Our first day right after we checked in, it appeared that the electric went out. Although they said it came back on, our room was very hot as well as the mini fridge. We called room service twice that day/night but it was still not cold. The next day they sent someone out again and they said that it was working properly and that the room could only get so cold...they had it regulated and it was at its max. Second, I did not read this when doing my research but because I was only staying the 7 days, i could only eat at 3 of the restaurants. My third complaint was that if you went around the compound and went to the main shopping area, where the stores, casino, disco were located at that you could get someone to take you there but they would not drive you back to Del Mar. Even though there were golf carts coming up they would tell you to call to have someone pick us up. We are all in the same compound, grant it they were probably paying more money, but we are all paying customers to your country.
No complaints. Apple staff in the hotel and at the places we visited were very friendly and supportive.
Beautiful resort, although services were lacking
The resort grounds are beautiful! There are palm trees, several large swimming pools and a few wild animals that make this resort feel luxurious. There were, however, several areas in which the resort was lacking. The resort had intermittent power for the first few hours of our arrival. We stayed 3 nights and were only permitted to have dinner reservations for 1 day. The other 2 days and for lunch we were forced to eat at the buffet, snack bar, or room service; the food at those locations were mediocre at best and inevitable at worst. We were also promised $600 in resort credits, however, were simply given coupons that can were not for services we wanted. The entertainment was horrible! The show in the theater was so bad we couldn’t even watch.
A place of memories
Our trip was the best of the four trips we have taken with Apple Vacations. The special care that Apple Employees makes taking a vacation so much better. They made our trip less stressful and very enjoyable. Iberostar was the best in the four trips we've taken with Apple. Everything was top of the top when it came to the Hotel and staff.
The one thing I wasn't happy with was the power in the room (including air conditioner and all outlets) would turn off if there was no movement in the room. This meant the phones didn't charge overnight and the air kept shutting off all night. That being said, I called the front desk about it and they fixed it immediately. Bottom line, if there is anything bugging you, just let them know and they will fix it. Staff was VERY obliging.
April 2018 7 day stay as expected
Hotel and amenities are very nice. Food is mid-grade like most all-inclusives. The specialty restaurants were slightly better in food quality with the Japanese being best. Del Mar is one of 5 hotels on a Iberostar complex. Del Mar and Paraiso beach are the lowest tier, with Lindo and Maya being the mid tier and the Grande being the top tier. This means that Grand can use all facilities. Lindo and Maya can use their facilities as well as Del Mar and Paraiso beach. Del Mar can only use its own facilities. This may or may not bother you but is worth knowing going in. If you wish to upgrade or use the other facilities expect to pay a steep upgrade or trade for timeshare sales pitch listening. All 5 resorts have a central shared shopping area, casino, nightclub, coffee house, etc. this was a nice addition in my opinion. The pools, rooms, grounds, etc were top notch in my opinion. The whole place has a lot of jungle atmosphere to it. The beach was pretty but a lot of seaweed (this seems to be everywhere at Riviera Maya right now). I'm not sure about the water near the beach as I didn't go in but heard it is rocky? Service, people, atmosphere, etc were all very good. I would recommend this place as long as food quality is not a huge concern (it wasn't for me).
Absolutely wonderful stay,
"SUPER" Great Place
My wife and I have visited this Iberostar Resort many times over the years since 2014. The Del Mar is very "BEAUTIFUL" --- "Clean" ---"SAFE" --- "Good Food" and has the "BEST" friendly employees all the time --- always smiling and helping. I would comment this property --- again it's safe and no problem with the liquor. :)
6th visit and we will be back
Great value, excellent staff. Lots of seaweed on the beach this time, which may be a seasonal thing. New fitness center opened in February 2018. We've been home two days and we really miss this place!
Will defiantly never go back
Couldn't check into our room since it wasn't ready when we arrived even though the resort wasn't full, stores and restaurants never opened on time, food was terrible and cold, limited outlets in room and the outlet covers kept falling off, beach was rocky and dirty, taco bar ran out of meat early in the day (they ended up being horrible anyways), had to walk miles if you stayed out past 11 pm since they stopped the ride service, room service closed at 11 pm and it only had crappy food (very limited) and when it arrives its also cold, overall we will never go back to this or any Iberostar resorts again. I give it a D- and can't believe apple rates it so high.
Sales pitch to stop using Apple vacation at the Iberostar.
The hotel was beautiful and clean, food was excellent. Bar service was bad, very poor qualilty liquor. We were offered a free massage if we listened to a sales pitch. Basically it was a $12000 (cheapest plan) buy into a discount travel service (said we would need to use Apple anymore). We like our Apple vacation trips very much.

This is my second time staying at this resort. The hotel itself is beautiful. The seaweed was so horrible, there were piles and piles all lining the beach and in the water, which was very disappointing, but nothing that anyone could do. Last year, there was none. The weather was very off and on cloudy, rainy, and sunny. The hotel grounds are very well kept and always so beautiful. I HIGHLY suggest spending the extra money to get an ocean front room, the view can't be beat. I stayed on the second floor, more in the middle and it is just perfect. Originally, they put us all the way in the corner and we had them move us because the rental shack was half of our view. The beach is beautiful and the pool is very nice with many palm trees surrounding it. Although there are a few deep spots in the pool, most of it is shallow and if you're a swimmer like me, you might be disappointed. The food is not good, everything had an off taste and is never warm. The resort is very large, but doable. If you do not like walking, there are shuttles that come to pick you up. The staff is very friendly and will get you most anything when you ask.
Overall, even though it is a lovely resort and I had a wonderful time, I will not be back. I have been to the Dominican Republic as well and it just seems as though the workers there are more attentive and constantly seeing if you need anything and doing things without asking, whereas here you need to ask.
Hope this helps!
Wonderful resort with amazing beach
I stayed at the Iberostar resort from May 5-12. It's an excellent resort with great staff. The Fit and Fun team at the fitness centre is super and the Spinning classes were excellent. It's a great to have the beach and/or pool experience for everybody. I personally enjoyed the beach all week and the seaweed was not a problem at all. The did a great job cleaning up the beach and it was easy to find a beach chair daily. The beach wait staff was very attentive and friendly along with all the staff at the buffet restaurants. The Japanese and Italian restaurants were great and the Brazilian restaurant was ok. I enjoyed walking from my room to the beach daily as the grounds are beautifully kept. However, if the walk was too much, the carts returned every 5-10 minutes for pick up/drop off. The peacocks and flamingo's are a great addition to the grounds. Rooms are cleaned daily and mini fridge was stocked daily. Overall I had an excellent experience and would definitely return. (You will need OFF spray for the mosquitoes in the evenings).
wonderfull resort with beautiful beach
for me the most important was the beach. i'm not coming to Mexico to stay at the pool or the resort - for this I can stay in Portugal. i came to enjoy crystal clear sea and nice sand. i was a bit afraid because of some comments here saying the water had lots of sea weed but maybe we were lucky because there wasn't 'any'. water IS indeed crystal clear, lots of fish around us (see picture) and we did lots of snorkeling. PERFECT. the beach was perfect and the weather as well, no rain and very hot (we stayed from 04 May until 11 May).
the resort is amazing: you are inside the nature, lot of animals, trees, green everywhere. you need to walk because the resort is huge (they have buggies but we like to walk). they have different buffets with great food for breakfast, lunch and dinner. i tried 2 speciality restaurants and i didn't liked them at all (japanese and brazilian). they were not at all japanese and brazilan food. here in portugal we have wonderfull japanese and brasilian restaurants and we know what they are suposed to taste but i guess in a resort in Mexico you couldn't expect great japanese and brazilian food (the japanese was a fun show but the food is to laugh and the brazilian the meat was not at all good meat, picanha was also to laugh) and that's ok because the buffets were good.
staff is amazing, we like to be on our own so we were afraid they were too much 'come and play' but they were nice and polite.
room (1751) was amazing, good location and good bed. the shower not so much because of the bad pressure and temperature never right. but all very clean and mini bar (only drinks) was free.
pool is also great, huge and with sunbeds.
it was a good experience and we don't regret at all booking this resort :)
Helpful Tips to Enjoy Your Stay at Iberostar Paraiso del Mar
Stayed 28 April - 5 May 2018
This is my 2nd time to the del Mar and 3rd time staying at this cluster of Iberostar resorts (stayed at the Lindo in 2009). This is definitely one of my favorite resorts in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. However, a few things have changed since my last stay in 2014. Discovered that Iberostar is encouraging folks to book directly through them instead of a 3rd party like Apple Vacations, so they're offering the Star Prestige club membership that provides lots of nice perks if you join. You are no longer able to request (and receive) a building closer to the pool or beach, which is now considered an upgrade, without either paying a few hundred dollars more or joining the Star Prestige club. And you can forget about trying to get more specialty restaurant reservations than your one per three/four nights or three per seven/more nights stay. More dining reservations are only available if you join the Star Prestige club; with this membership you are permitted to reserve a specialty restaurant anywhere on the complex for each night of stay. There are quite a few perks with the club membership, but there's a hefty members fee that I'm not willing to pay; just feels like buying into a timeshare. However, one good thing did occur as a result - we were forced to stay in building 19 or 20 if we weren't members or paying additional for the upgrade, and building 20 was actually perfect. It wasn't noisy like I would have expected and was just steps away from the theater and main buffet and other dining restaurants. To get to the pool or beach, just remember to walk the back path (behind the buildings where the golf carts travel) and catch a ride to bldg 13 or 11 for the pool and bldg 10 (or say the beach) for the beach. I always tipped $1 each way, which was never expected but much appreciated. This is a huge resort, so you'll appreciate the ride if you're not able to walk the 10 - 15 minutes each way to these areas.
The beach swimming area isn't as nice in front of the del Mar (lots of dark water - debris), but you can walk off to the right, which is closer to the Lindo and get in the water there for swimming. Water is crystal clear - you can see straight to the bottom. The pool is huge and one of the many features that has me returning to this resort. Never had a problem finding chairs under umbrellas any time of day at the beach or the pool.
Don't forget to bring bug spray. The del Mar is in a natural jungle setting with lots of nature: tall plants and wildlife (coatis, peacocks, geese, swans, iguanas, etc), and because of stagnant water sources, mosquitoes are plentiful, especially at nighttime. They also get into the rooms when housekeeping leaves the doors open while cleaning your room. I read in Readers Digest that Bounty dryer sheets repel mosquitoes, so bring a few with you and place in your room and near your bed. If you remember to spray your arms and legs with bug spray before going out at night, you shouldn't have any problems with mosquitoes. I only got bit a few times during an 8 day stay and never during the morning or during the day at the beach or pool. The times I did get bit were when I forgot to spray at night.
Beautiful and huge. Two floors. Yoga class held in upstairs classroom. Fruit and beverages available. Towels and lockers available. Best gym I've ever seen at a resort.
Very nice playground for kids over at the shopping center.
(a) I don't know if I was lucky this time or if all the room's bedding has been upgraded, but I had the most comfortable mattress and pillows, and I'm very hard to please if not sleeping in my own bed. My roommate and my daughter and son-in-law staying in another room also confirmed this.
(b) Bring extension cords. There's only one electric outlet in the bathroom; two outlets over the dresser; one outlet by the lamp near the balcony (but need to unplug lamp to use it); and only one outlet behind the nightstand but the phone is plugged into it. The phone has 4 different charging cords coming out of it, but none fit my phone and my son-in-law told me that his didn't work.
(c) A/C is locked at 22 celsius as the lowest setting, which is pretty warm with the high humidity. If you ask the front desk, they will lower and lock it at 18 celsius. Even though 18 celsius is 64.4 degrees, which should be very cold, it was only cool in the room. I was still sweating at night with just a bed sheet over me.
(d) Room Darkening Curtains can be found behind the curtains and sheers. First few nights I didn't know they were there and I would wake at sunrise when the light flooded the room.
(e) Download the Google Translate App so you can communicate with housekeeping. Take anything you don't want out of the refrigerator and leave a note telling them what you would like. I took out all of the full calorie soda and told them I wanted diet cola and more water. Also, tell them you want "Aqua Grande - 2" for the bathroom. Leave at least one dollar on the dresser above the refrigerator with your note each day. These large water containers are wonderful when brushing teeth.
(f) There are no dresser drawers for storing your clothing, only shelves. On one side of the dresser you have a shelf with a top and bottom section. On the other side of the dresser you have the refrigerator. There are two additional shelves in the closet under the room safe. We wound up using the luggage table for our small carry-on suitcases and stored underwear, socks, and bathing suits in them. Shorts and shirts went on the shelves and nice shirts/dresses went on the clothes hangers. Note: There are no pinchers on the bottom of the clothes hangers to hang skirts or pants.
(g) There are no elevators to the upper floors.
(a) The shopping center has ice cream and crepes, tacos, burgers, and a coffee shop that's included in your stay. Small sandwiches and pastries are also available in the coffee shop. It's nice having something different to eat at the shopping center for both breakfast and lunch than the same old buffet food.
(b) There's also a Sports Restaurant (table tops are vinyl records and there's an old time sports car inside; believe it's called the Rock Cafe Restaurant), on the left side of the del Mar near the lobby. We ate there on our last night since I was tired of buffet for dinner and pleasantly found their cheese sticks and flank steak to be exceptional.
(c) Japanese: Great entertainment watching the chef prepare our food tableside with other dining guests. Definitely recommend it.
(d) Steakhouse: Steak and salmon was good.
(e) Mediterranean: I found the salmon to be dry, but there were other items on the menu.
(f) Buffett: Food was pretty bland and food offerings each day was repetitive and boring.
- Wish we were able to try these other specialty restaurants, but since we weren't Star Prestige members, we couldn't get any additional reservations. We heard several different stories from different folks working the Concierge desk. One was that you could just show up at the restaurant and ask them if they had availability (no shows), but the Brazilian restaurant told us that without a paper reservation, they wouldn't take us. Another Concierge person told us that we could check back with them from 8 am - 4 pm the day of and ask if they had any availabilities for that evening, but when we did, they said we already had our guaranteed 3 reservations and that they had to hold slots open for folks checking in upon arrival.
- Environmental Fee: Upon checkout, there's a 20 pesos/day/room fee (about $1.10 USD per day)
We really had a great week staying at the del Mar. Frustration with the building selection at check-in turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as building 20 was the perfect location for dining, theater, and closer to the shopping mall.
Wonderful Family Vacation
I came here with my family and it was fantastic! My initial experience was with the baggage captain who went out of his way to ensure we had rooms next to each-other. The rooms were clean and bright. My granddaughter especially loved the kids club and while I cannot remember the gentleman's name - the leader was amazing with the children. The food, pool, beach, and grounds were fantastic. I highly recommend any of the Iberostar properties, as I have stayed in a few, and would stay here again. Everyone is extremely nice and will do whatever they can for you.
