The staff was great and the hotel was one of the better ones in Negril. I was disappointed that I paid for an oceanview and when I asked for a second or third flor rom, I was given a partial view overlooking the dining area.
When were staying there, the GM's were there looking things over I guess. I am a server in the US and I know how we handle situations there. I happened upon on of the big shot chefs, assuming the GM chef as he was not from Jamaica, talking down to the chef working behind the pasta bar right in front of the guests. I didn't feel that this was appropriate behavoir at all. That could have been handled out of the sight of the guests and in a different place. Really made me angry.
Girls Trip 2017
I truly can't express my sincere gratefulness of this trip. Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, from the booking to the food to the staff to the room was absolutely beyond any of my wildest dreams! I can't say enough good things about the entertainment staff of this hotel. They were the most hard working people I've ever met! We so enjoyed everything we experienced! I can't stop talking about it! We will certainly be back to this location sooner than later!
Our family had a great time on vacation. The staff was very friendly and helpful. It was evident that the employees fully understood and embraced the corporate culture. On one occasion my husband and I stepped on a piece of broken glass in the pool. The life guard quickly attended to our cuts and another one immediately entered to pool to inspect for further glass. The whole situation was taken care of in less than five minutes. I would definitely recommend Riu resorts and Apple Vacations.
Overall the hotel needs a makeover. It is not comparable to the 3 other Riu Palaces I have stayed at. I found the new policy of no reservations for ala carte restaurants frustrating. Dinner became a cattle call and totally unorganized. I was unaware of this policy when scheduling the trip My biggest complaint was the total lack of enforcement of Jamaica's no smoking policy. I had to move chairs constantly at the pool, There was frequent and very open use of marijuana at the pool despite many complaints to management. It appeared no one was in charge. On a positive note the wait staff in the restaurants were wonderful especially Mario and Damion.
Can't wait to return!
Very satisfied, my first all inclusive, can't wait to go back, excellent service and staff, food selection is great, food quality was decent, beach was excellent, pools were good. My only complaint was how one had to line up for dinner in a restaurant and the vendors on beach some were aggressive, otherwise excellent place!!!
Everything was great but...
Food was good and could always find something to eat even if it was only the vegetables and the fruit. Entertainers were extremely talented but the shows were not my style. Only went to swimming pool twice and bother times the drunks were out of control. Enjoyed the beach so much more.
Awesome vacation again
Third time here all with apple vacations. Yes we will go with them again
2017 Spring Break
We stayed at the RIU Paradise in Negril and could not have been happier. Even after our first room was a "smokey mess" the staff quickly changed our room and even upgraded us to an ocean view. The food was always fresh and available. The beach was magnificent and the pool was always a fun place to be in the afternoon. We enjoyed cocktails at night while watching the dancers. The entire resort staff was accommodating and went out of their way to make us feel special.
I was understanding that when you go to a all inclusive you didn't need to tip not Jamaica -employees looking for a hand out all the time- not very friendly for sure also everywhere you turn someone trying to sell you drugs very disturbing - the Apple rep there screwed up my birthday plans- when we had them set and he insisted we change them and the tour was cancelled and then not tell us until the last minute. overall very poor country and people want you to pay for it. will never go again
Upon booking- our American Airlines flight number was VUHLEE the names traveling were:
We booked over 9 months ago- June 27.2016, and had requested three ocean front junior suites- on ground level. Bonnie Thompson had also called to ask for an anniversary themed room, and was told that it would be accommodated. When they went to their NEW room "Happy Honeymoon" was bannered across their door. Nothing on the first day. Obviously it is an anniversary not a honeymoon- but no big deal
Upon check in, we discovered that our rooms were on the second floor. After we had been told NUMEROUS times by calling the resort and our travel agent that our room would be ground level. We were told that our rooms could be moved the next day. My father in law has had a knee replacement and is unable to walk up and down steps without assistance. He said he would deal with the room for one night.
The next day two of the rooms on the first floor were available, however my fiancées and my room was not. We were told by Jadine and another girl- Sheenah? That our room would be available around 11 am on 3/11. Upon calling to check on our room it still wasn't available---around 1 pm. I called the front desk from room 6109. The girl on the telephone asked if we could pack our bags and then we would have someone come grab our bags to put them in our room. While walking out of room 6109 we received a phone call and was asked if we could put our bags into their room 6109- the anniversary room- since ours was not ready. We went up to our room 6215 and grabbed our bags and carried them down ourselves. We waited over ten minutes for help, and they had not arrived. We carried our five bags down to room 6109 and I called the front desk and was told david was on his way up to help. I told her that we had carried our OWN bags down the flights of steps and had taken care of it. We found David on the stair case upon leaving room 6109 and gave him our room keys. The front desk and David are aware that we CARRIED OUR OWN luggage down. I talked to the front desk today and they told me- that their staff stated that we did not carry our own luggage down and that the staff did. That was not the case. David had said that he would've put our bags into a closet. What closet I have no idea. So all day we had to Cary our valuables to the pool and beach.
Our room 6111 was not ready until after 4:30 that day. When we were told that our room would be ready around 11. When I finally went to get my room key, we were given duplicates to room 6110. And not ouroom. So after walking all the way to our room the keys did not work. Had to walk back to the front desk to get our new keys. We then carried our luggage again from room 6109 to 6111.
In my father in laws room 6110 there has been more issues that the front desk and the manager Andrew have been made aware of.
While my mother in law was using her hair dryer it completely burnt up. It does not work. She was in the shower yesterday and pulled the curtain down because of how slippery it is in all of our rooms. Andrew said that rubber mats will be provided in our rooms. While they attempted to watch tv the first night in their room- the tv would not turn on. Apparently the fuse is blown in the socket and every time they attempted to turn it on the entire rooms power would shut off. The front desk was notified. The tv is now plugged in- but the socket has not been fixed. this is a fire hazard and the staff obviously does not care to fix this issue.
I have enjoyed my stay, but all of these inconveniences have made our trip no where near as happy as it should've been. The front desk has done nothing but claim that their staff has not told them anything. I was basically called a liar by carrying my own luggage down- because staff claimed they carried it Dow. There was nothing that they could do and that is why I am writing this email. We have spent close to 14k on this vacation and I can be honest I will NOT be back to tropical bay palace. This is mine and my fiancée first trip out of the country and it has not been the best.

Over all had a great relaxing vacation with my honey. Hotel listed as a 5 star but having traveled extensively for the last 10 years to many destinations I would give it a 4. Understanding ahead of time that this resort is about to undergo major renovations we just needed to get away and relax and wanted to be in Negril for the beautiful sunsets. There wasn't anything major to complain about however I would at least liked a king size bed instead of sleeping on the crack of 2 doubles pushed together for the week. Baileys in our coffee in the morning shouldn't be a lot to ask for. This is an easy fix for staff.
Shout out to the awesome nightly entertainment staff who keep the crowds engaged during their performances. These people also double as the pool entertainment/beach games. They look like they truly love their jobs.
Sun wing reps very helpful in assisting us to make a great choice for excursion.
Lots of choices for food. Jerk chicken hut was awesome every day. Buffet for breakfast and lunch provided lots of choices. In the order listed is how much we enjoyed the specialty restaurants for dinners Krystal, Italian, Japanese, Steakhouse.
Our 6th visit to Riu Palace Tropical Bay, 10th visit to Jamaica
One of the best things about this resort is the amazing staff. Michael, Nicholas, Julian, Ullian and Christopher were tremendously helpful and professional at the front desk. Mario, Nadine, and Jaclyn provided warm, friendly and outstanding service in the dining areas. The housekeepers were welcoming and always pleasant. The entertainment staff gave 110% of their energy and talent to the evening shows that they put on. Even the woman with the flower in her hair who swept the floor at lunch was delightful. These staff members, and others, are tremendous assets to the resort. Beyond the wonderful staff, the food is very good at the buffet. The choices are so plentiful that you are bound to find something that pleases you. The chefs who do the buffet grilling and cooking are very gracious and accomodating in cooking to order.
The rooms and common areas are nicely appointed but the property is in need of maintenance/updating that I heard is scheduled for later this year. Our bed was huge and very comfortable. The beach is probably among the best beaches on the island - wide, great sand, with shade trees - and you can take long walks from one end of the bay to the other. It is easy to take a taxi to Rick's for the sunset - plan to go early and stop at Ivan's for a drink - beautiful cliffside location with about a 50 foot walk to Rick's.
Overall, this may not be the swankiest resort - but the accomodations are fine, the price is moderate, the food is very good, the staff is outstanding, and the location amazing. We keep going back for all those reasons and we feel that it is a good value for the money. Good for families, couples and groups.
Great nightly entertainment
Fun snorkeling excursion
Good food, especially the jerk chicken!
Vendor booths you can walk to down the beach
Free watersport rentals
Plenty of lounge chairs available on the beach
Lots of vendors trying to sell you stuff; my husband was offered drugs and a hooker!
Sometimes lots of seaweed
Switched rooms twice due to poor AC!!
Rooms not as modern as other resorts
Small, family friendly resort
We arrived Dec 17th, 2017. I would definitly suggest doing the Mobay Club. A representative was waiting for us when we departed the plan. We didnt wait in any lines, which were long. She took care of our luggage and we received VIP service. We waiting in a private lounge while she made sure our private transport was ready for us. The ride from the hotel was about and hour and 45 min. We booked through Apple and the transportation through Amstar. Our driver was Tareto and he was amazing. He told us about the culture and enlightened us on so many things we had no clue of. Upon arrival at the hotel we checked in and were quickly escorted to our rooms. We got a free upgrade too! The hotel wasnt busy at this time. Rooms were nice and I didnt mind the split beds. I found them very firm but comfortable. Our room did have a strange smell to it but it wasnt a big deal. Maid service was good and friendly. Restaurants and food were good. Staff remembered our names and were excited to see us. Akeem at the buffet and steakhouse was wonderful. Entertainment staff Lloyd and Juicy J (aka Black stallion) were very entertaining. The pool parties were fun to watch and I did get a few good belly laughs. Drinks were good and not watered down. Beach service was good especially if you tip a few bucks. The average wage is $58 a week so all tips were greatly appreciated. The beach was clean and around 4pm were could find numberous starfish. Becareful because the jellyfish also come out then too. We got stung a few times and the lifeguard staff poured vinigar on the stings. We walked to the right on the beach and were able to shop and bring home souvenirs made by the locals. I never felt scared or uncomforatble.Joshua sang us some great Regee on the beach, he was so nice. We took one excursion on a catamaran. We booked through Amstar( reps were so nice and friendly) and we found it very reasonable. Our first stop was MargaritaVille then we boarded a catamaran to snorkle on the reef. It was beautiful! Our last stop was Rick's Cafe. One bit of advice, Do not jump! My kids, ages 13 and 17, jumped with no problem. I'm pretty athletic and didnt hesitate to jump from the highest point allowed. I landed wrong and severely bruised my legs and knocked my whole back out. When I hit I seriously thought I broke my pelvis. I spent the rest of our trip in pain. They had to wheelchair me at the airport I was hurt so bad. I serioulsy didn't think about being in a 3rd world country. Hopsital is 1 hour and 45 min away and no ambulances. If someone would get seriously injured the outcome would be bad, very bad. No chiropractors in Negril either. Front desk referred me to the spa. The lady who gave me a massage actually tried to deep tissue rub my legs that were black and blue. I screamed in pain. Overall, we had a wonderful time. I loved the small size of the resort and my husband and son loved the Jerk chicken. We would definitely go back. I'd love to see what it will look like after the complete renovation.
Will stay someplace else next time
We didn't have the best experience at this hotel and these are the reasons why. We never had a working phone in our room, so room service wasn't an option which would have been nice since the weather wasn't great and sometimes not having to leave your room to get a bite to eat is nice. We didn't have a working toilet for a day. So because we didn't have a working phone, we needed to go to the front desk to ask (3X) for them to please fix out toilet!!!! We also wanted to use the safe in our room which we were locked out of multiple times and couldn't access our money, so again since our phone didn't work, was many trips to the front desk for them to come with us to our room to unlock our safe. We eventually gave up on using the safe. So their only solution was for us to switch rooms. We wanted a top floor room and there weren't any available except in the buildings that were a further walk to the main areas which we did not want. The staff at this hotel were friendly if they knew they could get a tip out of you, if not, then not friendly. For the price that we paid to go to Jamaica for a week, I wish we would of had a better hotel experience,
