My wife and I stayed at the Allegro Playacar Beach Resort Aug 22nd-29th.This resort is on the smaller side which we like. We were in room 4204 which was close to the beach and pool. Our room had a king bed and cold air. The water pressure in the shower wasn't very good but worked. They clean the room daily and restock the mini fridge daily with water, beer and Pepsi. The grounds are beautiful and well maintained. Lunch buffet is down by the pool. There's also a burger grill and pizzeria at the pool. Breakfast and Dinner buffet is upstairs above the lobby. They have a different theme nightly. Our favorites were Oriental and Tex-Mex. There are two restaurants, Mexican and Italian. The Mexican was great, try the beef filet it's amazing. Did not try the Italian. There are two pools which are separated by the lunch buffet. The one out in front is for water volleyball and all the water activities. The one behind the buffet is more for relaxing. The beach... Great and a lot of it. Water was calm every day we were there, soft sand and no rocks, at least none that we stepped on. In front of the resort a 5 min walk to the left will get you to Playacar Plaza where there is a Starbucks that has free Wi-Fi . A 45 min walk to the right will take you to 5th ave. Overall we had a great relaxing vacation at the Allegro Playacar. I would definitely go back to this resort.

It was the best. The staff, locations and the best was the beautiful view in front of the beach. Food buffet style variety of Mexican, American and see food also. The room was very clean daily with all the toiletries. Hotel events every night inviting guests to enjoy it like a family. Everybody was friendly giving us attention. If you book all included will be better with free access to food and beverages any time.

We visited this resort the last week of August 2015 for 5 nights. We were not impressed with most of the facilities. The lobby wasn't welcoming, it was hot and had no air conditioning. No one knew what they were doing. We never received anything that we were promised with the Honeymoon/Anniversary Adoring Package, we complained twice but gave up. We were to get a Special Welcome Letter, Fresh fruit platter and bottle of sparking wine upon arrival, Special turn-down service, Continental Breakfast, and 10% discount on spa treatment. The rooms were dirty and need renovations. The rooms had mildew and smelt like sewer. The food needs some changes in the Buffet. We liked the Mexican Dinner that you had to make reservations for. The mini bar was to be restocked every other day and of course it was not.

We just got home last night 8/29/15 - BEST WEEK EVER - Excellent Vacation!!!!! The Staff were 5 Star***** Very conscientious, pleasant accommodating. The Ocean front was one of the Best, No Rocks, like a big swimming pool, awesome. We had no trouble finding a spot on the Beach (week of 8/22-8/29) Our Room #5401 was close to pool, bar, beach with a view from window of pool/beach! "Of course nothing was far away in this small, intimate Resort" Housekeeping very good! Always keeping floor cleaned at lunch buffet as beach/pool crowd constantly creating a need to squeegee the floor. Did a great job! Food: Great Variety and all Good! Hamburger Bar for Lunch was awesome! We tried the Mexican Restaurant one night/EXCELLENT .... Had the steak, very, very good, appetizer, soup & dessert was also great. We had the romantic beach dinner and that was GREAT also... food, service and of course the sunset! AWESOME.
***Small, Intimate Resort***** Loved it. This was a trip to RELAX! for us and We Did, Totally pampered us! GREAT PEOPLE...
There were lots of families there also, kids seemed to have a good time? Animation Team did a good job (even though we didn't participate we could observe!)

After flight delays, which resulted in a 36 hour transit time, we were relived to finally arrive at Allegro Playacar. This relief was short-lived. Due to the aforementioned delays, we had missed a night's stay in the hotel. Keen to check into our (prepaid) room, we bounced up to the reception, excited to begin our holiday (and get a shower!). HOWEVER, because we were a 'no-show' our room had been allocated to another party, meaning we had to wait yet another 6 hours before we could check-in. We expressed our dissatisfaction to the reception staff, who were apathetic, at best, towards our misfortunes. We tried to remain positive, and changed our clothes in the guest toilets in the lobby area. We thought we would explore the hotel grounds and relax until our room was ready, only to be stopped in our tracks by a salesperson, disguised as support staff, employed by the hotel. We understand it is common for hotels to offer upgrades to its guests, but to be told that if we didn't upgrade we would receive poor customer service by the hotel (e.g. he told us a guest who had recently stayed at the hotel had faulty air-con in their room and it was not fixed because they were not in the 'vacation club') is not something a paying guest wants to hear upon arrival to this establishment.
The rooms are clean, but very outdated. The safe is easy to use and free (no deposit required), and was fixed very promptly when the battery ran out. Nice patio, with views of the well-kept grounds. Just an FYI, we booked a superior room - however, it is not superior to anything, as this is the most basic room type apparently.
The pool area did not have any supervision - quite alarming when there are children playing in the life ring, and its basically a free-for-all. There are lots of parasols available (if you get up at 5am - the staff actually encourage you to reserve them!!). There were more that a few casualties of cut feet from the broken tiles in the pool - however, first aid were always on hand. The lively pool was fun with entertainment, and there was lots to do e.g. water aerobics and volleyball. The pool bar staff were extremely friendly, and always happy to help and there was a wide variety of drinks to choose from. There are good facilities such as basketball, tennis and ping pong. The beach was nice - although unfortunately it was inundated with seaweed when we stayed, although we understand that this cannot be helped. The bars were nice, service was excellent, but the sports bar rarely had anyone in it (probably because it was like stepping into the arctic during a solar eclipse) and the evening entertainment was good (although it wasn't a very sociable set-up, as the chairs were in lines like a cinema, and you don't mess with the lines!). We loved the Mexican band and salsa dancing, the staff were enthusiastic and had everyone involved.
The a la carte restaurants were lovely and the food was delicious, we had steak and crepes for dessert which were exquisite. We booked our reservations through Claudia, who was helpful throughout our stay and was always more than happy to help. One night we were booked for the Mexican restaurant and the reception staff had accidentally booked us for 1 person instead of 2, and when we got to the restaurant we were made to wait for over an hour to be sat despite their own mistake and the restaurant being half empty. The restaurant staff at the buffet were exceptional, with impeccable customer service, attentiveness and manners. The buffet food was, however, questionable. There was always a wide variety of fruit, which was great, and the bread was fresh and delicious. But most of the food was inedible. The breakfast contained leftovers from the night before. The oriental night was nice with fresh sushi and plenty of tasty options, but we're struggling to think of any other nice meals.
There are a few positives about the hotel, like the internet was free on the lobby computer, and the staff in the buffet being fabulous, and rooms being clean. Also, the hotel grounds are nice and presented beautifully. The entertainment staff were really enthusiastic and clearly made guest's stay fun and memorable. Playa del Carmen itself is amazing; we made trips to the shopping centres, beach and restaurants almost ever day of our two week stay. The trips that are available are also outstanding, we visited many beautiful cenotes, Mayan villages and ruins.
There was one incident that we will remember the most from our stay, which is almost as amusing as it was infuriating. So we were checking out at 2.30am, because when we had enquired with reception the previous day, they had informed us that it was best to check out then. So we approach reception with our suitcases, and our transfer bus waiting outside promptly. There was a gentleman on reception who told us we had a $50 USD bill for laundry. We immediately presumed that it was wrongly placed in our file, as we had not ordered any laundry service. Then he showed us a piece of paper which stated that we had received a bill for this amount because there had been 'vomit' on our sheets, which the cleaner had to carry out a 'special laundry service' for. Now, despite the dodgy food and uncooked eggs that we had ingested, we had, by some miracle, not been poorly at all throughout our stay. So this laundry bill was a complete shock to us, and was definitely unjustified. At first we could not think of anything that could have been misconstrued by the hotel as 'vomit'. Then we remembered that about half way through our stay, we took a burrito back to our room and a bag of guacamole that came with it had accidentally burst and leaked onto one of the duvet sheets. We swiftly removed the sheet and placed it on the floor so that it could be easily accessible to but he cleaner. The cleaning service for our room was always excellent. Bearing in mind the guacamole spillage occurred half way through our stay, we were never contacted by he hotel to inform us that they had presumed the mess to be 'vomit', as they could have posted a note through our door or approached us with their concerns at the time. If we had have vomited on our sheets, we would have been more than happy to pay the costs for cleaning, as would anyone I'm sure. So the man at reception told us that we couldn't leave until we had paid this surprise false bill, and so we paid it there and then (despite the piece of paper not being signed by the hotel management or ourselves, only the 'cashier'). We pointed out to him that the hotel had managed to post a note through our room door regarding clarification of our payment method, but had somehow forgotten to inform us of this accusation. And then the cherry on the cake was when he said we should have checked out the day before, even though the day reception staff had told us to do it as we were leaving. Really awful, uncommunicative customer service from the reception staff, and totally unfair, as they basically stole $50 USD off us.
The negatives vastly outweigh the positives, therefore not only will we not be returning, we are hoping to repress at least half of the memories of our stay.
