Apple Vacations Traveller Reviews
We found excellent service and fabulous food at this hotel! It was quiet and relaxing and close to downtown if you wanted to walk about 10 minutes. The pools were clean and beachfront windy but very nice. We enjoyed all 5 restaurants serving ala carte meals and not buffets! We also liked having a spa and gym on the premises. We were very pleased with this hotel and will be going back!
10th Anniversary vacation
Absolutely cannot say enough how awesome the Royal Hideaway was and our vacation overall. Amazing food. Excellent staff. Just awesome.
Good beach,nice room, service opportunities
the beach was great, rooms, service an opportunity. Could not get a reservation to eat 1st night, reservation messed up 4th night, manager did little to resolve. Told could not wear jeans, even though website simply said long pants. Wilber at Azia Restaurant excellent - resolved our many issues there when hostess and manager did not. Not pleased overall with experience when compared to Apple rating.
Great staff, excellent food. Beach was outstanding. Reservation system at restaurants was horrible. The resort was half full and it was like pulling teeth to get a reservation the day before.
Our stay at the Royal Hideaway was excellent. We chose it because it was small and served excellent food. There were many pros and the only con was it was difficult to get a reservation for dinner as it got closer to Christmas and busier. The food was marvelous! The staff worked hard to see our needs were met.
Apparently this hotel is under new management and I'd say it's taken a turn for the worst. The staff is amazing but the breakfast and lunch was terrible. At the very least if there was a tasty buffet, it wouldn't be as awful. But there wasn't. The dinners were the best food, so if you did the liquid diet in the daytime and eat dinner you could get by. The drinks were top notch! But for the price we paid per person it was not worth it. I go on vacation to eat amazing food 3 x a day, not only for dinner.
The room was comfortable but smelled like mold. I didn't believe this resort could be 6 plus golden apples. There was just something missing.
The beach was beautiful, powdery sand, no rocks.
The staff is exceptional it's not their fault that the hotel is under new management, they go above and beyond. I wouldn't stay here again.
Everything from the accommodations to the service at Royal Hideaway were outstanding!
The most relaxing place.
The place was great and we will be back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
absolutely a fantastic hotel for a much needed get-a-way from too much snow this winter. facilities/staff = fabulous. couldn't have been any better.
In general the Hotel was just OK. Nothing spectacular, the beach was very nice, the service was poor and the food was worse.
We were unable to pre book baggage or seats on the flight through the website. Sun Country on international flights requires baggage check and seat assignments to be done 24hrs prior to the departure, on domestic flights its within 24hrs to departure. Due to the website you are unable to make these arrangements. We ended up paying for First Class. Upon arrival we had to wait approximately 45 min for the Apple reps to figure out our semi private transfer to the Hotel. The Hotel itself is mediocre, the pillows are the size of a shoebox, we ended up with about 14 of them. The linens were see through (most likely because of age and not because of quality) and no mattress pad, hmmm, a little gross. A bamboo matt in the room was broken and I ended up with bamboo shoot in my toe, okay, 1st day, no big deal were on vacation, right? The food, we walked out of the Italian restaurant because the food came out cold as it did in most of the restaurants. The steak was like rubber, mignon to fajita. The fish meals we had smelled like fish, that means its not fresh, but hey, the chicken was good, lol. One tip, for beach service grab a green flag by the pool, put it up and they may come serve you. Its like Pancho’s but the food is a little better at Pancho’s. One other really nice thing about beach service, they have other vendors that offer to sell cigars, weed, and other recreational drugs, and you don’t even have to get out of the infinity pool. I didn’t partake but they were very friendly. If it rains there is really not much to do, there are no bars open and technically they only have one bar, it doesnt have a bar and its more like a cave, it opens at 4pm or so. By day 4 my Fiancée was sick and we had to call the Dr, the concierge will tell you $150 US but ended up being $260 US, but he was really nice. By day 7 I was sick and we were glad to be heading home. I did get engaged though, so it wasn’t all that bad.
In summary, I wouldn’t recommend the Hotel or Pancho’s
Left no room for complaining
Just loved it

So understandable why people return to this outstanding hotel year after year
The Royal Hideaway is a wonderful hotel. The gardens are beautifully kept and everything is well maintained, even beach is immaculate. All the staff are professional but friendly and very helpful. Any request or question was quickly sorted by our amazing concierge Viviana, nothing seemed too much trouble and we were always greeted by her friendly smile. Each villa has about 24 rooms and has its own concierge. There are five very different restaurants serving excellent food by efficient, friendly staff and a theatre where you can have dinner whilst watching a show. Reservations for dinner are required each night through your concierge which initially we thought strange but actually worked really well and meant they were not too busy. Each restaurant also has its own bar so again you are never kept waiting to be served. The main bar has live music early evening and later on and the fun barman will mix you any cocktail you can think of! All in all this outstanding small, excellently run resort hotel has to be the choice if you are planning a trip to the Yucatan peninsular . PS see separate review but on site is ProDive a fantastic 5 star dive centre. One of the best we have dived with.

Palazzo was amazing!
My friend and I stayed here for 6 nights and once we went to Palazzo we couldn’t stop raving about it, especially the baked Alaska. We were so impressed we rearranged our final dinner of the week to be there even if it means dinner at 10.
It took a little bit of time to settle in, but our concierge Graciela helped us navigate some minor issues, eventually scheduling us room service to deliver coffee every morning at 8. Housekeeping was excellent and very responsive.
The only downside is every restaurant requires reservations, making every day have to plan around what time dinner was. It’d be nice if there were a more casual show up when you want kind of place. Despite requiring reservations we never found a full restaurant, so it was confusing when we couldn’t have the time we wanted.
The event staff were awesome, including a midday aqua Zumba class which made us smile (and burn off a couple of drinks). The Mexican party night was a good representation of Mexico and had good food, though small portions.
Overall, this is a very friendly resort that we have enjoyed very much.
Royal Plancar Hideaway,
Beautiful hotel. Service and dining was especially good. Great staff and beautiful grounds. Spacious sand beach. Would highly recommend . Had a great week. Within walking distance of Playa del Carmen . Five restaurants with a variety of cuisine. Our concierge Grace was very helpfu throughout our stay.
Exceeded our expectations
We are typically “cruise” people so this was our first all inclusive experience and we were very pleased. The room and bathroom were large and luxurious. Also a nice patio was attached to our room. They offer 5-6 cuisines restaurants and they all were very nice and the food was delicious and the portions generous. The staff was very accommodating and helpful. It was quiet and peaceful.
Would I return? ... Absolutely!
Good, but not worth the $$$$
Royal Hideaway is a beautiful, small resort with, arguably, the best beach area in the playacar area. Very nice, clean, with good pool options. It's got incredible staff who really do go above and beyond. Wonderful people.
There are quite a few issues though - some are common to any resort, some are more specific. The biggest issue for us was the food. A lot of people comment that it's 'gourmet'...but it's only gourmet compared to resort food. Much of the food we had, especially the international cuisine, had major issues with the temperature. It seems that some of the food may be prepared in advance and reheated - I can't understand any other reason why the temperature of the food is so cold.
Generally the Mexican food tended to be a lot better than most of the international fare, which was nice - but it would have been nice to have had more Mexican food options. It seems like much of the food is tailored to the older clientele who seem to make up the bulk of the visitors to the resort. It leans on presentation and a kind of faux molecular gastronomy (foams) that went out of style in 2006. More honestly prepared food, with less pretension, would have been appreciated. The best food we had the entire time we were there was when we left the resort and went in to Playa Del Carmen proper.
The room had an issue with a strong mildew smell coming from the air conditioner - we didn't seem to notice it much while we were there, since we acclimated to the smell, but once we got home it was very clear - all of our clothing, luggage, and personal items that were in the hotel room acquired a musty mildew smell. Likely an issue with improper moisture removal in the air conditioning system.
The WiFi was quite slow and the coverage was not very good and it constantly needed to be re-authenticated. Also the shower doors in the hotel rooms do not have an adequate rubber seal around them, so water leaks out under the door all over the floor - if you have a bath mat there it becomes sopping wet almost immediately.
The nighttime entertainment was, unfortunately, quite poor. Most of the shows appear to have a shoestring budget and, despite the performers giving it their best shot, don't really translate into anything particularly engaging or exciting. Again, these seem like shows that may work for the older crowd that seems to make up the majority of the visitors to this resort. Entertainment is probably better being sought in the downtown of Playa Del Carment, which is much livelier.
Despite these issues my wife and I enjoyed our time at the resort – largely because of the service and housekeeping staff, who did an exceptional job. The resort grounds are lovely and the beach and pool areas are fantastic. However the value for the money spent ultimately didn’t add up very well – it’s marketed as a luxury resort but it doesn’t quite live up to truly luxurious standards. It’s very good – but not great. It won't be a repeat visit for us.
