Fantastic All-Inclusive Resort with a great staff!

My family and I stayed at Occidental Tamarindo while there for my father's Celebration of Life and the Occidental staff were very friendly and welcoming! They ensured everything was set up and all our guests were accommodated. They supplied wheelchairs for those, in our party, who needed one. The rooms were average hotel room sized but served its purpose in a clean and inviting way. The pools were wonderfully refreshing and huge. The meals were extremely delicious and the staff always ensured we had enough water, coffee or soda and were quick to clean off used plates. The activities' staff were amazing!! I cannot speak highly enough of Joaquin and his super friendly and talented crew! They worked to ensure all guests were entertained through their nightly shows which included a variety of trivia shows, karaoke and traditional Costa Rican dances along with daytime activities including darts, ping-pong, poolside dancing and morning Zumba. They had activities geared towards little ones throughout the day although, not having little ones, I can't speak to this much. The only downsides were that the WiFi does not work, too well, in the rooms, only around the pool and reception area, the nightly activities needed more advertisement and it would have been awesome if there were more beach side activities (more boogie boards, surf boards, beach toys, etc). Additionally, the town of Tamarindo was a little out of walking distance from the hotel so we had to take a shuttle into town, which there is a cost to use, any time we went there for shopping or to watch the surfers. Overall, great hotel with friendly and caring staff! Highly recommend! Make sure to ask about those nightly shows!

This is a great family resort with lots of activities for the kids. The kids club girls were super friendly and you can tell they enjoy their jobs. There are lots of activities for kids and adults. I enjoyed watching the adult Zumba classes in session with my morning mojito in hand. :) The pool was nice with a shallow section for smaller kids and also a hot tub area. The pool bar always had food and the bar staff were also friendly. The room was clean and comfortable. Food for lunch was really good and I especially enjoyed the fish in really tasty sauce and the beef was also delicious. There were options for every type of eater. My one thing is that my knife was very dull and I had trouble cutting though my beef which was tender. I meandered through their really zen grounds to find the amphitheater to take a peek at the flower decorating convention that I heard was taking place. There were so many fruit trees and cool looking iguanas on the lush property. The landscaping was on point and you can actually hear the sounds of nature! The beach was very nice. There are rock formations which made the beach views breathtaking. Kids enjoyed digging for crabs and exploring. I would recommend water shoes. I saw quite a few surfers out from the beach as well. We decided to check out the nearby town of Tamarindo and it had a cool surfer town vibe with a relaxed atmosphere. There are a couple surf board rental shops if you ever want to try the waves. It was just 3 mins away from the resort and Jerry who works the front area was nice to give us a ride in. Lots of beach restaurants are here, and there were some really good deals for ‘Pura Vida’ t-shirts and souvenirs. There were discounted prices at ‘happy hour’ beginning at 3pm. The locals say the night life is popping here. We spent one sunset on the beach back at the Tamarindo resort feasting on movie theatre quality popcorn, wings, and these little fried potato balls with cheesy goodness on the inside that we scouted from the pool bar. I would definitely go back and stay here. Great staff and a really nice place to spend some family time. If you love the pool or the beach it’s a win win!!

Some Improvement Can Be Made, But Otherwise Quite Decent

I ended up going to Costa Rica with a group of friends. We were there to celebrate my friend's 30the birthday. We wanted to stay somewhere that stayed true to the Costa Rican culture, but also not too far away from what we are normally used to here in Florida. Occidental Tamarindo was able to provide us with what we were looking for. The check-in process was the best and went absolutely flawless. So easy to check-in! However, there were some things that could definitely be improved. First was the Wi-Fi. You can only really access it within the lobby. You may be able to access it by the pool, but that is about it. Wi-Fi should be accessible within your rooms, especially when I'm trying to call back home or post pictures to social media from throughout the day. Second, was the rooms. They were clean for the most part and our beds were made every day, but the bathroom was a bit gross. You could tell that first the toilet was extremely crooked. The bathtub had rings of mildew and mold around the edges. It was quite run down. Lastly, the food and alcohol. The food tasted quite good, but the options daily were not there. Breakfast was the same basically every morning. Lunch/Dinner same options for the most part, maybe one or 2 items would be swapped out. The alcohol was very generic and did not taste good. We ended up just going into town and buying drinks elsewhere and having lunch/dinner outside of the hotel. Overall our experience was good, but could have definitely been better. Most likely will stay elsewhere next time we go. We checked in on a Sunday and checked out on a Thursday.

A trip with it's ups and downs.

We had a group of 12 that went end of May. Transport and check in were flawless. We checked in on a Saturday, so the reviews that say that this is a "staycation" for locals is very much true. Very crowded during the weekend, however, not an issue, what one would expect. Come Monday - everyone was gone and then the pool got drained! Apparently it was leaking into the neighboring areas affecting wildlife. The management/tour coordinator were AWESOME! They worked together to help balance out our lack of pool and wanting to explore the beauty of Costa Rica! I wish I wrote down all the names of the staff that helped... the Britt Store clerk, he was great in helping us manage purchases that needed to be shipped... there was hotel desk personnel that went above and beyond to help us. And the bar staff... they are attentive and want to make sure your stay is positive. I do the 4 stars only due to the fact that the hotel knew they needed to fix the pool and could have send a message out to guests. That would not have changed our reservation for the 12 of us, however, would have mitigated disappointment. Also - that 4 stars goes with the housekeeping staff. We arrived on a Saturday - took till Thursday to get our soap/shampoo/etc replenished. We did not say anything, kind of looking to see how long it would take - (we had our own)... it was new personnel that came on end of week and that's when we saw the change. Overall - Would stay here again. Nothing like waking up to Howler Monkeys off your balcony!

Amazing stay!

Very clean and beautiful hotel. Service was hospitable, attentive, responsive and helpful. We needed help to reserve a shuttle and the front desk was very helpful. We asked for bottled water daily and the food servers did not hesitate to bring us water. The food was excellent and having access to food at all times was a huge convenience for the family given the fact that my kids are always hungry and like to snack. Overall stay was wonderful!
