Riu Tequila Hotel review
We did not receive maid service one day. The room was very outdated and they brought in roll away beds to accomodate 4 adults in one room. The air conditioner went out one night as well and it was hard to maintain the temperature in the room. It was either really cold or really hot. Disappointed in the pool atmosphere. We visited other resorts that had more upbeat activities and more update facilities.
Good, yet far from excellent
The entertainment and general hospitality services are nothing short of excellent. The food quality was favorable but on the bland side, which is somewhat understandable, considering the large number of guests that they are trying to cater to. This hotel is not close to the beach and has no beach access except for walking through one of Riu's sister hotels (Riu Palace). This property has one pool on two sides of a center "cantina" but it was very nice with plenty of seating. There was an unexpected, and somewhat irritating, fee that was charged to us upon check in. It amounted to about $10 USD and we were told it was some sort of governmental tax that needed to be collected from all guests. While I understand the need to collect required taxes, this is something that Apple should have taken care of prior to our arrival instead of dropping it on us immediately upon arrival. The rooms were clean, well maintained and had very good water pressure. If I were to complain of anything (and I'm not), I would say the restaurant employees could be both a bit friendlier and a little more understanding of the guests' individual needs.
RELAXING STAY WITH WIFE
Great time to relax with the all inclusive deal.
The hotel, especially the pool area needs upgraded, cleaned. They need an actual hot tub since they advertise it.
Generally everything was nice and easy, however big minus was no access to the beach.
This hotel did not offer many amentities for a bachelorette party. We were misled by the excursion team in the hotel and was given an excursion for $65 that did not include parasailing or snorkeling because of the waterconditions. they should have informed us before we sat on the boat and spent the entire day going to an island just to walk around and not do any excursions. They should have had some alternate activities like ATVing or land activities but they did not tell us we could not do parasailing or snorkeling until we got to the island. We wasted an entire day on this excursion. The restaurants were not open long enough there were many situations where we had no food. The pool was extremely dirty it was disgusting. We felt cleaner going to the beach than the pool. There are these animals all over the resort that would chase us when we had food to the point where we had to throw our food away in the middle of eating. The bar staff was inattentive. At the club, one of the girls asked for water and was spoken to very rudely. The bartender literally threw a jug on the table in front of her when she asked where the water was from. He was extremely aggressive and rude.
Loved Riu Tequila
My wife and I stayed at the Tequila Oct 24-Nov 3rd. We have visited Mexico frequently over the last 20 years, usually in 5-6 star hotels. We were meeting our UK friends this year and they picked out the Tequila (which I think seemed to be a favorite for UK visitors). We were a little concerned with the 4 star rating, but agreed to stay there. What a pleasant surprise! It was like old time Mexico (which we like). This place is a find. Clean, great staff, good food, good entertainment. The beach is a 6 minute, pleasant, walk (or you can take the shuttle). This beach is one of the best I have seen, no rocks, hardly any weeds, clean water. We spent a lot of time there. We also enjoyed walking to Play Del Carmen, about a 30 minute (safe) walk through a gated community. What a great value. We will go back.
The hotel staff were very nice and helpful. However, the rooms were not as nice as I thought they would be. They were big but more basic. No nice furniture and not modern at all. The food for breakfast was good. Lunch was not as great, but dinner was excellent. Also, they did not offer that many restaurant or food choices. I also didn't like all the wildlife in the resort. At first it was cool to see but those animals were intimidating and would chase after you. Overall the stay was ok. Not terrible, but I expected much better for the price that I paid.
The staff was very friendly. I have two gripes even though overall it was a great experience. It was hard to figure out which restaurants we needed a reservation at and when and where to make them. And that I thought the hotel was on the beach when it was across the street, about a ten minute walk. It was a beautiful beach though.

Just Excellent - What a surprise!
This was the best vacation I have ever gone on. The rooms, service, food, and staff were perfect. I told my wife not to expect much for the price, but was blown away. I started planning my next vacation while I was sipping on a pool side beverage. Just excellent! What a surprise!

This was our third holiday to Mexico the previous two were to the Riu Yucatan. The Tequila although not on the beach was by far a better hotel. The grounds were more spacious and loved the wildlife, although some people think of them as a nuisance. The hotel is to undergo refurbishment in 2018 hope they do not spoil the character of the hotel and get rid of the wildlife.
Wonderful relaxing stay
We stayed at this hotel 27/12 through to 10/1/18 and had a wonderful relaxing stay. The staff are marvellous, courteous, friendly and very service focused. The food offering was huge, buffet, waitered, the Mexican and Lupita was excellent food wise, choice and service. Our room was ground level, spacious and kept spotless as where all the grounds and pool area. The walk to the beach was. Lovely, we didnât try the other Rui hotels, as we were very happy in the Tequila! The walk into town was nice exercise after all the food and drink? We would recommend this hotel as a very good 4*. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
Lovely hotel and staff - will be returning
This was my first time in Mexico and I wasnât sure what to expect. The reviews of this hotel were a bit hit and miss but in all honesty it was fantastic!
Our room was spotlessly clean when we arrived and was kept immaculate throughout our stay - thank you to the lovely Nancy. We had a fridge full of beer, soft drinks etc on arrival and our very own mini bar - tequila, vodka and rum :) The only thing that was missing was bottled water. You had to ask at reception whenever you wanted bottled water - it wasnât automatically replaced like the soft drinks were.
The food in the main restaurant was much better than any other all inclusive buffet I have encountered. So much variety and very fresh (and I was very pleased to see the staff at the entrance with their bottle of hand sanitizer). Lunch in the Lupita pool bar was also very nice on the couple of occasions we went there. We spent a lot of time at the beach near RIU Playacar and had lunch there instead (I loved being able to use their facilities as well as our own hotel).
There were three speciality restaurants to choose from as well as the main buffet - The Steak House, Asian restaurant and Mexican restaurant. We visited all three. The steak house was lovely. I had a huge sirloin which was cooked to perfection. The Asian all you can eat style buffet was also delicious. The Mexican was disappointing. The food was bland. I had the chicken fajitas - there was no spice, no sauce and it wasnât very warm.
The evening entertainment was fantastic - I even enjoyed the kids disco! The team are so talented. The dancing was amazing, the costumes were gorgeous. Every night was different. Me and my partner never usually watch the hotel entertainment but we were there every night! Special mention to Ricky - he was my favourite đ
We went to the on-site nightclub on a couple of occasions. It was good although the music was a bit repetitive.
The best part of staying in this hotel is the cotes. They are adorable. Anyone who complains about these delightful little creatures needs to give their head a wobble! We also passed through the RIU Yucatan on the way back from the beach and saw their resident howler monkeys. Defo a must see.
The actual resort of Playacar is lovely. There is a shopping plaza about 2 mins down the road or you can take a 20 min stroll to Playa Del Carmen (30-45 mins along the beach). 5th Avenue is a must visit for anyone who loves shopping as much as I do!
I would 100% recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Mexico and I will be returning! Thank you to everyone there who made my first trip to Mexico so enjoyable.
Check in was efficient and the room on arrival was large and clean. The bed was comfortable and the room had plenty of storage space. We ate at the buffet most nights and found a good selection to choose from. Most days we used the facilities at the sister Riu Playacar hotel as this was on the stunning beach. The entertainment was ok although we ventured into Playa del Carmen most nights. I would definitely stay here again although with the upcoming refurbishment I hope they retain some of the Mexican feel of the hotel.
This is our second year in a row for going to this resort. We love the place so much it is like being in a small village because of the way the buildings are set up. The staff are excellent, we talk to a lot of the staff and very few people have been there less than 10 years for working so if the company is taking care of their staff, the staff are taking care of us. Apparently this summer theyâre going to be renovating and upgrading a lot of the rooms and a number of other things on the property and it will just be so great to see. When weâre there it feels like a small village with the way the property is laid out. Only a 5 minutes walk to the beach. Other guests that weâve spoken to and met again this year have been coming to this resort for multiple years. There is some wildlife. Itâs great.
