Riu Palace Mexico abounds with European flourishes such as hand painted murals, floral ceilings rimmed in gold, and a tiny Spanish chapel. Splashing fountains, statues, gazebos, and wrought iron benches rest in a romantic courtyard beneath the shade of towering palms, while sprays of bougainvillea adorn slanted sun-shelters by two magnificent pools.

La Bodega, Don Julian, El Patio, and La Traviata restaurants offer specialty a la carte dishes and spectacular buffets. Recently revamped menus now offer a wide range of cuisine and finer ingredients at the a la carte restaurants, as well as the incorporation of a vegetarian menu in all restaurants. A lavish nightclub in whimsical design hosts nightly entertainment, and a pristine white beach along the mesmerizing turquoise sea promises to delight the senses and soothe the soul.

Deluxe and spacious guestrooms (mostly split-level) were renovated in 2012. All are beautifully decorated in rich wood and granite rose tile, offering a sitting area with mini-fridge and bar.

Endless amenities include waiter service at the renovated pool area, snorkeling, windsurfing, body boarding, kayaking, and scuba lessons in the pool! Riu Palace Mexico provides the best entertainment for adults and children. RiuLand Kids' Club offers activities for the little ones.

The vacation from hell

Lets start with transportation. Don't take the Apple Vacation provided airport to hotel transportation. The transportation is not exclusive to your hotel, it can be any hotel property. We spent hours in a hot uncomfortable van. The actual ride is 45 minutes from Cancun Airport to Riu Palace Mexico, and the cost is only $40USD. Upon arrival the hotel front desk staff was highly inattentive, there were 6 hotel staff at the desk, but only one of those people were checking people in. There was only one other couple checking in and at the desk in general. The desk staff ignored us as we waited approximately 15 minutes to be served. During that time any one of the staff members could have discontinued what they were doing to acknowledge us or inform us that we were waiting for the one staff member checking people in. Once attended to, we were upgraded to a jacuzzi room. Our room was great looking, however over the course of our stay we learned it's downfalls. First of all the room would never cool below 24 degrees celsius, or 75 degrees Fahrenheit. There was a ceiling fan but when on high overnight to provide comfort, it dried out our eyes and sinuses. The tub, shower, and sinks were all crusted with hard water scale. The property should take better care of weekly maintenance to prevent this. We had to clean our shower's rainfall water head in order for it to spray a normal pattern. The sinks were almost unusable as the mesh diffusers were caked with water scale that beyond a trickle the water sprayed all over the counter. The tub was unusable as it produced a very disgusting tub filled with brown water which left a ring on the tub. The food and dining staff were excellent! The drinks seemed a bit watered down, had to order doubles, and most soft drinks from the fountain were flat. Look for the bottled soft drinks. The beach was meticulously maintained and a walk down the coast showed the staff kept up on the seaweed maintenance. Unfortunately we met the hotel doctor during our visit due to a fall. The entire place is tile and combined with evening humidity is very slick. If you need to see the doctor be sure to have cash, and even though the doctor is RIU staff, you can't charge his $140USD fee to your room.

We have stayed at this resort at least 12 times. Always had good service. We have known most of staff all this time and they always remember you and what your likes are. Seems the quality of linens, towels have declined. Resort is also showing age even though it was updated a few years back. We will still visit here and have always been pleased with RIU Chain hotels esp Palace level

4th visit to this stunning resort
Emma B, Burton upon Trent, United Kingdom
Tue Apr 24 04:32:41 EDT 2018
Visited this hotel for the 4th time in October. Was so happy to be back. We were welcomed with the "welcome home" as we arrived. Refreshing welcome drinks on arrival, along with a glass of champagne as we checked in. Friends from the USA were joining us a week into the holiday, and after speaking to reception they were situated close to us for when they arrived. Food and drink is wonderful and plentiful here. I am a fussy eater but always had a full plate of food, 10 year old daughter first visit and she was truly overwhelmed. The crepes at the main buffet restaurant at heaven as are the chocolate milkshakes. Pool areas and grounds are all beautifully kept. Always plenty of loungers, and lots to keep you entertained. The staff here are exceptional, truly beautiful people who cannot do enough to assist you and make your stay the best it can be. Beach is beautiful and the ocean so crystal clear. Had some good days out in the ocean. Was such a joy to meet our friends from the USA in the place where we first met them 4 years ago, and to also meet members of there extended family. Was a truly magical holiday, and we can't wait to return yet again. Both myself and my husband are truly in love with this place, and the staff.

A truly fab holiday

Me and my mom have just stayed for 2 weeks at the palace mexico and it was amazing Only 1 hour transfer from cancun airport we were greeted with a smile and a much needed welcome drink Our room was lovely and clean although shocked by the open plan bathroom, so you cant be shy if you stay here There are optics, a fully stocked mini fridge and tea n coffee facilities which are replenished free of charge in the room The bathroom also supplies shampoo, moisturizer etc etc We had rooms cleaned and fresh towels every day and on the odd occasion we had the beds turned down and phone calls from reception to make sure we were ok You get free towels from 8am for the pool and there were always plenty of sunbeds by the pool or on the beach you could even try a hammock out The sea and the pool was lovely and warm and always something going on by the riu entertainment team if you got bored of sunbathing, it wasnt in your face either if you wanted to relax It took 30 to 40 min either on the beach or on the path to walk into playa del Carmen and its worth a walk too The food at the buffets were yummy, something for everyone, it was well stocked and fresh The a la carte restaurants are also worth a visit but you may have to wait for these, 45min we had to wait to be seated for many of them There is also a good choice of beverages The gym was ok, not the best but suffice, it does need to be better air conditioned I think my only complaint about the hotel was the service it was very slow at times and at one point when we had gone to get some breakfast they had cleared our drinks away when we hadnt even finished, but i have noticed it you tip the service you get is spot on I would also like to thank our tui rep keiron, he was great and very informative and always at hand for any questions that needed answered The entertainment on the night wasnt the best It was ok to pass the night away but it could do with improving The entertainment team work really hard day and night but they need better acts I would deffo return to this hotel again It provided everything for a truly magical holiday

April is perfect to visit. Perfect weather, not hot with the breeze that u can just chill outdoors all day long! Services and the people are the true asset to this resort. They are always smiling, welcoming, attentive and warm to take care of us anytime and anywhere. Decor is not really my cup of tea but it sort of growing on me at the end of the trip. It’s indeed clean and spacious. The only two downsides I would point out are 1st it is not smoke-free resort (well, i don’t know if there is any like that here), 2nd is if u really love swimming in the ocean and hang at the beach, I think the resorts in hotel district might be better choices. There is just too much “kelp” floating around on the sand and in the ocean that makes it very unappealing to enjoy the water. Oh and.... if only they can have more lounge chairs by the pool with “shades”, it would have been more perfect.

Great Resort But Entertainment Downhill From Last Year !

We just returned from a wonderful vacation at Riu Palace Mexico . The property with it's pools, beautiful hedges , palm trees , exceptional restaurants , great palazzo to sit out on in the evening & piano bar lobby which is a calm place to have a drink before your evening meal are all fantastic. Two things I must mention which are changes from last year : One, the entertainment at night has gone downhill quite a bit. Last year each night we viewed Las Vegas type shows at their indoor theatre. This time only one such show . Yes there were 2 nights with folklore of Mexico which was interesting but one night was a terrible Kareoke night which was simply disgusting , another night the staff dressed in white danced on stage then had the mass of people sitting in the plaza come up to jump around..not dance..just be silly. It was a big turn off for us and most middle aged & senior people who wanted to watch a proper show or dance to a band .We left immediately as soon as we realized that this was just a mob !! Also the touch screen that tells the schedule of entertainment was never correct in the whole 7 days!!NEVER!! Our last night there was supposed to be a circus but they just had volunteers go on stage to do silly things..a quick made up entertainment which didn't interest us at all .Really..the entertainment was a let down & with the bomb scare in Playa Del Carmen & the news of a man being beaten up & robbed in that town, no one dared go there for nite clubs . Secondly, the hurricanes that had occurred before April 5th have eroded that beautiful beach. You can still walk the beach & it's the same as it always was in front of the hotels but as you walk towards the ferry wharf, where the private homes are next to the beach, the sand at one point is non existant!! Two palm trees next to their cement wall of their deck were tied to the house as their roots were totally exposed & one palm tree had already fallen. Sand bags were placed in that eroded spot but the beach was eroded past that point as well .So instead of an hour walk(30minutes each way) we had a 40 minute walk in total. I was impressed though that all the seaweed coming in was delt with right away with tractors managing it & burying it so that the beach in front of the Riu Palaces etc are pristine . The staff are excellent !Great waiters who attend to all your needs . I celebrated my 70th birthday there & they really made me feel special with the cake & singing & big birthday sign plus balloons in my room & a call to come up on stage to drink a tequila shot with everyone singing to me & raising their glass. That meant a lot to me. I will always trust the Riu name as having excellent quality. The Riu Palaces are that much better than simply a Riu & so we will always look for that name wherever we go .Finally a hotel chain that one can trust !
