We Loved Viva Wyndham Azteca
We had a great time. Everything was wonderful. We loved the size of the resort. We like smaller, quieter ones. The food was delicious with endless options at every mealtime. The entire resort was very clean and well maintained. All the workers are very friendly and hard-working. We would definitely go back and recommend the resort to other people!
We had a wonderful trip. The resort is small, not crowded at all. Always found lounge chairs on the beach. The beach was beautiful and clean. Buffet was good and always clean. Two things we were not completely satisfied with were the amount of people walking through the beach on the resort trying to sell things. It was a constant stream of them. The dinner reservations, we were only only allowed to make reservations for 2 of our 4 nights. Not a very good service. When we did go in the restaurants were empty, so not sure why they wouldn't take more reservations. Unless to keep their costs down. The food and service at the restaurants were excellent.
Viva Wyndham Azteca
The only 2 "complaints" I have are VERY minor - - - (1) it was a bit challenging to regulate the room temperature. While it was a comfortable temperature, the humidity tended to be a bit higher than we'd have liked. That may have been due to the first floor room, however. (2) It would have been nice to have more seats around the pool, as by the time the pool opened at 8am, they would be already full. Otherwise, the trip was absolutely AMAZING. :)
Viva Wyndham Azteca 4/2017
Very comfortable beds, but sham pillows outnumber real pillows; as for more. Buffet restaurant good - but for Mexico where the ancients drank chocolate - there is almost no chocolate on the dessert bar :-( . Hotel is kept very clean and gardens are continually maintained. Lovely breeze on the beach and there are lots of chaises under palm trees for shade. People do reserve the chaises around the pool, but even if there were twice as many chairs, I suspect the situation would be the same. Unfortunately, for those who need to monitor their children in the pool, there are not too many options. I was actually thinking that it would be useful to have ones own transportable folding chair, perhaps there is somewhere to buy one in the area. There is a gift shop to purchase souvenirs, goggles, sunscreen, etc. The rooms are air conditioned, and the public spaces have a nice breeze and didn't need it (we went in April). Do not get a room by the bar unless you stay up late, due to the loud music. Kayaking on the ocean was fun, and one of the guys will take you out on one of the catamarans (both free). We did not go to any of the specialty restaurants, so I have no tips/opinion to provide.
Viva Wyndham Azteca
This is an older facility with simple room furnishings however service is excellent!
two hotels for the price of one
Stayed at the Aztecia but was able to use the facilities at Maya. Beach was beautiful at both resorts.
Best Beach Vacation
The Viva Wyndham Azteca in Playa del Carmen is the best all-inclusive we have stayed in on the Riviera Maya Mexico. The size of the hotel allows the staff to get to know you and your wishes immediately. The staff was amazing. We were amazed at the beach and never had a problem finding an unoccupied lounge chair to our liking. The specialty restaurants were by reservation only, and although our stay length only allowed us two reservations immediately, we were able to visit the reservation desk each afternoon and get an available spot at one of the restaurants for that evening. Being able to eat at both the Azteca and the Maya gave us six different restaurants to chose from. It would be difficult to decide which of the four was our favorite because we enjoyed great meals and service at all of them. We will definitely return to this wonderful hotel.
Average Hotel not quite a resort.
Not much to do, no air conditioned space other than you room. The proximity to town was a plus. I've stayed at more than 12 resorts in Playa del Carmen and this one was second from the worst.
Not the best experience
We have certainly stayed at much nicer resorts in Mexico. This resort met minimum requirements. Very family orientated, with absolutely nothing to entertain adults. Food was acceptable, but nothing to brag about. Bartenders were excellent. Beach was gorgeous. Don't spend money on wifi service, don't expect soap or bottled water.
My resort was excellent. It was my first all-inclusive and I was very pleased. Everything was great. I started getting sick of the food towards the end but, I feel like that is a common thing with resorts. Overall though, five stars.
Apple Rep in Playacar
Rep was great at arranging things in the schedule to accommodate us.

Holidays for two
We stayed at Hotel 21 to 28/07/2017. Everything I have seen in the reviews before going to Viva Wyndham Azteca were true. This is a lovely place! he food was good, enjoyed both the beach bar and the main buffet. As with all buffets, the food got a bit repetitive, and the quality varied, but overall we were very satisfied. We went to the Italian a la carte and the Japanese, both were very good! The weather was beautiful and we used the beach every day. Rooms were very clean and simple.I recommend going out for two
Good vacation, travel dates April 23- 30 2018
This resort is a small resort and great for a getaway if you want to relax and have some good down time. The upside is you also have the option of using the amenities at the sister resort which is much larger and a 10 minute walk down the road or a 5 minute walk down the beach.
The check in process was easy and fast. Staff was friendly and you are given a welcome drink. There was no line up when we arrived, which was late afternoon. You are required to pay an environmental fee and if you want to use your safe there is a fee for this as well. They are paid for on checkout.
Also located in the front lobby is guest services. Here, you can easily make reservations for the a-la-carte restaurants. We also needed to change our reservations a few times due to excursions and this was easily accommodated.
Our room was very basic, nothing fancy. But it was also very clean, and the housekeeping staff did a great job at maintaining that level of cleanliness everyday. This is something I am picky about and didn't have an issue with it at this resort. The balconies were quite small, but looking around there seemed to be some that were larger. There were chairs on it, but you really couldn't sit out there as the chairs barely fit. The big downside to the room was that there is a connecting door between our room and the next room and you could hear everything from that room. There were two teen aged boys staying there while we were, so you can imagine the noise at times.
The pool area was very clean and well maintained. There is only one pool, however, it never felt crowded. There was even some shade along the back wall in the afternoon.
It wasn't easy to find a chair next to the pool, but the chairs on the back end of the beach were not that far away so that worked nicely and there was always a spot there.
The beach was beautiful! This is an excellent, wide, sandy strip of beach. There was a bit of seaweed there for our first few days but wasn't an issue after that. The water was great and even though we didn't use any, there were water activities offered. It was never an issue to find a seat on the beach, which are all pretty much shaded by the trees.
The bar/snack bar in the pool area was a great place! Always something to eat ready for you and the bartenders were excellent and happy. In the evening, if you wanted a more quiet spot to sit, this was it. The only problem was the non-smoking areas were not enforced. The wifi was best here as well, as it was not available in your room unless you pay a fee.
The a-la-cartes were great! Really enjoyed the food and atmosphere in each one! Be sure to check out the Mayan one, best by far and wonderful surroundings.
The buffet was good, a different theme everyday. No complaints, food was tasty, many options and staff was good. Large inside and also an outside area to sit as well. Staff did their best to get things cleaned up after one group left to allow another a seat outside.
The town of Playa del Carmen is only a 20 minute walk away from this resort or a 5 minute bike ride. You can sign bikes out from the resort, they aren't fancy but they do the trick. When you get to town, you are right in the area of 5th avenue.
A little shout out to Javier in the dive shop at the resort for helping us out with making plans for diving/snorkeling. Great guy!
Overall, good place to stay and relax. More amenites at the sister resort to take advantage of (trapeze, archery, a-la-cartes etc.) which gives you the best of both worlds.
We spent April 16 to April 21,2018 at the Azetec with 3 couples and 2 teenager girls. The resort is small and rooms abit out dated .Not to many English speaking guests but not a concern. definitely much quieter than sister hotel Maya
The girls preferred Maya which had
More happenings and more English speaking peers however daughters Gopro was stolen from under towel on pool chair after going in water for 5 minutes. Someone was obviously watching and knew what they were doing since she was 10 feet from chair. Food was good not great. Only allowed 1 speciality restaurant for every 3 day stay but can check at 230 to see if any availability. We ate at Chinese, Italian and international. All were good.
Jet ski and parasailing available on beach. Would definitely go back ...maybe next year :)
An honest review travel date April 5-12 2018
Very disappointed in this resort. Pro of course would be in Mexico were the weather is beautiful. The cons of this resort were many.
Lobby : very small. Really no place to sit and relax, although service with check in was good as check out.
Court yard: small area with very uncomfortable cast iron chairs and limited sitting.
24hr snack bar and pool area: same thing limited sitting and pool very small. No swim up bar. Staff even put out cards on table for silence.
Beach: nice beach. Lawn chairs are all placed in rows
No huts on beach.
You may have your own private sitting area on beach if you want to upgrade. Personally I save your money .
Drinks just fair. Service ok
Shows on resort fair. Staff are great socialize with customers to participate in activities.
There is no music or live music to entertain people on resort only what the entertainment staff provide, lobby bar shuts down at midnight you do have the opition to go to snack bar .they use a hallway to create a dance area in lobby bar.
Small area. Small selection of food. Food at best is fair.
La carte oriental and bamboo was good as service.
Our room was dated and we did not get our room as requested. Spoke to front desk as well as sunwing rep. All that was said it is only a request. Maids did an excellent job .
Bank machine on resort issue:
Used machine on my last night to buy something out of gift shop. Money was refused by girl working there slight tear. Staff rude and unfriendly even after I told her I just got the money out of machine did not speak to rep as it was my last night.
If you are looking for a small resort this resort maybe for you.would I recommend absolutely not I am not hard to please was very disappointed in this trip been to Mexico twice, this resort doesn't compare to my past experiences. I paid top dollar for this resort over 1500.00 and I feel my hard earned was wasted on this resort. I am not trying to be harsh but the resort isn't worth visiting.
Very disappointing resort
This was our first trip to Mexico. We had looked at the reviews prior to booking so thought it would be a great place to visit. Upon arrival the check in was fast and received a welcome drink. The room was a bit of a shock...very dated. Most of the rooms had a divider door into the next room. Needless to say you can hear everything from the other room even seeing when the light is on in the other room at night from around the doorframe. The rmaid service was excellent...room cleaned really well each day clean towels and very creative towel creatures left on the bed and in the bathroom; however, the mini fridge was never restocked. You are provided one bottle of water in the mini fridge along with four pop but if you want more water you need to buy it or sneak it from the outside bar. There was only one pool but not enough loungers. You are not permitted to bring chairs from the bar area near the pool nor drink your beverages near the edge of the pool. There is no swim up bar. The beach was beautiful, plenty of loungers; however the loungers are separated for privilege guests and regular guests. You will be told if you sit in the wrong ones. You are provided cards to get clean beach towels each day. As for the food, despite what other reviews have stated..the pizza is not very good...actually disgusting to say the least. The French fries are a must as well as their homemade salsa. As for the buffet..it was so so. If you want bacon for breakfast you will need to ask the cook who cooks the eggs as it is kept behind near the grill. Definitely a well kept secret. The food is fine but nothing to brag about. The staff went about their jobs but not overly friendly. As for the a la carte, you are entitled to three during your stay. The Italian restaurant was fantastic..food was outstanding and staff amazing. There was also an oriental restaurant and a Mayan restaurant but we did not try either of them. You are allowed to visit their sister resort the viva Wyndham Mayan just a short walk down the road. The buffet food is pretty much the same as for the a la carte we did not try them but you are permitted to book at them as part of your three a la carte reservations. As for entertainment that was extremely disappointing. Starts at 930 each evening but involves a lot of lip sync acts. Once the acts have finished for the night they proceed to the bar area which transforms into the disco. Although this is an all inclusive resort, the safe is not included. That is an additional fee payable upon checkout along with environmental fees. For the week it cost us $22usd or you can pay in pesos. Definitely not a four star resort more like a three star. Will definitely never book there again.
