Riu Tequila was created with attention to decor, beautiful gardens, and wonderful pool areas, and takes the limelight when it comes to affordability and family-friendly concepts! Located across the road from the Riu Yucatan and Riu Playacar, it shares exchange facilities so guests can also enjoy the non-stop entertainment at two more RIU Resorts. Just a short distance from the beach, a trolley winds through gardens past a raised gazebo bar to the beach club.

Old Mexico is featured throughout Riu Tequila. The lobby mimics a small village with grand pillars, arches, iron lanterns, and ceilings painted in swirls and decorated with mosaics. A trolley winds through lush tropical gardens past a raised gazebo bar in a courtyard and down to the beach club. The pool area is Hawaiian-style with boulders and waterfalls. Great carved doors open to the main restaurant, Jalisco, in early Mexican style with international buffets. The informal Lupita Restaurant offers poolside snacks.

This family-friendly resort offers a great vacation value, from live entertainment to an array of sports including non-motorized watersports. Kids will be entertained in the RiuLand Mini-Club and enjoy the playground and supervised activities. Adults can enjoy the nightlife at the popular La Piata Disco with guests of the other Riviera Maya Riu Resorts. Complimentary 24-hour WiFi is also available in the common areas of the resort (available in rooms for an additional charge).

Accommodations are comfortable and have features such as a fully stocked mini-bar and liquor dispenser. Junior suites with a living area are available, perfect for a little extra room.

Just returned from 2 weeks stay in the Tequila. This is a charming hotel that tries to have some Mexican character rather than be a modern hotel that could be anywhere in the world. The staff are very professional and friendly, however we would especially like to thank the following staff for making our holiday special. Bar staff David, Silverio, Rey, Felix, Rosy, Dalia and Jeremiah from the restaurant. The entertainment team also work extremely hard and, though they cannot please everyone, do a very good job considering this is a hotel theatre and not a professional theatre. I hope the refurbishment does not spoil the character of this wonderful hotel.

Just to warn anybody who has booked this hotel between April 3rd and July 7th 2018 that it is shut for refurbishment -we have only just found out by accident and had it confirmed via email from the hotel management, the tour operator Thomson denied it until we went into the shop and confronted the manager who then rang his head office and had it confirmed, apparently they're composing a block email to let everyone know together . We were lucky and have had our hotel booking moved to the riu yucatan , but as more people find out rooms may become scarce . Hope this helps someone - and SHAME ON YOU THOMSON .

Lovely hotel, wonderful service

We have just returned after a 2 week break here. It's difficult to fault the hotel and the service. The rooms are very good and cleaned well every day. The waiter service is brilliant. All the staff are friendly and can't do enough for you. There is a wonderful atmosphere around the place. With 2 pools, 3 bars and a night club, 3 restaurants to eat from of an evening (buffet, steak and Asian restaurant) your always have choice. The beach is a 5 minute walk away or you can get a lift in the trams that run all day. The only reason I didn't give this hotel a 5 is that often the evening entertainment was not that great, but as I said, you do have other options. A great holiday!

Fantastic holiday

Just got back from an amazing 11 night stay at the Tequila. The hotel is set amongst well maintained, lucious tropical greenery almost like being in the jungle! We had a fantastic room in block 4 which has a short walk to the pool and restuarants - not noisy at all! The rooms a spacious with more than enough storage for a couple on on an 11 night stay. There's a tv with a few english language channels, a safe that is pretty much standard hotel safe size, i.e. plenty of room for a couple of laptops plus whatever else valuable you bring along. Also a mini bar and optics for gin, vodka, tequila & rum. The rooms themselves are a little dated, my wife went 10 years ago and said it hadnt changed, however, they are well maintained and very clean (rumour has it that the hotel will undergo a refit next spring but there's no suggestion of what that might involve). There's decent air con and a ceiling fan which you can change the speed on via a chain. The pool is lovely, set amongst tree's so you may need to move about or get loungers near the pool if you want to worshop the sun all day. Alternatively, use the beach where there are literally thousands of loungers you can use (also the facilities of the Rui Yucatan and Playacar hotels). The beach isnt far to walk but we used the golf cart bus :-) The food is excellent, some reviews suggest that is gets a bit similar but they literally do everything you can imagine so its up to you to bring some variety to it! We used the pool restaurant (which becomes the Steak restaurant at night) both are great, also the pool BBQ. Other than that we used the main buffet restaurant. A special mention for those with Celiac disease or requireing a Gluten Free diet (like my wife), Gluten Free bread, fruit loaf and crackers are available at breakfast next to the juice bar. At other times/restaurants you may need to ask for it. There's plenty of food that is obviously GF but if unsure then ask as the staff were very happy to point out what you should avoid - 'sin gluten?' is understood perfectly. They do GF wraps and GF tortilla chips but also others containing gluten so ask the staff - like I said they were great. The bars are great as are the drinks, they do some international brands like Captain Morgan Spiced, Gordon's, Beefeater, Bacardi and Johnny Walker so if you want them then just ask otherwise you'll get the local alternatives which are perfectly fine. Would recommend a Cuba Libre with Bacardi or a Morgan's Spiced Mojito :-) The Blue ocean was my favourite cocktail lol Wifi - we paid to have it in our room, it also works around the pool too but is tempermental there - depends which way the wind blows! It works out at about £5 a day for 4 devices on the 7 day option (they ought to do a 10 and 14 day option IMHO) but hey ho - it worked very well. Surrounding area is littered with hotels, most of them Rui hotels as well as private homes and at least 2 golf courses. Theres also a small parade of souvineer shops and excursion sellers a couple of minutes from the hotel (turn left out of the hotel). They sell all the usual trinkets and also hats, sun cream and insect repellent. Prices are similar to the UK. These shops are significantly cheaper than the hotel shop and the airport souvenir shops. I'm told the excursions are half the price of the tour operators too! Exercise - my wife and I did a few early morning runs to shed some of the calories from the eating and boozing. If you turn left and run to the area's security gates and back its 2.5 miles with aptly named Strava segements for each direction! We also did a loop around the area that works out at 3.6 miles - just follow the main ring round. Be aware that its very hot and very humid so get out there before 6 if you can! That sounds early but you'll find yourself up early anyway due to the time difference :-) We also used the gym at the Rui Yucatan over the road. Fairly basic but they have most kit you could want. Wildlife - don't forget the insect repelent! You can buy it in the afore mentioned shops if you do chances are you'll still get the odd bite so bring some cream and or anti hystamine pills to reduce the swelling/itch. There's also Coati's in the grounds, these are like racoons and eat everything so dont but food down around the pool and maybe throw away left overs at the restaurant rather than the small bins around the pool - dont feed them! Otherwise a few claps has them scurrying off. The hotel staff do chase them off now and again.

Brilliant Hotel - Brilliant Country

This was my first trip to Mexico and first use of a Riu hotel, and I have to say both the country and hotel were brilliant. Check in was in record time with a nice refreshing punch drink, you were told where you room was and given all the details you needed. The bell boys numbered your cases and they arrived at your room within 15 minutes! Rooms were spacious and clean, nothing to complain about, we had three rooms all next to one another in the far end of the hotel, very quiet and a nice view of the adjacent gold course. Rooms had a mini fridge, re-stocked every two days with beer and soft drinks, also tequila, rum, gin and vodka optics. Restaurants, we used the main restaurant, pool restaurant, pool BBQ, sports bar, Asain restaurant and Steak house. We didn't use the Mexican you had to book for but heard good things. the main restaurant for breakfast and dinner had a good selection of food, waiters tried to sit you in the same area each day, they learn what you drink and have things at your table as you sit down. Pool restaurant, where lunch was served a smaller selection of the main restaurant, good selection and quality. The pool BBQ was a nice extra I didn't know about; it had chicken, burgers, hot dogs and salad was a nice change if you didn't want to go in from the pool. The steak house was brilliant - good food and quick service, try and get there 20 mins before you want to eat, the same for the Asian restaurant again, brilliant food. The sports bar had two fridges full of burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches and fruit which were available 24 hours a day. The bars were brilliant, quickest service ever in an all inclusive hotel, nothing too much trouble. If you want branded spirits just ask or you'll get whatever is closest. Cocktails amazing, and shots out of this world. The sports bar, again open 24/7 for all types of drinks and hot drinks are available from all bars. The severs will do their best to get you drunk so be aware!! :) Staff - all the staff were so very friendly, and always working hard, cleaning, maintaining and nothing seemed to be too much trouble. The entertainment team were amazing - always on the go and always making sure you're happy. Big shout out to Aldo, Rickie and especially Allan - but all of them amazing and so very talented. We had a couple of hours where the hot water didn't work, but this was rectified quickly and didn't cause too much of an issue. Yes, there are animals around the pool, but a clap makes them run away quickly, just don't feed them or they'll be back. Take lots of mozzie spray as after it rains they are out in force - remember you are in the jungle - they sell something called "off" which works well, cost 235 Peso's approx. £10. You get free fast WiFi in the lobby and theatre, which is very good, payable in the rooms apporx £25 for a week, but super fast and more reliable than Sky broadband at home! We had two days of torrential rain, but after than we had mostly 100% sunny days with clouds and the odd thunder storm - not the hotels fault and when it didn't stop raining they made sure they had stuff for you to do. The beach is a 5 minute stroll down a very safe walkway, if it takes you longer you either walk to slowly or got lost! There is a buggy which can take you down, however, the walk was nice. Night entertainment is in a covered outside theatre so can be warm, I wouldn't recommend trousers, smart shorts for dinner and you'll be set for the night (vest and swim shorts aren't permitted for dinner time), the sports bar is next to the theatre and is air conditioned if you need 5 minutes out of the heat. The refurbishment next year is needed, not because of the anything major, just some tired looking area in places - but very clean! All in all, a brilliant hotel and just what I expected if not better in some instances. Not related for the hotel, however the Chitzen Itza trip is very good. Jungle Maya trip is brilliant and Coco Bongo - gold member 100% worth it!
