us but didn't seemed concerned. The Riu Cancun was a special place as my husband and I met there, married there and sadly will not be returning there after this last experience. On a positive, staff was friendly. Fidel in the Italian restaurant was AWESOME!

This place is great. Even with a three year old. All the fun you want can be had. Visit the RIU Cancun. If your on the edge, just jump. It's a great place. Food, fun in the sun, night time fun also. It was perfect for what I was looking for/needed. Thank you riu, we loved it

Albert and Cesar at the front desk are amazing and very helpful, Gil in the dining areas took care our our entire 16 person party daily and made sure we had what we needed. The pool crew and entertainment was breath taking and fabulous. Gabriella who signed our entire crew up for excursion really did a wonderful job we had an amazing life experience. Gilberto who assisted with our bags and loading us on the shuttle also put the cherry on top of our visit.

We were exceptionally disappointed in Apple's ranking of the Riu Cancun as a 4 star hotel. The pool area was dirty, the food was not good, and the drinks were terrible (too sugary and low quality alcohol). The buffet food was good, and we opted to eat here most nights, but the restaurants did not have quality food. The entertainment staff was delightful, as was bartender Carlos and Server Marlene in the buffet area. The rooms were small, sheets were scratch, towels were very dingy, and the hotel looks very used/dated. This was my first vacation with Apple Vacations and I will NEVER work with Apple Vacations again given the rating of this hotel. Not pleased at all. Towels were rarely available, pool and pool area were dirty (drinks lying around, limes on the grounds, wrappers everywhere, and the pool with the sims up bar was disgusting - I would never set a toe in there!). Not pleased with Apple Vacations or the Riu Cancun

The Riu Cancun resort was the best resort we have stayed at! We went on a couples trip and all 4 of us enjoyed each aspect of this trip. There was something for everyone every day. Staff was wonderful and accommodating, the rooms were great, the beach was amazing! The food in every restaurant was delicious, we were very impressed! The only small "problem" (if you want to call it that) is that we wished the pool with the swim up bar was cleaner. The other pools were great, but it was as if the staff didn't bother to clean the pool with the bar. Other than that minor detail we will definitely return..

Very clean place! Everyone was real nice and helpful! The only thing I didn't like was the drinks that they gave at poolside and the restraunts were very watered down. Was better off just going back to the room and using the liquor from the mini bar. Overal though it wasn't a very enjoyable resort.

This was a family trip, ages 18-60. The hotel staff were great, from the moment we checked in to the minute we left. Very attentive and courteous! John, the Apple rep was very nice and always available to help with questions. From where to shop, to what to eat and what excursions to go on! 5 starts for sure! i will return!

This was the first time I've ever been to a hotel without room service, that is a huge inconvenience. The other issues we had were having to do with calling multiple times for towels to be brought to the room, drinks to be refilled in the mini bar and then getting the drinks wrong, the toilet broke and I took me calling three times to get someone to come fix it and finally the Apple representative (John Milner) sold us a package that included parasailing which never was included (which was the selling point and my family expected to do that and were very excited about it)!! After we purchased the package another guest came up and spoke to us about how John had lied to another guest and then about what was included in their excursion. We didn't really believe them until it happened to us during the booze cruise on the catamaran where the boat captain didn't mention a single thing about it and we didn't even see the platform to parasail from on the boat. When we spoke to John about it he said the captain said it was unsafe to do it but it was completely clear and calm water when we were out. Just because of this bad experience it has me doubting apple representative and if I can trust another one if I book with you again.

Ok the check in was very Quick, In fact the girl that checked us in Yamilex was very accommodating she let us have our room a hour early. We went up to our room and forgot to tell the bell boy so we came back down and he was waiting there to bring it up. Very fast service . the room was clean and well stocked fridge and liquor dispenser.We ate at the Ittalian restaurant the first night the food was great as was the service. All the places to eat were great. the selection of food was amazing with a lot of verity. the service all throu out the resort was great.Big thanks to Rafiel the lobby bar tender he always had a kind word and a cold drink, Also to Yamilex for all her help.I would stay there again in a heart beat. The only bad thing was the shows at the theater went 5 times and 4 were all in Spanish a lot of people I talked to said they did not understand a thing as a lot only speak English. so I think they could fix that. the last night was a AC/DC and guns and roses cover band they were great. So all in all this is a great place. So recommend people to go there and enjoy the great beach and blue water, also lots a pool choices. oh yeah they have a hot tub but not hot just luke warm.

I strongly debated between 3 or 4 stars for this but after weighing up the pros and cons, it came down to 3. Rooms - we had an AWFUL view and I mean awful, we asked to change from floor 2 and the lady at reception said this was possible 3 days into our holiday but would be moved to a room with no view still. Asked for upgrade options and she informed us there was nothing available yet others in our hotel were moved to sea view rooms without any trouble. Rooms are spacious, can't fault that but they do need a bit of a touch up. On arrival we did notice a damp smell as mentioned in other reviews but we kept our aircon on all the time and the smell went after the first night. Iron and ironing board, walk-in shower, small hairdryer but really good, free safe and plenty of wardrobe space. Our cleaner was brilliant, we tipped her every 3-4 days as she done such a good job. Food/Drink - The buffet is repetitive, although there is plenty of options, it is pretty similar on a daily basis for breakfast, lunch and dinner and nothing to write home about. We tried the a la carte restaurants which were much nicer - the steak and Japanese were our favourites and we returned to these twice. However, you do need to get down there early to get a table. Service in all restaurants was excellent. We only tipped in a la cartes because they are serving food and drinks to you. Drinks are ok - LOTS of choice but the beer and wine weren’t overly great however, there is a wide range of spirits and cocktails - you only have to ask for specific drinks or if you wish to change the spirit in a cocktail. Raphael in the lobby bar was a credit to the hotel, this is open daily until midnight, good for conversation as it is very quiet or little music being played - sometimes nice to get away from the noise. There is a Pacha which opens at 11pm - late and the sports bar is open 24 hours. The snacks in the sports bar are microwave burgers and they have a few sandwiches and a bit of fruit but wasn't overly impressed with that. Pool/Beach area: There is a 'loud' pool but it's all fun and games, really good laugh watching the entertainment team get people up for the activities and provide some giggles. I wouldn't say this is a 18-30 type hotel despite other reviews, there was plenty of families there and a range of ages. There is a quiet pool which is nice and calm if you do not wish to be around the music etc. The hotel is VERY shaded, it's hard to get sun spots around the pool, one of the reasons why I haven't rated this a 4 star is the sun bed issue. There are only a few which get the sun all day and every morning these were all reserved. We were down at 6.30am one morning and towels on every single one! One day we managed to squeeze two beds in and some of those that were reserved didn't have people on them until lunch time which was a bit of a p-take - anyway, we spoke to people who said they had been tipping to get these beds reserved. Beach - beautiful and the left side by the buffet restaurant gets sun all day. Some parts of the sea have rocks so just bear that in mind if you have young children, if you move along slightly then there are parts which hardly have any. Location, excursions and additional – Location is brilliant, there is a big supermarket across the road should you need anything (much cheaper than hotel shop), the bars are not too far – 5 min walk. Excursions we booked some through TUI and some through the ScrubaDive at the hotel. Now although TUI and a little more expensive – they are better!!! Much more for what you pay, we was really disappointed by the Scruba excursions. If you go out at night, please be careful of the police, they tried numerous times to get tourists into the cars where you are told you pay up £100 or straight to the cells – it happened to a number of people in the hotel and a few times when we walked back they tried to get us in there (we were literally just walking home). A lot of people will offer you ‘party extras’ as you walk around the streets, but you just have to say no and they leave you be. Overall, I would not return to this hotel.

Me and my friend chose Riu Cancun to celebrate her birthday, which was on the day of our arrival. I e-mailed the hotel about the special occasion and asked if they can do a little note or something for my friend. At check in we got a room on the 3rd floor, they said it was an upgrade because of the occasion. Well I can't imagine what was the basic room like if this the upgrade. The room was smelling of damp, there was no hot water in the evening and the the sink was blocked. We also received a call at 3 am from the reception, it was a mistake, we had a hard time falling back asleep. The next day we asked for another room maybe a bit higher and without the smell and water issue. We got a room on the 15th floor, beautiful view, nice smell and finally hot water, other than that the exact same room and decor. A few days later I asked reception why my friend didn't receive any birthday note or something from the hotel as I sent an e-mail previously. He said we got the room upgrade for the occasion. It seems like RIU hotels can't treat it's costumers as individuals, second time that I chose RIU hotel for an occasion and 2nd time that they failed to do anything about it. Spending our first night in an awful room that they class as an upgrade I don't think is appropriate. I would not choose any RIU hotel again to celebrate special occasion. On the positive side, the hotel is nice and clean, the staff is kind and respectful, the food was good, I really enjoyed the Japanese and Kulinarium a la carte restaurants, very good food and service.

Great resort with very helpful and friendly staff. Would definitely visit again and stay here. Water was beautiful, food was good. Breakfast had such a variety at the buffet and also offered made to order omelettes and other hot items. Nightly entertainment was great. Drinks were watered down but free.

Fabulous hotel. Been twice and love it. Lots going on and great food. Shirt walk to beach but even water aerobics in the sea. You can use the Yucatan hotel too across the road by the beach so it's GREAT. We found all the restaurants were brilliant and all the hard have local as well as international drinks. The are a lot of Americans at certain times of year who are a little loud but it didn't spoil our fun. Would definitely recommend his hotel to anyone. We love the Riu hotel group, you are always guaranteed a certain standard and they never disappoint.
