Our Destination Wedding at Iberostar Bavaro Suites
cerod720, New York City, New York
Fri Sep 15 10:40:27 EDT 2017
I wish the overall rating came with specific categories because it's difficult for my husband and I to give an overall rating based on our experience at this resort. My husband and I had a destination wedding at Iberostar Bavaro Suites this last August, parts of our experience were fantastic and other parts were not so fantastic. If you're looking for a great place to go on vacation with the family, I would recommend this resort. I would give a 5 star rating to the waitresses, waiters and kitchen staff at this resort without hesitation. They were the nicest people there and were over the top with their services. They do not get paid much yet they are the hardest workers there. We had almost 50 guests stay at the resort with us, to attend our wedding, and everyone had nothing but great things to say about the waiters and waitresses. By the end of our stay, our children were hugging the staff like they were family. The men who drive the carts around the resort, taking guests from place to place were also amazing and very hard working. They were very funny, happy and accommodating at all times. Zelani was another employee worth mentioning. She was in charge of setting up any group activities or excursions during our stay at the resort. She was very energetic, organized and personable. The room service was average. Some of our guests had complaints about bugs and air conditioning and the staff their tried to fix these issues. The water pressure and cleanliness in the bathrooms were not so great. Luckily the pool area and spray park were so much fun that you didn't spend too much time in your room. The food and drinks were good. The shows in the main lobby were terrible! If you have children, I would suggest not bringing them to these shows, they are very inappropriate and raunchy, definitely not "family friendly". One of our biggest and most noteworthy complaints is the lack and disregard for medical attention if needed. Unfortunately, during our stay, one of our guests, who suffers from diabetes, was in need of medical attention. He was sent to the resort "doctor" and before explaining what was wrong, the doctor told him that he would not see/talk to him unless he paid an initial fee of $200 and he (the doctor) could not guarantee anything. He said after accessing the situation then our family member would have to pay additional money. In a nut shell, the doctor sees the people at the resort, in need of medical attention, as a walking dollar signs. My husband and I had a terrible experience with this "doctor" as well. We have a 2 year old and during our time at the resort, my son woke up in the middle of the night, with a rash and was having difficulty breathing. We rushed him to the lobby and asked the receptionist to contact the doctor. The receptionist responded by telling us that the doctor would not be able to see us unless we pay $300, and this is before seeing our child. We asked to speak with the doctor on the phone and sure enough, the doctor told us that the initial charge is more expensive because it was the middle of the night and he was sleeping! Clearly, my husband and I were very annoyed that as a professional, this man did not have a care in the world that our two year son was sick and in need of medical attention. Another guest at the resort, that was not with us, overheard our phone conversation with the doctor and became involved and frustrated for us. They had children and were speechless when they heard the doctors approach. We agreed to pay the money because of the condition our son was in and in the end, the doctor looked at our son and told us that he doesn't have the medication my son needed and we were sent to one of Punta Cana's emergency clinics, a 1/2 hour away from the resort, where we had to pay even more money for medical attention. As parents, we were completely disgusted by the medical staff at the resort. Even though the food, drinks, wait staff, kitchen staff, bartenders were fantastic, this experience with the medical staff is one worth writing a review about, in order to have other families go through a similar experience. If you are considering this hotel for a destination wedding, I would not give it a 5 star rating. During the planning, which we started a year in advance, I did not receive the assistance I was expecting (based on other people I knew who had destination weddings at other resorts). Most communication was done via email and throughout the process, I was never given one specific contact person/ wedding coordinator, which is usually how the planning is done. My first coordinator moved to a different dept. and then someone new took over and I had to explain any planning all over again. Then that coordinator stopped answering my emails and I had to call the resort directly because I had not heard from anyone in over two months. It was not untl March 2017 (planning began in aug 2016) that one person became my coordinator. She (Estefania) was very good with answering my emails and was very accommodating throughout the planning process. Upon our arrival, I was confident that everything was going to go perfectly and Estefania was very reassuring as well. But things did not go as planned once we arrived. The rehearsal dinner (in the cajun restaurant) was very long and not because we wanted it to be. We scheduled the dinner for 7pm and did not receive our food until after 9pm! That's a long time to have people (and children) waiting for dinner. Then on the day of the wedding, the bridal party was scheduled a room in the spa, for the girls to get ready and for the photographer to come and take pictures. As I stated before, my husband and I have a 2 year old. He was with me and my bridesmaids while we were getting ready. The spa knew he was with us and were fine with everything until he began to cry. When my son cried, they came up to our room, during our photos and told us that we must leave immediately. Now, I understand that a spa is a place for people to relax BUT 1. the resort and planners knew my son was going to be with me from the beginning 2. Knowing this, the resort and their planners were the ones who placed us at the spa, I did not.request this 3. I had over 50 guests staying at this resort and the spa was profiting greatly from our wedding and our guests... they should have not booked any appointments for the 1 hour we were scheduled to be there. 4. If they did not want children there, they should have asked us to leave when we first walked in with the child in our arms. After we were asked to leave, my coordinator was difficult to get in touch with. Since you are only assigned the one coordinator, the day of the wedding, that one individual is responsible for making sure every aspect of the wedding runs smoothly. If anything goes wrong, its difficult to have it handled because the coordinator is too busy and overwhelmed. My bridesmaids and I were not able to complete our photo session and had to go back to one of our rooms to finish getting ready. The wedding ceremony ran late for no given reason. But it was set up very nicely. My only complaint about the actual wedding ceremony itself was that they allowed outside people to walk past during the ceremony or stand very close to our guests and watch. At one point a man with a small monkey walked through. You cant make that kind of stuff up. lol. The DJ did not play the songs on our playlist at all during the cocktail hour and was then given the wrong list of music to play for the reception. Luckily he checked with me and we made the corrections but he still didn't stick to the playlist. Again, since there was only one coordinator, there was a lot of room for errors. For example, a random woman who was not part of our wedding group, walked right into our reception and stole our seating cards for our guests during the cocktail hour. I spent a decent amount of money on our seating cards. They were a mix of glass bottles with sea charms and sand dollars with our guests names/table numbers on them. This woman walked in, stole them, and left and our coordinator said she wasn't sure if she was a guest. The cake was delicious but was not decorated the way they showed us in the pictures and my cake topper (another thing I purchased) was returned, broken in half. Thank God we had an amazinggggggg photographer (Nicola Bisogni) and the best family and friends because they made up for all of this. All in all, the things that went bad were not the worst things that could've happened, but they were also the result of carelessness. These are things that could have and should have been prevented. If I knew any of this information (from another review for ex.) prior to picking a place to go on vacation and have a destination wedding, I would reconsider my choice. But, I would def. keep the same photographer and bring the aforementioned great staff members with me :)

Came back for the second time with my family and I was almost just as impressed as I was the first time around. The rooms were great and a great location between the beach and restaurants. The service the hotel provides is so great and just like the first time around, those who work there greet you like you are longtime friends and make you feel so comfortable. Through the hotel we were able to organize a trip to Santo Dominigo which was an amazing day trip I highly recommend. Overall, if you want an amazing trip with your family and want to be treated like family, come to this resort!

Birthday meal

Thank you to Olfa from guest services for arranging balloons in the kabuki restaurant for my husbands birthday. Sadly that's where anything special ended. There was also another diner who had a birthday celebration in the restaurant, who the staff made a fuss of and sang Happy Birthday to, sadly they seemed to forget about my husband so his Birthday meal went by without anything special apart from the balloons organised by Olfa!

Good pool, lousy beach

Here are some tips for people traveling to Dominican Republic: 1. Do not share a van - pay extra for private shuttle service. 2. Book a hotel that has air conditioning on all their dining area. 3. Do not book a hotel that has people complaining about too many seaweeds. 4. Lock up all valuables - all staff can come in and out of your room. 5. Tip them $1 per person in your group. That should suiffice. Here are my tips for Iberostar Bavaro Suites: 1. Your "concierge" is a phony timeshare salesperson. Dismiss him/her immediately and demand your tickets for restaurant reservations (make sure to get the tickets, or no dinner for you other then the sub-par buffet). 2. If you love the beach, stay away from this hotel. Seaweed is a huge problem. This is the worse beach I've visited so far in DR. If you have little kids, the kiddie pool and icecream bar is a big plus. 3. Use the barbacue and food facility by the pool during lunch. Much better then the buffet and a lot cooler due to the sea breeze. 4. Watch out on the far end of the pool - it's pretty deep and there are no signs, so if you can't swim, you will drink some pool water. 5. Drink beer. All alcoholic beverages are just flavored water. 6. Recheck the exchange rate when buying at the shop. They will try and rob you. 7. Don't rely on any kind of room service. they often forget or it just take too long. 8. If you likke the night time show, this hotel is not for you. They have the same singers and dancers just singing and dancing different era of music. It gets redundant real quick and they are not even that good. 9. The specialty restaurants are "slightly" better then the buffet. I feel that they could've done better with all this hassle of making reservations.
