2018 Mother Daughter Trip
JULIE B.
Apr 17 2018
Each spring we typically work with Apple Vacations to travel somewhere warm. This year was no different. This year it was a mother/daughter trip with another mother/daughter who are friends of ours. We had a great time. We had the opportunity to stay at this resort about 6 years ago, so it was fun to go back. The hotel is beautiful but the rooms are starting to see some wear and tear. Would like to see this resolved. Also, the beach area has really washed away. hoping they can do something with this as well. We typically stay at the Secrets chain for the cleanliness and food. This hotel didn't disappoint. Love how easy it is to travel with Apple. Given the news lately with traveling to Mexico, it gave us some peace to know we were traveling with Apple. The trip was great. Thanks!

Worst Secrets resort by far, service at a 2 star level
JONATHAN S.
Apr 06 2018
This is the first time I've been disappointed with a Secrets resort. The staff at the concierge especially was terrible and rude, the French and Italian restaurant service was awful (Mexican and Mediterranean were good), and the general attitude of many staff members is that they don't care about you or if you are enjoying your stay, they have one specific job to do and whether or not they do it well they will not help you with anything. I spoke to the assistant manager about a number of my poor experiences and he could offer absolutely no solutions and was very dismissive, as was the rest of the staff. Nobody cares that the quality is not up to par and contrary to previous experiences at Secrets where people go out of their way to help you, this was never the case here. Many times during the week there were no towels available, I was told by numerous employees to keep checking back at one of the huts every 15 minutes. This to me is ridiclous when you pay this amount of money for a high quality resort and you can't even get a towel to go to the pool or beach. They also only have one area for towels in the entire resort. The food was very lackluster, what I would expect at a 3 star resort. I would definitely NOT recommend this resort!!

Room not as reserved
JENIFER W.
Mar 15 2018
I had reserved, and paid extra, for an oceanview room. When we checked in, we got to the room and promptly noticed that you could not see ANY of the ocean from our balcony. I called the front desk and they said they would have a manager call me. We were hungry and tired and after about 30 minutes, we headed down to the front desk because no one had contacted us. We were told by the front desk staff that the room we had gotten was an oceanview room. My boyfriend took a video from the balcony to show them that there was NO view of the ocean. We were given the excuse that it was an oceanview and that the vegetation must have grown up since they opened and blocked the view, but she was adamant that it was an oceanview. She said she would show us another room as they had just had a cancellation (we were told on the phone the first time that there were no other rooms available). The new room was only a partial oceanview, but better than the first option, so we accepted it. There was no sorry, no compensation, no empathy for our situation. I paid nearly $200 for the upgrade and it cost me headaches, time and ruined our first day of vacation. They definitely need to do some reclassification of their hotel rooms. We were very disappointed and expected more from a Secrets resort.

Secrets Silversands 2018
TRAVIS M.

Our check in service was mediocre. This was our 2nd time back at Secrets Silversands after having some complaints from last year. We were not "welcomed back" since it was our second time and he was not friendly like other staff members we encountered. The Entertainment team was the only staff that made us feel at home. They were so wonderful all of the time!!! The only reason we would come back is to see them because otherwise our trip was not great. Our hotel room had bugs all over the counter near our TV. They looked like they went away and then all of a sudden they were crawling all over the place and we had that same issue last year except they were from the patio door - this time they came from somewhere in the corner of the wall. Our drains in our bathroom sinks were not working but they came and fixed them the same day. There was often things spilled in the elevators and in the halls that were not cleaned up timely. There was a crowd of spring breakers there that were obnoxious and we saw them laying on someone's dinner table out in the gazebo. The bathrooms near the World Caf were always plugged up and feces were all over the floor and toilet so we opted for other bathroom choices. The beach had lots of seaweed but we know that it takes time and it's hard to get it all cleaned up. I am not sure that we will return to this resort or other Secrets in the future due to our second visit not being fantastic. We thought that it being our second time around and them "making it up to us" would be a little better but we were not treated that way.

The elevator in building 5 was not in service. We were located on the 4th floor. Too many stairs for older people.
BENJAMIN B.
Mar 05 2018
I wish I would have known that the elevator was broken and we were going to be on the fourth floor. It was too much for us to go up and down all those stairs. I had to pay an additional $400 to upgrade to another room.

We were fortunate enough to find Silver Sands by booking a "Square Deal" a few years ago. We travel to MX almost every year, and ever since staying there, nothing has been comparable. They spoiled us so much that we just had to go back. Love EVERYTHING about this property.

Hard sell
DAVID S.
Feb 16 2018
We have stayed at two secrets properties and each ti.e we are hit with the uvc timeshare sell. We will more than likely choose a different brand in the future because of this. After traveling 5 plus hours , the last thing we want to hear or deal with is a sales pitch for another sales pitch off site.

Great service, beautiful grounds and beach, mattress wasn't very comfortable
PATRICK M.
Feb 02 2018
We loved the grounds, so beautiful, and the beach was beautifully kept as well. Service was excellent, very friendly and willing to help. Good food and drinks, loved that you didn't need to make reservations for the restaurants unless you wanted to do the hibachi. The room was beautiful, however the shower didn't get very hot and the bed was very hard (and I like firm mattresses). We had a top floor room that had a tarp on the roof, and on windy nights it sounded like a hurricane outside. So we didn't rest particularly well, but luckily we napped during the day at the pool. Overall I would definitely recommend, but would ask for a mattress topper and a room without the tarp on the roof.

Pool and Hot Tub and Response from Staff
ASHTON S.
Jan 29 2018
The pool and Hot Tub were unusable because they were extremely cold and nearly all guests complained and the staff acknowledged it but didn't call in the experts. They just fiddled with the controls with no real knowledge on repairing them. I complained in writing to AmStar Resorts and their reply was the outside temperatures were to cold. It was in the 70's every day. Totally unacceptable. This was my 2nd all inclusive. We've done many cruises. The previous all inclusive at the Marquis in Cabo was outstanding.

Lovely resort with setbacks

Will start with the good points we had a lovely view 4th floor privilege ocean view which was enormous well equipped nice to have a large shower and jacuzzi bath . The resort has a good selection of restaurants to choose from all apart from one was open dining no reservation long trousers and closed shoes for men in the evening. Around the pool and beach Delmy was a star always there when your glass was empty and such a happy face . The food and drinks where all to a good standard the drinks in the privilege bar where premium brands . On the negative side 1. There is clearly a tipping culture especially with the waiting staff we stayed at 4 Caribbean resorts last year of equal standard and tipping was forbidden as they considered good service was something that comes standard which it did. Here the waiting staff soon pick out the good tippers and serve accordingly 2. Turn down service was hit and miss and was far to early in the evening usually when you are trying to get ready 3. To much hard sell on Spa treatments, photo sessions, and timeshare Overall it’s a great place but some areas need addressing to bring it line with other Caribbean islands

This was our 8th visit to a Riviera Mayan SECRETS resort over the last 9 years and the second time to this particular resort but this most recent stay was a very disappointing experience for us. We chose Secrets because in the past, they made you feel special and offered many 'little' things that made your stay so special. First, there were problems with our room (no A/C) & no resolution made after repeated attempts with front desk staff. There was also no acknowledgement of the special occasion we were celebrating even though this was requested in writing at the time of booking & mentioned at check-in. The property itself is in good but not great condition- many burned out lights, well-worn stairwells, hallways, elevator etc. The gym has virtually no air conditioning as it's set very high. The food was good but again not great with limited menus in the restaurants, however the restaurant staff were excellent and very professional. The quality of evening entertainment was definitely not up to the standard we've experienced in the past at SECRETS resorts. Of the 5 nights, we only had real turn-down service twice. Pool floaters were very limited & hoarded by those main floor guests with direct access to the pools. We did not like the push for time share purchase at the onset or the constant solicitation to make purchases in the very pricey spa. And before posting this review, our concerns were sent to the resort so that they might have a chance to redeem themselves but after two weeks, it is still unanswered. In 2009, we stayed at this SECRETS Silversands resort and rated it 5* on TripAdvisor but after this last visit, we’d only give it a 3.5* and I doubt that we’ll ever return to this one.

Anniversary Trip

We stayed at here for our 40th anniversary in Feb. I know it took me a long time to finally getting around to this review. First Omar. he welcomed us like family. Actually, he kinda felt like family. friends of ours warned him we were coming. But still he's great! they gave us a complementary upgrade. the room was 3rd floor with an unobstructed ocean and main pool view. Had to sit through the requisite sales pitch right away. However, it wasn't too bad. The lady was very nice. The food was great! The wait staff was great. With the exception of the server we had the last evening in the steak house. he pretty much sucked. I won't say his name. The entertainment team - Santiago, Charlie, Dylan, Stephanie, Ana Banana, and Mayra. Thanks you for helping to make our stay extra special. You guys are really fantastic and as the name implies, entertaining. The coffee - drink lots of it. you won't find better in this hemisphere. Our daily routine - I woke up every morning at 0600. can't help it. So I went to the 24 hour coffee shop and got some coffee. Then I went out to the pool, pick our spot for the day and watched the sun rise. About that time my better half would be up and we would walk north on the beach. 45 minutes up and back. Breakfast at the buffet and hit the pool. right at 1000 bloody mary's and pool fun. Lunch can be had at a number of places but we mostly had what ever they were cooking by the pool. The chicken was very good. 1600, the e-team would have something going on. I recommend the tequila tasting and the sushi class. Oh and blackjack with Mayra. Drinks were top notch. I should know I drank enough of them and the wait staff around the pool keeps them coming. We were there for 5 nights. Next time it will be 7 or 10 days and it will be soon.

Recently returned from a trip to SSS. Start with the shout outs: Delmy, thank you for your great service. My glass was never empty while I spent my days at the beach. Charlie, you made Texas Hold Em a fun experience. The resort grounds are beautiful and impeccably maintained. Pools were clean. While the resort is beginning to show some signs of age, they do a great job of staying on top of maintenance. As most of the other reviews mention, the beach is filled with seaweed. The resort staff work hard to try to clear it, but really this stretch of beach just isn’t as pretty as many others. It didn’t stop me from hanging out in a lounge chair there for a week though. The food is typical for an AI. We were more impressed with the breakfast and lunch fare from the World Cafe than we were with the formal dining in the evening. Room service was quick and very good at all times of the day/night. Really didn’t like the hard sell to get us to visit other resorts and purchase the membership. We approached more than once. This isn’t the Vegas strip, I shouldn’t have to fight off pushy time shares salesmen. Resort hacks: -If you like to drink your mixed drinks with a straw, bring a Yeti with a stainless steel straw. They don’t have straws here. -There is a dress code for the evening restaurants. Guys, don’t forget your collar shirts and long pants. -The number of pool floats is very limited. Pick up a cheap one at the dollar store before you come if you want to be guaranteed one everyday. -If you need to keep your lights on but don’t have a key handy, fold a coaster in half and put it in the slot. -Room service will bring you an extra Milky Way or M&M’s if you ask. Overall, we had a great trip. Would recommend to others unless you are dreaming of a pristine beach. If so, probably need to hit the hotel zone. It was a relaxed atmosphere with great service.

Honeymoon April 2018
Andrea H,
Mon Apr 23 21:37:12 EDT 2018
My husband and I honeymooned at Secrets for 7 nights and 8 days. We’re happy with our choice and loved that it was adults only. It was romantic and intimate. The resort is big but not too big! We stayed in a jacuzzi rooftop room and loved the location and decor. Those rooms are in the main building really close to most the restaurants. They actually tried upgrading us to a oceanfront honeymoon suite which they let us look at first and decide (which was awesome of them) but we stuck with our original choice. At night it was loud since the balcony was right above the outside bar where they’d have live bands but we didn’t mind at all. The food and shows surpassed our expectations. I usually assume food at all inclusive resorts isn’t going to be the best but I was wrong about that here! For the most part everything was great and we would love to return with friends or family. As far as cons; first, the beach. It was rocky and not very swimmable. My husband loves to swim in the ocean so wasn’t too thrilled about the rocky waters. There was a ton of seaweed while we were there too but that didn’t bother us as much as the rockiness. Also like others mentioned there were small wear and tear things around the resort that I felt like could be easy fixes as far as paint/fixtures and such. Cleaning service always came pretty early while we were still in the room, we’d ask if they could come back later and they would say yes but wouldn’t return. We did preferred club and they definitely took care of us at the concierge and remembered us by name for the week but I think I’m the future we wouldn’t go with preferred. Not worth the extra money. We didn’t get the ‘honeymoon’ banner or turndown service like they advertise on the website which again are little things but why advertise if you don’t do it for all. Overall we would return! Dylan, Santiago, and Anna were all GREAT with the entertainment staff! We will never forget this trip!
