Nov. 27 Under Construction - but still good

We have stayed at Allegro before and it was recently bought by Barcello. We were not told under construction when we booked in June, and expected the worst. They are investing in the property and we were first people to stay in our room. A/C worked great. Hot Water was good. The only restaurant (other two were closed) that was open was the buffet by the pool. About 25% of the property was under renovation, so the "1" restaurant was not too was good and we had great time. Downside: Kids club was not open. The evening entertainment was OKAY, three good nights - Magic, Mexican, Circus I have to say, lots of familiar faces from the staff. Still Friendly as ever. We will go back.

Absolutely the Best...

Occidental was in the process of redoing a number of rooms in the resort. Our time share was a two bedroom overlooking the ocean... We were not able to get into this because of the reno's and we stayed in a regular hotel room... Still it was a super place... the ocean is spectacular... the view is superb. Loved it... And will be back...

The resort has been undergoing renovation for months since its acquisition by the Occidental chain from Spain. We booked our rooms 3-4 months ago with the understanding that renovation should be done by 11/18. However, one week prior to our trip, we were informed that none of the First Club rooms were ready for guests due to delays in renovation. So, we were stuck with a standard room with 2 twin beds for a family of four, instead of the one-bedroom suite we were entitled to as time share owners. On the bright side, the resort did offer us a free, extra owner's week to be used at any affiliated resorts in the future. The newly renovated rooms do have a nice contemporary look The services in general was average. There were only two restaurants because the others were still under renovation. Food choices were poor, Sometimes the tables were not even set when guests showed up in the morning for breakfast at 7pm! The Kids Club is non existent when we stayed during Thanksgiving week. The only appealing features of this resort is the beautiful long stretched beach and its close proximity to downtown. Compared to Occidental Xcaret where we stayed , this one is definitely a disappointment. We would recommend the former if you had young children because it has five pools and a small closed cove for snorkeling, making up for its lack of beach area for the guests. And, the food is MUCH better!

Total disappointment

Beach getaway @ Allegro Playacar after reno

We booked Allegro, but were moved to a stunning room in Barcelo Maya Beach due to construction renovations. (Separate review will be posted for Barcelo.) We subsequently elected to move to the Allegro when they reopened. The purpose of our stay was a friends wedding in Playacar, and while the Barcelo was fantastic, we were just too far away from our group of friends. We thought we would be happier close to them at Allegro, but the honest truth is that the resort was not ready to reopen when we arrived. We found the resort nicely appointed with modern decor, and cool comfortable rooms. We stayed in room 1204, but we had no hot water for 5 days. It was barely warm. When we visited there were more construction workers than guests. They got a lot of work done during our week there, but it came at a tremendous cost to the guests ability to relax and enjoy. We parked ourselves as far from the construction noise as possible on the beach and tried to focus on the positives - and there are many. The beach was absolutely stunning. 2 good sized pools (we enjoyed the one by the beach.) We had great beach drink service, no problem with getting lounge chairs or shade due to low occupancy. The entertainment team was an energetic group having fun and engaging guests. I participated in beach Yoga, aqua fitness, and a few pool games. The kind and friendly staff throughout Allegro was their best attribute. Special mention and top marks to Umberto who was so attentive with fresh pineapple juice for me in the morning, and always a happy smile, and many laughs. The snack bar was the only restaurant open for the first few days of our stay. This was not ideal but given the limited number of guests and stage of construction it was understood. Food was good but limited options. A few days later they opened one a la carte upstairs above the lobby. We only had 1 dinner at the resort in a week, but we had good food and great service from the twins Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Danny Devito. The purpose of our stay was a friends wedding off site, so we had dinners out with friends. We walked into Playa so the location of Allegro was ideal. We enjoyed many of the bars and restaurants and nightlife PDC has to offer. Our friends were staying at other resorts and condos in Playacar and we were happy to be near/with them in Playacar, we just wish the resort construction was further along and less disruptive to our stay. Bottom line - We think the staff (Gabriella, Fransisco, Jesus, Arturo, Umberto, Rox, Oswaldo, Jose and many, many more) went out of their way to try to make it right for their guests - kudos for their honesty and commitment to their guests enjoyment with a high level of customer service. We will be back to give Allegro a second chance as we feel it will be a great choice in the very near future.
