Riu Taquila 2018
Lovely place. Very old Mexican flair. Lots of wood, plaster and iron. Tons of lush grounds to stole. Beautiful happy staff.
Secluded with access to everything you want to do.
Tequila is across the street from the hotels on the beach, so there is minimal foot traffic to disturb you. It is restful, has pool activities and an assortment of restaurants to choose from. Being a family of resorts, you have access to the amenities of the other properties in walking distance, with shuttle service if needed. We spent hours relaxing at the beach in the sun and shade as well as walking to town for shopping and taking excursions for fun.
This hotel is awesome, although they need to add more power outlets in the rooms for electronic devices and the wi-fi was quite horrible, I never was able to post to Facebook about family events.
Riu Tequila Hotel review
We did not receive maid service one day. The room was very outdated and they brought in roll away beds to accomodate 4 adults in one room. The air conditioner went out one night as well and it was hard to maintain the temperature in the room. It was either really cold or really hot. Disappointed in the pool atmosphere. We visited other resorts that had more upbeat activities and more update facilities.
Good, yet far from excellent
The entertainment and general hospitality services are nothing short of excellent. The food quality was favorable but on the bland side, which is somewhat understandable, considering the large number of guests that they are trying to cater to. This hotel is not close to the beach and has no beach access except for walking through one of Riu's sister hotels (Riu Palace). This property has one pool on two sides of a center "cantina" but it was very nice with plenty of seating. There was an unexpected, and somewhat irritating, fee that was charged to us upon check in. It amounted to about $10 USD and we were told it was some sort of governmental tax that needed to be collected from all guests. While I understand the need to collect required taxes, this is something that Apple should have taken care of prior to our arrival instead of dropping it on us immediately upon arrival. The rooms were clean, well maintained and had very good water pressure. If I were to complain of anything (and I'm not), I would say the restaurant employees could be both a bit friendlier and a little more understanding of the guests' individual needs.
RELAXING STAY WITH WIFE
Great time to relax with the all inclusive deal.
The hotel, especially the pool area needs upgraded, cleaned. They need an actual hot tub since they advertise it.
Generally everything was nice and easy, however big minus was no access to the beach.
This hotel did not offer many amentities for a bachelorette party. We were misled by the excursion team in the hotel and was given an excursion for $65 that did not include parasailing or snorkeling because of the waterconditions. they should have informed us before we sat on the boat and spent the entire day going to an island just to walk around and not do any excursions. They should have had some alternate activities like ATVing or land activities but they did not tell us we could not do parasailing or snorkeling until we got to the island. We wasted an entire day on this excursion. The restaurants were not open long enough there were many situations where we had no food. The pool was extremely dirty it was disgusting. We felt cleaner going to the beach than the pool. There are these animals all over the resort that would chase us when we had food to the point where we had to throw our food away in the middle of eating. The bar staff was inattentive. At the club, one of the girls asked for water and was spoken to very rudely. The bartender literally threw a jug on the table in front of her when she asked where the water was from. He was extremely aggressive and rude.
Loved Riu Tequila
My wife and I stayed at the Tequila Oct 24-Nov 3rd. We have visited Mexico frequently over the last 20 years, usually in 5-6 star hotels. We were meeting our UK friends this year and they picked out the Tequila (which I think seemed to be a favorite for UK visitors). We were a little concerned with the 4 star rating, but agreed to stay there. What a pleasant surprise! It was like old time Mexico (which we like). This place is a find. Clean, great staff, good food, good entertainment. The beach is a 6 minute, pleasant, walk (or you can take the shuttle). This beach is one of the best I have seen, no rocks, hardly any weeds, clean water. We spent a lot of time there. We also enjoyed walking to Play Del Carmen, about a 30 minute (safe) walk through a gated community. What a great value. We will go back.
The hotel staff were very nice and helpful. However, the rooms were not as nice as I thought they would be. They were big but more basic. No nice furniture and not modern at all. The food for breakfast was good. Lunch was not as great, but dinner was excellent. Also, they did not offer that many restaurant or food choices. I also didn't like all the wildlife in the resort. At first it was cool to see but those animals were intimidating and would chase after you. Overall the stay was ok. Not terrible, but I expected much better for the price that I paid.

Me and my husband stayed at the riu tequila for 2weeks for our honeymoon and it was absolutely gorgeous, we loved that it was very authentic and traditional looking, this made us feel very relaxed and comfortable, we didnt have one thing to fault and when we heard that the hotel was being renovated we were quite sad as it is so unique and we think that is what appeals to people, there are hundreds of modern hotels to chose from but there are none like riu tequila, we really hope they dont change much as we are planning to go back in 2019 for out anniversary but if it has changed too much and modernised too much then I don't think we will 😟
This place is a traditional Mexican hotel, so do not expect modern. The traditional style is gorgeous, would not pick a modern hotel in Mexico. Staff are so friendly and cannot do enough for you. We were there for 2 weeks and was so sad when we had to leave.
Lovely Hotel - Slightly Dated
We stayed here in January 2017, our first holiday abroad together as a couple and we loved it. We stayed for 2 weeks which truthfully was long enough. We flew over with TUI and there reps were very friendly and very helpful when we asked about trips and advice on the surrounding areas.
It is a very safe area, they have gates coming in out and of the complex of Playa del Carmen and the drivers must hand over the licenses, I felt so safe.
It was only a short walk to the beach or alternatively you could catch the little shuttle bus which would go backwards and forwards for a few hours in the morning and again in the late afternoon. What was nice about the complex was that you were able to go and dine at the other RIU hotels as well you didnt have to stick to the Tequila which meant that when you were at the beach for lunch you could just use the hotels there.
The wildlife at the hotel was nice although don't leave anything sweet laying around otherwise they will have it!
I felt that the hotel was slightly dated both in the reception area and in the rooms, however it gave more of a historical mexico feel than the other hotels. Also another massive bonus was the fact that you could help yourself to the mini bar and you would not be charged for it! That is right NO CHARGE! Heaven if you ask me!
The option of two pools was nice, one was an activity pool and the other was a relaxing one, we stayed round the relaxing pool as we just wanted to chill and it also had a swim up bar which is just what holidays are all about!
As I said we went in January and the weather was lovely and hot no storms and no rain, it was perfect.
The choice of having 3 restaurants to dine at was a nice option to change, one was a steak restaurant which we werent so keen on, one was a chinese restaurant which we liked and the other was the main buffet. A wide variety of food was to be had at the main restaurant. A different kind of carvary every night, pizza, chinese food, burgers, hot dogs, so much fooood! Not forgetting a chocolate fountain for dessert!
I would recommend going to anyone who is wanting a lovely relaxing holiday in a beautiful area.
Ok I guess
I didn’t spend that much time in this hotel if I’m honest, but the time I did was ok. The rooms are spacious and comfortable the hotel has a very Mexican feel about it and that’s the thing I loved most!! But I believe they are renovating now so I think it’ll be just like all the other hotels now, that have like a Miami feel to them, which will be a massive shame.so usually day to day we would go to the beach which meant going over to the Yucatan but whilst I stayed here I fell seriously ill. As I was gettin better I decided to stay in the hotel one day and got in to pool, as soon as I got in I got out, there were drinks floating in the pool, the pool was warm, there was lots of tiles missing in the pool, and cigarette butts around the pool edge. The staff at this hotel more so the bar staff, are amongst the rudest!! The bar staff I felt were laughing at us all the time and talking about us, unless you tipped them then you got served last!! Shouldn’t be like that you shouldn’t have to tip every single person for doing their jobs. But sayin that, the bell boys and the maid were lovely they were probably the friendliest we met. The shop in this hotel is expensive, we walked maybe 5/10 minutes down the road to the little market if we needed anything it was so much cheaper. Also the beach is a short little walk away, down by the Yucatan it’s a nice walk on a morning.
Great hotel with a lot of wildlife
We stayed at the Tequila for 2 weeks.
The rooms are clean and the mini bar is restocked every second day. We asked if the regular pepsi could be replaced by Pepsi Max and that was no problem.
There are a lot of coatis, colorful birds, squirrels ... at the hotel - this was really awesome (and one of the reasons why we booked this hotel).
The food is really out of this world! So much choice - we loved the mexican corner (which meant, that we ate mexican 3 times a day ;) ).
The cocktails are also really good and there's a lot of choice.
Overall the staff is also really polite and friendly.
I would really recommend this hotel!
