We stayed at the Allegro Playacar from June 14 to the 21st. There was 4 of us in 2 rooms, ( my husband and me in one room, my daughter and her friend in another) I had contacted the resort through Facebook and we had a social media appreciation, we got a fruit plate, VIP bands, and a mattress pad on our bed, gracias to Claudia and the resort! They also had a social media cocktail night that we were too busy to attend but were thankful for the invitation.
We had requested our rooms be close as possible and they gave us connecting rooms! The rooms are basic but with just changing the tile in the shower and on the floor would be a great improvement. Thanks to housekeeping we had a different towel art everyday as well as a very clean room
Also lots of people mention the air condition not being great and I agree but a little tip, Shut the bathroom door all the time! The little window in the bathroom just has a screen so it lets the cool air out. With the fan on the roof going it was enough to cool down.
The food was really good and never ran out of different things to try, for picky eaters there is always a pasta bar at the buffet, and fresh baked breads! so yummy. Mostly ate at buffet so we only went to the Italian restaurant and were pleasantly surprise with the tender steaks we had. At lunch there is a lunch buffet, burger shack and pizza/ panini shack where you can get a plate and eat at your lounger poolside.
The drinks were delicious and not the surgery sweet syrup we have found at many of the big, fancy resorts. Piña colada and lime daiquiri are my favorite and of course the cold beer with lime.
The beach is so beautiful, white sand with the torquoise water. Yes there is seaweed this year but the staff was always cleaning it up. Other resorts easily had twice as much from not picking up as often, such hard workers. Most of it was on the beach. But once in the water hardly any. It really didn't bother us at all.
The biggest plus is the staff. Gracias to you all, so friendly and hard working.
This resort is in a great location. In a gated community with multiple resorts, shops, and condos, houses, and of course Starbucks ( 5 min walk) for free wifi. It wad a 5 min cab ride to playa del carmen ( needed the air conditioning) haha. Prob a 15- 20 min walk. Also about 30 min cab ride to akumal beach to snorkel with turtles. Free, don't stop unless you want a guide. Also took a cab to Xel-ha and had a great day.
Gracias again Allegro Playacar, hope to see you again.
Also Please tip these hard workers, they so deserve it and appreciate it!??

Beautiful Grounds, lacking in most other areas

My husband and I just got back from our week long stay here. I had read many reviews and was prepared to potentially not have a/c, knew about the seaweed (nothing the hotel can do about that, the water is usually crystal clear) and that the beds would be hard. First, I would like to state that we bought a groupon, and I called the hotel a week before our stay to confirm and they did not have our reservation. I don't belive this to be the fault of the hotel, but make sure you call in advance and get a confirmation number from the hotel through groupon. (Several calls to groupon and we were able to get our booking confirmed despite the hotel being packed). On to the items that are in the control of the hotel: we've been to quite a few all inclusives and because we are usually looking for a deal we come prepared for at least a few things to be off. Usually when I hear I've been upgraded I know there's a catch, this time it was no AC in our room. The hotel would have moved us but room 5801 has one of the best locations in the resort, beachfront, breathtaking views from your first floor patio and the best beach lounge chairs/umbrellas just outside the door, over looking the beach (amazing breeze, peaceful, away from the pool but close enough to pop over for a dip or a beer). So no a/c and a room that all linens smell of mildew and the windows don't open, we decided the location was worth it and we would sweat it out (we are from New Orleans). We requested a fan and for all the linens and pillows to be swapped out, which they nicely did. What was funny is that clearly the room hasn't had AC for a while but yet they had a few people throughout the week come fiddle with the thermostat getting our hopes up, but I say clearly because everything smelled of mildew as if no one had stayed in the room for a while and the AC hadn't been working for a long time. So "upgrade" beware, it's usually whatever they have available when you check in. Our beachfront neighbors in the other hut didn't have AC either which seems crazy because those rooms could be sold at a higher rate. They too didn't want to give up their view and slept with their door open (2nd floor). Anyway, the views are amazing and the grounds are immaculate.... someone was always painting or putting up a new thatched umbrella. The inside of the rooms are pretty dated but our amazing housekeeper David was very thorough so although it smelled of mildew and the tiles and grout looked gnarly I knew it was clean. My biggest let down was that everyone on here wrote about the amazing service, we brought $200 in ones and fives hoping to tip lots and lots while being served things but alas, there is no pool service. There was also a line at the pool bar more times than not and you couldn't really order drinks from in the pool. A pro of this is that we never woke up with hangovers. We still tipped the bartenders and whoever we could find (omelette guy at the Buffett!!, David, Angel our evening lobby bartender, anyone who surprised us with service).... so when you could find service it was extremely good. Next biggest let down, the food! The breakfast buffet is okay (get an omelette made every day!), the lunch food is atrocious. At lunch you can get a hamburger from the hamburger bar that is edible depending on how long it has sat out, pizza place is sketchy, old, lukewarm pizza and the lunch buffet consisted of items you wouldn't want to eat at lunch or maybe ever. Maybe we were spoiled at the other "deal" all inclusivs we have been to but I thought drink service by the pool was a given and our other resorts had fresh, healthy, made to order lunch options (ceviche, fish tacos, sushi...) Don't eat at the Italian ala carte it was mostly inedible food with not fresh ingredients and many items appeared to have been frozen first. The dinner buffet was okay, you could always find something edible and heck we never had to wait to eat so there's that. We tried to go to the mexican ala carte to avoid the Chinese themed buffet but they claimed it was full (maybe people don't show up to their reservations but it was never full any night we walked by). Go into town and eat on Chinese Buffett night!
You're in a really cute gated community called playa car
You can rent bikes at the resort next door
We walked into town and then also cabbed one night, we had planned to bike but I threw my back out during beach volleyball
The beds really are very hard, you wake up with appendages asleep or in such pain that you have to rotate like a rotisserie chicken (a plus is that you'll always get up in time to reserve your beach chair and have a coffee in it) (yes you really do have to reserve beach chairs if the hotel is full and you like shade)
Ooh La La restaurant in town was delicious
If you need to see a sporting event go to EZ sports bar on 5th (on that same note don't go to the hotel sports bar, it stinks and is mostly empty-think mildew dungeon)
The shows at night are hysterical but I was impressed that they are a real show and that they are really trying to entertain you, kids seemed to love it
Some said this wasn't kids friendly-there were tons of kids and they were all having a blast in the pool and kids clubs
Say no to the free gift, avoid any contact with the guys in the hut outside the lobby in Pink and tell them all you already received your free gift and heard about the tour of the other resort. I smiled once and had to be nice and sit through the 5 min speech.....Now if you want to waste 4 hrs or so of your trip, have a tasty lunch at a different resort (that has monkeys in the trees) and listen to a sales pitch and quickly/firmly say no at the end, you will get a free stay on your next visit (does not include all inclusive fees), $100 towards an excursion and a bag of gifts (volleyball etc.)- per friends we made who went on it
#1: Maybe it's the season but the hotel was mostly Europeans (largest population being Italian), this didn't bother us, who doesn't love a speedo and skimpy swim suits but, I think the reason they may not have drink service is because the waiters couldn't make enough for it to be worth it (tipping is not common in Europe)
#2: My husband thinks the beds are so hard to entice customers to go to the spa (I went on day 2 and it was money well spent but I regretted not going later on in the week after a few nights in that bed. I've had a lot of massages and it was one of the best I've had)
Overall, Playa del Carmen was way better than Cancun, less touristy and more tropical, we loved our view, I wish I had played tennis, we loved the animals and grounds but I don't think I would go back, the food did it in for me. We will probably try another resort or maybe a condo in Playa Car, the next trip.

My husband and I went through a travel agency to reserve a room at the Allegro Playacar. The reservation was for a superior-premium room. We were assured by the travel agency that this was for a king-size, ocean-view room. No problem - right? So we get to this resort and was given a room, with two-double beds, no ocean view and no air conditioning....it just got worse from there. Ended up at the front of the resort, next to the theatre, on a mattress on a concrete-slab. Was told the next day that I would get moved to an up-graded room, which is what I had paid for. Was told that for today, I had arrived too late and all the rooms for my grade was gone. Next day, room with no air, so they moved us to the XCaret, five-star resort. Supposedly a wonderful upgrade. We ended up in a nice room, but with two double beds, no king available, a good 1/2 mile from the beach area. So my husband and I slept in separate beds and walked along way to get to the beach. The whole situation was so frustrating. The front desk manager just kept saying there was nothing he could do. There was nothing available for us, that were not a member of this Occidental Vacation Club. If we joined this club, we would get a better room, with a view and better service...need I say more. Be extremely careful booking with the Playa Del Carmen Allegro and the XCaret. These resorts are "club," resorts and if you are not a member, your service is crap, so please be very careful.
