We've visited a Barcelo in Costa Rica 4 times.
Jul 17 2013
3 times in Playa Langosta, 1 in Tambor. The rooms are clean and comfortable, the beach is great, and the food is very good. The staff are very capable and friendly. The Barcelo definitely has a Costa Rican flavor that we really enjoy.

At arrival we were assign a room that had mold on the ceiling, the Swiss Travel Rep was nice enought to help us get another room. no mold, but not very clean. You also had to keep one of the 2 room cards you were given to keep light and ac attached to the monitor at all times. The food was the same every night, rice and beans and chorizos, pork, chicken or bad steak. The Wi fii that we paid for was turn off the 2nd day, and can only be used at one device at a time. We would ask for towels for the room, they never had clean towels available. The only good thing at this resort was the alcohol and fresh fruit at the bar.

We really loved it. With friendly staff, excellent food, very very clean, awesome mountain views, the beach was a stone throw from the hotel pool. We could sit at tables in the pool bar and look out at the ocean. Really lovely sunsets and postcard perfect views.

Barcelo at Langosta Beach Tamirindo

We really enjoyed our week at the Barcelo. We would return and recommend it to others. I believe the resort carries a 4 Star rating and that is probably accurate; however, we were completely satisfied with the amenities and food. We were not notified about our departure details as promised. We called on our own and obtained the information.

Good affordable alternative

This is my 2nd time staying at the Barcelo. This is a good affordable all-inclusive hotel. The buffet gets old after awhile but most buffets are average. We like this resort as it is close to town. Most of the other all inclusive resorts are far away.

I stayed on the hotel for a few days, the service was really good, all people from reception to the cleaning staff was always nice and kind, very respectful and ready to help us. Nothing to complaint in overall service. However, there are a couple of things that I cannot ignore and need to be shared after our time on the hotel: No wifi service, I’ve stayed on different hotels and at least you get a pretty decent free wifi connection with optional upgrade, this was not the case, cellphone signal was awful and there was no free wifi for the customers, even our ride from the Tamarindo Airport to the Hotel had free wifi, but not the hotel, really bad, we’re on the 21st century, we customers are used to be connected. Even though we paid all inclusive, I fond out it only applies to cheap liquors, I was surprised when I was charged a couple of bucks for a Jack n’ Coke. Even the minibar had just 3 things, water, an apple juice and a coke, we didn’t even take those. Kids jumping and playing all over the place, specially on the Hot tub, like if the kids pool and the other pool wasn’t enough. 4- I read a sign that said “swim at your own risk” you just can’t do that, you really need to have staff to take care of the guests, including someone that needs help in the pool, there can be accidents, and people is at your facility, only on Friday I saw a guy with a “Salvavidas” shirt. Food was just ok, the real difference was the cook on the far left of the saloon making food aside from the buffet, that made the difference between a decent meal to a good one. This for lunch and dinner, breakfast was good. For the rest, the weather was nice, we got to see lots of iguanas and birds, also a couple of raccoons at night. And the late night show was great, the performers are really talented.

terrible stay :(

We did not choose Occidental, it was chosen for us as part of a package vacation from Ecoterra. We would not have chosen this on our own given the reviews we've read. Given that we'd only be here 2 nights we sucked it up and tried to make the best of it. We did not enjoy our stay here at all. Let me start by saying every single staff member we came across was incredibly friendly and helpful. Bartenders, wait staff, front desk people, bell boy, life guards, activity team, spa staff, maintenance, maids... every one greeted us with a smile and a buenas dias. Unfortunately, just about everything else here was lacking. We were first put in a tiny room that was literally above the men's bathroom at the pool. It was so obnoxiously loud we couldn't stand it. I asked if there was a possibility of switching rooms, they had me check out another room to see if we'd like it better. At first glance, it looked much better. It was at the very least away from the pool and quiet! It smelled very musty, like mildew. The pillows were discolored to the point that we didn't feel comfortable putting our faces on them, so we put towels over them. We still both woke up with mystery rashes on our necks. Fun. The bottom sheet was just a top sheet folded over the mattress, so if you moved too much it came undone at the bottom and you were touching a disgusting yellow mattress. Yes, yellow. The bed constantly felt damp. The curtains had mold/mildew all over them. There are what looks like old water drip marks from The ceiling down the walls. The balcony door sticks very easily and is very difficult to maneuver. The shower is extremely slow to drain, you stand in an inch of water the entire time. No fan on the bathroom to prevent mold/mildew. What looks like mold/mildew in some areas... or something else black in color, who knows. There is some sort of opening in the ceiling that is constantly dripping. I almost fell 3 times upon walking into the room before I realized that was what was causing me to slip. We put towels down so we wouldn't fall. As you've probably read in other reviews, there were literally 3 drinks in the mini bar, 1 water, 1 pear drink, and 1 bottle of coke. For the 2 of us. At and all inclusive resort. I've never been somewhere that doesn't have 2 of everything, including alcohol, water, soda, juice, and snacks. They charge $5 per day for wifi. The wifi ONLY works in the lobby/restaurant/pool area. Not in your rooms. And even when it's "working" it barely works. Can't even load a website properly. This is an all inclusive hotel that doesn't include free wifi. Better yet... This is a hotel in 2017 that doesn't have wifi access.... like hello the van that drove us here had wifi.... get with the times, Occidental! There is one restaurant (I guess there is another one you can only go to with reservations and if you stay >3 nights, but we did not, so we only had the 1 option) for breakfast, lunch, dinner. All buffet style. Not great, not terrible. No hand sanitizer stations anywhere, nothing to promote cleanliness prior to touching the buffet utensils. The poolside snack bar also had bar type foods like fries and pizza and nachos. They were okay if you got them the second they were put out. The poolside bar's drinks were really poor. The lobby bar served better drinks. Even though it was the same menu at both. I didn't go to the gym but my friend said it was an average hotel gym, some of the machines weren't working. I got one of the spa specials, $60 for sauna, holistic massage, and coffee scrub-- which I thought was a really good deal. The young lady who did my massage was tiny but she was STRONG! She really worked the knots in my upper back. The coffee scrub was nice. The sauna was like any other sauna. The room where I got the massage was off of the bathroom/shower area, I could hear every toilet flush, sink run, people's conversations, etc during my massage. Not ideal. But again, the actual treatment was very good for the price. The pool was crowded with children running, jumping, splashing, screaming... Not relaxing at all. Wish they would have had an adults only pool and hot tub area. We never went into the hot tub because there was always a ton of children in it. There was a dirty diaper left on the edge of the pool one day for just about the entire time we were out there. So disgusting. Maintenance was hard at work scrubbing all of the lounge chairs outside at the pool, which was nice to see. The landscaping of the grounds was really nice. Lots of iguanas, crabs, birds running around. I was told you could see howler monkeys on the morning but we didn't get to see any. The beach was GORGEOUS! could have been better maintained, the lounge chairs were filthy, trash everywhere. But the views were just fantastic. It was very rocky though so bring swim shoes! It seemed as though some people knew the exact right spot to go swim into without rocks, but we didn't go out past our knees. We didn't partake in any activities because we were never told when or where any of them were-- with the exception of zumba at the pool. Pros: staff friendliness and beautiful gardens. Cons: literally everything else. Will never, ever be back. Will never, ever recommend this place to others.

Traveling to Costa Rica, I was most enthused about seeing the world renowned natural environment. I left being reinvigorated by the people of Costa Rica as much as their part of the world. The Occidental was an excellent base from which to tour around Guanacaste. The hotel is very comfortable and well kept. My room was quiet, clean and modern, with a veranda that looked right out on the Pacific. The hotel is all inclusive. Contrary to complaints I have seen posted, I found the food to be appetizing. Because the hotel is attractive to many Costa Ricans, I was able to meet and make friends with people who weren't tourists. This was an enriching experience for me. The beach is a classic Pacific beach. There is a good surf break. I swam across the mouth of a small river and got to an endless stretch of beach that was empty of people. Trips to go diving at the Islas Catalinas and to hike around the Rincon de la Vieja volcano were unique experiences and provided the level of thrill I was looking for. All in all, a wonderful trip.

Occidental Tamarindo is an old hotel but it has a good location, ( close to town) very clean, great service (staff is very friendly) and good food ( fresh food and menu changes every day for dinner). We recommended if you are traveling with kids as the value is very good.
