The staff was friendly but I had to keep leaving notes for housekeeping to leave enough towels every day for the two people using the room.
Stay at the RIU Yucutan March 2018
We enjoyed our stay at the RIU Yucutan. The facilities were nice, clean and well maintained. The pool and beach areas were nice. Food and alcoholic beverages
The only bad thing was. A family sat next to us at the steakhouse and they did not eat their loaves a bread or use one silverware setting. When they left the table the waiter did not remove the bread or the silverware. It was left for the next guests.
Our only issue at the resort was with our Apple rep. We want to go on an excursion to Cozomel. James was more than happy to help. Our problem comes with the fact that he way over sold the trip. He was over stated what the trip included and how long we would be out. It turn out we stopped at two parks, neither not much to see, and were gone from the resort for over 12 hours, over two hours longer than we had hoped. We spent $260 on a tour that was not worth the money and could have be completed in a third of the time.
This was our second visit. I can’t say enough how wonderful the hotel staff are. So accomadating. Hotel needs a little updating
I have stayed at Riu's previously. This was as expected from a service and food/drink quality perspective. The whole resort decor is in need of updating. Room was very brighy and unable to dim lights for a warmer feel. Found cocroaches and small bugs in the room. Reallu hate the 2 beds pushed together concept. Took any romatic feel away.
noise out side our room and bathroom.
The way the rooms are set up inside, The toilet has a door, but the shower is open with a glass door with a very small wall. If you aren't staying with a spouse, there isn't privacy. It is very noisy outside the rooms. The doors are very heavy and slam LOUD!!!! We also heard the couple next door screaming at their kids up until 2-3 am. Everything echo's due to tile and cement.
Great trip to Playa del Carmen
Great hotel. Room a bit musty but no problem with that. Clean grounds, very well taken care of. Workers are constantly cleaning everything. All of our servers were top notch, smiling all the time, and happy to help with anything you need. Bottled water readily available. So many choices at buffet's for food, and plenty to drink. Beach was beautiful, seaweed definitely there, but they are always working hard to get rid of it--just seems like an endless battle, but that's the ocean for ya! Beach not rocky at all, that's the main reason we chose this resort.
Hotel needs work........
Hotel in general seemed to be lacking in general maintenance upkeep. Our shower door would not close completely, door handle on closet kept falling off, had friends that their air conditioning didn't work at all. Beds were extremely uncomfortable. Would not be a place that I would go back to......
Hotel was clean but could use updating and was not luxurious. It was very average.
Really liked this hotel.. The grounds were nice especially for a somewhat older facility. There were plenty of vegetation around so didn't seem too commercial. Beach was nice and a very good location from the pools, bars and restaurant. Food was just okay... Must get up really early to get a reservation for a couple of the restaurants. The highlights for us; proximity to the beautiful beach, excellent service, it's just a short walk down the beach to a totally uninhabited area.

This is our second visit to the Hotel Riu Yucatan. For the money we paid this hotel is excellent as such good value. The food was fabulous. As a vegan however there was nothing I could eat in the steak restaurant so my husband missed out on that one. Loads of choice in the buffet though. The staff were friendly and the rooms simple but clean. Great to see the howler monkeys again and other little animals scooting round the hotel grounds. No problem finding sun beds and an easy stroll to fifth avenue.
My 50th Birthday
A wonderful trip to Mexico with my friends and family for my 50th Birthday staying at the Riu Yucatan in Playacar
If your looking for a friendly hotel this is the one for you amazing staff going out of there way to help food and drink was lovely one amazing beach nice swimming pools and a nice size pool bar 9 of us went and we all had a fantastic time and booking to go back
Having stayed here May 2017 we had to return and again we had another amazing time. We stayed from 2nd - 16th May. I contacted the hotel to request the same room from last year room 6101 right next to the monkeys. This was ground floor and no issues at all from any creepy crawlies. The room was spotlessly clean with plenty of room to put all your clothes away. The food was not as good as last year but still no complaints as varied and plentiful (enough variety for everyone). Plenty of sun beds around the pool. Amazing service from all staff especially Erica at the middle bar by the pool and of course Santos in the main reception bar. Santos is one of the reasons we returned to this hotel, always laughing and interacting with all guests and working so hard. He is an absolute credit to this hotel. We are lucky enough to be returning in September but will be trying the Riu Tequila across the road. We are looking forward to seeing the new refurbishment but with the added benefit of being able to come and spend time in our favourite hotel the RIU Yucatan win win x. Thank you again for another amazing holiday and see you again in September.
Refurbished hotel has lost its character
We stayed at the Rio Yucatan for the third time in May. The hotel was refurbished a few years ago since we last went so I was hoping for an even better holiday than last time. We found the food and the service to still be of a high standard but the hotel has been ‘globalised’ with the result that it could have been a hotel in any country of the world. It has completely lost the wonderful Mexican feel that it had before! Of course the refurbishment was certainly necessary but I really wish they had kept the pueblo style it had before.
The entertainment was unfortunately quite poor. The entertainment team are young and enthusiastic. I really liked them but it felt a bit like a 1960s holiday camp. The early evening entertainment in the reception area was ok but very loud. There seemed to be nowhere to get a quiet drink.
I don’t want to sound too negative as it is a lovely hotel with great staff giving great service but I don’t think we’ll be back.
We have stayed at many of the Riu properties in the Playacar area. The Yucatan was as inviting as all the others. From check in to check out the staff were friendly and helpful. We like to mix our time on the beach and the quiet pool next to the lobby. There wasn’t much seaweed until our last day. Weather was beautiful. Spent parts of some days at the Playacar as well. We especially enjoyed their swim up bar.
At the Yucatan, the Italian restaurant was well worth the visit. We visited several times for lunch and dinner and loved the salmon. The resort is clean, our room was fantastic and cleaned thoroughly.
The evening buffet had many choices, nobody should ever walk away hungry.
The howler monkeys were a lot of fun to watch and enjoy.
We would recommend for couples and families.
We will be back!
