Barcelo Puerto Vallarta

We really enjoyed our stay! Great food, staff and location. Barcelo is just the right size. The only complaint i have is when we got to our room, there were no towels, no beach towels, no slippers or robe and this was something that was supposed to be a perk of staying in the premium level. We did not really know what we were missing until we started asking around. We told the local Apple Representative about this the following morning after check in but i don't know if he really did anything about it. the other thing I wanted to mention is the free tour of Puerto Vallarta that comes with the room is really just a shopping spree. They do stop at certain tourist spots but mainly stop at different shops along the way so people can shop. Not our cup of tea. However, when we voiced our displeasure to the tour guide they happily dropped us back at the resort, so we didn't have to find our own mode of transportation back. All in all, we know a lot more now then we did before, would go back and would stay at Barcelo again. It was a beautiful place.

Friendly staff, but cleanliness was an afterthought.

The rooms were generally clean, and the staff were pretty friendly. Though I could tell that the silverware needed to be cleaned thoroughly, but rarely was. On multiple occasions I noticed black flakes / oil / heavy smudges on our forks/knives/cups. Additionally, my wife got food poisoning for half the trip, which I would not be surprised if it was from the dirty silverware.

The hotel was absolutely beautiful and lived up to everything that we expected. The staff were incredibly friendly and honestly went out of their way to make us feel welcome and comfortable. The hotel was very private to its surroundings which was great, but also close enough to downtown to hop in a cab whenever we wanted to do something different. I would recommend this hotel for anyone; from couples to families with children!

This is a very nice hotel. The food is just ok, kind of the same thing everyday. If you are looking for nightlife this isn't the place. The bar is nice but it is small and It usually closes about 12 or 1am. It is clean and it is well maintained. We had a small leak in the bathroom, we told the front desk and they had maintenance there within 5 minutes. He fixed the leak and all was good. This hotel is far from downtown but you can take a bus into town that stops right in front of the hotel for 8 pesos. We would take the bus into town and a cab back. The cab from the Melacon was 150 pesos. The pools are nice. 2 seem to always be in the shade so they are cold but the main pool is nice and it does have a swim up bar. The staff are always friendly and helpful Tip them well they work really hard at making you happy! The beach is rough. It is very small and the sand is like little rocks, so don't walk barefoot. there is a couple little huts on the beach that do massage for $20 per person!! Unheard of, We went to the hut all the way to the right the last little hut and they gave the deepest deep tissue massage I've ever had!! Very good massage! The specialty restaurants are mediocre. But all in all it is a beautiful hotel and very clean. The people are amazing. We have been there twice now and each time was wonderful!

not like it was on previous stays

We have stayed @ Barceló on several occasions, my stay this time was not quite up to par with previous stays. The changes were subtle, probably not noticeable if we had not stayed there in past. Our 2 bdrm family suite was in need of some tlc, sink did not drain in one bathroom, neither hair dryer worked and several lights not working. If you like washcloths best bring your own. We had to call housekeeping 4 times too have room cleaned. The game room has been remodeled, they took out the pool table & replaced it with token operated games (the tokens price is ridiculous (10 tokens for 16.00 usd) games were timed for 30 seconds per game. in my opinion extremely overpriced.

It was only my husband and I and we were giving a room with 2 double beds. When going on a vacation we would gave much rather preferred a king sized bed. They ended up trying to accommodate and put the two beds together but you could still feel the crack.

Mosquitoes ruined it!

The $500 resort credit provided by Apple Vacation is a hoax, there is no such thing. Barcelo totally denied it. The hotel premium concierge service were not happy to make any changes to the dinner reservations already. The guy at the service desk kept winking at my daughter and my wife. Lots of mosquitoes, we have bites all over our legs & arms which itch like hell and now we have to taking antibiotics. Restaurants are average, nothing special. The main chef at the buffet was actually able to prepare a much better three course dinner for us exclusively. Both the showers in the bathrooms had water drainage issue, we complained twice and we were told it was fixed but it actually got worse. Not returning to this resort.

Nice friendly staff,, room was not terrible but not good. Showers were poor and didn't drain well. Food was well below average. Usually gain a couple pounds on vacation, not on this one. Drinks were the same. Oh yea,,and we did upgrade to the premium at booking. So I can only imagine how bad it could have been. For those that read the recommendations, like we did, this is a honest opinion for a family of five (kids13,11,7). I would not recommend Barcelo Puerto Vallarta.

Scary

The last night of my stay I came back to my room and my door was open and there was a receipt from the front office laying inside my room on the ledge inside the door. When I walk down to the office to ask them why that was put in my room and my door left open they told me they'd never would do that. The bellboy showed me where he would've put it in the door either in the crack of the door or under the door . He said he would play back the security cameras and see what was going on he called me when I he asked me if I was going back to my room and I said yes and I was scared. I looked under the bed I looked under the vanity I looked in the closet's was I thought someone could've been hiding in my room. Nothing appeared to be missing but it still made me wonder why my door was left open. They called me at my room and said that they've discovered that the apparatus that the room key slid into needed new batteries and that's why my door opened but they swore up-and-down that they never would open my door to put that receipt from my charges inside my room. I do not believe that this was true . Since I am a widow and I was in my room alone it was quite scary. Also my room was not ready when I got there they told me that it would be ready in a half an hour and I waited until almost 4 o'clock in the afternoon before it was open so I could go in and put my suitcase in my room and kind of get settled and the floor was dirty.

Beautiful Resort-Can't wait to return!
Louise E,
Fri Apr 20 15:44:34 EDT 2018
Hello from BC, Canada! This review is for our trip from April 1st to the 8th of 2018. We are a 49 year old husband & wife who have traveled to Mexico many times, mostly within Puerto Vallarta, once to Cancun, once to Cabo San Lucas and to Cuba. Most often, we are joined by our children who are all now in their 20's. I tell you this so as you read this review you understand a bit about our demographic...you aren't left wondering if we are in our 80's or are first time travelers in our 20's! This was our first visit to the Barcelo resort in PV and we LOVED IT!! It was every bit as beautiful as the pictures and reviews said it would be. We chose Barcelo because of the location, in Mismaloya Bay. Our adult kids did not join this trip so it wasn't important to us to be close to the clubs down the Malecon. Having said that, if they would have joined it is only a 20 minute cab ride from the resort. We went into the Malecon on one of our days and chose to use Uber and the price (although fluctuating) was very reasonable. $98 pesos there and $108 pesos to get back. It took about 40 minutes to get from the airport to the resort. A scenic drive along the ocean (for the last bit) and is such a beautiful property to arrive at once you are there. It is just like they say, nestled in the jungle! They take very good care of the entire property, inside and out. Very pretty and well maintained. Rooms: Spacious & tastefully decorated...warm & inviting, King size bed with really comfy mattress and pillows, Bathroom is large & beautifully tiled; walk-in shower with shampoo/conditioner dispenser on wall; large fluffy towels; shower head is a rain shower type, from the ceiling. A good blow dryer, Mini fridge stocked daily with soft drinks, beer & bottled water, large balcony with table & chairs; outlet; hanging rack for wet clothes, screen doors on the patio doors. All rooms in both towers face ocean/pool areas. We had a room on the sixth floor in tower 1. Although we can't give an opinion on the pros & cons of tower 1 vs. tower 2, we were really happy to be in tower 1. We had morning sun on the balcony and shade in the afternoon whereas tower 2 seems to be the opposite...we are thinking that the afternoon sun on those balconies would be pretty warm. We never put the air conditioner on once...may be the time of year. If you sleep with the patio door open you can hear the music & laughter late into the evening...if you don't want to hear it, shut your doors! If you ever want to (because you are that energetic vacationer wanting to wear off the pina coladas, cervezas or desserts) the stairwells in this resort are beautiful, open-air and are as much a part of the building as the rooms or lobby. Other resorts we've been to have not been like this. Worth noting: there is a ice/water bottle refill machine on every floor, near the stairs. Nice touch! Food: Loved the buffet area, from the view to the options; the food was delicious and varied; salad bar every night, fresh fruit every morning. Really enjoyed the fresh pasta station (LOVED Jose who made us our delicious pasta dishes - with such a big, beautiful smile!); depending on the time you eat, the lineup to get a fresh omelet made in the am could be long but lots of options if you don't want to wait. Freshly squeezed orange juice every day...so pulpy - yum! Soft-serve, self-serve 'ice cream' dispensers (iced milk) Fresh salsa & guacamole with fresh chips at Los Arcos Grill/Snack, restaurant; also a wood fire oven for thin crust pizza...delicious food. Both Al la Carte restaurants and Indoor buffet areas can accommodate large groups no problem. 4 Al la Carte restaurants...beautifully decorated - you need to make reservations but can be done any time during the day. We ate at the Italian and the Spanish...both were good but really enjoyed the Spanish; we enjoyed the buffet so chose to mostly eat there. Everyone that works in these areas from, the ladies that hostess to the men & women that serve, are genuinely friendly and nice - especially Oscar (Martinez) in the buffet. He remembered our names early on and it made us feel very welcome...nice job! Coffee: If you are an early morning riser/coffee drinker they have great coffee just inside the doors of the buffet at 7 am. Bring your mug from the room if you prefer coffee in a mug vs the paper cup to enjoy around the pool. If I had a wish it would've been that there was an assortment of sweets available at the coffee table to have with your morning coffee (muffin/cookie). (I did grab some later in my week from the buffet area but I wasn't sure if that was okay as there were other signs posted about not taking food out of the restaurants; there is no eating allowed around the pool area) Pools: Two large pool areas ....both very beautiful Pool 1 - heated, has swim-up bar, music, activities, near tower 1. Pool 2 - not heated but nice temp., quieter, has hot tub, swim-through waterfall, hammocks, close to snack restaurant, near tower 2 *there is a beautiful bathroom nestled in the foliage between the two main pools...we didn't see it till a few days into our stay. Separate pool for volleyball and water polo. Separate kiddy pool with slide. Lifeguards wandering the pool & beach area daily. Beautiful bathrooms in lower areas of the towers as well. Entertainment staff around pool is as good as the people that choose to join in in the fun. Reserving chairs doesn't seem to be an issue here; we found that most of the 'good' chairs were gone by 8 am so if you want a certain spot you need to get up early and put your towel down. Within the resort there are some very nice gift, jewelry and convenience stores...so if you want to buy vanilla, knick-knacks and such it is an option. There is a nice gym to work out in if that is your thing. There is also a nice Kids Club program here. Just want to say how much we enjoyed Felix in the Cantina Bar - thank you for your friendliness & great service! We had read that the beach area is not very big but that isn't our feeling. We frequently wandered the beach, enjoying the Mismaloya Bay. There are restaurants right on the beach where you can sip a Corona and enjoy meal, have a massage listening to the ocean waves crash, rent a jet ski or a SUP or hire a boat to take you out for a ride or a fishing trip....it really is just a beautiful place to be. PACK BUG SPRAY. We got bit on this trip more than we ever have, but it does seem to be mainly when you leave the resort and spend time on the beach. Not mosquitoes...maybe no-see-ums? We never noticed them around the resort. We definitely plan to go back, bringing with us family and friends. It was a truly beautiful place to holiday!

Very relaxing experience

This was a great family vacation. We were there for one week and loved are time there. We will definitely go back again and recommend it. Just not the Capri restaurant. That was not a good experience. Service was poor and food was aweful. The rest of the resort was excellent.

Our family of 4 stayed at the Barcelo for 1 week. We had a great time and enjoyed all the amenities very much. The premium lounge was a good place to get specialty drinks (like fine wine and Crown Royal). The hosts were very helpful. This resort is very clean and well maintained. The beach is small and busy but a nice morning walk on the iguana trail is a great way to start the day and chat with the fishermen getting their boats ready for tours. We felt very safe and well taken care of. The “paint your own pottery” stand was so much fun , my daughter and I could have done it every day; no worries, the amigo that runs it makes your work look professional. We got mani-pedi’s at the spa, they were basic but again very nicely executed. The free photo shoot was a good opportunities for us to have family portraits done, there was a language barrier but we figured it out and had lots of laughs. The 2 bedroom suite was very spacious and the view was fantastic, we watched the sun set every night from our balcony. Mismaloya is a small, quiet area south of the city, not much night life but we were ok with that. Overall, we had a great time and may even return one day, the only reason we may not is México is a big country with lots of beautiful places to visit and we like to experience something new each trip.

I have been staying at Barcelo which was formerly La Jolla De Mismaloya (The Jewel of Mismaloya) for 18 years now. I went the first time based on a travel agents recommendation and stayed for a week. That was 18 years ago. I loved the resort so much it has become an annual trip. I quickly found out that 1 week was not nearly enough and increased the length of my stay every year till now I spend the entire month of August and part of September there (5 weeks) I have introduced Barcelo to over 40 other people in the ensuing years and I can honestly say that nobody has been disappointed. The level of service is impeccable. The staff goes out of their way to ensure that you are being treated as an important guest. You get the presidential treatment without paying presidential suite rates. The dining options have something for everybody from meat and potatoes folks to vegetarians. The rooms are fastidiously cleaned and stocked with waters, sodas, beers and snacks every day. I have met some amazing friends along the way both at the resort as well as the vendors on the beach. The people of Mismaloya and Puerto Vallarta are very friendly and most speak English much better than my Spanish. There is a host of things to do, whether you want to swing the day away in a hammock, have cocktails at the swim-up bar or catch some rays on the beach or poolside. Additionally, the location of Barcelo makes excursions convenient. You can hire a boat from the beach to take you fishing, sightseeing, snorkeling or even to town. You can catch a cab right outside to town which will cost about $12 total U.S. for up to 4 people or you can venture across the river to Mismaloya where you will find numerous palapas and umbrellas at the several different restaurants. Everybody over there is friendly and truly appreciate the tourist dollars. It is one of my favorite afternoon destinations and I have many friends there that I look forward to seeing each year. I don't ever post on forums like these, but I wanted to express my true experiences at Barcelo. True you are not going to please everyone no matter what you do, but people who post negatively are probably people who you couldn't satisfy no matter what you do.

Underwhelming

My family and I (2 adults, a 5 yr old & a 7 yr old) booked a trip to this resort based off other reviews (which baffle me to this day) and the fact that we absolutely LOVE Puerto Vallarta and our choice hotel was booked. We upgraded to premium service, and what a waste of money. It was merely a room with a few finger foods and a serve yourself bar. The added perk of private check-in with this service was a joke and we finally went to check-in at the front desk. Strike 1. Upon arrival to our room, we found the room to be spacious (2 bedroom 2 bath), but terrible dirty, worn down, mold in areas, fingerprints smudged on the furniture & fridge, etc. I called to ask for a more detailed cleaning, but no one ever came. (In fact, with all of our calls to the front desk, no one EVER came, despite the direction from the operator that someone would be to our room) I finally had to get a wash cloth (good luck getting extras) and clean the most touched areas with soap & water myself. Removing visible fingerprints left behind from previous guests. The resort itself was dated and not clean. We chose this resort based off the fact that there was a kids club, but if your child does not speak Spanish, they won’t be making any friends here. We elected to skip this feature. One day, we were w/out power for hours, and this was not due to any storm. We stayed by the pool, so we could have light, but using the restroom in the dark was a problem. We were told mixed things about why the power was actually out, but ultimately, it all pointed back to resort, not the power service. The beach is horrible. It is tiny, I mean TINY, hardly any chairs, and overrun by people try to sell things. For that reason, the pool is packed. The food was ok, but the service was spotty. Not sure if they are understaffed or what, but it was not uncommon to be sitting next to a tray that was piled with leftover food. It was gross. Not to mention, next to one of the buffet lines, a person dropped their glass and it shattered. Their solution was to place chairs on top of it, rather than immediately clean it. It sat like that through our entire meal. Chair cushions at buffet were also gross with food on them and appeared to not be cleaned or changed during our stay. We had dinner at the restaurant by the pool one evening and I felt like we were the main course... we were all melting, MELTING, in the direct sun, as was the couple next to us. They finally moved the tables of those in direct sun, which would have helped, had we not already been drenched in sweat. I will say, most of the staff was kind, though they appeared to be running a thousand different directions in dingy white, torn uniforms, looking very unprofessional. It was not uncommon to see men with guns walking around, security, which was unnerving. I do not recall ever seeing this so obvious at any of our other stays in PV. This being said, my husband got sick on our second day and was laid up in bed. I honestly was ready to book a flight home, I even called our “regular” resort, hoping something had changed and we could get a transfer. I did not feel safe, would not let my kids out of arms reach on our trips to and from dinner (w/out my husband) and actually placed our suitcases in front of the door, hoping that the sound of someone trying to get in would be louder w/the door blocked w/luggage. I just did not feel safe at this resort. Also, my husband’s watch was stolen from our room during our stay. He failed to lock it in the safe one day. There were very few English speaking people at this resort, it seemed that most of the guests had drove, not flown, but we did meet one couple and they had the exact complaints and concerns that we had. Both our family and theirs were counting down the days to return home. I have never been more excited to leave a “vacation” in my life!! I could not, in good conscious, recommend this faculty to anyone. I am beyond baffled to read some of these reviews, raving about service and facilities. We travel regularly, so maybe my standards are somewhat high, but even based off our worst experiences, this one takes the cake. **The one positive thing about this facility was the life guard, I wish I could remember his name, as he was the friendliest, most kind staff member, always pointing out the iguanas to our children.
