Nice if youíre on a budget
The hotel was clean and the staff was nice. The food was not great and I got really sick about half way into the vacation. The beach was packed! You have to get there before 9am if you want even the slightest chance of getting a chair. So much seaweed too. We had a handful of Maintenance issues in our room (mini fridge didnít work, toilet ran constantly, and the radio was busted). They didnít fix anything when we asked. We did love the spa though and spent a lot of time there. The fitness center was also very nice. Drinks were okay and the service at the restaurants was fine. Nothing special.
The bed was pretty hard. We woke up with back aches every morning. Our fridge in the room was broken and we told the front desk 6 times and it never got fixed. The hotel grounds was beautiful and very well kept. The sit down resturaunts were difficult to schedule. Technically we should have gotten 3 but we were only able to schedule one.
Poor Food Quality & Worn Down Facilities
Old facilities, mold in places in bathroom, AC not very great in room. Grounds well kept but trash from rood repairs spread about. Slippy restaurant floors. Food not very good, poor flavor and quality. Steaks barely cooked above raw. Bland. Staff was very nice. Beach and pool were great.
This hotel needs updated. Rooms lack, sidewalks in poor condition. If you have a sports bar that's what it should be. Not a place that you have to have reservations to go to eat at. They really need to update their grounds and make it a more social place. Lost electric the first night. A villa caught on fire the second day. Please, update.
Not the same
This is our third trip to the Iberostar Dominicana, so clearly we had no problems with the resort previously. We usually splurge a little more and stay at Secrets Royal Beach lately but this was a good deal for our travel dates. Itís been 4 years since our previous stay at I.D. Some things have changed.
-the staff is wonderful. Every single person that is employed at the resort goes out of their way to do their job to the highest of their ability.
-the beach is still one of the prettiest stretches to look at and walk.
-WiFi is bad. Could only get it in our room when on the balcony hanging over railing.
-beach security. There isnít any. Had young children walking beach, stopping to do performance, than walking through entire beach area with hay out asking for $. Vendors yelling their excursions permitted to walk through entire seating area drumming up business, no kept to just shoreline. Older gentlemen allowed to sit down in middle of all seats a camp out for hours selling shells. Never had a resort not keep non-guests to public walk area only.
-have taken over half of the beach for their ďClubĒ. If I wanted to pay more for premium services and seats I would stay at a newer, high end resort. The I.D. was always more of a middle price resort and services. Because of the reduced seating, there was a day were there were no chairs on the beach. Not one. And everyone is crowded into a much smaller area now. There is no quiet end to escape to for peace. It is now the Club. And there is elevator music piped out at that end continuously. The activities staff keeps those that want to participate very happy and busy but it was always nice to have a quiet area to relax
-room. Our power went out at least five times. We had three men in our room on our last night for over an hour trying to fix it. Missed dinner reservations on final night. Couldnít get ready. Older room. No walk-in shower, no bidet, toilet right behind door making layout a bit awkward in bathroom.
-older pool. No swim up bar.
-food? Had extreme intestinal distress for four days. Passed out at lunch. In bed day and a half. Went to dr. who sent me to their pharmacy for antibiotics. Probably a parasite bc they worked. The dr. and pharmacy were very nice and competent.
-food. Reservations required at all specialty restaurants. They were nice but nothing outstanding (and Iím pretty negative in the food thing because I picked something up somewhere)
-other changes in 4 years. There was no longer a group dinner for Apple guests at the steak house which was always a good time.
-no small gift left on door step on final day which was always a nice touch
This is the only really negative review Iíve ever written on here. Iím not a needy traveler. Iím not a complainer. I just want everyone to have as much information as possible when choosing a resort. I feel the apple vacation rating of this resort is deceiving. Iíve stayed at 8 properties in the Dominican and have some room to compare them to each other now. I feel my vacation was a waste of money
The staff were very friendly, and the hotel entertainment team was great. The limited English by the staff was often frustrating. The pool is a bit rundown, the beach is lovely. Chairs are always available at both. The service at the restaurants was awful. For our 7 night stay, we got 4 reservations. 2 restaurants were closed. All 4 meals were bad. The food overall wasn't great in flavor, but the service in the restaurants was non-exhistent. All four meals, they took our order, but missed delivering a course ( or two). The service was not adequate. you would wait for a drink refill for hours, or never get the drink you ordered.
Great Place for a holiday
Perfect place for our relaxing and fun vacation. The beach was great with plenty of covered areas. The food and drink near the beach was awesome. The gardens and ponds were beautiful. The room was large, clean, and noise free. Little things that made this hotel special: free safe in room and stocked refrigerator in room; towel animals each night; always fresh towels for beach; all employees smiling and greeting you; bartenders remembering your drink; great effort from entertainment team; and grounds were beautiful. Opportunities: check in and concierge trying to sell you upgrades and time share (other places do the same but they are dressed different so you know they are trying to sell you something); face clothes are rare; canít bring food to room from restaurants; and place was repairing from hurricane so not all ponds were working and front atrium was in disarray.
Past its prime with attitude
The hotel is s howing its age. They have many people with their hands out but short on great service. Claudia with Apple is the person to buy tours from. She is honest and accurate. Avoid Iberostar Dominicana and Punta Cana. Use their other DR facilities. I would never go back and would consider other companies, esp on the south coast.
Rooms Where so old horrible needs updating badly rooms smell very bad. Forget about reaching anyone on a phone from your room nobody picks up ever. Bar was ok not many choices to have for drinks.
You will enjoy more if you spoke Spanish
I should have known but the primary language is Spanish. Most of the staff at the resort spoke only Spanish.
This was our first trip to Punta Cana and to an Iberostar Resort and we were not disappointed. We stayed 5 nights and would definitely go back. The resort was beautiful and the service was excellent. Very clean and comfortable. We did wish they had more seating for the specialty restaurants though. Overall one of our best vacations and would definitely go back.

Stayed from 1/13 to 1/20. Did upgrade to suite and Prestige club and well worth the money. Room large w/o any issues. WiFi great everywhere. Stocked mini bar and cleaned daily. Prestige club was great with shout out to Rosa on the beach for drinks and Ruth and Flora at the front desk. Special recognition to Flora for excellent service. Enjoyed Hamlet at the main buffett - very entertaining guy. Beach was very good. Buffett food just average to ok. Liked the seafood restaurant best. Steak house just ok as was the Oriental. Entertainment was good at nightly shows. Drinks good and varied. Worst of our trip was the excursion we booked. Did VIP Sanoa Island throught the resort and worst excursion we have ever done and we have done many. 90 minutes bus ride at 0700 after breakfast and several coffees. No bathroom on bus and none at destination until herded onto the catamaran by boat transfer so very long time. Our guide was multilingual and I could not understand anything he said even though I know several. Poorly organized. The snorkeling part was actually in the harbor but we did not know that until later. Boat was packed with no place to even sit. Again this was VIP. Stopped in shallow sandbar and was to see starfish but instead an old conch shell brought off boat to have pictures taken with. Next went to the "private beach area" at island along with about 900 other tourists. Had long walk through jungle to area where we ate. One bathroom functioning at this point with lines waiting to use it. Food was okay. Then told have 2 hours at beach and actually best beach was a good walk on down from where we were. Again this was exclusive VIP. Whole day was really awful and couldn't wait to leave and wish we had stayed at our resort as beach was actually better there with good drinks and food. Do not recommend period. We did use the Spa at resort as was very good. We would return if price is right but we like to visit various resorts and areas. There was some pressure for time share presentations but I made it very clear I was not interested.
Very nice place to stay. Very clean, very nice people, good food. A lot of stuff to do during the day. Nice pool. Rooms were very nice. Easy to book excursions. Bartenders always walking around asking if anyone needed anything to drink.
The only complaint I have when it comes to the Iberostar Dominicana is that I couldn‚Äôt stay longer! I have never felt so welcome at a resort and it was all thanks to the wonderful staff! I travelled along side 8 people and we were known by the entertainment staff as ‚Äúfamily white‚ÄĚ because of how pale we were upon arrival. The entertainment staff had activities set up pool side every day at 12pm and 4pm such as foam parties and wipe out courses. They also held a show every night in the theatre at 9:30pm which were hilarious and got everyone involved!
The servers were also incredible! A special thanks to Paulino, Wascar, and Juana for making our dining experiences so incredible. Every time we walked in to the buffet we had a table set up with flower petals on it waiting for us. Paulino and Wascar were there waiting for high fives and Juana was always blowing kisses! The food was also amazing with hot, delicious options for everyone (and we travelled with many picky eaters)!
Thank you to everyone at the Iberostar Dominicana for such an amazing vacation! We will all be back!
Over-rated hotel with so-so food - great beach though.
We'd been to Iberostars in Mexico and Cuba with great experiences, so we thought it would be the same here, particularly with our grandchildren in tow. We were in the main building and found it kind of dated.
The A la carte restaurants were uniformly terrible so we stopped going and stuck to the buffets. Descriptions didn't match what we ended up getting. 2 of us ordered ribs one night and received a 3x5 inch chunk of something that we couldn't even chew. Another night we ordered beef brochettes and got meat balls on a skewer that had barely been cooked. Seafood dishes seemed better but there were no rave reviews. The waiters just shrugged, so we kept walking out leaving the food barely eaten. Had wine delivered as we'd be finished our meal, or drinks not delivered at all. Buffets had better food.
Entertainment was better than past resorts, including a Lion King show that was well put together. Nice to have a disco and a small casino as activities for a change. Service was a bit of challenge sometimes because staff's English was so-so. This resort had an unusually large mix of visitors from different countries - may be the time of year, right after New Year's.
Beach was really nice and clean. Started out with no seaweed at all, then more by the end of the week. Lots of waves which was fun at first but got a bit tiring eventually. Lots of activities for the whole family to do what they wanted.
I'm not really one to write reviews, but I felt compelled after my latest experience.
I had read mixed reviews about this hotel, some bad and some very good, Thought I would give it a chance, based on mostly good reviews (Big Mistake).
I booked a 7 Day All Inclusive trip for my Spouse and 2 children (Ages 8, and 4 months), we arrived on a Friday, and during check in had requested an upgrade to a family room (Room #4156) was a nice room (Cost was $500 US for 6 nights), but was located beside the elevator, and all day/night all I could hear was the elevator shaft moving up and down (very annoying).
We decided to stick to the buffet, as it would be easier with the 4 month old. By Sunday both my Wife and I had become very I'll (Vomiting, Diarrhea, Cold Sweats) We tried to go to see the on site doctor (But it was a distance to get there as it was located closer to the lobby, and both times we tried the doctor wasn't there.) Luckily the kids both seemed to be ok, and the 4 month old is formula fed, however was challenging as both my spouse and I were both lacking energy just trying to get through the day.
I contact Westjet on Monday, and they were able to book us on a earlier flight (Wednedsay, instead of Friday) as both of us were still not feeling well. I did go to the front desk to tell them that we would be checking out early and requested a refund on my upgrade as we were leaving 2 day's early (the Manager Hector was good about it, he offered to refund me $148US of the $500 I paid) I really didn't have the energy to argue with the hotel manager, as I was still feeling quite ill, but normally would have asked for a much more substantial refund of the packager price as I paid well over $4200 for the week. (The Lobby Manager, didn't really seem to surprised or concerned that I had food poisoning)
We are home now, was able to get in to see my family doctor, and she has diagnosed both my spouse and I with Food Poisoning and are both on medication.
We travel south a lot, At least 2-3 weeks a year (Jamaica, Mexico, Aruba, St. Maarten, Dominican)
This is probably my last trip to Punta Cana, and also my last stay with Iberostar.
I will stick with higher end hotels from now on, as I really think you get what you pay for.
