We were at the Silversands from march 27th to april 7th. We really like Secrets resorts, this is why we became members of the U.V.C. We travel 4 to 6 weeks a year, for the last 10 years or so, and we have been in all kind or places from 2 stars to the top. Our eleven days experience at the Silversands was almost perfect. This resort is amazing. Beautiful and modern; the staff is second to none. The animation, restaurants, and bars are exquisite, everybody wants to help you, please you, make you happy. Wonderfull.... But nothing is perfect. We don't understand the management politics on a few things: the hotel obviously wants to be environmentally friendly, using washable glasses, recycling bins everywhere; but wait, you can take and use as many beach towels as you want!!! Easy, the towel shack is open to all! We've seen people setting-up with as many as 5 towels each, at the pool and at the beach, sometimes both. The pools open a 0800 in the morning, and just like at cheaper resorts, it was a free for all for guest who reserve chairs at 0500 before sunrise; we found that many places we already taken but still no show before late in the morning sometimes noon! Even the floaters were reserved and used on chairs as mattresses. We never saw that at any other Secrets we went to. One thing you expect in the Caribbean and the West Indies is tropical music. Unfortunately, not at Silversands. Very disappointing. As well, it would be SO easy to get thematic in the restaurants with dinner music, Italian, French, Mexican, Asian .... nope: boom-sheka-boom! Where it was really unexpected, was on day 9. A large group of loud young adults (maybe a hundred) arrived and took the place like in a spring break happening, gone the smooth relaxing ambiance. We were not the only unhappy, hopefully the others will speak up. Some staff and management told that this never happens; well it did. That group would have been a perfect crowd for a Breathless resort, not a Secrets. We left with a bittersweet taste.

My wife and I visited here in March 2017. We had booked a preferred swim up room but you get offered a discounted upgrade at check in so opted for one of the cabanas. This room suited us perfectly as we enjoy our own company and love to just relax in the sun with a drink. We could not ask for more as there is 24hr room service and a constant refill of the mini bar plus the best waitresses you could ever imagine. 2 in particular were Mercedes and Karen (not spelt correctly). They seemed to time us finishing our drinks to perfection and were there with a new drink just when needed. The hotel is very clean and well maintained. We had a couple of issues with the room and 1 call each time resolved these in minutes. Well done maintenance team. The preferred club lounge is very good and the staff there in particular Omar are very helpful and informative and nothing was ever a problem. For me the only slight negative is the food. The breakfast is a bit monotonous and the buffet lunch is a bit boring but there is always something to eat and I never went hungry. The speciality restaurants that we tried were very good and the Mexican experience was quite special although we only made it out on 3 evenings. (Partly due to the superb waitress service. Overall a very clean and well maintained hotel with excellent staff and although not the best I've been too we have an overwhelming desire to return as quickly as possible and I would most definitely recommend.

One of the best resorts in Mexico!

We have been to Mexico numerous times, and this is our favorite resort so far. We went with three other couples and had a great time. Excellent service, food and accommodations. We really enjoyed the atmosphere. It wasn't too over the top just the right mix of relaxation and party. There is a little night club for those who like to hang out, but it closes kind of early. The beach is rocky and it's not the greatest. The beach is the only reason why we didn't rate it 5 stars.

The excellent, the not so good, and the bad

My wife and I booked last minute for this resort and stayed 10 nights April 10-20. Having stayed at a number of adults only all inclusive resorts, both in Mexico and elsewhere in the Caribbean in the past (including two Sandals resorts) we had heard good things about the Secrets chain, and were interested to see how it compared. Upon arrival we were greeted with champagne and checked in relatively quickly. We were "offered", and declined, an upgrade to a partial ocean view with 2 massages for only an additional $450 US (a $1700 value according to them). Apparently everyone is offered an upgrade. We opted for the booked room on the fourth floor of the 6000 block of rooms in a quieter part of the resort. The Excellent: The service is exemplary. All service staff we encountered (with exception of one) were pleasant, friendly and eager to please. Waiters in the restaurants and bars are quick, efficient, attentive and accurate in their taking of orders. Tables are cleared quickly, once a course is finished. Replenishments for water, wine and coffee are often offered ,before you have to ask. Bartenders are quick with any drink request, and don’t skimp on the alcohol. Unlike other AI’s that only offer domestic beer and liquor, they have pretty much anything you could request, even premium brands. I stumped them when I asked for cognac. I was offered brandy instead. The poolside waiters are incredible (especially Amanda) and often anticipate your requirements by bringing you another drink before you have to ask. The rooms are thoroughly tidied and cleaned by housekeeping staff. The staff work hard to make the guests’ stay enjoyable and they always say hola with a smile. The food for the most part, is very good, fresh and plentiful. The breakfast and lunch buffets offered a large variety of tasty items. The restaurants (French, Italian, Asian, Mexican, Mediterranean, Steak & Seafood) offered interesting menus and provided a variety of dining options, without the need to make reservations. The sole exception was the teppanyaki tables at the Asian restaurant, which did require a reservation. There is some overlap and repurposing of food items between restaurants, however. The garlic soup (way too salty) in one restaurant was also the sauce on the fettuccine alfredo. The chicken cordon bleu in the French restaurant was remarkably similar to the chicken parmigiana in the Italian restaurant, and also the stuffed chicken breast on the room service menu. You get the idea. The live entertainment was both great, and terrible. Our favourite performance was the “Rock Show” which was a fantastic hard rock band called Quarzo doing a Las Vegas style review complete with go go dancers and featuring songs of AC/DC, Journey, GNR, & Pat Benetar among others. The cirque de soleil style shows, the “Urban” show and three (Mexican) tenors were equally professional and entertaining. Not so good was the Argentinian Gaucho and, especially bad, was the Canadian comic Mike Wood from Toronto whose whole schtick was to land a cabbage from a catapult on a spike on his head. Three tries and he still couldn’t do it. Made me embarrassed to be Canadian. Rooms: The rooms are very spacious. Having done a lot of cruising, this room was gigantic by comparison to a standard cruise ship cabin. King size bed, whirlpool, large bathroom (double sink) and shower. Marble everywhere. At one time, maybe 20 years ago, this resort was new and modern. It is now showing its age, as the furniture and interior appointments appear worn and tired. There were stains on the bathroom floor, the closet doors were scratched and marked. The coffee table had obvious water damage and had been repaired and repainted. Small things, but noticeable. The balcony was huge and overlooked the narrow U shaped canal pool in front of this building. We could just see the ocean over top of the roof and a/c equipment of the Spa. Not the greatest view. The balcony had a large daybed and three plastic rattan "cubes" (for lack of a better description). None of these furnishings were particularly comfortable for sitting on the balcony, so we did not spend much time there. How about some chairs, Secrets? The resort grounds, while quite nice and well kept, are not as lush with gardens and tropical plants as some resorts we’ve stayed at. Even though the resort was apparently at 90% capacity, it didn’t seem crowded. There are a variety of pools to choose from, ranging from the main pool with swim up bar and party atmosphere, to quieter and smaller pools in secluded parts of the resort. There are plenty of lounge chairs available. We preferred the pool closest to the beach that had a pergola for shade that overlooked the ocean. The not so good: The beach was a big disappointment because of the sargassum seaweed that piles up constantly. The resort tries to gather it up with a tractor and machinery, but it is a never ending battle. Swimming is difficult because of the seaweed, and shallow rocky bottom. Snorkelling off the beach is pointless because you have to go so far out before the water is of any depth, and there is little marine life to see once you get there. If you are looking for long walks on the beach, this resort is not for you. It is next to impossible to go south, as the shoreline is very rocky and you must cross private property to get to the next stretch of beach. You can go north about 2 km, to the Breathless resort where there is a wall and breakwater. If you are very daring you can wade over to the next stretch of beach, but be forewarned: you will be on a “naturist” (nude) beach at the “Desires” resort. From there you can probably walk all the way to Puerto Morales. The bad: Air Conditioning System (WARNING!!!). The noise from the air conditioning system was horrendous. Sleeping with it on was like sleeping in a wind tunnel in the engine room of a steamship. With it off, the room warmed up quickly and we woke up in a sweat in the middle of the night. There are only two settings, on or off, with the fan on high and the temperature is locked at 20 C. The system doesn’t cycle on & off, and there is no thermostatic control. For some inexplicable reason, the ceiling fan would only operate when the a/c was turned on. We complained after the first night, and were told that someone would come to fix it, or they could move us to another room. We didn’t want to move as we had already unpacked. The next night wasn’t any quieter, and there was no follow up from guest services. We complained again and a maintenance man came and told us the fan needed to be replaced, but couldn’t be done until the next day. The next day the noise was different. Not any quieter. Just different. Again, no followup from guest services. Enquiries with other guests indicated that the a/c systems in other rooms had similar problems: either too cold, not cold enough, or too noisy. Rather than complain again, and move to another room with the same or different a/c problem, we opted for ear plugs. TIP TO OTHER TRAVELLERS: check out the a/c BEFORE you unpack! Other than the beach and the a/c issues, we had an enjoyable time at Secrets Silversands. As other comparable all-inclusive’s go, it is a very good value for the money. Would we return to this one? Probably not, but we would certainly try other Secrets resorts.

Excellent as Usual

My husband and I love this resort. This is our 3rd time to Silversands since the year it first opened. The things we love: Staff - our waiter at breakfast and lunch daily, Miguel, already had our drinks ready for us in the mornings, including a pot of tea for my mom. Being her first trip out of the country, this sure made her feel special. Property - they are always doing things to make this better. Someone is always cleaning, trimming, painting, in the pool scrubbing, etc. Restaurants - this resort has the best overall food at any of the Secrets, in our opinion. We also love the location - they are all in a row and easy to get to. The Bordeaux had delicious soup and steak, along with creme brulee. We ate at the Himitsu three times, once at the grill with reservations, the other at a regular table. Do not worry about reserving the grill, you can get the same food at a non-reserved table. The Silversands sushi and the Crispy sushi was our favorite. We also love the Cocoa cafe. I would stop and get a white choc mocha for breakfast each morning and take it to the buffet with me. They have these amazing fruit tarts in the evening that go very quickly, but my husband loves them. The Italian restaurant was very good, but avoid the Ratatouille. The only good item there was the lamb chop. Rooms - the rooms are very comfortable and they were cleaned well daily. Our turn down service was amazing and everything cleaned (dirty towels removed and new ones stocked) by the time we came back in the evening. Layout - there are so many places to congregate or just hang out. They've really strategically posted areas where people may gather and socialize. One of our favorite places is the deck overlooking the ocean and the seats are so comfortable. Pools - the pools are numerous, clean and refreshing. There are plenty of pagodas for cover. Spa - we were given a free day at the hydrotherapy at the spa. This was an excellent move on the part of the resort because we absolutely loved it. We will pay to do this next time! Things not so great: Beach - this is known and not their fault. It's just not a great beach. Water sports - the options you have are either a catamaran or a kayak. That's it. We asked the staff if they would take us out on a catamaran one day (we always tip generously) and they told us it would cost us $30 plus tip. I don't think they are supposed to charge you for this at all. It was disappointing. Bathrooms - not the cleanliness, but the availability. If you camp out for the day at one particular spot, you really have to walk a ways to find one. Benches - the layout benches need updated. A few have removable padding but you have to find them and move them to your bench. They should all be updated to include this. Rafts - there were several in the mornings near the towels but once gone around 7:00 AM, they would be saved by that person all day long, whether used or not. My recommendation would be to have a nice designated area at each pool with a certain amount of rafts. There could be a sign attached stating when not in use, please return to the bin for other to use. Some other suggestions for travelers: Most restaurants require long pants for men and closed toe shoes, along with a collared shirt. My husband brings one pair of light khakis for the week, golf shirts, and crocs. These will suffice. The wind is pretty fierce, which tends to keep the bugs away, but I always bring insect repellent. We use USA Transfers for our travel to and from the airport. It was $69 round trip for 4 of us in a private vehicle. This is the way to go! We start a probiotic 1 week before, continue during our stay and for 1 week after leaving Mexico. This has helped tremendously with any adverse effects from the water. I use the tap water to brush my teeth now that I do this and have had no issue at all.
