Musty AC transferred smell to clothes and luggage
JESSE G.
Apr 18 2018
This was my third time to Barcelo Maya. I must have just gotten a bad room. The AC had a moldy and musty smell. As you spent time in the room, you'd get used to it, but when we got home, I was able to smell how bad it actually was when I opened my luggage. The room was far too humid. The mattresses also must have had some type of plastic liner under the sheets as you'd wake up sweating if under the covers. If you pulled them back, you'd freeze now matter the AC setting. Just a bit strange. Don't take this as me being sour. I thoroughly enjoyed this stay, but I don't think if I go again, that I would accept such a smell again.

I will never ever have another person travel with my family again. I'm sure they have an ear full for anyone that will here. It's was a mediocre trip. Buffet, snack bar food was less then mediocre as well. The best meals we have were at the A la carte places and we could only get into 3 of them because it was so booked up during this week. Of Course we traveled at the most busy time of the year, but lack of shade on the beach is an issue along with people securing their pool side shade the night before by holding towels out for the entire day is a bit ridiculous too. That was very frustrating. The low end alcohol made many of us sick through out the week. One of our girls did find a blue pill in the bottom of her drink that she received directly from the bar tender. The mother went nuts on the guy. The kids received rashes and sores all over their bodies from the nasty condom broken cup filled pool near the tropical all week....It was shockingly surprising how the resort DJ's encouraged this behavior and mayhem all week long. Its was a close to Sodom and Gomorrah as I could describe. Marijuana and drugs were sold out in the open and as freely as people wanted. The bar tenders making out with girls all over the bar area and having an open party in front of parents and families. I and my friends chose to stay near the Colonial pool where we felt it was keep separate from the busyness of the mayhem...but will never return to this resort again The workers are kind and work hard. Hardest workers I've seen, but Spring Break is not a time of year I ever want to travel during ever again.

My Experience
DORIS F.
Mar 07 2018
My room was very nice but they didn't have any wash cloths. I asked for wash cloths but they said they didn't have any. Another person asked for wash cloths and were handed 2 of them. After that they were told they didn't have any. I think they should have wash cloths... At the pool, they kept running out of light beer. This seems odd when they have several tappers. These things didn't spoil my vacation but is an area where the hotel could use improvement. The entertainment SUCKED. It was so boring that we all decided they planned it that way so people would go to their room! Which we did. It was a great vacation and we were very pleased with Apple Vacations - next time...new destination.

Needs Improvement

This was our 4th trip to the Barcelo and we were disappointed in the attitude of the bar staff. Unless they was you with a wad of cash in your hand, they would basically ignor you or take a long time to wait on you even thought they were not busy. Also, they no longer serve premium liquors; only the cheap stuff unless you pay extra. The food buffets were O.K., but pretty much the same thing every day whereas they used to have a different variety every day. Last, BUT not least was our check-in upon our arrival. There were only two clerks at the desk (about 5 PM) and about 30 people waiting to check in; we stood in line for 1 hr. 20 min. This was just unacceptable, therefore we will be choosing another hotel on the beautiful Riviera Maya for future trips.

3rd Time's a Charm

Apple Vacation provides great service from booking to return. Hotel property is mid-sized, easy to navigate, and has all the amenities one would expect. It is not the highest of luxury, but it is absolutely wonderful. The pool area is gorgeous, but the pool water is not heated; winter pool water is very cold. Ocean/beach is also beautiful, and there are plenty of chairs. The beach is a bit rocky and difficult to enter in many spots, but the water is calm and lovely once you're in. Water shoes are recommended for easier entry/exit. Evening entertaining is sub-par; almost laughable most nights. Just go because it's fun... not because it's trying to be a Broadway knock-off.

Ok its nice you can use 4 resort areas, so for sure its big but there was not so much to see... most customers was families with kids. Bars was empty same with pools. Pools water was freezing! Ocean was much warmer than pools. Food was pretty good in buffee but always same, they change nothing. A la carte... japanese one suck. I wanted to cry when they overcooked tuna, lobster, swordfish and didnt make duck skin crispy. Italian restaurant was good. Staff is not so nice, they dont really talk with you but laugh behind your back making fun of you. Bed in room is rock hard.

My only issues with the hotel is that there are no bathroom fans for when you shower which leaves a lot of moisture in your rooms. Other than that everything was great. The hotel was booked at 30% capacity when we were there which felt like we had the resort to ourselves. Everyone was very friendly. We did get lost one night trying to find a restaurant and no one we stopped to ask spoke any English, so it was hard to get the proper directions and we ended up walking in circles and missed our reservation that night... but another restaurant squeezed us in with no issues. The beaches was great, the water the perfect temp. The pools were huge. Swim up bars were always welcoming. The buffets off of/close to the beach were perfect when you needed a snack. Having everything on site means, casino, shopping, bowling, clubs, various restaurants, Dolphin experience, etc... you really DON'T have to leave the resort for anything. Although a few of us did venture into town for shopping to get better deals on souvenirs on our last day. There were 14 in our group for this trip and every single one of us said we'd go back to this resort again. A few of us are already pricing and trying to plan our next escape there. Very pleased with our experience and would recommend this group of resorts to everyone.

Beautiful grounds but food is marginal

We stayed in the Tropical for 8 days. We were in the ocean view suite. The rooms are very nice and clean. No complaints about the room. The grounds are beautiful. Very well maintained and the lighting at night is gorgeous. The resort is huge and fun to walk around. The resort bus was fun for the kids. The top was open so they enjoyed the ride. Swimming with the dolphins was well worth it! One of the best parts of our trip. If you have a child that wants her hair braided the only place to do it is at or through the spa and it’s $52 for 1/2 head. Very spendy. It took about 15-20 min. The entertainment at night in the theatre was also disappointing. Didn’t seem very put together and wasn’t all that entertaining. Would have also liked to see more entertainment for the kids. Additionally would have liked to see a lot more entertainment at the pools. The only entertainment poolside was arobics and water polo. The bartenders at the tropical pool bar were really rude and it was tough to get a drink. The drinks would also come 3/4 full. There weren’t many servers walking around either. Lastly the food was not very good, especially in the buffet. The quality was poor. The best meal we had was at the Santa Fe Steak House.

Great stay - impressive resort

We stayed at this hotel for 11 nights in April. It is a huge resort with immaculate gardens and the staff are constantly tidying and working to maintain its appearance even down to the task of clearing up the seaweed that appears on the beach. The check-in is slow-not enough staff on the counter. Make sure you visit Guest Services immediately after checking in to make restaurant reservations if you want any during your stay. We enjoyed Kyoto and Santa Fe with the others just average. Buffets have a wide variety with something for everyone and the staff are friendly and helpful throughout. Pools were busy the first part of our break with the tail-end of the US spring break so we did have a louder bunch of kids initially but they were kept in one pool and were easily avoided. Beaches were cleaned of seaweed daily and the snorkelling was excellent. Bring water shoes as there were rocks in places. Saw turtles and a wide variety of fish. Evening entertainment was hit and miss as with most resorts but there was a wide variety and some evenings were excellent, Mexican evening and circus. The dancers are great. We stayed in a basic room which was suitable for us as we don't spend much time in the room. Room was cleaned daily and was re-stocked regularly. The hotel complex included a mall, bowling, crazy golf, tennis and lots of other things to do some of which incur an extra charge. I also visited the spa for a massage and was impressed with the facilities and service. A lovely relaxing afternoon. Overall a lovely hotel with something for everyone in the family. Recommended.

I had an issue which I addressed with the hotel and received no response from the management after being told twice that I would hear back from them. I have gone into detail on my survey with them so no need to rehash here. It would not prevent my family from visiting this resort again.

Magnificent resort!

The beauty of this magnificent complex is only surpassed by the warmth of its staff! They work tirelessly to make your vacation special and they do it with a smile! The food is very good, of the A-la-carte restaurants, the Tokyo and Capri were our favorites, the buffet is varied and no one will starve here even if you might not like everything on the menu! We went as a couple but I have to say that this is by far the best family resort we’ve ever been too, children of all ages will want for nothing here and the ‘dolphinarium’ will melt your heart,..wether you attend the free show or pay for the experience, it’s right there, no need to go anywhere! The beach is made for snorkelers as it is very rocky and you need water shoes, the 2 kms of shoreline is unfortunately overrun by seaweed like we’ve never seen,..the staff tries to pile it up but its a daunting task, so dont come here expecting flawless white sand and clear water..palm trees on the beach are your only shade, but there are many,..no huts..the pools are beautiful, this resort is great for walking under the stars after supper with a warm tropical breeze always blowing..the grounds are well kept and lush and a boardwalk traverses all 5 resorts...I would recommend The Tropical or Colonial , they are more centralized. The fitness center and the Spa are very impressive, just a lovely place..

Was worth it butttt........

We originally switched from the Hyatt Ziba to come here so we could add an extra day and get our monies worth. That being said.... the grounds were BEAUTIFUL!!! Downfall, the resort was HUGE!! If your don’t mind walking and walking and more walking then this is not your resort! Dining is all over! And for dining.... ugh MEN HAVE TO WEAR PANTS!! No where while booking did it say that or at least I missed it. Furthermore, why would you force men to wear long pants when 1. We come to get out of the cold and travel with mostly comfort beach clothes and casual dining shorts. 2. It’s 86 degree in the Caribbean, who thinks of long pants while packing? My husband has a very nice wardrobe of vineyard fine dress shorts and polos and that’s far better to look at then ripped jeans and cargo pants. So, Men bring pants for dinner. Some of the areas on the beach you can’t access water so stay closer to Caribe and Beach if you don’t want an additional walk upon the already long walk to the beach. The buffet has great choices and ambiance is nice. Staff is very friendly we loved them all! Check in is slow and rooms weren’t ready till 4:44 but eh, who wants a hot shower after traveling all day anyways.... overall I would come back since the price is right, but we most likely will stick to the Hyatt Ziva which has proved to really have the best of the best in every aspect for us!
