We chose Allegro Playacar as it was much smaller than some of the other resorts we had been looking at...When we arrived at the hotel we were checked in very quickly and taken to our room..Our room was very nice although it could do with a lick of paint..The bed was huge..i got lost in it most nights...There was a tv with a couple of english channels on...we saw the news and if we had an early night we watched Discovery..There was also a hairdryer and coffee making machine..An earlier reviewer did complain that there was coffee but no sugar to go with it..If you open the bag which contains the coffee there was sugar, coffee mate and spoons inside...The small fridge in the room contained 1 large bottle of water 2 beers and 2 soft drinks...The water was replenished each day but we had to ask for the other drinks to be replenished as the maid kept forgetting..The maid came around every day and cleaned the rooms and gave you clean towels....A lot of people were complaining that the a/c wasnt working very well but we had to turn ours off at night as our room was like an ice box...We were a stones throw from the main pool and it was lovely to sit on the balcony and watch the world going by..
Breakfast and evening meals were served upstairs from the main lobby...We thought the food was excellent...There were various meats, cheese, eggs, bread, cereals all of which were good quality..You could ask the chef to make you a fried egg or omelette if you wished..Plenty of bacon and sausage available to those looking for a fry-up..
Evening meals were themed..Tex-Mex night...Italian night...International night etc..The amount of food available was fantastic and it was presented beautifully...Even if you are a very picky eater you will find something to eat..
Lunch was served at the pool area and had the addition of a pizza bar and a burger bar..If you wanted chips with your burger you had to be quick..They only ever brought 1 tray of chips at a time so if you missed out you had to wait for the next tray to arrive..(more chips needed)..
There were also 2 restaurants, Italian and Mexican which you could book each week of your stay..We went to the Italian twice and the food and service was excellent..We went to the Mexican on our last night and were extremely dissapointed..Food and service was awful...
The pools were both very nice although they could have been cleaned more thoroughly...We sat at the quiet pool most days...This was very relaxing and there were plenty of loungers and brollies to go around..The other pool was where all the entertainment took place...There were various games....volley ball...darts....quizes, aqua aerobics and plenty of music, all taking place in the pool..
The beach here was fantastic...yes there is some seaweed each morning but it is very soft and doesnt cause a problem...The sand was incredible and the water was nice and warm...some days we did have it a bit rough but that only added to the fun of jumping through the waves..Plenty of loungers to choose from...Jet skiing and para sailing available at a good price..
All of the hotel staff were lovely..They couldnt do enough to help you and were never far away if your glass needed a refill...Jacobo and Nesta were our favourites and were great guys....
The only negative we had was the time share team who stand outside the lobby area and try really hard to get you to go for a free breakfast to their sister hotel and then pester you to buy a time share..They dont call it time share but that is what it is..We agreed to go as we didnt realise what it was but when talking to some other guests they warned us not to go as it was time share..So we spoke to the time share guy and told him we had changed our minds...We then walked back to our room and had just opened the door when the phone rang...The time share man offering us free meals and more bottles of tequila to go along...We politely declined their offer...Anyway what stood out for us was one of the time share men William...He didnt speak to us for the duration of our holiday...William was annoyed that he wasnt getting commision...We found this very petty on his behalf but it did make us laugh....
All in all i would recommend this resort to anyone looking for a quiet relaxing hliday...The grounds were kept beautiful and the staff were amazing...
Definitely returning to Allegro!!

Had an amazing time at this resort. The staff were lovely and very helpful. The entertainment staff were so much fun and friendly, and all the waiters were very attentive especially Manuel and Alberto. The rooms provided everything we needed and we were steps away from the main pool.
My only complaint is that our air con did not work and we complained 3 times but the problem wasn't resolved. Luckily the fan was adequate enough. Another thing to avoid is the timeshare people who take you for a fancy breakfast and then try to sell you a membership to their vacation club. We did get a free bottle if tequila, bag and sarong from it though.
Will definitely return to this hotel in the near future. Great location, diverse food selections, fun entertainment, amazing cocktails and wonderful staff!

We have vacationed in Mexico nearly thirty times. So, we are familiar with many hotels, beaches, and regions in Mexico. This was our 3rd time to the Playa del Carmen region. We were thrilled with the beach! They have done a fabulous job restoring the beach after the hurricane years ago wiped out much of the beach along this coast. The ocean was clear and blue. The Allegro is in a terrific location with only a 20 minute walk to Playa del Carmen and across the street from a small shopping area. The Starbucks across the street is popular with tourists, especially those requiring WiFi connection!
The hotel is small, well cared for, and the staff are very friendly. They have a great entertainment staff. Food is okay - we have seen better but have also seen worse. Their lunch at the pool was better than their buffet and their hamburger/fry shack was very good. We dined in The Italian a la carte one night. The food was great in The Italian but the waiters need to be more attentive. If you are looking for a change in dining options, there are many great restaurants in Playa del Carmen.
There are not enough palapas on the beach for those seeking shade - perhaps the hotel will construct more in time for high season. The beach loungers were in good condition. Each room has a balcony and hammock to enjoy. The closets need more hangars and the rooms could benefit with drawers so guests don't have to live out of their suitcase. There was no beach service but that could be due to low season and less staff.
Excellent maid service - beautiful towel art. Excellent mini-bar service as well.
Some tips to those who plan to stay here - safety deposit box fee is $2 a day, there is no free WiFi at the hotel, windows in most of the rooms do not open, and air conditioning is not really effective. Beware the timeshare staff near the lobby, but if you say no and enjoy your day, they are respectful and leave you alone. There are few vendors on the beach, not like in Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, etc.
We would stay here again if price was right as the hotel's beach and proximity to Playa del Carmen are terrific!.
Beautiful part of the beach

Beautiful hotel but badly needs the repairs/upgrade it is scheduled for. The hotel is beautiful but has alot of ants in the rooms, leaky taps and the doors are a nightmare, had to get keys changed everyday. I loved the openess of it as it is like little hut houses instead of a tall multi floor hotel. Ours was right at the beach end which was lovely. The pool hangs out onto the beach and the view is amazing. Went a walk about the beach and I'd say this part is the nicest. Most of the staff where friendly, didn't really have many issues with them. The maids done a good job but not many people understood me so was hard to try get stuff sorted. The food wasn't great I heard other hotels say it was amazing in theirs but not in here and many other people had the same issue if u want italian or mexican u gotta book a reservation and we tried everyday and in 2weeks only got to go to each once so if u don't like anything at the buffet then ur outta luck. No milk or sugar in rooms but there is coffee and a coffee maker. The entertainment was good during the day but they have nothing for when it's a wet day as everything is outside. All in all was okay as a one off but couldn't stay here again.

Small hotel, low season, not crowded. .. BUT do no expect complimentary early check in or late check out. Cealing Fan stopped working the second day, TV did not work, iron did not work, no sugar for the coffee in room. Bathroom floods when you turn on the shower. Unable to squeeze shower gel and shampoo from container. Dark room.
After check in they send with the "concierge" to give you all info about the hotel... Sure, 2 minutes info and 15 you trying to finally go to your room saying no to their invitation to visit their sister hotel.
Breakfast was ok, but lunch and dinner were not. Menu was VERY limited and bad/cold. Beach was ok the second day... Then it got a LOT of seeweed, so much that it became impossible to enjoy the beach..don't know if the hotel is not allow to clean it. No wifi... If you pay you can only use it around the pool or lobby, not in your room. You can get free wifi outside of starbucks 2-3 minutes walk.
Matress had a plastic cover.. Take it off if you don't want to sweat all night.
