Our family vacation to Punta Cana and specifically RIU Bambu was tainted by the fact that our entire family got sick after eating at one of the restaurants in the property. However the food in general was fair at best. I left my vacation sick and disappointed in the quality of the food offered and served.
We recently stayed at the RIU Bambu for 7 nights. There were 4 different occasions we went to shower and there was no hot water. Supposedly it was fixed our last night around 7PM so we were unable to shower after our beach day before dinner. The next morning before check out when we showered; the water was barely warm. Having no hot water 4 days out of 7 when we wanted to shower was not appreciated. We complained at the desk with no adjustment to our bill etc. We talked to our Apple rep. and he didn't really seem to want to pursue anything on it for us either. There was construction going on and they said this was the reason for the hot water issue but guests should have been compensated for the inconvenience.
The stay at the Riu Bamboo was comfortable/safe and a lot of fun. We booked this resort specifically for it`s No SpringBreakers policy----Several days after our arrival around 300 plus Springbreakers showed up and the peaceful beach/pool was a thing of the past. Riu Bamboo does not enforce this Rule. Also--long pants a dinner --not enforced. Dinner Reservations--won`t take them We booked a Deluxe room---which was a mistake---the standard rooms are updated and have a nicer layout--we ended up moving to a standard room even though we paid for "Deluxe" Over all had a great time--
Riu Bambu and an excellent bargain for your money
This was our 6th stay at Riu Bambu and we keep going back because of the beaches and the staff. The resort is very nice and they are making wonderful upgrades to the resort. The people are absolutely the best.
The hotel is very clean, staff very friendly people. The pool amazing, clean beaches with the ability to walk over to other hotels. Food was good, plenty of choice, I can't see that anyone would be stuck finding something they liked.
This hotel needs a major overhaul. the rooms smelled moldy. my clothes smelled.the food not good. the bed was comfortable though. found out more information from other guests than from hotel desk. amstar agent was helpful. excursions are a must. spoke with other guests from other RIU hotels, who had better things to say about their hotel. a lesson learned.
Location is perfect! Beach is outstanding! Staff is so kind and friendly! Omelette maker in the main dining area is great! My family loves him! Also our house keeper was so sweet! Fransico and Pablo at the beach kept us happy! They are great! Only negatives are the beds (too hard) and the food isn't the greatest. But, we've been here 3 times and we will go back!
Hotel Rui Bambu
It is a massive Hotel, the food quality was poor, Breakfast was O.K. lunched were terrible, hard to find anything good, much less warm. The dinners were hit & miss, the best restaurant was the Mexican. An exception was the spread they put out for New Years Eve, that was good. Our rooms were O.K. , nothing special, but at least 2 blocks from the Beach. Great Beach! Pleanty of Palm Trees & shade, lots of chase lounges. Very Good weather
Food was horrible and repetative in lack of quality and taste. By third day, I was ready to leave hotel since food appeared to be prepared to ease kitchen's preparation rather than to please guests. The specialty restaurants were no better: similar food in quality. Front desk and maintenance were lackadaisical; noone came to repair room phones which were not functionable during entire vacations even after several requests to front desk; same for leak in the ceiling on last night of stay.
Hotel advertised as free Wi-Fi in lobby area. Found out that only two can log on per room even though we paid for 4 people in room. Beach was the best part of the hotel. Nevertheless, I will NOT ReTURN due to the poor quality of the food and lack to respond to issues raised by guests. Lastly, the waiters were less than responseive;they almost appeared as if they did not want to serve you. For instance, they clean the dinning table for you and leave without placing silverware, plates or drinks. On a few ocassions I had to get up and chase a waiter to provide me with a glass of wine, asking him whether wine was served with the meals(japanese restaurant). Overall experience was less than memorable which leads me to conclude that an all inclusive package is not the way to go. Food and service throughout your vacation makes or breaks your enjoyment. I must say this vacation was A BAD ONE WHICH I WILL NOT REPEAT!
I was told by an apple representative that the small size luggage could be carried on and was free. I was charged $90 down and another $90 back. We didn't want to check baggage and have to wait for our luggage so we used the small free size and were still charged. I have those receipts and would like to be reimbursed. The hotel was ok clean wise. The rooms smelled very moldy. Our fan fell while spinning. You can tell they recaulk over gross caulk and repaint over mold. I understand that this is probable part of the climate and likely hard to avoid. I believe about half the stall liked vacationers and half did not. They seemed annoyed with us and we're pretty easy. Our maid was awesome. Front desk was very helpful. The onsite Apple guy Reggie was very helpful. Our excursion was amazing. The Riu Bambu charged $32 US dollars for a $8 bottle of suncreen and their gift shop items were all way way over priced. I had a massage and it was same price as the US and it was awesome. Riu bambu had wifi and that was nice. Frontier flight was a direct flight so that was awesome.
Overrated - very disappointed.
This hotel was disappointing and rated higher than it should be by Apple.
I had an issue at check-in regarding the internet. The staff was not helpful at all, and actually avoided me. The apple rep was already gone, and when I tried to call, I was hung up on. The apple rep was there only limited hours, disappointed that he was not there when I needed him.
I ended up paying for internet even though I was told it was included. I was unable to get my work PC to connect on multiple days. the first day, they told me they would call their IT and to try again in 20 minutes. I did and was connected. Next day, same problem. When I called this time they never corrected it and I was stranded without internet that I paid for. Infuriating.
Then, the maid service was good when they actually came. Some days they came as late as 5 pm...we were already coming back from the beach. Another day we requested service 3 times, and they didn't come until my husband asked an actual housekeeper.
Service in the restaurants was not good. I had one situation where a waitr ran into me after I just filled up a mug with hot water from the coffee machine. It spilled on me and him...my hand and leg were burned. Instead of even asking me anything, he threw down the silverware he was holding and yelled, like it was my fault. It was TERRIBLE. this was in the Mamajuana restaurant at about 3pm.
The beach was not cleaned at all, there were cigarette butts everywhere. We have small kids who like to play in the sand, and they were finding this these every day!
I am extremely disappointed and will be seeking some portion of a refund. Definitely not worth the money spent here. I was counting down the days to come home. How sad is that?

Hated every minute
Generally the staff were very polite and very very helpful yet More like a noisy clubmed or a cheap naff 18-30 holiday .....
Only ever been all inclusive once before and should of learnt from that experience that if you have drinks free and open all day you encourage louts.
Says something when you have free minibar and spirits in every room but not a kettle ! By 9 - 10pm the bar areas were just heaving with drunk folk.
As this is also supposedly a family friendly hotel it's an odd mix.
In the day time pool areas (when you can use them) are just loud thumping music and loud announcements by the "staff" trying to get you to play their games ! (Butlins 1950's style) plus the sales guys trying to sell you tours or diving lessons !
Food okay and plentiful (buffet style) 4 other food areas but non very appealing.
I had asked my tour operator 3 days before coming out here to see if I could of had my money or a credit as the hurricanes were coming. Now I know I should of just not bothered coming as it's just drinkers heaven and not for a relaxing holiday.
As I told Thompson holidays "I will never be booking with them again" and that's a nailed on fact from now. Although i don't think they will be bothered as they didn't want to know before we were sent out here.
NEVER AGAIN !
First time visiting Dominican Republic and it did not disappoint ! Warm temperatures and cold drinks, amazing. Reception staff very welcoming and friendly, as well as being more than happy to help with any problems during the stay (e.g. air con issues/mini bar top up).
Food in the Colonial(main restaurant) is lovely and there is something different to try every day, including themed nights. There were 6 speciality restaurants, including steak house, Italian, asian, Spanish, Mexican and another. Only problem with them all is that you cannot pre-book each restaurant, as other hotels do, instead it is a first come first serve - and given a buzzer to take away if restaurant is currently full. Overall, amazing food and worth the wait.
All of the pools (4+kids) were kept in a good condition, with 2 of the pools offering a pool bar, as well as pools having in-pool sun beds. The entertainment happened around the two main pools. Unlike other hotels, you were not hassled around the pools or beach by any staff who were attempting to sell you excursions, treatments, etc. They accepted your no and wished you a pleasant day. Music was around the two main pools from 10-5, during entertainment hours.
Only comment on the bars is that they were very generous with the alcohol ! Which was amazing. Other hotels either water their drinks down or only put small amounts in - not here!! All bar staff were very friendly and smily, seeming to enjoy what they were doing - even sometimes dancing along to the music playing. Amazing range of mixers, cold drinks, cocktails and hot drinks - including self service facilities,
Francis - Main Restaurant
Mambo & Supermini - Animation Team
Ariel - Reception
Overall, our holiday was amazing and we really enjoyed it - despite the tropical storms due to Hurricane Irma & Maria. We also went on the Outback Safari excursion & to COCO BONGO. Both were amazing!
Only criticism would be that the photos of the main pool area (pool bar/ grand stair entrance) are not of Riu Bambu, they are of the neighbouring hotel Palace. Also, the water park is also in a neighbouring hotel which you have access to.
Lovely Hotel, be careful of stomach upset.
Very quick and easy check in. Room was away from the main reception which was lovely and quiet. Room was kept clean and spotless and drinks replenished every other day.
Main pool can be busy, but 3 other to choose from. Food is very good too much sometimes, if you cannot find anything to eat from all the restaurants then you have a problem. Staff work very hard and long hours, they always have a smile and try their best to help if you have a problem. If you know Spanish then that would help but not essential.
We booked our excursion through our Tui Rep and we went to Saona Island, the excursion was all day and we all had a fantastic time, beautiful island.
The Hotel kept us informed with Hurricane Irma and we were not concerned. It is Hurricane season and they are prepared.
The beach is lovely the tide can be quite strong so keep an eye on little ones. Beach vendors are all authorised and they will not pester you if you politely say no.
The hotel has been completely refurbished and upon reading previous reviews were wondering what we were going too but can honestly say it was one of the best holidays we have ever had.
I would recommend this hotel to anyone.
Punta Cana International is a lovely airport it is a bit of a mission getting out of the airport and a bit chaotic as you are unsure what to do. Tui representative was found and coach was waiting. Very smooth.
My partner and I had stomach upsets and he is now currently awaiting results and is not allowed to return to work yet. I do not think the Hotel is at fault and possibly something he just picked up possibly from the sea.
Pleasant 2 weeks
The Rui Bambu has just had a revamp and on the whole was good.
On arrival we were checked in quickly, however as two couples we were in completely different blocks when we had requested rooms together. Reception tried to accommodate us but said they best they could do was move one of us to a closer block, we ended up in blocks 19 and 20 . Good sized rooms and cleaned every day. Fridge with beer and fizzy drinks and 3 bottles of water. Our friends asked for a kettle but they have only 3 for the whole hotel. We had taken a travel kettle with us and I would recommend you do this if you like an early morning cuppa but kettle took 20 min to boil so give yourself time.
No welcome drink on arrival which was a little disappointing as we were hot from the 8 hr flight then the transfer to hotel which was about 40 minutes.
Lots of choice in main restaurants and of good quality however not always hot...warm at best. The Al la carts Steak house good,Chinese good, Spanish fair, Mexican not to our taste, The Italian on our occasion was terrible the food (fish was uncooked) pasta overcooked and slimy we left and went to the buffet.
We went on a buggy adventure and had a great day once it got started a lot of hanging about waiting to get our buggy.
Saona Island was OK but we didn't think it was worth the money we paid.
Hurricane Irma attempted a visit, but apart form some rain and a bit of wind fortunately did no damage.
Staff the first week were amazing Yashfe one of the waitress did her utmost to keep our glasses refilled and she was amazing, she went on leave for our second week and there seemed to be a lack of service in the evenings and you had to go to the bar yourself... not an issue for us, but after the great first week seemed a little disappointing. Entertainment team worked hard but the "SHOW SHOWs" were not the best.
Pools could get a bit noisy, but the quiet pool was great if you had enough for the shouting.
The Bambu is in a complex of Riu hotels on the site and |I think we had one of the better hotels. I couldnt see what "extra" staying at a Palce gave you except access to all the Riu on the site.
You could us e the water park at the Nabaio but we did not try it after being told it was a bit fast and furious. It didnt seem to be busy when we passed.
We found them quite expensive for the holiday stuff being sold. The ones in the hotel were less expensive than on Caribbean street. which surprised us.
The last 3 days of our stay they started to build another restaurant which made the beach very noisy with JCB and diggers going all day which was a shame as we had not been informed this would be happening, and the beach was lovely, some seaweed churned up bu Irma but this was buried by said JCB.
On the whole an OK hotel but probably wont return, but give it ago for yourself, not 5* but could be with a few changes.
Amazing holiday and great hotel, didn't want to leave
Me and my partner visited Riu bambu on the 2nd September for 2 weeks. After reading mixed reviews about this hotel we kept an open mind as different people have different experiences. What can I say we had an amazing 2 weeks at this hotel, breakfast was great, there were 2 buffets open for lunch and then 6 open for the evening meal plus the sports bar was open with snacks 24 hours. There were no problems with the food I found it all really nice, buffet doesn't really change much but there's enough variety for anyone. There are 5 pools plus a kids pool. The 2 pools near the lobby were lively pools so there's always aqua aerobics, dance games etc and a pool foam party on a Friday. The other pools are much quieter so there's something for everyone. Rooms were nice and clean and beds were comfortable. Each room has a mini bar which gets replenished every 2 days. However we had to ask the reception to get it stocked up if we wanted any more. Beach was really nice! I wouldn't say this hotel is quite a 5 star only for little nit picky things such as slippers and bath robes, room service and pool service etc, but it's nothing that we missed or was bothered about. We had an amazing time here and would definitely recommend to anyone visiting Punta Cana!
