Riu Palace Macao.... top notch
I've stayed at this hotel in excess of 15 times, And it gets better each time I return. I've also stayed in a number of other hotels and the Macao is #1. The facilities are clean and comfortable, the staff is friendly, the staff is friendly and goes the extra miles to make sure your completely satisfied, the food choices in the main buffets seem to never end, and the pools and beach are outstanding. There are also plenty of activities available during the day and a show virtually every night. I've always enjoyed a great time. The Macao is also the only Riu hotel in the group that's adults only. Overall I would rate Stowe hotel 5 stars, and plan on returning.
Services at hotel
The staff and the services provided were outstanding
Beautiful place to stay
Everything was wonderful from the minute we checked in. The front desk people were so friendly, the service throughout our stay was great. The room was cleaned a couple times a day. The food was some of the best I've had at an all inclusive resort. The pools and pool areas were clean, the beach was nicely kept up. Besides for the weather, which could not be controlled, the trip was great all the way around!
worst vacation ever
the worst hotel I have ever stayed at
We decided to escape to Punta Cana this year and Riu Palace Macao was our destination! From Dari at check in to FrNces from apple we were off to a good start. Maid service was exceptional however hotel maintenance was poor; our phone was broken the entire week, we were told the man that repairs that was on holiday. Air conditioning in the rooms was hit or miss with our last night a total miss when the room hit 88 degrees. Again we were told nonchalantly that the entire building was without ac and they hoped to have it repaired that day(as we checked out). So a few bumps in the road but back to general service like Francisco who took his personal time to help us obtain a bulb syringe from town and Juan who kept my glass full (most often with ice water). The area is beautiful as is the resort! Food was mediocre as were drinks but cerveza was nice and cold! We would go back, probably earlier in the year when not as hot! Great time!!
10 Year Anniversary
10 year anniversary
We had the absolute best vacation ever!! Our anniversary trip could not have been better. The room, staff, beach, pool and the animation team was simply the best! SuperMambo was our favorite of the animation team but we loved Aleesa too! We really loved the whole team because they were amazing. SuperMambo definitely brought the party every time he entered the room! He taught us how to salsa and made us crack up the whole time. We adored SuperMambo!! He made our trip so fun!! I have nothing negative to say at all! The resort was gorgeous and relaxing. I read so many mixed reviews when I was researching resorts and I have to say the negative ones are just RIDICULOUS!! I mean I don't think this vacation could have gone better! We enjoyed every second. The food was great and there was a huge variety. I tried grouper for the first time and that's my favorite fish now. We are planning our next vacation back to the Macao as soon as possible. Even though there are many resorts in Punta Cana I can't see a need to try any other when we obviously found the best! When you go look up SuperMambo for a good time!
The hotel and staff is just what we expected with Riu. We have stayed in Riu Hotels in several countries and it has always been a pleasant experience. The resort was well maintained and overall the staff was courteous and attentive (there is always one or two that don't make you fell like you are at home). The entertainment staff did an excellent job, along with the bar and service staff. The maid service did a fabulous job with taking care of our room and the resort. The food was excellent, a lot of variety and different selections each day. The dessert bar was out of this world. Our only dull spot of the trip was with the front desk on check in day (our room was not ready at 3 pm) and the staff did not seem as though they knew how to handle it. Once the Front Desk Supervisor was called over he was able to straighten it out. The worst part of the trip was SPIRIT AIRLINES, they nickle and dime you for everything, it cost my family an additional $305 just to get our luggage and seat assignments. I would never fly Spirit again and Apple Vacations should not even include them in their packages.
we had 4 couples traveling and were all givent he same area which was good, however, there was construction outside our room balcony from 7 am to 9 pm everyday.
The driver lost my luggage. It was found at the second hotel which was 15 minute away from my hotel.
riu palace macao
upon check in we were told our room wouldn't be ready until the next day, at this point we were offered a upgraded suite for 1 night. the lady at the desk said it was free for 1 night and if we wanted to stay in this room it would be 80 dollars more a night. the next day at around 9 am we checked and were told to check back later, at 12 noon was told the room wouldn't be ready until after 2 pm, I complained about having to unpack and repack and missing time at the beach but was told there was nothing that could be done at that time I asked for the manager and got the same run around, after about 10 mins of complaining and threating to write bad reviews the manager pulled a room key from somebody else's envelope and told me to go pack our bags and call the desk and they would send a porter up to move us. before we could even finish without us calling he was at the door. my recommendation to any body wanting to stay at riu macao is to not accept any temp upgrades unless you want to spend some of your vacation moving from room to room.
From the moment we arrived, you feel like royalty. The service staff was amazing, always serving with a smile. The staff works endlessly to make everyones experience one to remember. The ocean was absolutely amazing, you won't be able to take your eyes off of the vibrant blues and the ocean breezes are perfect! My husband and I would wake up each morning, eat a big hearty breakfast, suit up and go from beach to pool all throughout the day. We never had trouble finding two chairs and a beautiful view. In our suits we would have lunch at the Krystal Fusion overlooking the ocean. I would highly recommend this restaurant. After lunch we spent more time relaxing by the pool and the ocean. The pool and beach side drinks were A+ In the evenings we would dress up and enjoy a meal at one of the specialty restaurants. We tried all them going back to our favorite- the steak house several times. It was a perfect getaway!

Good not great
From a service perspective, everyone was accommodating and nice. I have stayed at other Riu resorts in Mexico and more of the staff seemed fluent in English. At this resort in Punta Cana we found it a little difficult to communicate with a lot of the staff. At check in they didn’t have our room for us and tried to get us to move over to one of the other Riu resorts. We specifically booked this one because it was adults only and didn’t choose to move. Our room was comfortable and stayed very cool which we liked a lot. Our favorite meal was at the steakhouse when we had the lobster tails. The Japanese restaurant was our least favorite. Most of the food was very salty. All of the sushi rolls that the resort served had barely any fish and were mostly made of rice. The buffet was good, especially for breakfast. Lunch was adequate but mostly the same each day. As for the liquor, definitely nothing to write home about and they didn’t really have anything top shelf. No ginger ale in the entire resort as a mixer or to drink?!?!
Experience was top notch from the moment we arrived at 3 am. The employees in all areas of the hotel were friendly, happy and accommodated all requests. The food was excellent in all areas, a la carte and buffet. You could not say that you couldn't find something for your taste. The property was clean, well groomed and easy to get around.
Will definitely be returning! Love that this is an all adult hotel.
Thank you for a wonderful vacation!
Not a palace
We recently returned from a 7 night stay at the Macao - first time at an adults only which was wonderful. There were many great things about this resort but also some disappointments. We are RIU fans and this experience won’t change that, but having been to many other Palaces - this is not one. There is nothing “grand” about the hotel itself as the structure has the characteristics of RIU club hotels which it was built to be. We especially missed the feel of the beautiful lobby bar in the evening. The alcohol was sub par at best - few name brand choices as at Mexican RIU palaces. The pool drinks were slushy rather than frozen & melted ridiculously fast. If you ordered from one of the poolside servers they were warm by the time it was delivered. One choice of beer (light) is also ridiculous in this day when craft beers are the rage. Even add a dark beer option. On the up side the wines were not horrible and very drinkable.
Check in was easy and we appreciated the upgrade to the room. It was clean, the daily maid service by Ruth was outstanding - it was cleaned early and there were no issues with anything being disturbed. The daily restock of the fridge was also great! There are no ice machines in the newer building units closer to the beach - although ice buckets in the room???? This hindered late afternoon cocktails on the balcony. Really dumb!
The food was generally good but in past experiences there was more specialty seafood such as fresh or grilled rather than in sauces that had to be peeled with your fingers. Grouper seems to be the seafood of choice - it’s at every meal. Gala night did have cut up lobster tails which were very good and the lobster at the steakhouse was delicious. Lots of steak, chops etc. all good. Breakfasts were excellent- especially the homemade omelets! Desserts were the best of any RIU - think they actually use sugar in PC! They tasted as good as they looked! Ate lunch once at the Krystal - excellent!! Don’t waste time at the Japanese restaurant- bad from start to finish.
The animation team was the most visible we’ve ever experienced! They worked hard all day, every day to get folks up and moving and involved! From poolside games to dancing in the evening they are a friendly group. There are lots of things to do if you like being active. The shows are typical of all RIUs - some good, some not so much. Nice music in the evenings on the terrace area - very enjoyable.
We read lots of reviews prior to our visit and are honestly scratching our head at those who say the service was outstanding. That was not our experience at all. We have gone to RIUs all over Mexico for 20 years and this doesn’t come close to the service we’ve had there. Getting a mimosa with breakfast was like pulling teeth. No vodka to make a Caesar or screwdriver with breakfast. We were told it wasn’t available. Servers in the buffet overall seemed to cluster in groups (especially outside) and ignore you if possible. In fairness we did have few better ones during the week. Same with the servers in the evening -no one in a hurry to get you drinks. And yes we tip for every meal and drink so that was not the issue. We spent time with a group who were returning for a second year in a row who said the service had dropped dramatically in that time.
This resort and other sister RIUs are on the most magnificent stretch of beach with beautiful water perfect for swimming. You can walk forever in either direction. It could not be more perfect and alone makes up for anything else that was lacking. There are 3 pools -all clean and lots of sun loungers both around the pools and on the beach. The pool bar is a nice place to visit early in the day but there can be some loud folks who don’t get out closer to the end of the day. Typical as at most pool bars!
Perhaps if we didn’t have so many other RIU experiences to compare to we’d have been less sensitive to what we felt was lacking at the Macao. It was still a great week of vacation overall and we met great folks. Am sure there are many who will read this and disagree- which is fine - a review should reflect an honest opinion of YOUR own experience. This was ours. We will be returning to Mexico for our future vacations.
Loved the Rui Macao
We just got back from six days at this adults only resort.
We stayed at a Rui in Jamaica many years ago and had not been back to a Rui until now. This one far exceeded our expectations.! From the front desk with Alba, Robert & David to the pool attendant, Alex, to our exceptional servers at the buffet including Aquino, Pablo, Domingo, Rosario and too many more personnel to mention. All the staff was friendly, happy and went out of their way to make sure our experience was memorable. During the week we were there, 2 of our friends had birthdays and they made sure the evening was celebrated first class! And we ate at two of the specialty restaurants, Italian and steakhouse in addition to the daily buffet. The daily buffet had a great variety of food and very good. It’s the best buffet of all inclusive resorts we’ve stayed at.
The only thing that could be improved would be to add lighter weights at the gym. They had no weights under 8 pounds.
There were three pools and pool activities daily. And they made good drinks at the pool bar! Bermudez was one of our pool bartenders and Angel served us at the beach!
If you go to the Italian restaurant, make sure you have the lamb and for dessert tiramisu. They were both exceptional.
We would definitely go back to this resort. It was a good value and loved the adults only experience.
Clothing Theft from Hotel Room After Cleaning
I was really enjoying the staff, accommodations, food and sun until about the 5th day of our trip when we noticed that items of clothing that were hanging in the bathroom to dry and in our dresser went missing after our room was serviced to be cleaned. I know these items are replaceable but it really but a damper on the over-all experience which is unfortunate because everything had been great up until that point. There is a safe in the room, but unless they put locks on the closet and dressers, I'm not sure how to keep my items safe.
