Was very pleasantly surprised on our hotel. I've stayed at the dreams in Punta Cana on my last visit, and this hotel was hands-down way better. I would suggest it to anybody. I got back and raved about our fabulous vacation

We'd stayed at the RIU Republica two years ago and it was great! This was was good just not great. The food was good and the staff was very nice other than a couple towel guys. Biggest complaint was the BOTTOM shelf liquor they served. I couldn't drink it. Pretty bad when the best you have is Smirnoff vodka.

we've stayed here numerous times so it feels like home. although it's been cosmetically redone, the basics are lacking. we had a shower drain problem and a toilet overflow problem. as a non smoker i would love to see no smoking areas or specifically designated no smoking areas. i think the riu palace resorts have gotten much more attention than our bambu resort.

The only reason real complaint is that the rooms smell like mildew. There were several other reviews saying the same, so we weren't surprised. We had two rooms together and didn't want to lose that, otherwise we would changed rooms. The shower and sink wouldn't drain in the other room. The staff is friendly! The resort is huge! Great onsite shopping! Plenty of seating at pools and beaches! Good food. Good stay for the price, but will pay the extra next time. Reccomend Oceans Blue or Sunscape over Riu Bambu.

I have stayed at several different riu resorts over the last couple of years and this has been the worst by far. The hotel staff were very unfriendly and not helpful at all when it came to questions and concerns. The food was very poor always cold and had little flavor. The rooms were kept somewhat clean but the beds were very uncomfortable. I had asked for an extra blanket for my room and got told they had non left. I then asked for extra pillows and never received them asking 3 different nights. There is no security around the pools so on my third day some personal items were stolen including my backpack. The front desk did nothing and proceeded to tell me that it was not there problem. Overall there was no help with anything I or the people I traveled with needed, the food was terrible and the service was terrible.

i will definitely come back great personnel (Kalvin front desk thanks for all your help )this hotel has all it takes , great grounds, great food
Customer Rating:

The hotel is old and the room and bathroom were old. The resort is big. We were fortunate that we were close to the main building. It really could have been a long walk for our family. The buffets became boring for a week. They only had one ala carte restaurant

Open a night and we always had to ask at the front desk each day which one was open that evening. The resort worked well for our family and the staff was good.

Definitely not a five star resort
Candice C, St Andrews
Fri Feb 22 09:28:39 EST 2019
I felt that I should write a review of this hotel as I have traveled quite a bit and I was really surprised by this resort being considered a five star. It was bad enough tha t my travelling companion and myself started keeping notes to warn other travelers expecting a five star and getting much less. Check in: Sunwing's package stated you would be greeted with a welcome drink. Well, not so much. We were not greeted by friendliest of staff and they seemed to feel inconvenienced that we needed assistance getting our bags to our room (isn't this standard at a five star??). Then when we asked where our room was, we were pointed in the general area of a sidewalk and told to look about three buildings down. That was it. It wasn't three buildings down but we found it. Bring a lot of small bills for tipping as the cashier never seemed to have any. The Rooms This place is set up like an apartment complex. It is ok, but it definitely doesn't have that tropical resort feel. THERE ARE NO COFFEE MAKER IN THE ROOMS! Seriously. You have to go walk to the lobby to get a coffee. I have never been to a resort without some type of single serve coffee maker. The plug is there for it on the counter/bar area. The resort is pretty big so you have to walk quite a ways to get a coffee. THERE ARE NO TOILETRIES IN THE ROOMS - Bring your own shampoo and conditioner here as you get a bar of soap and a shower cap only. The beds are the hardest beds I have ever slept on - we had to get blankets to pad them as it was the equivalent to sleeping on a concrete floor. There is no alarm clock in the room so make sure your phone is charged if you need an alarm. Speaking of which, there is only one plug on one side of the bed for this type of thing. Not on both sides of the bed as is standard. Our mini-bar was only restocked once - on the second day of our stay and we never saw anyone again. Staff The first two days were awful. We tried to say hello and smile at staff and they would scowl and look away. Even if you tip regularly. When we called the front desk to request blankets - at first they didn't answer the phone for over an hour and then when they did, were so rude about the request. I'm not sure if the staff are paid less at the Riu but they seemed very bitter and angry. I have stayed at another resort in Punta Cana and it was a completely different experience. On the last couple of days there seemed to be a staff change and the staff we encountered seemed a bit friendlier. The housekeeping staff for our room was friendly and did a great job. No complaints there. Grounds/Pools: As mentioned, the resort is very linear like an apartment complex. but the grounds are well manicured. There is one pool with the Sand Bar that does not have bathrooms by it. I would stay out of that pool as I can only guess how many people don't feel like walking to a bathroom several minutes away. We stayed away from the two large main pools as they were always quite loud and rowdy. We ended up at a small pool with the Blue Bar. We tried to make the two female bartenders in that bar smile or laugh, but they weren't having it. Didn't matter how much you tipped them. Staff do not clean up empty cups during the day so there were cups and garbage all over the pool deck. Food: The food isn't bad but it isn't spectacular either. Just average. The coffee ice cream is awesome and there is a great selection of fruit! I ended up sick while there and we aren't sure if it was the food or something else. I am still having lingering issues and will be going to the doctor Monday to figure it out. There is very little for snacks outside of buffet hours. There is the sports bar which has nacho chips and nasty cheese sauce, as well as a cooler with some hot dogs and hamburgers that you can heat up. Other: The pool party was a lot of fun. Great variety of music to appeal to all ages. Lots of dancing happy people and the staff there were in the mood to party and much friendlier. Just watch the drinks. They are crazy strong! The weather was great which made the trip still enjoyable, although we were exhausted by the end due to poor sleep. The shops onsite were great for souvenirs and actually cheaper than some of the other areas that we shopped at during excursions. As a tip - if you need change ask one of these places as they could usually break larger bills for you. It would take a lot to get me to ever book a Riu resort again based on what I experienced here.

Pretentious to rate this resort a 5 star resort

I have nothing negative to say about this resort. Clean and modern, good food, vast choice of restaurants, nice clean pools, decent drinks, beautiful beach, hard working employees, decent service. But not worth what we paid for. Not 5 stars. 3 1/2 at best. Misleading indeed! Check in was a breeze. In line at 14:55, checked in by 15:05. Nice clean room, mini bar stocked with soft drinks and beer. 4 bottles of liquor up on the wall. Hard bed and loud A/C though. BUT stay away from block 27 (we were at 2713). It's right by the lobby so buses, garbage trucks and delivery vehicles loudly drive by at all hours of the day and night. Ran out of hot water on day 4 and the A/C leaked through the ceiling days 4 and 5. We ate at all of the restaurants. The steak house is over rated, the fine dining experience a deception (WAY TOO SALTY and slow service). The Chinese was really nice (Francisco was quite charming!), the Mexican and Italian were really good. The quiet buffet was our favorite choice in the morning (the big buffet was way too loud!!!). Stay away from the burgers. I love burgers, the ones here were BY FAR the worst that I've ever eaten. Cold and pink!! Our favorite was the Mexican for the quality of the food and for the quietness of the place. Speaking of noise. This a very very loud resort. Not because of the people or the parties, but because of the resort itself. Every little noise echoes endlessly, whether by the pool or in the restaurants or in the lobby or in the rooms. The Mexican restaurant had full length curtains absorbing most of the noise, making for a much more pleasant experience! The beach was awesome. No lifeguards seen during our stay, we could swim at our ease. Very clean, very little algae, beautiful clean water. Borrowing kayaks was a breeze, borrowing a catamaran was a little more of an adventure. We thought somebody would drive this thing for us, as in all the other resorts we've been to. Not the case, he just pushed us off and said 'Bye bye!' and left us stranded and panicking. Loungers can be hard to come by both at the pools and on the beach.... Loved the bingo. 19:30 sharp every day! No flowers anywhere. Plenty of trees and grass and bushes but not one flower to be seen. We found that odd. Saw many many beautiful varieties a couple of weeks earlier in another resort just down the beach.... We will not be going back. Stayed at another resort a couple of weeks earlier, paid one third of the price that we paid for here at the Riu Bambu and got more bang for our buck. But we really did enjoy our stay here. Expected 5 star treatment, got 3 1/2 star service at best. Cue the Online Reputation Manager

My wife and I are both vegetarians. This is the second Riu Hotel we have stayed at. They have great food, terrific desserts and lots of food for vegetarians. The service is excellent. The ambiance is excellent. Well worth the price.

I was in Punta Cana two years ago, stayed at the Dreams Resort. Came back home not really caring if I ever went back to the Dominican Republic. But through Apple vacation I found a great deal. This was hands down one of the best vacations I ever had. Our room was clean and comfortable, the servers were fabulous in the restaurants, Dennis with Apple Vacations did a great job with our tours, Hotel people were friendly and cordial. I can't Rave enough about how great our vacation was. The weather was way better in February then in November, temperatures in the 80s. All in all it was a fantastic vacation. I can't wait to get the opportunity to come back again. The only disappointment for our eight days was the entertainment, or lack of it at night time. Again, I give this 5 stars because I can't find anything wrong with our whole entire vacation. Thank you Riu Bambu for a wonderful vacation!!!!

This is a follow up review to my September review. Have to wait 3 months to review again. As I said in last review that on a whole this hotel is ok. However the last week was a bit of a nightmare. Pool staff tipping cleaner into the pool well after 9am whilst children were swimming in it. Constantly complained to Rep as this was dangerous. Grandauhter covered head to toe in a rash and had to be kepted out of the pool. Also the toilets at the pool are filthy until about 10.00 am, even though the cleaner is there before 9 am. Constantly found staff in the disabled toilet, one having a shave. Complained to manager only to be told that the pool doesn't open until 10am.So I asked him why when the pool closes at 6pm are people still in it at 11pm screaming and hollering. We were given 350 dollars each as a refund and told to keep it quiet as other guests would complain and expect the same. Wish I'd have seen that the palace next-door accepted children because I would have gone there and paid the extra. Have added some pictures but they are not very pleasant. The pool ones show the chemicals floating on the pool (top middle and right) Won't be going again.
